1. Carnivàle (2003–2005)

TV-MA | 60 min | Drama, Fantasy, Mystery

During the Great Depression, an Oklahoma farm boy and a charismatic minister learn that they are key players in a proxy war being fought between Heaven and Hell.

Stars: Michael J. Anderson, Adrienne Barbeau, Clancy Brown, Debra Christofferson

Votes: 46,881

Daniel THE PHANTOM Knauf created this briefly popular supernatural drama for HBO who assigned Ronald Moore the lion's share of creative control based on a string of prior high profile successes including STAR TREK: VOYAGER. During it's 24 episode, 2 season run CARNIVALE earned 15 Emmy nominations & won 5 technical awards the year of it's debut. After Moore's departure to launch BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Knauf assumed the mantle of show-runner and ratings collapsed forcing the network to cancel the expensive series despite the protests of it's loyal fanbase. Troubled actor Nick TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES Stahl starred as Ben Hawkins; a mysterious young man with terrifying supernatural powers who joins a Carnival caravan during the Dirty Thirties. Ben has apocalyptic visions centered on rising radio star Brother Justin Crowe who is a creature not unlike himself. In a brief introduction by Michael TWIN PEAKS Anderson we learn that into each generation is born an avatar of light & dark who will war for dominion of the Earth. Crowe was played by HIGHLANDER actor Clancy Brown and the two leads are endlessly fascinating as their respective story arcs carefully bring the pair together for a climactic duel to the death in the show's finale. Along the way we're introduced to a host of characters essayed beautifully by a large international cast including Patrick PHENOMONON Bauchau , Clea AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM Duvall, Adrienne MAUDE Barbeau, Amy PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS Madigan, Linda DUNE Hunt, Tim PARTY OF FIVE DeKay & Ralph THE WALTONS Waite. Throughout the run of the show attention was lavished on period detail which lent every eerie episode an air of authenticity. I only wish as much love was poured into the special effects which weren't nearly as convincing & frequently undermined the scares the writers & cast worked so hard to convey. It's a strange & unique viewing experience that will demand & command your attention in equal measure and comes highly recommended despite an unresolved cliff-hanger guaranteed to break your heart a little and leave you wanting more.

2. The Keep (1983)

R | 96 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

34 Metascore

Nazis are forced to turn to a Jewish historian for help in battling the ancient demon they have inadvertently freed from its prison.

Director: Michael Mann | Stars: Scott Glenn, Ian McKellen, Alberta Watson, Jürgen Prochnow

Votes: 14,315 | Gross: $3.76M

THE KEEP was based on the popular novel of the same name by F. Paul Wilson who despised Michael MANHUNTER Mann's glossy adaption while the director blamed the movies critical & commercial failure on the source material. I wasn't a huge fan of either. Jurgen TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME Proshnow plays a German officer stationed at a Romanian fortress called THE KEEP who's at a loss to explain the seemingly supernatural force claiming the lives of his invading soldiers. To get to the bottom of the mystery, he summons Dr. Cuza & his lovely daughter Eva from the concentration camps (neither looking any worse for wear) to assist in translating a message found scrawled in blood at the site of the killings. The old man (Ian CATS McKellen) discovers a scary entity trapped in the ancient fortification which promises to kill every Nazi in exchange for his freedom. The monster played by Michael ONE MAN'S WAR Carter looked a little like Darkseid from the DC comics visually although it's roots lay closer to THE GOLEM and DRACULA. Molasar is it's name; Rasalom in the book reminding me of the Dracula/Alucard name switcheroo which is a well known cliche within the genre just as Cuza's transformation into Molasar's Renfield-like human henchman is par for the course. Against his daughter's objections, Cuza attempts to free the beast by removing a crucifix-like artifact which holds him there as a prisoner. Smart Girl! Eva (Canadian actress Alberta LA FEM NIKITA Watson) knows Molasar's up to no good and that only an eternal warrior played by Scott THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS Glenn has the magical power necessary to avert the apocalypse should Molasar escape. Paramount ruthlessly slashed Mann's original 130 minute cut down to 96 after preview audiences said they hated it & refused to shell out any more cash to complete the special effects. Mann had to settle for some striking smoke & light effects and an obnoxious synth soundtrack from Tangerine Dream to help plug the holes in his multi million dollar sinking ship. THE KEEP has a glib, music video quality that's eye catching but not in the least bit scary. Wilson wrote 3 direct sequels (Reborn, Reprisal & The Night World) which incorporated elements & characters from his earlier best-sellers The Tomb & The Touch none of which I'd recommend.

3. The Goodbye Girl (1977)

PG | 111 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

64 Metascore

After being dumped by her live-in boyfriend, an unemployed dancer and her 10-year-old daughter are reluctantly forced to live with a struggling off-Broadway actor.

Director: Herbert Ross | Stars: Richard Dreyfuss, Marsha Mason, Quinn Cummings, Paul Benedict

Votes: 16,197 | Gross: $102.00M

THE GOODBYE GIRL was the 7th of 11 collaborations between legendary producer Ray FUNNY GIRL Stark and play write Neil Simon & the 1st of 5 movies the popular author filmed with real-life wife Marsha AUDREY ROSE Mason. Mason (who's nowhere's near as good an actor as co-star Dreyfuss) attacks the part of a recently dumped single mom with enthusiasm but I didn't find her or her performance especially appealing. She & her daughter are forced to allow Richard JAWS Dreyfuss' character into their New York apartment when it's revealed Paula's ex sublet the space to the actor who's in town doing a gay version of Richard III off boadway. The decades have been kind to this quippy, witty, feather-light romantic comedy from director Herbert FUNNY LADY Ross. FAMILY actress Quinn Cummings shines bright as Lucy; Paula's wise-beyond-her-years daughter who is immediately won over by the charming actor and received an Academy award nomination for her film debut. The leads have an undeniable chemistry that connected powerfully with audiences making THE GOODBYE GIRL one of the top grossing pictures of 1977 after STAR WARS and SMOKEY & THE BANDIT. Both earned Oscar nominations but it was Dreyfuss who took home the statuette beating Best Actor nominee Woody Allen for his work on ANNIE HALL. Stark & Simon (who also lost in the categories of Best Film & Best Screenplay) worked with Dreyfuss again in 1993's critically acclaimed LOST IN YONKERS. David Gates chart-topping single drawn from the film's title got shafted on Oscar night failing to even get nominated and truthfully his song was my favorite part of the movie. An unproduced sequel called Mr. Famous failed to find a studio backer and a slightly toned down TV movie remake starring Patricia Heaton & Jeff Daniels aired in 2004. It's my second favorite romantic comedy after SID & NANCY.

4. Sid and Nancy (1986)

R | 112 min | Biography, Drama, Music

76 Metascore

The relationship between Sid Vicious, bassist for British punk group Sex Pistols, and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen is portrayed.

Director: Alex Cox | Stars: Gary Oldman, Chloe Webb, David Hayman, Debby Bishop

Votes: 34,701 | Gross: $2.83M

Where do I begin to tell the story of how great a love can be? The sweet love story that is older than the sea, the simple truth about the love she brings to me...She fills my heaaarrt! Now sing it just like Gary Oldman would channeling The Sex Pistols Sid Vicious and you have arrived at your destination. SID AND NANCY tells the mostly true story of punk icons Sid Vicious and his schizophrenic, American girlfriend Nancy Spungen who collide like particles of anti-matter; obliterating social mores, reason & even reality during their heroin fueled death spiral courtesy of cult film-maker Alex REPO MAN Cox and a little (forgivable) dramatic license. It's hard to say if Gary DARKEST HOUR Oldman and Chloe SHAMELESS Webb are actually any good because their performances are so extreme! Webb especially; as Nancy who hysterically screams much her dialogue like she's on the phone to 9-1-1. Oldman (who knows a thing or two about co-dependence & addiction IRL) later went on record denouncing his work on the film which was co-written by Cox and Abel ROADSIDE PROPHETS Wool yet, for the life of me I can't imagine anyone else in the role! Somehow they manage to keep their harrowing, disastrous love story accessible and occasionally even laugh-out-loud funny on their relentless march towards mutually assured, drug addicted self destruction. Cox captures the look, feel & sound of the punk movement and can mosh in the pits with the best of 'em. Look for Courtney STRAIGHT TO HELL Love, Iggy ROCK AND RULE Pop & Kathy ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS Burke in colorful supporting roles.

5. Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)

R | 98 min | Horror, Musical, Sci-Fi

32 Metascore

A worldwide epidemic encourages a biotech company to launch an organ-financing program similar in nature to a standard car loan. The repossession clause is a killer, however.

