On paper, the action and horror genres seem like they'd be strange bedfellows. After all, the general aim of action films is to provide adrenaline-fueled thrills, while horror movies are intended to disturb, scare, and unnerve.
Yet in practice, the genres blend far better and far more often than may be expected. I can still remember schoolyard chums excitedly recounting the ways in which Bruce Willis' John McClane dispatched terrorists in "Die Hard 2" (such as when he shoves an icicle into a baddie's eye), kills that would be wholly appropriate in a "Friday the 13th" or "A Nightmare on Elm Street" film. Hollywood producers certainly saw the connections; Renny Harlin, who directed "Die Hard 2," won the gig after making horror films like "Prison" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master."
In 2023, the action and horror genres have long been considered an excellent peanut-butter-and-chocolate combo, with much cross-pollination happening within them.

Lenny Pozner’s darkest day was Dec. 14, 2012, when his 6-year-old son, Noah, was one of 20 children slaughtered in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Pozner became a target himself.
Within days, and despite all of the evidence to the contrary, conspiracy theories began to swirl about the attack — speculating that the shooting was a hoax or some kind of cover for something even more sinister.
“Some of the people who’ve been given a voice with the web are hateful people. … But globally, they’re a large group,” Pozner tells People,...

Former television news anchor Heather Unruh claims actor Kevin Spacey sexually assaulted her teenage son, CBS Boston reports.
During a news conference on Wednesday morning, with attorney Mitchell Garabedian, Unruh alleged the assault happened in July 2016 on Nantucket when her son was drunk at the Club Car restaurant.
Fighting back tears, she said her son was a "starstruck, straight, 18-year-old young man who had no idea that the famous actor was an alleged sexual predator, or that he was about to become his next victim."

Just about everyone is happy that Denis Villeneuve directed “Blade Runner 2049,” including Rian Johnson. The two filmmakers spoke to each other after a recent screening of the film, which was recorded as an episode of the DGA’s podcast the Director’s Cut. A few minutes in, Villeneuve describes the cloak-and-dagger circumstances that led to him taking on the project — and why it took him two months to decide to do so.

“Blade Runner 2049” won’t be crossing the $50 million mark at the box office in its first week of release, which only means that a lot more people need to go see it on the big screen. Denis Villeneuve’s sequel features the kind of mind-blowing cinematography from Roger Deakins that requires the biggest screen imaginable in order to process the scope of each image, so anyone waiting to watch “2049” on Blu-ray or skipping it altogether isn’t making the right decision. For those of you wisely buying a ticket, Deakins has some advice for you: Don’t see “2049” in 3D.
“My preferred version is the standard 2D widescreen version,” Deakins wrote on his website. The cinematographer shot “Blade Runner 2049” in 2D and the 3D conversation came afterwards, which effects the clarity of the image. Although Deakins oversaw the conversion, he doesn’t think watching the film in 3D...

Natalie Morales is speaking out against a photographer who manufactured a “wardrobe malfunction” by taking upskirt photos of her on the red carpet of “Battle of the Sexes.” Morales stars in the film as tennis player Rosie Casals and attended the September 16 premiere in Los Angeles where the incident occurred. The actress took to Twitter to explain what really happened, and although she doesn’t say the photographer by name, she does powerfully explain her side of the story.
“So someone sent me photos of me having what they called a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ at last weekend’s premiere of Battle of the Sexes, which was one of the happiest moments of my life thus far,” Morales tweeted.
“These are pictures they Purposely took up my skirt To Get A Shot of my vag.”

‘Battle of the Sexes’: Why Emma Stone’s Performance as Billie Jean King Deserves a Much Better Movie
For her first post-Oscar role, newly minted Academy Award winner Emma Stone doesn’t disappoint, bringing sensitivity and nuance to her part as Billie Jean King in Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ fact-based “Battle of the Sexes.” It’s just too bad that the film — a broad drama that gets a major status boost from the full force of Stone’s performance — isn’t a better fit for the work she’s turning in.
“Battles of the Sexes” essentially stuffs a long-necessary King biopic, one that follows the most personally formative experiences of the tennis champ’s life, into a crowd-pleasing story about the infamous sporting event from which it takes its title. It’s a character-driven drama crammed inside a sports film, and while that sort of engineering has often led to some revelatory offerings (think “Ali” or “The Fighter,” “Rudy” or “The Babe,” and scores more), “Battle” does not join their ranks.

