After retiring from politics, Glenda Jackson made three films: one for TV, Elizabeth is Missing, and two for the big screen, Mothering Sunday and the upcoming The Great Escaper. The people behind those projects remember a fierce, funny and formidable titan
Aisling Walsh, director, Elizabeth is Missing (2019): As a girl, I’d seen Glenda on screen as Elizabeth in Mary, Queen of Scots and I never thought for a moment I’d get to work with her. It was the greatest privilege of my career.

North West is proving designer goods aren't just for grownups. On Sunday night, the 6-year-old got dressed to the nines for a viewing of her dad, Kanye West's, new opera Mary at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Like mom Kim Kardashian, North went for an elegant yet-understated look comprised of Skims' cozy collection in all-white, which she paired with white boots, a pearl choker and a $10,000 Hermes Birkin. She gave the classy ensemble a modern twist by wearing her long locks in a space bun style. Clearly, no expense was spared for the premiere of her dad's opera. Just her Skims cozy collection look cost at least $268, not considering the cost of making it properly sized for a...

The final trailer has been release for 1917. Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre, and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren, Callum McDougall and Brian Oliver.

The most uneven of David Cronenberg’s early commercial horror features, the 1977 “Rabid,” was nonetheless probably the biggest success among them, in large part due to the novelty value of seeing “Behind the Green Door” porn superstar and erstwhile Ivory Snow detergent-box model Marilyn Chambers in a lurid mainstream vehicle. It’s also the one ripest for remake, if only because his just-prior “Shivers” aka “They Came from Within” and ensuing “The Brood” should be left alone — largely reviled upon release, they’re now rightly considered genre classics. Lacking their outrageous ideas and cumulative narrative momentum despite some striking elements, “Rabid” nonetheless has a strong-enough basic concept to warrant revisiting.
In theory, “twisted twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are fair candidates for that job: Like Cronenberg, they’re Canadian, attracted to body-horror, and have cut their own path from micro-budget projects toward the mainstream. They also claim they dislike remakes as a rule,...

They say good things come to those who wait. We might be able to slot actress Mary Kay Place in that description, thanks to some surprising awards season attention from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for her heartfelt performance in “Diane” as a deeply caring retired widow who can’t forgive herself for her past choices no matter how many casseroles she takes to those less fortunate than her.
The wintry working-class drama, a throwback to a time when cinema celebrated relatable yet flawed characters, premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival — where it won three honors including Best Narrative Feature. Distributed by IFC, it opened without much fanfare in late March while managing to achieve a 93% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. “Diane” is currently available for viewing on Hulu.

Way back when, Disney had "the vault," where they took movies out of home-video circulation to increase the demand for VHS tapes and DVD/Blu-rays. But now, Disney programming is widely available to stream, especially since Disney+ was introduced on Nov. 12. You can even stream the Pixar movies The Incredibles 2 and Coco from Netflix, but unfortunately, the latter won't be available through the streaming service for much longer. The incredibly charming animated film, which came out in 2017, is about an aspiring young musician named Miguel in rural Mexico who finds himself in the Land of the Dead after his grandmother Mama Coco's passing, where he embarks on a journey to learn about his rich family history. If you want to watch it on Netflix, you'll have to do it fast, because it's leaving on Nov. 29.

NBCUniversal and Ideas United have partnered to produce a video submission contest targeting emerging filmmakers to promote Universal Pictures’ thrilling new epic, 1917, from Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes. You won’t find a horror movie with more barnacles on it this year than Michael Goi’s “Mary,” but that would be true even if this nautical nightmare was seaworthy. The supernatural thriller “Mary” takes place almost entirely on a haunted boat, and those arthropods make a cameo appearance that’s only slightly more memorable than anything Oscar-winner Gary Oldman is doing above the waterline.
Oldman stars as David, a fisherman who’s been working on other people’s boats his whole life and dreams of owning his own boat. His wife Sarah (Emily Mortimer) sends him a picture of a boat she found at auction, but when he gets there he only has eyes for a derelict fixer-upper named “Mary,” the same name as their youngest daughter.
It’s fate, David argues. It’s a money pit, Sarah counters, but she quickly defers to her husband’s poorer judgment.