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman | Stars: Paul Sorvino, Anthony Head, Alexa PenaVega, Sarah Brightman

Votes: 26,552 | Gross: $0.14M

While watching REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA my pussy clamped so tightly shut I couldn't pee for 3 days and nearly died. Torture-porn director Darren Lynn Bausman (SAW II, SAW III, SAW ad nauseum) is the man who directed this DOG based on a lousy 10 minute 'musical' called The Necromerchant's Debt that played in somebody's backyard back in 2000. The horrible show was expanded and performed in empty experimental theatres courtesy of writers Terrance Zdunich & Darren Smith who later denied plagiarizing a short story published by Eric Garcia in 1997. Garcia's story was also expanded to novel-length as The Repossession Mambo and sold to Universal about the same time Lion's Gate agreed to distribute REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA provided the director pay for it himself. The thematically identical flicks BOMBED spectacularly with REPO MEN earning back 18 million of it's 32 million dollar budget while Lion's Gate buried their ugly musical version in a handful of North American theatres before pulling the distribution plug after only a few days. Even IF Universal's REPO MEN hadn't flopped they probably wouldn't have made too much of a fuss over the similarities to Lion's Gate's knock off because it was so insignificant and unpopular. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER's Anthony Stewart Head plays a 'repo man' for GeneCo who lease organs to those in need. Failure to pay your bill contractually entitles the greedy corporation to cut your guts out. The ballyhooed score is an artless, ear-splitting monotonous mess with each tune crashing loudly into the next like a pile up on the interstate. Co-star Paris HOUSE OF WAX Hilton nabbed another Razzie award for her participation in this pretentious garbage. Plans for a sequel were immediately scrapped never to be mentioned again although Bausman & Zdunich would attempt (and FAIL!) once more to tap into the cult film market with the equally cheap and atrocious THE DEVIL'S CARNIVAL in 2012. Makes The Asylum's HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3 sound like OKLAHOMA! by comparison.

6. The Godfather (1972)

R | 175 min | Crime, Drama

100 Metascore

The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.

Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton

Votes: 2,013,699 | Gross: $134.97M

In 1990 the Library of Congress announced THE GODFATHER would be preserved in the National Film Registry for it's aesthetic, historic and cultural significance. What took so long, is what I want to know?! This ESSENTIAL viewing experience opened to universal praise becoming the top grossing movie at the time of it's release & earned an astonishing 11 Academy Award nominations for the following categories; Best Director, 3 for Best Supporting Actor (James Caan, Al Pachino & Robert Duvall), Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Original Dramatic Score & won for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor (Marlon Brando) & Best Picture. The Oscar nod granted to Nino Roca for Best Original Dramatic Score was revoked on a technicality however he would get to keep a statuette for his extraordinary musical compositions for THE GODFATHER PART II. Marlon SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT Brando gives the performance of a lifetime as Don Vito Corleone; an aging mob boss defending his family & interests against a crime syndicate in post WWII New York along with his sons Sonny (Caan) & Micheal (Pacino) and their trusted lawyer; Tom Hagan (Duval). Diane LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR Keaton played Kay, Michaels 2nd wife. The pair became lovers IRL during filming and remained a couple until 1990. Don Corleone's only daughter Connie (Talia PROPHECY Shire) is trapped in an abusive marriage to the treacherous Carlo (Gianni LASERBLAST Russo). Their lives play out in operatic fashion under the artful hand of director Francis Ford Coppola who also wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo; the author of the all-time best-selling novel on which the film was based. They've loaded THE GODFATHER with more classic scenes & quotable dialogue than can be counted on your fingers & toes. The run time of 3 hours allowed as much of the magnificent novel as possible to make it to the screen but you're probably going to want to see THE GODFATHER SAGA which clocks in at nearly 7 and 1/2 & incorporated Parts I-II and the footage that had to be trimmed for their theatrical release. Endlessly influential even decades later. Followed by an equally masterful sequel in 1974.

7. The Godfather Part II (1974)

R | 202 min | Crime, Drama

90 Metascore

The early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York City is portrayed, while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.

Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton

Votes: 1,364,883 | Gross: $57.30M

THE GODFATHER PART II delves into the origin of the Corleone family from the start of the 20th century when 9 year old Vito Andolini (Marlon Brando's legendary character in THE GODFATHER) survives the hit put out on his family by an Italian gangster named Cicci (Joe MANIAC Spinnell). The boy flees to New York hiding his identity with a new surname promising to return to Italy one day to have his revenge. The boy grows into a man doing whatever is necessary to ensure his own family survives. Robert THE KING OF COMEDY de Niro steps into the part of Vito Corleone with authority earning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his unforgettable performance. When his own criminal activities begin to blossom his life and livelihood are threatened by the local mob boss Fannuci (Gaston THE SICILIAN CHECKMATE Moshin). Vito makes Fannuci 'an offer he can't refuse' paving the bloody road to his own ascension to the Don of the most powerful crime syndicate in New York; an honor he would one day share with his son; Michael. Michael's life unfolds in juxtaposition to his father's humble beginnings in this brilliantly directed film which serves as a prequel & sequel to Francis Ford Coppola's beloved masterpiece THE GODFATHER. After Vito's death, Michael (Al SCARFACE Pacino) is himself targeted for assassination by someone within his inner circle who is in cahoots with a rival gangster named Roth (Lee GOING IN STYLE Strasberg). The young Don's investigation into the betrayal draws him into international political intrigues (circa 1960) and much closer to home than anticipated when Michael realizes his own wife Kay (Diane THE FIRST WIVES CLUB Keaton) is a greater threat to the Corleone family than he could ever imagine. Other characters adding fuel to this white hot crime drama include the family enforcer Clemenza (Played this time by B. GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM Kirby, Jr.), lawyer Tom Hagen (Robert DEEP IMPACT Duvall), Michael's siblings Fredo (John THE DEER HUNTER Cazale) & his sister Connie (Talia ROCKY Shire) and a treacherous rival for Michael's empire named Pentangeli. Michael COOKIE Gazzo received an Oscar nomination for his interpretation of Pentangeli while THE GODFATHER PART II earned a whopping 11 in total. Shire & Strasberg also earned Best Supporting Actress/Actor nominations while de Nire took top honors for his majestic work. The unerring attention to period detail resulted in an Oscar nod for Best Costume Design and another win for Best Art Direction. Composers Nico Roto & Carmine Coppola (Talia Shire & Francis Ford Coppola's dad) won for Best Score while Pacino would have to wait till 1993s SCENT OF A WOMAN to claim a statuette as Best Actor. Francis Ford Coppola took home the gold for Best Director and for Best Adapted Screenplay which he shared with Mario EARTHQUAKE Puzo. THE GODFATHER PART II also took home the honor for Best Picture in direct competition with Coppola's excellent thriller; THE CONVERSATION. This ESSENTIAL viewing experience was selected for preservation by The Library of Congress into the National Film Registry in 1993 for it's cultural, aesthetic & historic importance. Followed by THE GODFATHER PART III.

Four weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.

Director: Danny Boyle | Stars: Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Alex Palmer

Votes: 446,068 | Gross: $45.06M

Before I begin, let's talk about viruses for a moment, shall we? They are (figuratively & literally speaking) on the tip of everybody's tongue these days so the timing is right. Here we go...I'm not afraid of microbial life. Our bodies are made of retrovirus down to a genetic level. Microbes live in us on us and all around us in numbers which are difficult to articulate. We spend our days moving through them like fish swimming through the sea. Five miles below our feet they exist in the strata of rock to such a degree they outweigh us as a species. Contrary to what you may have heard in the fake news press microbes are the bringers of life and more to the point; a building block of life. Outside of strict laboratory conditions we as a species have absolutely no control over them in any way shape or form. And that's okay because even with over 100,000 plus variants on the go which are infectious to our species cell phone sales are at a record high so let's just all calm down because it's not the end of the world. Unless you're a character in Danny SUNSHINE Boyle's apocalyptic thriller 28 DAYS LATER. A man-made virus which spreads like wildfire escapes from a lab in Great Britain after tree-hugging environmentalists breach security to free the chimps being used as test subjects. The infection immediately transforms those it comes into contact with into murderously insane, powerful & fast-moving rage zombies with no antidote in sight. 28 DAYS LATER, Cillian THE DARK NIGHT Murphy's character Jim awakens from a coma and staggers out of the deserted hospital into the bleak empty streets of London eventually hooking up with fellow survivors Mark (Noah DRACULA UNTOLD Huntley), Selena (Naomi MOONLIGHT Harris), Hannah (Magan LIAM Burns) and Frank (Brian BREAKFAST ON PLUTO Gleeson). Before the fall of civilization the last communications received encouraged anyone left to make their way to a safe house only what the group find there is almost as deadly as the zombie infested streets they left behind. General West (Christopher THOR: THE DARK WORLD Eccleston) has lured survivors to his fortified estate to use women as sex slaves to repopulate the earth and anyone who says otherwise is subject to summary military execution. Jim believes Great Britain has been quarantined and makes a desperate break for freedom along with Hannah & Selena hoping to avoid slavery under the despotic rule of Major West. 28 DAYS LATER was the surprise horror hit of 2002 and rates along such genre favorites as George Romero's DAY OF THE DEAD or the North Korean zombie classic TRAIN TO BUSAN. This beautifully acted & solidly produced film resonates with strength even today and was followed by the equally important 28 WEEKS LATER in 2007.

10. 28 Weeks Later (2007)

R | 100 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

78 Metascore

Six months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes according to plan.

Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo | Stars: Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Robert Carlyle, Harold Perrineau

Votes: 293,961 | Gross: $28.64M

With Danny Boyle & Alex Garland otherwise engaged with shooting SUNSHINE, the responsibility fell to Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo & writer Enrique Lopez Lavine to helm this sequel to the 2002 hit 28 DAYS LATER. Both made a solid impression with Boyle for their cultish film debut; INTACTO. The Rage Virus which decimated the population of Great Britain appears to be contained. The infected slaughtered anything that moved and are now mostly dead themselves 28 WEEKS LATER from starvation. A military presence led by AVENGERS: ENDGAME actor Jeremy Renner & scientists monitoring the situation closely begin to slowly repopulate London with shell-shocked survivors. One of those survivors is a man named Don (Robert T2: TRAINSPOTTING Carlyle); a remorseful father who after watching his wife Alice fall to the horde has been left to raise their children alone. Tammy (Imogen BLACK CHRISTMAS Poots) & her brother Andy (Mackintosh THE MAN IN THE MIST Muggleton) break quarantine to return to their family home looking for mementoes and are astonished to find their mother alive but semi-catatonic. Under military escort the family is reunited and placed under observation by a virologist (Rose INSIDEOUS: THE LAST KEY Byrne) who believes something within their genetic makeup offers the world hope of finding a cure. Alice (Catherine SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE McCormack) is in fact immune to the disease as are her children who have never been exposed directly but her husband Don is not. By the time it's discovered Alice has Rage Virus gestating in her blood it's too late as Don has already made contact and doomed every man woman and child inside the safe zone. 28 WEEKS LATER moves even faster than those ferocious gut-munching rage zombies and is easily on par with the original. The special effects are first rate despite the smallish budget. You'd never believe it only cost 15 million to make considering the horrific spectacle unfolding on screen. This is George A. Romero calibre work from start to bitter end. Highly recommended.

11. The Cosby Show (1984–1992)

TV-G | 30 min | Comedy, Family, Romance

The goings-on in the life of a successful African-American family.

Stars: Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Tempestt Bledsoe

Votes: 36,373

Dr. Bill Cosby is the single greatest living educator, entertainer & human right leader in the world today & THE COSBY SHOW is but one of his crowning achievements. It is a monument the fake news Taliban has been trying to destroy just as they've tried to erase sculptures & art depicting the rich historic landscape of what America was. Around the free world our monuments are falling as are the heroes who inspired them; tried & convicted in kangaroo cancel culture courts & summarily sentenced to public 'execution'. It's a testament to the excellence of THE COSBY SHOW that it has survived the scorched earth assault on the character of the man who was the creative force behind the scenes and in front of the camera as the star of this all time classic comedy; Dr. Cosby. As for the accusations made in recent years they are completely false. And that's not based on personal opinion but on evidence. Let's take a look. Canadian Andrea Constand contacted a civil lawyer regarding a case she wished to file against Cosby & subsequently made differing statements to police on both sides of the border in Jan 2005 concerning an alleged drugging and misdemeanor assault from at least a year prior. She stated Cosby was her mentor and that she, as a lesbian, had no interest in him sexually but that he drugged her and while she lay there unable to speak or move was molested. The drug was an over the counter cough medicine offered to her as a guest in his home at a rather minimal dosage,,,1 1/2 tablets of Benadryl which is less than the recommended dosage for children aged 6-11. Constand (who resembles Howard Stern) was a basketball coach at Temple University at the time not a child. She chose not to pursue a claim against the makers of Benadryl because that's not whose cash she was after. Troubling facts began to emerge as police investigated her changing stories which Cosby correctly identified as a shakedown attempt. Why did Andrea continue to date Dr. Cosby after she says he drugged and molested her? She met him at hotel rooms bringing gifts or at his home and even arranged to meet with him while he toured. Police discovered Andrea asked Cosby for tickets to his live performance so that she could introduce him to her parents. Cell phone records obtained proved Andrea peppered her 'attacker' with calls on Valentine's Day. More revealing still was the fact Ms. Constand was dating another black businessman concurrently to Dr. Cosby who she hoped to convince to invest in a company she wished to launch. Funny thing for a lesbian to do; making fish lips to older black men on Valentine's Day. I won't bore you with the details any further other than to say Constand's criminal complaint was not pursued by police and rightly so. The damage to Dr. Cosby's reputation was magnified when other women came forward alleging claims identical to Constand's fictitious chronicle of events sparking a public relations nightmare for the actor. In a tactical move, Cosby's legal team caved to his former friend who revealed herself to be both a sexual predator & extortionist. Constand (who should have been locked up for her criminal activities) instead was paid handsomely to get out and stay out the actors life forever. Buuuut, the cat came back! She wouldn't stay away! She was back on his porch the very next day! More than a day but Dr. Cosby's ordeal was just beginning thanks to socialist media, fake news and a corrupt lawyer who knew how to manipulate both to her advantage. In December of 2014 Gloria Allred held a press conference demanding Dr. Cosby turn over one hundred million dollars to the women (herself receiving the bulk of the settlement contractually). Allred had agreed to represent exactly one of the women in court. Her name was Judy Huth. The other women subsequently trotted out for public display were signed to sponsorship agreements with Allred. The sponsorship deals included waivers attached stating that under no circumstance would Allred or her law firm represent any of the women she was actively recruiting in a court of law. Instead of being immediately disbarred Allred would prosper for her publicity stunts while assassinating the character of Dr. Cosby who was branded a 'rapist' in headlines around the world despite the fact he'd never been charged with that crime. To this day no physical evidence exists proving Dr. Cosby committed any crime against any of his accusers each of whom profited from their false accusations. Accusers Chloe Goins & Cindra Ladd were paid $50,000.00 each for their false accusations. Others like Janice Dickenson, Jewel Allison & Beverly Johnson scored book deals worth in excess of a million dollars. I have personally seen paychecks networks like NBC handed out to folks like Sammie Mays in exchange for their vicious gossip. Every time a teary-eyed accuser like Lili Bernard spoke to the complicit press holding up a photograph of herself she was paid thousands of dollars by her sponsor. It's a sleazy loophole that allowed the women to rake in cash under the table while maintaining they gained nothing from the accusations themselves. Elaborate timelines were constructed based on the lies being reported and backdated to brand Dr. Cosby a serial rapist. The vast majority of the accusation made were back dated decades and didn't exist prior to Dec 2014. Prior to Andrea Constant's civil court shakedown in 2005 none existed. That's where the timeline really begins not in the 1960s and I can prove it. The urban legend behind the false timeline used to tar and feather Cosby simply isn't possible. The BIG LIE that 'everybody in Hollywood knew' is stopped dead in it's tracks by anyone capable of looking away from the tabloid headlines & reading a history book...assuming history books haven't been burned & still exist. Dr. Cosby became the 1st black man to star in a network series; I SPY in 1965. His celebrity became a flash point of controversy and his solidarity with human rights icons like Martin Luther King, Jr. made him a threat. Cosby's telephones were tapped & he was closely monitored by the secret service who considered his pro-black politics subversive and a threat to the nation. The scrutiny intensified with the election of Richard Nixon who put Cosby on a list of 'the enemies' where he remained for years. If 'everyone in Hollywood knew' how was it exactly that the secret service who had the actor under surveillance didn't? The biggest lie of all emerged directly because of Constand who was in cahoots with (or friends of lol) many of the woman leading the me too charge. The lie has been told and retold for years & is the lock on the prison cell door behind which Dr. Cosby resides today. The lie which I know you've heard a thousand times goes as follows; Dr. Cosby admitted to drugging and raping women. The fake news may have water-boarded you with headlines & brainwashed you into believing it but the lie goes away the minute you ask yourself; IF Cosby admitted to drugging and raping women under sworn testimony in a court of law why was he not charged with a crime then and there? Cosby never admitted to drugging or raping anyone is the correct answer and the proof of that is the deposition. All you need to do is read the deposition for yourself to know that's right. In April of 2016 the blind, 80 year old human rights leader who had never so much as received a parking ticket in his adult life was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the misdemeanors alleged by Andrea Constand. Famed lawyer Tom Mesereau who represented Cosby described the trial as the most unfair he'd ever seen. It was a kangaroo court. The legality of the case even being heard was a concern but nothing about the trial was legit straight down to a ringer permitted to sit in the jury box who was a personal friend and neighbor to Judge Steven O'Neil's courtroom staff. O'Neil (who's wife is a me too spokesperson) branded Cosby a dangerous offender based on the instantly disprovable timeline and made an admission of guilt and an expression of remorse prerequisite to his early release. Such an admission will never be made. Dr. Cosby is a political prisoner and will serve his sentence just as Nelson Mandela did before him. It's the strength of character and his insistence on truth that makes THE COSBY SHOW so powerful. The top-rated series resonates with love and good humor & typifies Cosby's respect for all men & women regardless of ethnicity, nationality or age. The long running sit-com demolished the racial stereotypes our politicians and socialist media are rapidly rebuilding today. That alone makes this ground-breaking, historic landmark in the world of entertainment ESSENTIAL viewing despit what you may have heard to the contrary. Dr Cosby was freed today and in a public statement his lawyer all but quoted in part what's written here. I like a man who knows his history!

