No matter what, or maybe as a former history student myself at school (mainly focusing on 20th century history, from the last of the Romanov dynasty in Russia to the fall of the Berlin Wall), there is a certain critical eye to especially historical events which would be played out on the screen.
What I had watched which once marked a moment in time in the real world, whether always universally known or not.

Not often something I watched is totally based on something I was taught in class, but this was one.
The final days of the Romanov dynasty in Russia was what really opened my history textbook back in school which acted as a precursor to the rise of Vladimir Lenin (which was also in the textbook too). So what is depicted of the family is accurate, in terms of who are the members of the immediate family leading up to their final days. Yes, spoiler, including the reputation of Rasputin (no, not the Boney M song...which is actually based on him).

The local TV drama series to make me first see the potential of using the form of mass media to help explain real-world history. I was actually only nine when this aired, before realising five years later studying the history of my country in class, some of the people featured in the drama series were actually real-life people who lived through the Japanese Occupation (from 1942 to 1945) here in Singapore during WWII. The history lesson I never thought I needed!
But then again, this is based on those times. The period of time in history when Singapore was not the 'impregnable fortress' it has always been claimed.
