As the looming specter of a Trump presidency casts its long shadow over the new year, thrillers that hinge on secret government conspiracies are more apt than ever, and “Homecoming,” the first scripted podcast from Gimlet Media, is just the tonic for those who wish to bask in unpatriotic feelings (without doing anything drastic like moving to Canada.)
Scripted podcasts, while not the medium’s bread and butter, represent a significant sub-set of the trend that saved radio. The most prominent of which is “Welcome to Night Vale,” a bi-monthly cult hit that traverses all sorts of conspiracy theories and heightened realities. While one might wish the reality in “Homecoming” were heightened, the shocks in this tense mystery are far too plausible for comfort, especially in the brave new world of 2017.

Chances are that you don’t know the name Pablo Larrain right now, unless you’re an avid follower of world cinema, as the Chilean filmmaker has made a number of festival favorite films in his home country before 2013’s No, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, which was nominated for an Oscar.
Larrain followed that a few years later with the lower key The Club, but this month, he’s going to have two movies released that will certainly put him closer to the spotlight here in the States.
The movie that’s likely to get the most attention is Jackie, a film that looks at the days before and after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963, as seen by his wife and widow Jackie Kennedy, as played by Natalie Portman. She’s surrounded by an amazing ensemble cast that includes Peter Sarsgaard, Billy Crudup, John Hurt, Greta Gerwig,...

In celebration of Japan’s oldest film studio, Nikkatsu, Arrow Video assembles its first collection of titles reflecting the late 1950s inauguration of a star system contracted for their ‘Diamond Line.’ This trio of features reflects the rising popularity of extravagant genre narratives in the evolving system, and includes obscure titles from master auteurs such as Seijun Suzuki, Toshio Masuda, and Buichi Saito (early titles from Suzuki and Masuda were also part of a notable 2009 Eclipse series set, Nikkatsu Noir).
The pearl of the collection is Suzuki’s Voice without a Shadow, a rare gem from the master director’s early period. One of four films he made in 1958 (another being the early classic Underworld Beauty), it feels rather heavily modeled after various American film noir tropes, but in true Suzuki fashion, much more complicated. If “Beauty” felt like a generous Sam Fuller riff, then “Voice” seems a recalibration of something like Sorry,...

Not even the most gasoline-aided wildfire will spread like a good ol’ media controversy. Those behind the actual information are purportedly fighting for a specific cause, whilst whoever’s on the opposing side are curious and seeking information – all while anyone in between just wants it to be over. Regardless of where you sit, either way, you’re receiving updates as to what’s going on at all times.
So, take a newsworthy angle that always guarantees traction, add in the most passionate and loyal bunch of fans this side of a wrestling pay-per-view, and you’ve got a hearty recipe for guaranteed headline-grabbing attention.
That said though, in the pursuit of creating said headlines, too many – far too many – outlets don’t arm themselves with all the facts before kickstarting the most controversial angle possible. It’s always far easier to scream “Hey, look at this!” than it...

Top Ten Scream Queens Halloween is over until next year, but the equally bewitching Day of the Dead is just around the corner. So, dead or alive, here's my revised and expanded list of cinema's Top Ten Scream Queens. This highly personal compilation is based on how memorable – as opposed to how loud or how frequent – were the screams. That's the key reason you won't find listed below actresses featured in gory slasher films. After all, the screams – and just about everything else in such movies – are as meaningless as their plots. You also won't find any screaming guys (i.e., Scream Kings) on the list below even though I've got absolutely nothing against guys who scream in horror, whether in movies or in life. There are...

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
Dennaton Games
Devolver Digital
PS3, PS4, Ps Vita, PC, Mac
When an indie title hits on the kind of success that Dennaton Games’ Hotline Miami (a top-down murder simulator, and yes, that’s as deliberately vile as it sounds) found upon its initial release, expectations are bound to be high for its successor. Unfortunately Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number has a bit of a tall order to deliver upon from the get-go in this regard, and, in some ways, is unable to make the grade on the years of hype and fanfare that followed the original .
While the first game cast you primarily as a murderous thug receiving phone calls from a nameless source, a source that subtly directs you to commit one atrocity after another, the second game has cast you as over a dozen characters effected by the events of Hotline Miami. While...