Martial arts movies can be unpredictable & outrageous enough on their own strengths or weaknesses but once they incorporate supernatural elements into the mix you can kiss logic goodbye and just hope for the best. KUNG FU ZOMBIE VS TIGERKRALLE (aka: TIGER LOVE) was directed by Kuang THE CROCODILE MEN Hui under the name Kahn Young. As to who wrote it is anyone's guess as my copy doesn't list one in the credits & I wasn't interested enough to look it up. Maybe he's ashamed? Chin SNAKE SHADOW LAMA FIST Hu plays a woman whose brutal father attempts to force her into marrying her cousin while driving the love of her life from the village. Depressed at the thought of incest & saddled with a baby she attempts suicide by jumping off the roof but magically survives and flees into the wilderness. While on the run she accidentally pisses on a tiger while having a squat and by doing so gains a telepathic bond with the animal. The tiger thereafter becomes her greatest ally and protector helping to raise her bastard son. The middle part of the pic focusing on the growing boys shenanigans will have you reaching for the fast forward button on your remote but once he's grown into hot Indonesian actor Lieh LIFE IS CHEAP BUT TOILET PAPER IS EXPENSIVE Lo the pace picks up considerably. The young man journey's back to his mother's village to confront his grandfather & his deadly henchmen. And by his side is the tiger...which shapeshifts into a powerful sorceress who uses spells to raise the dead & incantations to defeat her enemies. Don't say you weren't warned! Equally ambitious & awful.

13. The Weapons of Death (1981)

R | 90 min | Action, Drama

In San Francisco's Chinatown, a band of thugs kidnaps a girl for a large Chinese gang. Her half-brother gathers a team of expert fighters to get her back.

Director: Paul Kyriazi | Stars: Eric Lee, Bob Ramos, Ralph Castellanos, Louis Bailey

Votes: 134

Call me old fashioned but I prefer my Kung Fu pics not to have actors named 'Ralph' in the cast. It kills the mood faster than triple threat Paul DEATH MACHINES Kyriazi who wrote/directed/co-starred in this lively but confusing American martial arts adventure. Eric RING OF FIRE II: BLOOD & STEEL Lee plays the owner of a karate school who enlists his students as mercenaries to retrieve a relative from a gang operating out of San Francisco. Along the way they encounter sadistic bikers & even a pack of sword swinging female assassins laying in ambush in the hills over the city. Probably I wouldn't have hated it too, too much as a video store rental back in the day but it's aged badly and the choreography is surprisingly bland considering the odd mix of characters and weaponry.

14. Blood on the Sun (1972)

During WWII the Japanese occupied most of China and used the people for forced labor. They were notoriously cruel and some Chinese rose in resistance.

Directors: Sheng-Yuan Sun, Ting-Mei Sung | Stars: Ching-Ching Chang, Peng Tien, Hsiao-Ping Yang, Yuan Yi

Votes: 100

BLOOD ON THE SUN was the directorial debut for both Ting SECRET OF THE CHINESE KUNG FU Mei Sung & Sheng-Yuan CHINESE KUNG FU & ACUPUNCTURE Sun the latter also providing the grim screenplay. During the occupation of China by the Japanese during WWII the provincials were reduced to slave labor and subjected to indiscriminate acts of rape & murder. Peng EAGLE CLAW VS BUTTERFLY PALM Tien & Ching-Ching THE SEISURE SOUL SWORD OF A BLIND GIRL Chang lead the resistance against the oppressors, defying the lock-downs & fighting back by any means fair or foul. Their ultimate goal is to defeat the enemy in a violent tournament which occupies the final third of this pedestrian beat-'em-up. My print is washed out, poorly dubbed & cropped for TV screens so maybe this plays better in it's original theatrical format but even taking that into consideration there's not much by way of grace or artistry to the combat. There are no fanciful touches or moments of levity to set it apart making for a very repetitious sit-through until the finale which is livelier but not necessarily better. Below average.

Two best friends living on the streets of Portland as hustlers embark on a journey of self discovery and find their relationship stumbling along the way.

Director: Gus Van Sant | Stars: River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, James Russo, William Richert

Votes: 61,772 | Gross: $6.40M

MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO may be best remembered for the casting of River STAND BY ME Phoenix who died tragically outside a West Hollywood nightclub from a drug overdose not long after it's release. Rivers is superb as a narcoleptic male prostitute named Mike who's on a quest to find his mother who resides in Italy. Mike's best friend and occasional lover Scott is played by Keanu JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3: PARABELLUM Reeves. Scott is in reality the son of a wealthy businessman who dies a little every day knowing his heir is selling two kinds of crack on the streets of Portland, Oregon. I didn't think Reeve's was very good but he radiates charisma at times and deserves credit for accepting such a controversial role so early in his career. A host of wonderfully cast supporting players lent their talent to this surreal, mini-masterpiece including Udo PUPPET MASTER: THE LITTLEST REICH Kier, Grace TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN Zabriskie, The Red Hot Chili Pepper's Flea, James DJANGO UNCHAINED Russo and Mickey HELLRAISER: BLOODLINE Cottrell as the numeric inclined Daddy Carroll! The cast is uniformly brilliant working from a script which borrows generously from MIDNIGHT COWBOY, HENRY IV, OLIVER! and even 2001: A SPACE ODDESSY. Gus PSYCHO Van Sant displays the kind of confidence as a director that will remind you of Spielberg, Bogdanovich or even Orson Wells early in their careers. It's unquestionably his best film and ESSENTIAL viewing within the gay community. Connoisseurs of cult cinema will find much to love and admire.

Roger Ebert named EXTREMITIES one of the Worst Films of 1986. I hated him a little for that but after Farrah THE BURNING BED Fawcett's death he redeemed himself by expressing his outrage at the Academy for deliberately omitting her from the 'In Memorandum' segment on Oscar night 2010. This strong adaption of William SINATRA Mastrosimone's play is a testament to her ability as an actress, It's one hell of a performance and she carries the dramatic weight every minute she's on screen without falter. One night, Marjorie (Fawcett) is attacked by a rapist but survives the assault only to be confronted with the frightening truth that the L.A. police are powerless to do anything about it. Later, while her roommates (Diana MOMMIE DEAREST Scarwid, Alfre DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES Woodard) are away the stalker returns to finisher her off. James DJANGO UNCHAINED Russo & Fawcett share an unusual chemistry that's so tangible you can almost reach out and touch it. What's unusual is the strength of their repulsion which some attribute to the actors contempt for one another off camera. Whatever works. As Marjorie is tortured and tormented director Robert DOMINICK & EUGENE Young keeps this from wallowing in the same cinematic muck as garbage like I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE because the home invasion is so believable. The threat is real & the confrontation only escalates when her roommates unexpectedly return. Fawcett (who originated the part on stage) earned herself a well-deserved nomination for best Actress at the Golden Globes.

Cillian BATMAN BEGINS Murphy plays an astrophysicist named Capa on board the Icarus II who hopes to re-ignite the dying sun in the year 2057. The Icarus II carries a payload of nukes the size of Manhattan as did the original Icarus mission launched seven years prior. The ship under the command of Captain Pinbacker (Mark SHAZAM! Strong) lost contact with Earth before it could complete it's task. Tension mounts on board the rescue vessel as a series of accidents threaten their slim possibility of success. When the Icarus I is discovered in a low orbit around the sun crewmates played by Chris CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Evans & Rose X-MEN: APOCAYPSE Byrne agree with Capa their only hope may be docking with the ship to take advantage of it's explosive capability and use whatever air remains to keep themselves alive. Unbeknownst to the crew of the Icarus II the slightly cooked and completely insane Captain Pinbacker is still alive and determined to doom our world to a frozen Hell. He believes his last 7 years were spent in conversation with God & that it's his duty to murder the heroic astronauts. The junk science behind the death of the star is forgivable up to a point. The action is thrilling and the special effects are dazzling. But the minute the script deviates from a disaster formula not unlike THE CORE into an ALIEN rip off the illusion of credibility is lost. I didn't hate it but it's only slightly above average.

18. Rock & Rule (1983)

PG | 77 min | Animation, Fantasy, Music

A malevolent rock star kidnaps a singer to force her to participate in the summoning of a demon, and her band must help her stop him.

Director: Clive A. Smith | Stars: Don Francks, Paul Le Mat, Greg Salata, Susan Roman

Votes: 4,033 | Gross: $0.03M

Legendary Canadian Animation house Nelvana produced the wonderful musical fantasy under the direction of studio founder Clive Smith who many remember for the short-lived AMAZING STORIES spin-off FAMILY DOG. This would be their 1st theatrical feature sandwiched between releases such as HEAVY METAL, Ralph Bakashi's AMERICAN POP & Disney's 44 million dollar flop THE BLACK CAULDRON. 300 animators worked tirelessly on the film over a period of 4 years at a cost of 8 million dollars nearly bankrupting everyone involved. ROCK & RULE was a labor of love. Don MY BLOODY VALENTINE Francks provides the speaking voice for Mok; a badly aging glam rocker of the far apocalyptic future who needs someone capable of singing a demon into our dimension. That ability is out of his vocal range. The inhabitants of Nuke York are adorable & cuddly looking (mostly...) 'toons descended from rats, cats, dogs etc & live their colorful lives much as we did. Greg KATE & ALLIE Salata provides the vocals for a bass player/lead singing of a rock band. In the American print distributed by MGM that speaking voice has been dubbed by Paul THE BURNING BED Le Mat & the salty language Omar lets fly in the Canadian version has been censored to make ROCK & RULE even more kid friendly. Omar's a bit of a chauvinist and reluctant to share the musical stage with his pretty girlfriend Angel. Mok however can't wait to mike her knowing that not only can she sing a monster into our world she'll also serve as a perfect sacrifice to seal his unholy dealings. Prolific voice actress Susan RABID Roman lent her talent to the character while Debbie Harry of Blondie brings Angel to life musically. Lou Reed & Iggy SID AND NANCY Pop sang as Mok & Robin Zander of Cheap Trick offered his services as Omar. Earth, Wind & Fire rounded out the respectable musical cast of this fondly remembered genuine cult item which was picked up for distribution in the US. In a disheartening twist, MGM who built their reputation from dozens of classic musicals dating back to the golden age of Hollywood dropped the ball when it came to the audio components. The music in the american cut sounds a bit more like Saturday morning TV than the original print where you can hear the songs as they were intended to be heard by the artists who performed them. Why listen to me quibble? Decide for yourself. Check them both out!