But what she’s always wanted to do is direct. For Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson, moving behind the camera wasn’t the sort of career change she envisioned only after years in the business — it was something she grew up doing. Her own opportunities just had to catch up to her first.
“I’ve just made movies my whole life,” Larson recently told IndieWire. “Every summer, I would write and direct a film that I would direct my cousins in. It mostly took place in the garage, and I would just hang up different sheets and use our storage containers as different heights for things. I had a disco ball that I put outside the garage door, and when I turned it on, it meant we were rolling.”
She added, “I guess this has been part of my way of expressing myself for a very long time.”

Insecure on Sunday ushered Issa and Molly into the Season 2 finale the same way it sent them into the premiere: at a crossroads. Off Issa’s epic argument with her ex Lawrence last week, she — and, for that matter, he — once again was left evaluating the state of their breakup. And, in the wake of the dinner party from hell, Molly not only was rethinking her relationship priorities — adios, Dro; hello, Quentin? — she was contemplating the career dilemma that landed in her lap, too. Did the besties resolve their issues with, as the episode’s title suggested they would, “Hella...

There’s no buzzier title at the Toronto International Film Festival than Craig Gillespie’s alternately hilarious and deeply empathetic Tonya Harding biopic “I, Tonya.” Margot Robbie stars in the eponymous role as the embattled (and, as the film vividly shows, misunderstood) ice skating star who became the subject of so much derision, and the film attempts to present a full portrait of her before and after the insane events leading to the 1994 Winter Olympics (cue Nancy Kerrigan screaming “Why? Why?!”).
Much of that portrait is owed squarely to Harding herself who, along with ex-husband Jeff Gillooly (played in the film by Sebastian Stan, a meaty role for the rising star), participated in hours of interviews with screenwriter Steven Rogers. What emerges is a funny and flinty look at the embattled ice princess that doesn’t skimp on the gory details, including Harding’s abuse at the hands of both...

George Clooney has a message for anyone criticizing the Oscars for a lack of diversity: You’re looking in the wrong place. “It’s less about the Academy and more about the industry,” said the 56-year-old actor-director during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival. “I think we need to get more interesting young minority filmmakers getting their films out. “Reality is fractured” — think about those words for a second. Reality is supposed to be the one thing that’s absolute. It’s a state of existence we all must face, whether we’re waking up to a cold reality or embracing the reality of now. For it to be fractured, to be broken, is an impossibility. Reality simply is, and what is cannot be undone.
Unless, of course, you’ve been watching the third season of “Fargo.”
Throughout its television saga, Noah Hawley’s period drama about unexpected violence in small town America has been framed as a “true story.” It’s not, of course — that’s merely an appropriation from the Coen brothers’ film. Specifically, like the 1996 movie each episode begins with the statement: “This is a true story,” even though, like the film, it’s not.

But Season 3 has doubled down on its tricky typeface: Hawley, through characters like former police chief Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon) and a mysterious crime lord named V.M. Varga (David Thewlis), has broken down the meaning of truth in modern America.
“At a basic level, I have to be aware that I’m saying it’s a true story and that reality rarely ties itself up neatly; that reality is subject to randomness and coincidence and all of those things,” Hawley said in an interview with IndieWire. “I felt like our first season, the story basically played itself out until the very last scene. […] The second year, the ninth hour was really the big hour, […] and yet, in the end, it was a tragedy with a happy ending — just like the movie and just like the first season.”
“You’ll see how it turns out this year, but I’ll say I don’t want to take anything for granted like ‘Oh, it’s okay, it always wraps up neatly,'” he said. “There is a sense to which this year’s ‘Fargo’ is really a mirror reflecting our reality back to us at this moment in time, but we don’t know how it’s gonna end or how it’s gonna play out.”
Speaking the day after James Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Hawley was quick to point to relevant parallels between “Fargo” and our current cultural status.

“At the end of the day, everyone said, ‘Well James Comey testified and said a lot of damning things for the President of the United States.’ Then this morning the President of the United States tweets that he’s totally vindicated by the testimony yesterday and you go, ‘These two things are completely opposite — only one of them can be true.'”
And yet they’re both true. Objectivity has been tossed aside and much of the news, much of the world, is interpreted solely through the eye of the beholder. In 2017, alternate facts form alternate realities, and the same can be said of “Fargo’s” 2011 world.
“I think that the most jarring impact of this last year — on storytelling in general but certainly on this season of ‘Fargo’ — is the sense that our sense of reality is fractured and that what you think is real and true can be completely opposite from what someone next to you thinks is real and true,” Hawley said.
As an example, Hawley brought up a key scene from Season 3: After a particularly jarring experience, Sy Feltz (Michael Stuhlbarg) returns home to his wife, hugs her, and says, “The world is wrong. It looks like my world but everything is different.”

