Amazon MGM Studios have landed rights to Benjamin Percy’s novella “American Criminal,” with Gavin O’Connor negotiating to direct.
The film, which Hidden Pictures and NeoText will produce, follows a professional thief who, after being apprehended by an FBI agent, is coaxed into infiltrating a violent Midwestern gang with the goal of dismantling them from the inside. However, what the FBI agent doesn’t know is that the thief is also orchestrating the largest – and last – heist of his life.
O’Connor has directed a number of popular and critically acclaimed works, including “Warrior” with Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy, “The Accountant” with Ben Affleck, “Miracle” with Kurt Russell, and “Tumbleweeds,” which featured an Oscar-nominated turn from Janet McTeer. He most recently retimed with Affleck on 2020’s “The Way Back,” the story of an alcoholic basketball coach.

Now a new poster for The Menu has arrived online, and this one features both Taylor-Joy and Fiennes, as well as Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) and several other cast members. Janet McTeer is the sort of interview subject that when you get them on the phone they are more interested in talking to you than the preassigned subject. That’s not to say McTeer isn’t proud of her work on “Ozark,” but she had a reputation as an ego-less interview for decades. And in a pandemic where many stars have let their hair or guard down for one reason or another, she’s the same charming Janet McTeer who won over awards season nine years ago when on the campaign trail for “Albert Nobbs.”

The coronavirus postponement of Bond film “No Time to Die” is the box-office story of the moment, one that could augur future blockbuster shifts. At a minimum, it wreaks a measure of havoc on the release calendar: Other films stayed away from its original date, and now it will open during the highly competitive Thanksgiving holiday period. The risks to studio and theater revenues show how a virus could upend an industry.
However, this weekend also brings a near certainty: Box office should easily fall short of $140 million, pushing the year-to-date number below 2019 for the first time. Last year, “Captain Marvel” accounted for about 75 percent of the business for a weekend total of $211 million. That makes keeping the release schedule steady even more important for theaters.
Meanwhile, this weekend’s top releases are proceeding as we head into spring break and Easter over the next few weeks. Few brands are as prime as Pixar,...

Exclusive: Golden Globe, Tony and Olivier Award winner Janet McTeer (Ozark) has been cast as a lead opposite David Oyelowo in The President Is Missing, Showtime’s drama pilot based on the novel by President Bill Clinton and James Patterson from Christopher McQuarrie and Anthony Peckham.
McTeer is a series regular in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s Ozark, which has been completed, after recurring in Season 2. No one would comment, but her casting in The President Is Missing as a main series regular raises questions about her future on Ozark beyond Season 3.
In The President Is Missing pilot, a powerless and politically aimless vice president (Oyelowo) unexpectedly becomes president halfway into his administration’s first term when President Jillian Stroud goes missing, despite his every wish to the contrary. He walks right into a secret, world-threatening crisis, both inside and outside the White House. Attacked by friends and enemies alike,...

"I don't collaborate with law enforcement." Disney+ has unveiled a trailer for a wacky, fun detective story for kids called Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, adapted from the book series of the same name written by Stephan Pastis. Winslow Fegley, younger brother of Oakes Fegley, stars in this film as Timmy Failure - an 11-year old boy who believes he is the best detective in town. He runs the agency "Total Failures, Inc" with his best friend, an imaginary 1,200 pound polar bear. This is actually premiering at the Sundance Film Festival later this month in the kids section known as "Tumbleweeds", before arriving on the Disney+ streaming service in February. This also stars Ophelia Lovibond, Kyle Bornheimer, Wallace Shawn, Chloe Coleman, Nicole Anthony, and Craig Robinson. This really looks like an excellent kids movie. Here's the official trailer for Tom McCarthy's Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, from YouTube:...

Our Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds currently have Julia Garner out front to win for “Ozark,” but her co-star Janet McTeer, who joined the gritty Netflix drama in its second season, is back in 14th place. While McTeer appears to be a longshot with 100/1 odds, here are four reasons why you shouldn’t underestimate her:
1. “Ozark’s” five Emmy nominations last year
Netflix released the first season of “Ozark” in July 2017, so nearly an entire year before the 2018 Emmys. Keeping that, and the stacked drama field, in mind, its five nominations were an impressive feat, especially if you consider where it ended up hitting: Jason Bateman not only crashed the Best Drama Actor lineup, but also managed to sneak into Best Drama Directing (“The Toll”) alongside co-director Daniel Sackheim (“Tonight We Improvise”). It also got nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.

This story about Janet McTeer first appeared in the Comedy/Drama/Actors issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Janet McTeer never thought she’d play a Marvel Comics character — but when the opportunity arose to be in the second season of “Jessica Jones,” she found it was perfect for her.
“I thought, ‘I’m not quite sure how to do that comic book world,'” said the British stage and film actress, who received Oscar nominations for “Tumbleweeds” and “Albert Nobbs.” “It’s not really what I do, and I’m not sure how I’d do it or if I’d be any good at it. But when I watched it, I realized it was more like people with superpowers having super problems. It was very dark and twisted and real.”
Photographed by Steven Gerlich for TheWrap
McTeer said she soon understood what creator Melissa Rosenberg and the writers wanted from the character.

This article marks Part 12 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Awards, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
In 1977, while Meryl Streep was making her big screen debut with a small role in Fred Zinnemann‘s Oscar-winning “Julia,” young filmmaker Wes Craven was scaring the pants off moviegoers with his X-rated horror flick “The Hills Have Eyes.”
Seven years later, in 1984, Streep already had two Oscars under her belt, yet was putting fans to sleep with the tedious Robert De Niro romance “Falling in Love.” Meanwhile, Craven was at last breaking down the door into mainstream cinema, with his “A Nightmare on Elm Street” proving a sleeper hit and making burnt serial killer Freddy Krueger a household name.