Jamie THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Foxx delivers the performance of a lifetime as Django; a former slave who creates an elaborate con to swindle the freedom of his wife Broomhilda (Kerry FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER Washington) who is the property of a sadistic master known for feeding disobedient slaves to the dogs & forcing the healthier specimens to wrestle to the death in 'mandingo fights'. Fearing for the immediate safety of his wife at either the hands of plantation owner Calvin Candle (Leonardo TITANIC DiCaprio) or his treacherous man-servant Steven (Samuel PULP FICTION Jackson) Django and his business partner Dr. Schultz (Christoph INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Waltz) make their move while a blood-soaked double cross in the last act may ultimately prove to be all their undoing. The 1st rate cast is suitably augmented with a host of supporting players including Don MIAMI VICE Johnson, Tm CREEPSHOW Savini and original DJANGO star Franco Nero. Writer/director Quentin Tarantino has crafted another masterpiece woven from his eclectic cinematic tastes and spot on pop culture riffs. The roughness of the material may have hurt DJANGO UNCHAINED on Oscar night with many reserved voters flinching away from the subject matter. Waltz & Tarantino received Oscars for Best Supporting Actor & Best Original Screenplay while the other white artists were nominated for Best Editing, Best Cinematography & Best Picture.

There was only ever one sequel to the 1966 spaghetti western classic DJANGO and that was 1987s DJANGO STRIKES BACK both starring Franco Nero. Director Ferdinando COMIN' AT YA! Baldi & original DJANGO scribe Franco Rossetti intended DJANGO, PREPARE A COFFIN to be a formal sequel and it would have been had Nero agreed to make the picture. Popular actor Terence THEY CALL ME TRINITY Hill ably fills Nero's cowboy boots as the iconic gunslinger in this entertaining & well-cast sorta'-sequel. While robbing a stagecoach carrying a shipment of gold the anti-hero is double-crossed by his partner Dave (Horst THE CAT O'NINE TAILS Frank) & his henchman Lucas (George ANTROPOPAGUS Eastman) & left for dead. DJANGO devises a plan to take back his gold from the traitor who has the wealth and power to execute any man in town who stands against him. Disguised as a hangman DJANGO spares the lives of the of the men Dave has ordered to swing at the end of a rope provided they join forces with him. One of the men he saves (Jose DJANGO DEFIES SARTANA Torres) is planning to stab DJANGO in the back first chance he gets forcing his lusty wife (Bruna AGENT 3S3: PASSPORT TO HELL Simionato) to choose which man she'd like to see walk away when the dust settles. Of the scores of DJANGO knock offs floating around out there, DJANGO, PREPARE A COFFIN ranks as one of the best.

Growing up gay I tended to be more forgiving of the ugly stereotypes on film and television because back then it was usually tacky or nothing. SE SEI VIVO SPARA (aka: IF YOU LIVE, SHOOT!, aka: DJANGO KILL!) featured an entire gang of rape-happy, gay, Mexican cowboys AND featured bisexual actor Thomas AMISTAD Milian as 'The Man With No Name'! Yippie Ki Yay is what prepubescent me had to say to that. This Man With No Name (unrelated to Clint Eastwood or the character of DJANGO in the 1966 spaghetti western of the same name) is rescued from certain death by an Indian tribe after being double crossed and left for dead while jacking a shipment of gold. He saddles up & rides into the surreal Town With No Name where he must navigate the dangerous factions he finds there in order to recover his stolen loot. Milo DJANGO DOES NOT FORGIVE Quesada co-stars as the villainous Bill Temple whose hot-to-trot wife Fiory (Marilu MESSALINA VS THE SON OF HERCULES Tolo) & homophobic son Evan (Italian pop star Ray THE CASSANDRA CROSSING Lovelock) lend some off-beat sexual intrigue to the mix as does the treacherous Anderson (Franco THE HANDS OF A GUNFIGHTER Sanz) who offers The Man With No Name the sexual services of his insane wife who he keeps locked away in a room upstairs. This outrageous western happily incorporates horror movie cliches better suited to Grade Z material like THE BLOOD FROM DRACULA'S CASTLE & a few trippy visuals to further liven things up. Gilio DEATH LAID AN EGG Questi wrote/directed this off-the-beaten-path cult item with a scripting assist from Franco ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA Artcalli. The original 2 hour cut was almost immediately pulled from distribution & butchered down to 95 minutes & re-released as an unofficial sequel to DJANGO. Cult movie enthusiasts may want to have a look.

Neil THE COMPANY OF WOLVES Jordan wrote/directed this gender bending drama about an IRA terrorist (Academy Award nominated actor Stephen SISTERS Rhea) who's taken a black soldier hostage. The intention of the group led by Miranda HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE Richardson's Jude is to stage Jody's public execution. The captive (played by Forest ROGUE ONE Whitaker) forms a bond with Fergus sharing stories of his girlfriend; Dil. After Jody's accidental death while attempting to escape the terrorists, Fergus honors his friend's last wish & pays Dil a social visit. Jaye STARGATE Davidson (who also received an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actor) starred as the beautiful transvestite Jody was dating. By the time Fergus clues in that Dil's really a pecker-packer he's already a little bit in love which could pose a problem as Jude is on her way to kill them both. This low budget British film became an instant classic & pop culture flashpoint thanks largely to Davidson's immaculate, star-making performance as a lovely, young woman. THE CRYING GAME; as great as it is, wouldn't have worked with a lesser talent. THE CRYING GAME also earned Oscar nominations for Best Film Editing, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay which Jordan deservedly won. Boy George's soulful cover of the 1964 Dave Barry hit which plays over the end credits topped charts around the world. Essential viewing.

FIRST MAN INTO SPACE was a B-Movie co-production between England's Amalgamated Productions & American studio MGM who contributed the lion's share (< see what I did there?) of it's $100,000 budget. Hot-shot pilot Lt. Dan Prescott (Bill TORA! TORA! TORA! Edwards) is determined to be the FIRST MAN INTO SPACE despite the concerns of his brother Commander Charles Prescott (Marshall IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE Thompson). The friction between the brothers may have something to do with Italian actress Marla THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES Landi who plays Dan's lover; Tia Franchesca. Early into the mission Dan is bombarded with cosmic rays & meteor dust forcing him to eject as his rocket plummets back to earth. As Charles and Tia console one another reports emerge of a strange meteorite encrusted monster roaming the streets in search of blood. This forgettable & forgotten B&W sci-fi cheapie was flatly directed by Robert CORRIDORS OF BLOOD Day based on a script by John GRIP OF THE STRANGLER Croydon, Charles DEVIL DOLL Vetter & Wyott ROBOT MONSTER Ordung.

Director Wilber's real-life wife Lenita Lane played the ill-fated Mrs. Clark in this turgid, teenage melodrama. Rowdy Roddy HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN Piper is a terrible actor but he excels when it comes to physical combat. When he's in action you can't take your eyes off him and JUNGLEGROUND gives the late WWE wrestler an opportunity to shine. Piper plays an under-cover cop named Jake who goes up against a wild assortment of murderous goons called The Ragarockers led by a sadistic villain calling himself; Odin. Odin (J.R. GINGER SNAPS BACK: THE BEGINNING Bourne) has taken Jake's girlfriend (Torri STONEHENGE APOCALYPSE Higgins) hostage but promises to set both free provided he can survive one night on Ragnarocker turf. Doomsday cultists and the military close in as volcanos erupt transforming our atmosphere into a poisonous cloud threatening all life on earth. The junk science sinks like a stone; weighed down by cripplingly bad CG special effects & not one second of it's believable. I'm giving IMMORTALS an additional star just for those breath-taking CG special effects which which must have been dazzling on theater screens in the 3D format. Hundreds of programmers worked on this 150 million dollar sword and sorcery epic informally based on Greek mythology (particularly Theseus & the Titans) and each deserves a standing ovation for their contributions to IMMORTALS which would have sunk like a stone without. IMMORTALS was directed by Tarsem Singh who I only know from that catchy R.E.M. music video Losing My Religion & was based on a screenplay by brothers Charley & Vlas Parlapanides who made the recent Netflix cartoon BLOOD OF ZEUS. It was influenced by the success of Zack Snyder's 300 & the 2010 hit CLASH OF THE TITANS going as far as to cast closety 'Clash' actor Luke Evan as Zeus who descends to the mortal plain disguised as an old man to mentor a fearless warrior named Theseus who he has chosen to be his champion. Veteran character actor John FRANKENSTEIN UNBOUND Hurt plays Zeus in human form with handsome Henry BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Cavill breathing life into the part of Theseus. King Hyperion (the awesome Mickey THE WRESTLER Rourke) slaughters everyone in Theseus' village except those suited to live out their lives as slaves. While Zeus has forbidden the Gods of Olympus from interceding on his champion's behalf a virgin oracle (Freida RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Pinto) has a vision of Theseus discovering the fabled Bow of Epirus. Hyperion has spent his villainous life searching for the weapon because it can release the Titans he needs to overthrow the reign of the Greek Gods. The Oracle & a thief named Stavros (Stephen LEATHERFACE Dorff) engineer Theseus' escape from Hyperion's prison & quest to find the Bow with the King's Minotaur (Former WWE superstar Kurrgan) in hot pursuit. The protracted finale featuring the blood-drenched battle between the Gods of Olympus & the savage Titans & the duel to the death between Theseus & Hyperion is a show-stopping sight to behold! Despite it's undeniable visual power & magnificent cast IMMORTALS barely scraped even at the box office & contributed to the bankruptcy of production house Relativity Media in 2015.

