The story lines were a bit campy but on many occasions there was a very serious subject matter that was brought to the forefront.

Mrs. Shullivan and I first saw the live stage play in New York on Broadway and then we watched the touching film that singer/songwriter Glen Hansard starred in. It was a wonderful film adaptation of the stage play.

Although this is my favorite CRIME genre film there is one scene in this film where a biker gang enters Italian crime boss Sonny's (Chazz Palminteri who wrote this stage play and screen version) restaurant/bar and proceeds to try and destroy the bar. Sonny politely offers the bikers a free drink and then he gently asks them to leave his establishment. When the bikers refuse to leave, and continue smashing glasses, Sonny calmly walks to his restaurants front door, locks the front door, and then says to the bikers "Now you can't leave", at this dramatic point in the film the Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter" is blaring in the background when Sonny's own gang with bats in hand enter the restaurant from the back entrance way and they proceed to beat the living crap out of these supposedly fearless bikers before they are thrown out the front door after being beaten badly. It is an epic song and an even more epic film that is deserving of an honorary mention as a musical for this scene alone. Read my review on IMDB for further details.

This biography shows that the Jackson 5's rise to stardom required a lot of (physical) pain and sacrifice to make it all the way to the top of the rock and soul charts under the Motown label with Barry Gordy and Diana Ross's support. Joe Jackson (their father) and Katherine Jackson (their mother) also sacrificed a lot to make their own and their children's dream a reality.