It’s that time of the year again, as Sony is spotlighting several anticipated new digital titles as part of their annual Spring Fever sale, which will run for a massive 8 weeks, which is double the length of the Spring Fever sale from last year.
Starting next week with the release of Helldivers, each week, until the end of April, Sony will be highlighting some of the more unique digital titles set for release over the next few weeks. These include the likes of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, Axiom Verge, Shovel Knight and more. PlayStation Plus members will even receive an additional 10% discount on each title during their respective launch weeks, so all the more reason to check them out.
In addition to the discounts offered on each new release, Sony will also be discounting several popular video game and film franchises each week during the Spring Fever sale.

Dennaton's ultra-violent sequel Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is out in March, it's been announced...
The original Hotline Miami was a nightmarishly violent top-down shooter - fast-paced, bloody, and as 80s as a pair of flecked trousers.
We've known for some time that indie developer Dennaton has been working on a sequel, Hotline: Miami 2: Wrong Number, which the studio says is the concluding chapter in the story. Originally scheduled for release last year, the game now has an official release date - and there's not long to wait.
Hotline Miami 2 comes out on the 10th March for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac and Linux. The game will come in two flavours - a regular edition, priced at £10.99, and a special edition, which includes the Hotline Miami 2: Remix Ep ("featuring six select music tracks remixed by Moon, Scattle and Carpenter Brut" a press release enigmatically suggests). The latter will...

One of the most frequent complaints that has been lobbed against the PlayStation 4 in the past year or so has been the lack of games, especially exclusives. Last fall in particular it was a visible problem as the rival Xbox One had several well-regarded exclusives hit such as "Sunset Overdrive," "Halo: The Master Chief Collection" and "Forza Horizon 2" on top of the cross-platform Aaa titles that both consoles share.
In early 2015 though the tables have turned to some degree with the imminent release of Ps exclusive titles like "The Order 1886" and "Bloodborne". With Sony now seemingly fighting back, they've done something unexpected - publishing a complete list of all their upcoming 2015 game releases.
Many still don't have specific dates yet, dates which aren't expected to be announced until around the time of the big conventions closer to mid-year, but here's the list as it stands now.

Available for the first time on Blu-ray or DVD and remastered in high definition is forgotten film noir Witness to Murder, a 1954 Barbara Stanwyck potboiler also starring George Sanders and Gary Merrill. As written by Chester Erskine (The Egg and I, 1947), the film feels like plenty of other narratives, though its frustrating contrivance of hysteria as dramatic tension places it squarely within a particular male dominated paradigm. In particular, the film feels eerily reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, which actually opened a month after this Roy Rowland directed venture, doomed to be overshadowed and quickly forgotten. But, magnificently photographed by John Alton, it’s a shadowy and angular motion picture, enjoyable for its considerable melodrama as a portrait of misinformed and misogynistic gender politics.
Cheryl Draper (Barbara Stanwyck) witnesses a young woman being murdered in the apartment complex adjacent to her own. She calls the police to report what she sees.

It seems that Sony’s planned gamescom 2014 surprises have been let out of the bag early, now that the Internet has gotten hold of a list that briefly appeared on the tech giant’s event page. What’s so notable about this leak doesn’t have anything to do with a previously unannounced triple-a title or anything like that, though; instead, fuss is being made over the fact that indie darling Journey is being ported over to the PlayStation 4, along with other notable PlayStation 3 downloadables.
Not only will Journey make the jump from last-gen to current-gen, but ports of Pix the Cat, Hustle Kings and The Unfinished Swan also seem to be in the works. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other games at the convention, including big guns like The Order: 1886, Destiny and Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes, as well as Pixeljunk-related Nom Nom Galaxy and Ps Move spook show,...

1. The term "gaslight." The Ingrid Bergman thriller "Gaslight" -- released 70 years ago this week, on May 4, 1944, wasn't the original use of the title. There was Patrick Hamilton's 1938 play "Gas Light," retitled "Angel Street" when it came to Broadway a couple years later. And there was a British film version in 1939, starring Anton Walbrook (later the cruel impresario in "The Red Shoes") and Diana Wynyard.
Still, the glossy 1944 MGM version remains the best-known telling of the tale, with the title an apparent reference to the flickering Victorian lamps that are part of Gregory's (Charles Boyer) scheme to make wife Paula (Bergman) think she's seeing things that aren't there, thus deliberately undermining her sanity in order to have her institutionalized so that he'll be free to ransack the ancestral home to find the missing family jewels.

While over the top violence was certainly one thing I was expecting to see in the latest trailer for Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, that doesn’t mean I can’t be shocked by just how violent it truly is. Dismemberment, skull crushing and other forms of bodily harm are just a few of the things that this new look at the game provides.