Unfortunately for the trio, Rusty is the kind of psychopath who neither eats, sleeps or takes bathroom breaks for days at a stretch while stalking the attractive cast relentlessly from inside the cabin of his eighteen wheeler. The always reliable J.J. FELICITY Abrams polished the script by Clay DODGEBALL 2 Tarver for director John Dahl who's career highlights include episodes of DEXTER and RAY DONOVAN. JOY RIDE reminded me instantly of Steven Spielberg's DUEL, THE HITCHER and the obscure French-Canadian thriller THE PHONE CALL which starred Michael Sarrazin as a homophobic man whose rude behavior invites the ire of a stalker. JOY RIDE isn't as good as any of those movies but it works thanks to it's loud, suspenseful soundtrack & the always fearsome sight of a thunderous, smoke billowing, impossibly agile big rig...provided you're willing to turn your brain off for 90 minutes and go along for the ride. Alfred Hitchcock said; The better the villain, the better the movie. Mostly, the villain in the 1st JOY RIDE was a big rig patterned closely after the classic tv movie DUEL and not so much the barely seen driver (Rusty Nails) who was ably voice acted by Ted Levine. Rusty is the main protagonist this time & although he mostly keeps to the shadows it's clear Mark CHRISTMAS HOMECOMING Gibbon is nothing more than a countrified, monosyllabic goon. A couple of sisters ((Laura THR3E Jordan, Nicki JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 Aycox) hook up with their boyfriends (Kyle BIG SKY Schmid, Nick DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Zano) on their way to Vegas but become stranded in the desert when their car breaks down. They break into the deserted ranch owned by serial killer slash trucker Rusty Nails & steal his tarped car to go for help. What follows is pretty much what you'd expect from director Louis THE HITCHER II: I'VE BEEN WAITING Morneau & writers James THE HOWLING REBORN Johnson & Bennett DUMB AND DUMBERER TOO: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD Yellin. Rusty stalks the young, attractive cast from his 18 wheeler playing a cruel game of Simon Says barking orders like 'Take off your clothes', 'Cut off a finger' & 'Dress like a girl' over the CB radio while the cast waits to be kidnapped, tortured, threatened with sexual mutilation and murdered. JOY RIDE 2: DEAD AHEAD is more obnoxious than scary and shifting the focus to Rusty was a huge mistake given that it's a voice acted role & he's not been given a quotable line to say in the entire movie. Jack (Jamie Atkins) takes time from constructing a robot that looks like it's made of spray-painted styrofoam to buy some magic beans. The beans sprout into a giant stalk stretching up to the clouds as per the fairy tale but what he find there are sloppily rendered CG dinosaurs built from leftover or recycled code from other equally bad Asylum mockbusters. When Jack hurries back to his village the monsters give chase and the military is called in but are powerless to prevent the off-camera destruction. The only reason I'm not giving this DOG the DOG rating it deserves is for the casting of Ben DARK SHADOWS Cross & Jane COLOR OF NIGHT Marsh who deserve a lot better than what writer/director Mark EMPIRE OF THE SHARKS Atkins gave them to work with.

A small-time reporter tries to convince the police she saw a murder in the apartment across from hers.

Director: Brian De Palma | Stars: Margot Kidder, Jennifer Salt, Charles Durning, William Finley

Brian DRESSED TO KILL de Palma wrote & directed this low budget thriller which borrows just enough from Hitchcock's PSYCHO and REAR WINDOW to scrape by...barely. Jennifer SOAP Salt plays a reporter who witnesses the shocking murder of a black man (Lisle THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN Wilson). The crime was committed by a neighbor played by SUPERMAN actress Margot Kidder who delivers a bravura performance as twin sisters Danielle & Dominique who evade arrest by concealing their victim/crime inside a folding couch. A private investigator (Charles THE FURY Durning) is called in to help solve the case while the reporter traces the mystery surrounding the sisters back to a sinister doctor played by William PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE Finley who may pose an even deadlier threat! SISTERS (aka: BLOOD SISTERS) was a promising start for de Palma whose name would eventually become synonymous with the horror genre. Frequent Hitchcock collaborator Bernard IT'S ALIVE! Herrmann composed the evocative score to this gimmicky cult item which benefits greatly from an assortment of terrific character actors in supporting roles (Dolph GIMME A BREAK Sweet, Olympia MOONSTRUCK Dukakis, Bernard MIDNIGHT COWBOY Hughes etc). The scares (when they happen) come at you like cobra strikes but SISTERS is also hamstrung by an especially unsatisfying conclusion. Poorly remade in 2006.

The Hallmark Network produced this reasonably well-done disaster movie in conjunction with ABC. It was directed by George THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER T. Miller & starred a past his prime Corbin THE PUNISHER Bernsen as a retired scientist whose work was used in the development of underwater nukes. When a series of man made tidal waves cause devastation around the globe he and a fellow scientist (Julianne SISTERS Phillips) are falsely accused of manufacturing disaster. Is the terrorist one of the other scientists at the aquatic lab? Gregg BODY DOUBLE Henry & Harvey FARGO Presnell are viable red herrings. Perhaps the detective (Lawrence WELCOME BACK KOTTER Hilton-Jacobs) can help the fugitives solve the mystery before thousands more lives are lost. The CG special effects budget simply isn't sufficient to depict the devastation which largely plays out as news reports peppered with grainy stock footage but what they have is briskly edited and not entirely unconvincing especially a sequence involving the destruction of the Queen Mary. Tedi Sarafian & George Malke's teleplay would be recycled for the slightly superior 2007 mini-series KILLER WAVE which also features a traitor named Schiff.

FLOOD was based on the popular novel by Richard Doyle and adapted as a 2 part mini-series by Justin THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS Bodle for director Tony SUPERVOLCANO Mitchell. A perfect storm in the Atlantic sends a 50 foot high tidal wave towards London, England creating panic & chaos for the overwhelmed Deputy Prime Minister (David POIROT Suchet) who calls in the top experts in the field of marine engineering to prep for the pending disaster with no time to spare. Robert THE WAR OF THE WORLDS Carlyle & Jessalyn GLEE Gilsig star as the power couple determined to save as many lives as possible with the assistance of his father Leo (Tom LEONARD PART 6 Courtenay); a brilliant Professor with a head full of junk science and physics. The special effects & action sequences are the real star of the show and were rather spectacular for UK television at the time...not so much today. The choppy editing style used to hide the flaws is all too obvious & intrusive. Very similar to the 1976 Irwin Allen produced mini-series of the same name. The 106 minute cut is to be avoided at all cost & compares very badly to the 3 hour version which I didn't hate.

Canadian Bruce MY BABYSITTER IS A VAMPIRE McDonald helmed this mini-series remake of the 1997 Hallmark TV movie TIDAL WAVE: NO ESCAPE. The original teleplay by Tedi Sarafian & George Malko was expanded by William Gray who established himself in the 80s with hits like THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT and PROM NIGHT. Angus SAW IV Macfadyen stars as a retired scientist turned author whose undersea nuclear missile project Sea Lion has been hijacked by a former colleague. Evidence planted to incriminate the author for a series of man-made natural disasters sparks a nationwide manhunt as he goes on the run with a woman from the research facility (Karine PAN AM Vanasse) to clear his name & bring the real terrorist to justice. Nova Scotian actor Stephen LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY's BABY McHattie & Tom CATEGORY 7: THE END OF THE WORLD Skerritt co-starred in this fast-paced but empty-headed disaster movie which coasts by with some slickly produced CG special effects on a tight budget. Average, but I could have lived without the endless, momentum killing fade to black cuts indicating where the commercials ought to be.

A mad, disfigured composer seeks love with a lovely young opera singer.

The Library of Congress selected this silent era classic for preservation with the National Film Registry in 1998 in consideration of it's aesthetic, historic & cultural significance. Although THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a silent film surviving audio material was incorporated for a re-issue of the box office hit in 1929. That sound version has subsequently been lost although the recordings made at the time of it's 1925 production still exist. This 2nd filmed version of Gaston Leoux's gothic masterpiece incorporated 17 minutes of tinted and color stamped footage into it's mostly B&W runtime. Rupert THE CAT CREEPS Julian directed this lavish horror movie but walked off the set repeatedly after heated altercations with the cast and crew. Only stars Norman Kerry & Lon Chaney got along having become friends on the set of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Mary THE MAN WHO LAUGHS Philbin who played the object of The Phantom's obsession despised Chaney for his clumsy & unwelcome sexual advances. Chaney will be remembered more for his astonishing make up design which helped cement his reputation as 'The Man of a Thousand Faces'. His unmasking in the sewer beneath the Paris Opera House was meme worthy almost a century before there was such a thing! Chaney plays Erik, a disfigured man living beneath a palatial theater while on the run from the police since his escape from Devil's Island. Erik has fooled the innocent singer Christine Daae into believing him to be an Angel of Music destined to guide her career. Under his control, Christine is too afraid to accept the marriage proposals of Raoul de Chagny (Kerry). Since The Phantom became her mentor and muse a series of crimes and tragedies have befallen the opera house attracting the attention of an inspector named Ledoux (Arthur MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM Carewe). Things go from bad to worse when Christine finally agrees to elope with Raoul only to be kidnapped on the eve of her wedding by her disfigured, unrequited love. ESSENTIAL viewing for anyone who truly loves great cinema and for genre addicts especially.