She tied with Viola Davis for the most Oscar nominations earned by a black actress (three). She became the first black actress to earn two consecutive nominations (following the 2016 film “Hidden Figures”), and became the first to earn multiple nominations after a previous win.

Over the course of her career, Annette Bening has been nominated for four Oscars. That, of course, shouldn’t come as a surprise because this is one extremely talented lady. What might shock you, though, is that Bening has taken home zero of those coveted statuettes — but this could all change with her latest work: 20th Century Women.

Following the massive success of Game Of Thrones, it was inevitable that actress Emilia Clarke (best known for portraying Daenerys Targaryen in the series) would begin making her rounds in Hollywood in a variety of genres. Unfortunately, Terminator: Genisys didn't really turn out too well, and the film's sequels have been put on hold until further notice. Though in addition to booking within the genre of action films, Clarke has also turned to making more low-key, emotional flicks like Me Before You.

Meryl Streep breaks Oscar record: Oscar 2014 nominations (photo: Meryl Streep in ‘August: Osage County’) The 2014 Oscar nominations were announced earlier today at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and Thor: The Dark World and Snow White and the Huntsman actor Chris Hemsworth — whose Rush was completely shut out — made the announcements, including that of Best Actress contender Meryl Streep, in the running for her performance in John Wells’ August: Osage County. Streep’s competitors are her Doubt and Julie & Julia co-star Amy Adams for David O. Russell’s American Hustle, Sandra Bullock for Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, Judi Dench for Stephen Frears’ Philomena, and likely winner Cate Blanchett for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine. (Emma Thompson’s absence from the Best Actress roster — for her performance in John Lee Hancock’s Saving Mr. Banks — was quite a surprise.

‘Tell No One’ thriller to get Hollywood remake (photo: ‘Tell No One’ 2006, with François Cluzet and Marie-Josée Croze) Gavin O’Connor, among whose credits are Tumbleweeds, Warrior, and the upcoming Natalie Portman action drama Jane Got a Gun, "is in negotiations" to direct Universal and Warner Bros.’ thriller Tell No One, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Whether the film will be a direct remake of Guillaume Canet’s Ne le dis à personne (2006), starring François Cluzet and Marie-Josée Croze, or be based on the original source — Harlan Coben’s novel Tell No One — is unclear. Canet and Philippe Lefebvre were credited for the screenplay of the French movie. Frequent Steven Spielberg collaborator Frank Marshall (The Color Purple, War Horse, Jurassic World) is producing the new Tell No One. Everyone involved with "Jane Got a Gun" seems hellbent for leather in making the movie actually work out as another cast member has joined the getting less-troubled Western.
Gavin O'Connor is making his sudden last-minute directing gig less stressful by surrounding himself with people he's worked with before, such as new recruit Noah Emmerich, according to Deadline. "Jane Got a Gun" marks the fifth collaboration between Emmerich and O'Connor, following "Tumbleweeds," "Miracle," "Pride and Glory" and "Warrior."
Emmerich has been cast as the husband of Jane (Natalie Portman), an outlaw who comes home one day chock full of bullet holes. Hubby has become the target of a notorious gang (led by Bradley Cooper), so Jane hires the services of an ex-lover (Emmerich's "Warrior" pal Joel Edgerton) to protect him, her and their farm.

Okay, so "Jane" is no longer a calamity. One day after gifted Scottish director Lynne Ramsay shockingly pulled out of Natalie Portman-starring Western "Jane Got a Gun" on the very first day of shooting, her replacement has already been drafted: Gavin O'Connor, the sturdy multi-hyphenate whose films include "Tumbleweeds," "Pride and Glory" and, most recently, "Warrior." With O'Connor on board, shooting will get under way tomorrow. No time to waste. It's a smart choice, in my opinion. O'Connor is a solid, sensible craftsman who began in the independent realm and has since brought that sensibility to more mainstream projects. His 1999...

So, writer-director Gary Ross, having helped make "The Hunger Games" into a gigantic hit, has decided to move on to new pastures. As we reported last week, Ross will be focusing on a new project, and after a few days, Lionsgate officially confirmed (admitted) he will not be helming "Catching Fire," with both the studio and the director issuing formal statements.
Which leaves Lionsgate needing to find someone to replace him, and find someone soon. They have a script from "Slumdog Millionaire" writer Simon Beaufoy, a release date of November 22, 2013, and a scheduling window they need to hit before Jennifer Lawrence has to move on to shooting the "X-Men: First Class" sequel. With all that in mind, we've picked out five names who we think would be good candidates to fill the hole left by Ross on "Catching Fire." Update: Channing Tatum will produce, but not star in the film according to his PR reps.
So what on Earth could Gavin O'Connor, the man behind testosterone-driven fare like "Warrior," "Pride And Glory" and "Miracle" (okay, he also did "Tumbleweeds," but you know what we're getting at), find interesting in a Peter Pan reboot starring Channing Tatum? Well, here's the thing. Once you get the idea of Tatum in green tights out of your head (and the studio should really consider ceasing to refer to this as a Peter Pan movie) it's actually not a bad concept.
In the works since last spring when Sony picked it up, "Neverland" (previously known as "Pan" or "Peter Pan Begins") was penned by Billy Ray ("Breach," "Shattered Glass," that "24" movie that might not happen) and actually twists the tale into a London-based romp that finds Captain Hook chasing a child abducting Peter Pan.