Dennaton Games’ original Hotline Miami will be coming to the PlayStation 4 sometime later this year, according to Devolver Digital’s Nigel Lowrie, who revealed the news during an interview with Destructoid at last week’s Gdc.
Devolver Digital and Dennaton Games originally worked together to release Hotline Miami back in 2012 for the Windows PC and would later release the title for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2013. The PlayStation 4 version of the game will feature cross-buy support so that you can take the game on to go with you on the Vita.
While no release date for Hotline Miami on the PlayStation 4 has been revealed yet, one should probably expect it to come before the game’s sequel launches later this year. Currently shooting for a third quarter 2014 release date, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number was already announced as a PS4 title and it would be a little odd if...

Unlawful Entry: Donohue’s Debut a Promising Idea with Faulty Execution
Director Zachary Donohue brings the home invasion thriller to the millennial doorstep with his directorial debut, The Den. Unfortunately, the advanced technology that furthers the narrative of his film gets reduced to a gimmick, wedding itself to the same glorious faults of the found footage genre as it manages to arrive feeling just a titch outdated already, as well as managing to be a visual eyesore with its insistence on unfolding almost exclusively from computer and/or phone cams. Distant, very distant echoes of classic women in peril films from the vaults of vintage Hollywood may put one in mind of something fun and classy (and incredibly campy) like the sickly Barbara Stanwyck character in Sorry, Wrong Number (1948), an element that lends Donohue’s material incredible and unprecedented mileage in building tension. But an eventual marriage with standard...

A Tweet sent out from the Official Hotline Miami Twitter feed has confirmed that Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is shooting for a third quarter 2014 release. The Dennaton Games developed sequel was first announced back in June 2013 and will be hitting the PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Linux, Mac and PlayStation Vita.
As the next entry in the absurdly violent shooter franchise, Hotline Maimi 2: Wrong Number will continue the story of Jacket following his killing spree against the Russian mob. Part of the game will place you into the shoes of an actor acting out the events of the first film for a movie, while another part of the game will focus on the cult-like fans of Jacket who wish to follow in his bloody footsteps.
The original Hotline Miami was one of my favorite titles of 2012, so I’m eagerly anticipating stepping into the neon-soaked world of the series once again.

Above: Us poster for Forbidden (Frank Capra, USA, 1932)
In honor of the month-long retrospective of the films of the great Barbara Stanwyck starting today at Film Forum in New York, I thought I’d select my favorite Stanwyck posters. Brooklyn-born Ruby Catherine Stevens made 85 films over 37 years in Hollywood so there is an awful lot to choose from. But the remarkable thing about looking back at these posters is how artists seemed to have had a hard time capturing her likeness. The poster for one of her earliest films, Capra’s 1932 Forbidden, above, captures her beautifully, but the poster for Stella Dallas (1937), her first Oscar-nominated role (she never won, shockingly), seems to be of a different actress entirely. As for the sexed-up illustration on the flyer for The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933), in that she looks more like Jean Harlow. Some of my favorite posters for her films are the Swedish and Danish designs,...

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Well, here's a nice switch. After a pair of sequels in which raunchy comedy and silly splatter were much more important than anything resembling a legitimate scare or creepy idea, everyone's favorite killer doll is back with Curse of Chucky, a sixth chapter that clearly wants to be taken a bit more seriously. Or at least as seriously as one can take a movie in which a doll possessed by the soul of a serial killer stomps around a creepy old mansion and hacks people to bits.
Needless to say the Chucky films have always been tongue-in-cheek horror films. The first three entries -- Child's Play (1988), Child's Play 2 (1990), Child's Play 3 (1991) -- were sometimes suspenseful, occasionally scary, and frequently sprinkled with generous portions of gory bits. By the time we got to Bride of Chucky (1998) and Seed of Chucky (2004), the character had degenerated into a completely self-aware and self-mocking parody.

"We were really sad that some people were so affected by it, because maybe they had been through something like that of their own." That's Dennaton's Dennis Wedin speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun about the controversial scene in the forthcoming "Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number," and their plans to remove it from demos while they decide whether to make changes to the sequence.
Back in August, PC Gamer writer Cara Ellison was the first to speak up about the scene in question, where the player-controlled character, Pig Butcher, drops trou in front of a powerless woman, every indication that he's about to rape her. The scene then pulls back to reveal this is, in fact, a film being shot within the game, the sequence nothing more than an elaborate feint.
Wedin says that the sequence stops where it does because the Dennaton team didn't want to follow the trend of one-upsmanship in horror,...