Julius Amedume’s neo-noir psychological thriller “Rattlesnakes,” rock documentary “Suzi Q” and the elevated horror thriller “Itsy Bitsy” are among the new titles that Kew Media Distribution will be introducing to buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market, which kicks off Thursday.
They join a slate that includes three buzz-worthy documentaries: Rodney Ascher’s “Glitch in the Matrix, Michael Jackson expose “Leaving Neverland,” one of the talking points at Sundance, and Nick Broomfield’s “Marianne & Leonard – Words of Love,” also a hot title in Park City.
Scripted and directed by Amedume, “Rattlesnakes” tells the story of California life guru and family man Robert McQueen. What begins as a typical day of therapy sessions with his clients takes a turn for the worse… He’s expecting to meet a regular client in a rented apartment, but instead he’s ambushed by three masked men and held hostage.

“The Favourite” lived up to its name with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which graced the homegrown period drama with a commanding 12 film award nominations Wednesday. But Bradley Cooper and Alfonso Cuaron made history, Glenn Close gained some momentum and Spike Lee got some love.
Here are 10 takeaways from this year’s nominations:
1. Give Me A Fiver: Bradley Cooper and Alfonso Cuaron both scored what appears to be a first in BAFTA history, racking up five nominations in a single year across five different disciplines. Cooper is a nominee for best director, leading actor, adapted screenplay, original music and film for “A Star Is Born.” The sudden bonanza gives him seven BAFTA nods throughout his career, tying BAFTA icon Daniel Day-Lewis, who won four trophies for acting. Cuaron nabbed noms for best film, director, original screenplay, cinematography and editing for “Roma.”
2. Close-ing In: Glenn Close’s momentum continues.

Margot Robbie (“Mary Queen of Scots”) was among the more surprising nominations last week for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was a big surge for her film after it had underperformed at other awards season events. Pundits had pegged Robbie and co-star Saoirse Ronan — both Oscar nominees for Best Actress just last year — as major contenders early on this season, but then another film about British royals, “The Favourite,” stole some of its thunder with critics and prognosticators. Is “Mary” once again in it to win it?

All the film festival buzz about “Green Book” – especially after Peter Farrelly’s fact-based, racially-charged road trip through the ‘60s-era Deep South won the coveted People’s Choice Award in Toronto this year – apparently hasn’t reached the masses just yet. Universal, which took over the title from its indie division, Focus Features, after Steven Spielberg got a gander and declared “Green Book” to be the best buddy picture since “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” took a chance by opening it in 25 theaters in 17 markets this past weekend before adding 1,000-plus more theaters this Wednesday.
The result? A somewhat underwhelming $313,00 gross with a per screen average of $12,520, while four theaters in New York and Los Angeles will averaged a somewhat better $25,000. Jennifer Esposito is to star alongside Gary Oldman in supernatural thriller 'Mary.'
The "NCIS" and "Blue Bloods" actress will play a character named Lydia in the independent feature, according to sources close to the production.
The cast includes Oscar-winner Oldman and Emily Mortimer, with Michael Goi ("American Horror Story") directing from a screenplay by Anthony Jaswinski ('The Shallows'). It is set for release in 2019.
The story centers on a a struggling family that buys an old ship at auction with high hopes of starting a charter business, only to discover her horrifying secrets once in isolated open waters.
Esposito, who shot her scenes for the movie earlier this year, has raised issues of discrimination in recent weeks, claiming she has been overlooked for roles because she is Italian-American.
In a Facebook post, the actress said: "Have a question for my actor friends — ever get totally blocked by casting directors?
“In the last month, I was told I was not white enough for five different jobs... Not getting a job is one thing, but not even being allowed in a room to have an opportunity is another."
Esposito is also set to co-star with David Arquette in 'Apalachin,' a story about the famed meeting of the heads of the mafia in 1957 in New York state. Currently filming, a release is planned for 2019.