An acid-scarred composer has his dwarf helper bring an opera singer to his London sewer hide-out.

Love Hammer... Love Gaston Leroux's classic novel... Hated THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA which was released on a double bill the less than thrilling pirate adventure CAPTAIN CLEGG. Writer John Elder (aka: Anthony TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA Hinds) claims Cary Grant was up for the part of the Phantom so the screenplay was tailored to his stature as a romantic leading man. I'm assuming Grant took one whiff of the script and got flop sweats leaving the part to the usually reliable Herbert MYSTERIOUS ISLAND Lom. Lom (never the romantic lead) plays a professor of music named Petrie whose work is stolen by the disreputable Lord Ambrose (Michael BIRDS OF PREY Gough) who intends to produce the operas Petrie wrote under his own name at the launch of the theatre he's purchased. Petrie is accidentally disfigured while trying to steal back his printed music and is presumed dead after falling into the river. Instead, his acid-burned body is revived by an unusually tall dwarf (Ian THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS Wilson) who lives in the sewer under the theatre. The 'dwarf' assumes the role of the killer in this watered-down, bastardization of the book leaving the Phantom little to do but pose in a mask. He doesn't even get to lust after or stalk singer Christine Charles (the uncharismatic Heather THE BLACK TORMENT Sears) further de-balling the character. He's certainly no threat to Christine's love interest; stage director Harry Hunter (Edward JULES VERNE'S ROCKET TO THE MOON De Souze) although the dwarf does attempt to kill him but mostly as a favor to The Phantom. Sears and De Souza evaporate under the opulent costumes and sets. Even after seeing THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 3-4 times it's difficult to picture them in my head. To pad the run time the American distributer filmed additional material with two Scotland Yard detectives snooping for clues as if that would help this tedious FLOP which was already super-saturated with unappealing musical numbers thanks to director Terence SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE DEADLY NECKLACE Fisher. Hugely disappointing.

A young soprano becomes the obsession of a horribly disfigured composer, who has plans for those who oppose him or the young singer.

Director: Dwight H. Little | Stars: Robert Englund, Jill Schoelen, Alex Hyde-White, Bill Nighy

Votes: 4,520 | Gross: $3.95M

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was originally slated to be directed by John Hough for the notorious Cannon studio but when they filed for bankruptcy neanderthal producer Menahem Golan took it with him to Cannon's red-headed stepbrother 21st Century Films. Pedestrian director Dwight FREE WILLY 2: THE ADVENTURE HOME Little was hired as was writer Gerry THE MUMMY LIVES! O'Hara for this informal screen adaptation of Gaston Leroux's classic novel whose strongest selling point was the casting of slasher movie icon Robert A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Englund as the disfigured composer. The movie begins in the present as Christine Day (Jill WHEN A STRANGER CALLS BACK Schoelen) auditions for a part in deceased composer Erik Destler's FAUST. During her act the pretty singer collapses on stage and awakens in 19th century England where Destler is still very much alive but living in the sewers beneath a theater under the guise of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. In exchange for fame as a composer Erik sold his soul to the Devil (John Ghavan who may be best known for playing Princess Aura's pet dwarf 'Fellini' in FLASH GORDON) giving up any chance for love in the process. To ensure Erik remains a pariah for all eternity the Devil mutilates his face which was no great shakes to begin with. The Phantom instantly becomes obsessed with Christine & arranges for the death of reigning diva; Carlotta to advance her career. In an interesting bit of casting, the diva was played by singer Stephanie Lawrence who released the album Footlights which was a collection of tunes culled from the the musicals of Andrew Loyd Webber who's re-imagining of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA opened on Broadway 3 years prior. The body count grows as the maniacal killer skins his victims of their faces to wear over his own ruined features ala Leatherface in THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE franchise. Christine's only hope to return to her own time line may be an ineffectual love-interest played by Alex Hyde-White who would go on to star in the notorious Roger Corman bomb THE FANTASTIC FOUR alongside Englund. Menahem Golan invested heavily in this gory pic which faced direct competition from THE PHANTOM OF THE MALL: ERIC'S REVENGE. The movies cancelled each other out on video store rental shelves forcing 21st Century Film Corp to cease production. A proposed sequel THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 2: TERROR IN MANHATTAN never came to pass. Robert Englund's 1992 DANCE MACABRE is said to have been re-written from the unproduced script which probably would have sold if they just called it Freddy of the Opera.

Joel BATMAN AND ROBIN Schumacher directed this eye-popping, 80 million dollar extravaganza based on the Broadway sensation from Andrew Lloyd Webber & the classic French horror novel by Gaston Leroux. Gerard ANGEL HAS FALLEN Butler is to Phantoms what Frank Langella was to Vampires in DRACULA. As a horror icon he's just a tad too swoon-worthy despite the facial disfigurement. Erik's rival for Christine's affections is the handsome nobleman Raoul (Patrick AQUAMAN Wilson). The radiantly lovely Emmy POSEIDON Rossum holds her own against her significantly older male leads as an actress and singer. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA received Oscar nominations for Best original Song, Best Art Direction & Best Cinematography and featured the Tony winning score that has sold millions of copies around the world but was given the cold shoulder by many critics and dismissed by audiences. The chandelier sequence is the most elaborate & spectacular ever imagined. The costumes & set designs are breath-taking and the classic soundtrack gives this classy production instant replay value. Easily the least horrific adaption of the book but it coasts by with a vividly rendered gothic aesthetic. Highly recommended.

MGM's popular matinee idol Nelson KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY Eddy was borrowed by Universal for this ESSENTIAL late entry in the famed classic monsters franchise. His singing voice paired beautifully with co-star Susanna THE CLIMAX Foster which made their numerous operatic interludes a less bitter pill to swallow. As potential lovers, The pair; Anatole Garron & Christine DeBois are striking and magnificent on stage during those sumptuously orchestrated numbers fueled with vivid technicolor. Christine is a rising star at the opera who has been enrolled to study there by a mysterious benefactor. Claude Rains who became a sensation for his unforgettable work as THE INVISIBLE MAN and in THE WOLF MAN was no less widely known for this crowd pleasing, Oscar winning horror hit based on Gaston Leroux's famous novel. Rains plays Christine's sponsor & vocal coach. Before a degenerative nerve disease forced his early resignation as a violinist, Enrique Claudin invested his life's savings into her education. After a disfigurement Claudin uses his fierce reputation as THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA to propel Christine towards stardom. Edgar COBRA WOMAN Barrier joins the cast as Inspector Roaul. He's been sent to investigate a string of crimes at the theater but also finds himself hopelessly in love with the young diva. Enrique/The Phantom displays no lust for his protege and in an earlier draft was written as the singer's long-lost father. That doesn't mean he doesn't get to terrorize everyone else! The chandelier sequence is one of the most thrilling ever committed to film! Frequent FRANCIS THE TALKING MULE contributor Arthur Lubin directed this excellent film which took home Oscars for Best Art Direction & Best Cinematography. The screenplay was from Sam DR. Decades ago, before the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) became the worthless propaganda machine it is today I'd creep downstairs as a child to watch the late show after midnight careful not to wake my parents who were no doubt resting comfortably in separate bedrooms preparing for their traditional duel at dawn. I loved the CBC back then although I wouldn't have it in my house today. They carried Universal monsters & American International Pictures and, of course; Hammer so almost every night you'd find me there with my ear pressed close to the corn-weave speaker staring intently at the black & white screen of our floor model television. Imagine my anticipation upon seeing NIGHT CREATURES listed in the TV Guide. Now imagine my 5 year old heart breaking as a land-locked pirate adventure called CAPTAIN CLEGG aired instead. It wasn't till years later that I realized NIGHT CREATURES & CAPTAIN CLEGG were one in the same. The story goes that Hammer intended to release an adaption of Richard Matheson's classic vampire novel I AM LEGEND under the title NIGHT CREATURES but couldn't secure the rights. Still, the studio was contractually obligated to deliver on their promise to the American distributers. Hammer made this costume drama set in the 18th century based on the dreary Doctor Syn stories by Russell Thorndike which went out of fashion in the 1930s. Disney owned exclusive rights to the character so Hammer changed their protagonist to Captain Clegg & began trying to figure out how to sell it as a horror movie. Peter FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL Cushing was cast as the bootlegging pirate who smuggles his contraband under cover of night by horseback. The smugglers dress themselves & their horses as sketetons to frighten away any curious villagers. That's your NIGHT CREATURES right there... led by a short, prissy 60 year old pirate. I was devastated. A British officer (Patrick WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH Allen) is dispatched to investigate the smuggling ring but is thrown off track by Clegg who resides in the community disguised as a kindly vicar named Reverend Blyss. Even the presence of Yvonne CORRIDORS OF BLOOD Romain & Oliver THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF Reed couldn't cheer me up. This dull period piece is regarded as a classic in some circles but it didn't interest me then & I still resent it a little today. Directed by Peter Graham Scott (who also made the Hardy Boys-esque THE HEADLESS GHOST) based on a script by Barbara PORT OF ESCAPE Harper & Anthony THE LOST CONTINENT Hinds. I'm knocking a star off for giving me a trauma for life and not in the good way one expects from Hammer.