Sony made another big impact at Gamescom, boosting the ever-growing anticipation of the PS4's arrival, but it wasn't all about the new platform, and the PS3 and Vita also featured in the presentation.
The whole thing kicked off with the global reveal of the new PS4 interface, which looks sleek and highly connected.
Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3 kicked off the show proper, with news of the upcoming movie based on the racing franchise. Other games, such as Beyond: Two Souls were mentioned, along with Little Big Planet Hub. This will be a new free-to-play title on PS3 launching later in the year.
Things then moved to GTA V and it's PS3-exclusive pack that includes custom headphones. Also, PS3 owners who pre-orders GTA V from...

Sony's GamesCom conference has wrapped up and while the biggest news was the official announcement of the release date, plenty of other news came out during the event. From new games, new trailers, Vita news, and a slew of indie games, there was plenty of information being doled out. If you didn't get a chance to watch the conference live with us, we've decided to lump all of the news into one convenient spot for you. Come inside to check it all out!
Indie Games
Let's start off with the slew of Indie Games Sony showed off. They've made it pretty clear that they were devoted to the indie communtiy, and their announcement of games coming exlcusively to the PS3/Vita/PS4 (at least timed-exlcusives) made that pretty clear. Here are the games they announced were having their exlcusive console debuts on the Sony platforms:
* Minecraft (PS4)

Gamescom is currently underway in Germany, and Sony made a big splash at the convention with their press conference to promote products for the PS3, Vita and, more importantly, the PS4.
PS4
The big news was the announcement of the system's release date - North America on November 15th and Europe on November 29th.
Sony spoke up their relationships with indie developers strongly and how this "indie development revolution" will be a big part of PS4's future.
As a result, the most disappointing thing about the presentation was the lack of Aaa title announcements (even though they are known to be in the works). Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and Media Molecule are all confirmed to be working on such projects but they did Not announce any of them (ie. no "Uncharted 4" announcement).
New game announcements include "Shadow of the Beast," the post-apoocalyptic game "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture," Tequila...

Women in Film: Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, and dozens of movie actresses in curious morphing montage A few dozen top international female movie stars, most of them Hollywood celebrities, are seen in the Women in Film morphing montage below created by Philip Scott Johnson. The faces belong to actresses from the 1910s to the early 21st century. (Image: The ‘Daughter’ of Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner — who sort of looks like a cross between Eleanor Parker and Cyd Charisse as well — in the Women in Film morphing montage.) Just as interesting as trying to identify each of the famous faces is stopping the video while the morphing is going on, so you get Daughter of Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner, or Daughter of Audrey Hepburn and Dorothy Dandridge, or Daughter of Michelle Pfeiffer and Sigourney Weaver. Some of those Daughters are quite pretty; others look like they’ve just landed on this planet.

Dennaton Games’ top-down, no-holds-barred shooter Hotline Miami will become available for both of Sony’s consoles on Tuesday, June 25th for North America – the game will be released in Europe the following day. This news comes hot on the heels of the studio announcing a sequel to the 2D game – Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number – following its continuous and deserved success since its PC debut in late 2012.
The studio confirmed that the game will be priced at $9.99, €8.99 or £7.29 when it hits the Playstation store. What’s more, Hotline Miami will support Sony’s cross-buy feature, which means after you buy said game on the Playstation 3, you can download the Vita version free of charge and vice versa. In addition to the original content, Playstation buyers will gain access to a brand new bull mask named Russell, which itself unlocks a black & white mode (save for the iconic red blood, mind you) when equipped.

It's one thing to know that a sequel to Dennaton Games' breakout bash-'em-up "Hotline Miami" was in the works -- the two-man team of Cactus Söderstöm and Denis Wedin have been casually tweeting about it since late last year -- but it's another to know that it's been officially announced or to have a gruesome teaser trailer as visual proof of its existence.
Accompanied by a sparse guitar riff and an unnervingly repetitious phone operator, the "Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number" trailer introduces its predecessor's hallmarks: top-down perspectives, bright neons, pixelated anti-heroes,alarmingly violent pipe-blows to the head.
As publisher Devolver Digital's press release put it so succinctly: "You’re a murderer. You murder people. Again. And again."
While the ultra-violent game mechanics seem largely unchanged, "Wrong Number" introduces a handful of different playable characters -- some from the original "Hotline Miami," some not -- to sort...