“I think there are a lot of people who feel that way [right now],” Hawley said. “Like, ‘Wait what? I went to bed in one America and I woke up in a different America.’ And there’s something violent to that.”
Fighting back against the violence is Gloria Burgle, embodying the world’s general symbol of truth, as well as “Fargo’s”: a police officer. Gloria’s journey in Season 3 has filled her with tremendous doubt, and there are many, many scenes of a flustered, frustrated, but resolute Gloria fighting for truth in a world ready to accept a lie. Whether she was rejecting her new chief’s theory that there was a serial killer targeting people with the last name “Stussey” or resisting the transition to technology over one-on-one human interaction, Gloria is both a dying breed and a beacon of hope.
“The war Gloria is really fighting is for the truth itself, that a case can be solved, that we can look objectively back into the past and say, ‘This happened,'” Hawley said. “This idea that you would be presented with a reality that you fundamentally don’t believe in is something that I think a lot of people who live in other countries are more familiar with, but as Americans we’re really not.”
Who wins the war between facts and alternative facts will be revealed in the “Fargo” finale, but the casualties have been clear throughout the season. For now, we wait to see who else will join the list and pray, for the sake of our country, that Gloria is not among the fallen.
The “Fargo” Season 3 finale airs Wednesday, June 21 at 10 p.m. on FX.

The “Fargo” Season 3 finale airs Wednesday, June 21 at 10 p.m. on FX.

Well the road to Wrestlemania continues for the WWE with the Raw-exclusive pay-per-view Fastlane, one of the companies lesser PPV’s… For most fans this is just the WWE spinning it’s wheels while waiting for the biggest event in the wrestling calendar.
Taking place at the Bmo Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Fastlane opens with a video package showing all the big matches: Owens vs Goldberg, Bayley vs Charlotte, and Reigns vs Strowman. So we know right there that the only titles possibly changing hands in this event will be either the Womens Title or Universal Championship – Gallows and Anderson surely to retain given the non-focus on their match.
As always Spoilers if you haven’t seen the PPV yet…
Opening Fastlane is Samoa Joe vs Sami Zayn in a match that is sure to Not live up to the fantastic Nxt rivalry the pair had prior to their subsequent call-ups.

Peak TV finally got the Primetime Emmy Awards that it deserves.
Sure, “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” repeated their wins Sunday in the top drama and comedy series categories (giving HBO its second year of winning both). And legends like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jeffrey Tambor continued their trophy dominance.
But underneath that, a whole new generation of fresh faces picked up their first-ever Emmys on Sunday night. Actors and actresses that seemed like long-shots just a few years ago were instead embraced by a large voting body that appears ready to embrace the new talent earning raves in this new golden era of Peak TV. Good thing the Emmys don’t have term limits: Veep‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus just made history with her sixth win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Her fifth consecutive win for playing VP-turned-President Selina Meyer on HBO’s political satire gives her a total of six lead actress wins (including one for The New Adventures of Old Christine), pushing her past Mary Tyler Moore and Candice Bergen for most wins in that category. (And that doesn’t even include the 1996 supporting actress trophy she took home for Seinfeld.)

Convicted serial killer Lonnie Franklin’s death sentence Wednesday was welcome news to the families of his murder victims looking for closure, but for Nick Broomfield, director of the HBO documentary about Franklin “Tales of the Grim Sleeper,” the story is far from over. Though Franklin has been brought to justice for a series of murders dating back to 1985, the systemic problems that prevented him from being caught for 25 years remain today, according to Broomfield.

Growing up, I went through many phases before discovering my true passion. I was a swimmer, a roller-skater, a gymnast, and even a Girl Scout. But as a small child, I was drawn to ballet. When she decided to start an all-girls school in a remote village in Afghanistan, a few elders came to Razia Jan asking her to start a boys school instead. "Don't you know that boys are the backbone of Afghanistan?" they asked her. "Well, girls are the eyes of this country, and till they are educated you will all be blind," she retorted. Beth Murphy's What Tomorrow Brings is not just about Razia, the courageous woman who stood up against the men in her village to ensure that every girl gets an education. It is about the young women of Afghanistan, who seek refuge from the imprisonment of their own religion and the highly patriarchal society. After the Taliban's ban on girls education, the village wakes up to heart-wrenching radio bulletins about grenade and poison attacks at other schools in and around Afghanistan. Here, going to school is in itself a huge risk.