We movie-goers are an impressionable lot. We like to associate ourselves with our screen heroes; wear our underwear on the outside and whack each other around the head with plastic lightsabers. But although imitation may well be the most sincere form of flattery, we’re not just talking about tracking down t-shirts and trainers on eBay. We’re thinking on a much bigger scale.
Sometimes the effect is obvious. For example, most Bond films are glorified car commercials. Indeed, such was the demand for a shiny new Lotus Espirit (having featured in The Spy Who Loved Me) that, upon the film’s release, customers had to sign up for a three-year waiting list. Likewise, Marlon Brando’s sultry performance in A Streetcar Named Desire helped to hawk hundreds of thousands of t-shirts. Presumably, customers had to provide their own sweat, muscles and brooding sense of masculinity.
But other trends are less easy to spot.

Los Angeles, Feb 17: Actor Bruce Willis has revealed he used to call up his Hollywood idols just to let them know he is a "huge fan".

Los Angeles – Phyllis Diller emerged as a comic force during the era of the beatniks and talk show hosts who smoked cigarettes on camera. Beginning her career as a pioneer female stand-up act at 37 years old, she went on to establish a memorable character and show business longevity, working virtually all the way to the end. Diller’s passing was announced yesterday by her manager. She was 95.
Ms. Diller created an enduring stage presence with her outrageous mop of hair, outlandish outfits – especially through the swinging 1960s – and a foghorn laugh that was virtually one of a kind. Her act consisted of anecdotes and jokes regarding a fictional husband named Fang, the various in-laws surrounding them and a self-depreciating routine regarding her own wild looks. Ironically, later in life she became an advocate for plastic surgery, maintaining that basic look well into her later years.

Superstar comedienne Phyllis Diller died today in Los Angeles, California. She was 95. Diller was not the first female stand-up comic ( ‘Moms’ Mabely had been performing since the 40′s ), but her outrageous fashions and irreverent sense of humor established her as a media comedy sensation in the 1960′s. Before Rosanne Barr, Diller joked about the drudgery of housework ( and a clueless husband named ” Fang ” ) and her self-depreciating gags no doubt inspired Totie Fields and Joan Rivers. Ms. Diller ( born Phyllis Ada Driver ) was writing radio copy in the San Francisco area in the 50′s when she decided to enter the world of stand-up comedy. After success at clubs, she soon branched into television with an appearance on Groucho Marx’s quiz show ” You Bet Your Life “. After nightclubs she perhaps had her biggest successes in TV as a fixture of talk shows, variety shows and game shows, although she had little...

Legendary comedian and actress Phyllis Diller has passed away at the age of 95. Diller's career began in 1952 at Krow radio in Oakland. She was celebrated for her brand of kooky, odd-ball humor and, in the 1960s, began appearing in TV specials alongside Bob Hope. These appearances gave way to her very own program, "The Phyllis Diller Show," which aired from 1966-1967 and "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show" in 1968. She also appeared in dozens of movies, including "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number." In recent years, Diller did voice overs for such films as "A Bug's Life," "Family Guy" and made a raunchy cameo in 2005's "The Aristocrats." Diller reportedly died at her Los Angeles home, surrounded by family. The cause of her death has not been released. [via TMZ]...

Chicago – The art of the confinement thriller is tricky to perfect. If it’s done right, the audience will feel trapped within the suffocating confines of a prison, while their heart rate will move at the same pace as that of the onscreen victim. Yet since the world of the film is limited to such a small space, one misstep will cause the entire experience to crumble in an instant.
Rodrigo Cortés’s “Buried” trapped Ryan Reynolds in a coffin for the entirety of its running time, and found multiple ways of opening up the world of its story without ever once cutting to an exterior shot. It played on the audience’s imagination much like the 1943 radio drama, “Sorry, Wrong Number,” while giving Reynolds the opportunity to deliver his best work to date. It wasn’t a masterpiece, per se, but it sure was an ingenious and effective thriller.

The fourth in a short series celebrating the films of the Pathé-Natan company, 1926-1934.
Apart from the innovative films of Gremillon and Ozep, and the super-epics of Raymond Bernard (available from Criterion), Pathé-Natan produced a lot of slick commercial properties decorated with much the same kind of melodrama and glamor as Hollywood movies of the era.
L'équipage (1935) was one of the last Pathé-Natan productions before the studio went bankrupt amid charges of swindling and mismanagement, and they spent lavishly on it. By now, the influx of German talent that had contributed much to the style of French cinema had become a massive flood, as the Nazis had banned Jews from working in cinema. A talent exodus resulted, and Paris was the first stop for nearly everybody. And so Anatole Litvak, eventually bound for Hollywood, pitched up in the City of Light, where, for instance, he made Mayerling...