Votes: 493

This would be the final theatrical film for Harry Essex who made a better impression with earlier hits like IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE & THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. It was based on the short story The Dune Roller by Julian May (aka; Judy Ditky) and was adapted previously as a classic episode of the 1950s anthology series TALES OF TOMORROW. Native lore tells of a demon which fell from the sky centuries before which inhabits a lake. Periodically Ouroboros emerges from the depths to consume the living while in the form of a fiery hoop snake rolling after it's victims while in the circular shape of a snake with it's tail tucked inside it's mouth. A scientist investigating the mysterious incineration of local livestock & residents believes Ouroboros is an alien life form based on his discovery of glowing crystals peppered along the basin clearly not of this earth. In his only theatrical appearance Marvin Howard fails to make any kind of impression cast as the heroic lead opposite BLOOD MANIA's Maria de Aragon whose father has himself been studying the ashen remains. The intriguing premise is utterly defeated by hopelessly inadequate special effects, a cast of inexperienced, unknown actors and lackluster direction. A sleep-inducing chore to sit through at only 75 minutes in length.

Cultish film-maker Adam BODY CHEMISTRY II: THE VOICE OF A STRANGER Simon wrote/directed this surprisingly under-rated mockbuster for Roger & Julie Corman's New Horizon studio. CARNOSAUR was based on the 1984 novel of the same name by Harry Adam Knight who's rights the Corman's acquired shortly after Michael Crichton's JURASSIC PARK rocketed to the top of best-seller lists in 1990. Riding on the coat-tails of the firestorm of publicity for Steven Spielberg's hotly anticipated film version, Corman released his better-than-expected knock-off and easily turned a profit despite the howls of major critics including Roger Ebert who named CARNOSAUR the Worst Movie of 1993. In a clever bit of casting, JURASSIC PARK star Laura Dern's mother Diane WILD AT HEART Ladd was cast as rogue geneticist Dr. Tiptree who is determined to bring about the downfall of man by using a virus to re-write the genetic code of women. Not only will the women infected die, on their way out they'll lay an egg containing a dinosaur cloned from the Cretaceous period circa 115 million BC. An anti-environmental security guard named Doc (played by RL militant environmentalist Raphael THE HIDDEN II Sbarge) paid to protect construction materials nearby Tiptree's sinister chicken range becomes suspicious of the scientists work when a baby deinonychus hatches in the back of a poultry truck and begins slaughtering everything in it's voracious path. Tiptree's crowning achievement is the fully grown T-Rex she keeps penned up with laser beams that's fed nosy interlopers like Doc and his tree-hugging girlfriend Thrush (Jennifer SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT 2: THE REVIVAL Runyen). As the military death squads close in to contain the apocalyptic virus the tyrannosaurus escapes captivity and attacks the lovers who fight back using backhoes. The film's climax (set in the town of Climax) will remind viewers either of Sigourney Weaver's duel with the alien queen at the end of ALIENS or 1960s DINOSAURUS! depending on your age although the gags been done numerous times since. The creature effects are terrible despite the nearly 1 million splurged to make CARNOSAUR and you can blame John Carl Buechler who's puppetry is just what you'd expect from the man who gave the world GHOULIES III: GHOULIES GO TO COLLEGE. Some gory human carnage redeems the inferior Jurassic style action somewhat and a morbidly funny script steers this very entertaining pic away from camp. A team of scientists go to a nuclear mining facility to investigate a possible meltdown and instead find a large amount of cloned dinosaurs.

Director: Louis Morneau | Stars: John Savage, Cliff De Young, Don Stroud, Rick Dean

Votes: 2,248

Being that CARNOSAUR was the most profitable film released by New Horizon Roger Corman's decision to produce a sequel was a no-brainer especially with Steven Spielberg's JURASSIC PARK franchise blitzing popular culture on the magnitude of STAR WARS. Michael WATCHERS III Palmer's script is a close copy of ALIENS with a computer hacking teenager (Ryan Thomas Johnson) approximating John Connor from James Cameron's other blockbuster TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY thrown into the mix. What CARNOSAUR II lacks is the army of terrifying aliens to generate scares. The recycled dino props from the 1st (slightly better) pic simply aren't up to the task although to his credit director Louis JOY RIDE 2: DEAD AHEAD Morneau tries his best to make them palatable to audiences who've been used to seeing better starting with 1925s THE LOST WORLD. The action is set two months after the disaster at Climax, Nevada when a clutch of dinosaur eggs hatches inside a nearby uranium enrichment plant in the middle of the desert. A secretive military expert (Cliff SHOCK TREATMENT de Young) leads a hard-boiled team including actors John TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN Savage, Don DJANGO UNCHAINED Stroud, Miguel THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD Nunez, Jr. & Rick SPECIES III Dean into the facility whose nuclear core has been breached by velociraptors. CARNOSAUR II coasts by on the good graces of it's cast and a bevy of action movie cliches until a nicely executed finale where the teenager riding a forklift battles a Tyrannosaurus Rex. I didn't hate it although some may given it's dearth of bloodshed. Followed by CARNOSAUR III: PRIMAL SPECIES.

52. Carnosaur 3: Primal Species (1996)

R | 85 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

International terrorists get a surprise when their cargo turns out to contain living dinosaurs. The army commando team now have to think fast, if they want to prevent the extinction of the human species, instead of the reptiles.

Director: Jonathan Winfrey | Stars: Rob Camilletti, Stephen Lee, Cyril O'Reilly, Scott Valentine

Votes: 2,066

Terrorists attack an army transport to get their hands on a shipment of uranium but accidentally set loose the last surviving velociraptors & an asexual Tyrannosaurus rex capable of producing as many as 12 eggs during it's genetically accelerated reproductive cycle. When the mutilated bodies of the terrorists are discovered, an anti-terrorist group led by Col. Higgins (Scott BLACK SCORPION Valentine) is called in to secure the area & retrieve the specimens who Dr. Hodges (Janet THE QUEST Gunn) believes may benefit mankind. Rick Dean returns to the franchise but in a different role than he played in CARNOSAUR II. He's a soldier this time under Higgin's command. Former teen heart-throb Valentine is awful wearing a rubbery scowl & barking military jargon like he's Sylvester Stallone. The dinosaur props from the earlier Roger Corman produced flicks are back for their least convincing appearance yet. Jonathan BLACK SCORPION II: AFTERSHOCK Winfrey doesn't seem to even be trying to make the monsters scary and the cast seems lost. Despite being the bloodiest entry in the trilogy and having the highest body count CARNOSAUR 3: PRIMAL SPECIES is dull, unconvincing & humourless. Scott ADDAMS FAMILY REUNION Sandin & Rob CAGED HEAT II: STRIPPED OF FREEDOM Kerchner wrote this best forgotten direct-to-video sequel which was followed by the even worse RAPTOR in 2001.

In a remote military outpost in the 19th century, Captain John Boyd and his regiment embark on a rescue mission which takes a dark turn when they are ambushed by a sadistic cannibal.

Director: Antonia Bird | Stars: Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, David Arquette, Jeremy Davies

Votes: 43,263 | Gross: $2.06M

RAVENOUS is my 2nd favorite comedy about cannibalism after EATING RAOUL and has developed a small cult of admirers who appreciate their guilty pleasures jet black. It may have found a larger 2nd life as a cult classic if not for the casting of convicted child sex predator Jeffrey DEADWOOD Jones in a featured role. Guy THE ADVENTURES OF PRICILLA: QUEEN OF THE DESERT Pearce plays a soldier in the American army (circa 1850) who's banished to a remote outpost because of his cowardice. Other soldiers there include a drug addict (David SCREAM 4 Arquette), Jones as Colonel Hart, Neil McDonough as a private named Reich, etc. A stranger wanders into their fort half delirious & half dead claiming to have survived being stranded in the wilderness by consuming the flesh of settlers who perished under the command of Colonel Ives. Despite being short-staffed by a scouting mission, Boyd (Pearce) and the others accompany Colqhoun (Robert 28 WEEKS LATER Carlyle) back to the cave to check for survivors. Once there, it becomes clear that Colqhoun slaughtered everyone in his wagon train & intends to do the same to them. The soldiers are easy prey for their superhuman & utterly deranged attacker with Boyd barely escaping with his life but certain to die from exposure with his leg broken. With no other option Boyd eats his fallen comrade Reich ignoring the curse of the Wendigo which was told by the Native American Indian servants back at the fort. According to legend, the consumption of human flesh transforms the cannibal into a Wendigo with an insatiable hunger for more. Healing rapidly, Boyd returns to the base only to find Colqhoun in charge having assumed the identity of Colonel Ives and that Hart is in cahoots with the cannibal having somehow survived the ambush at the cave. The traitors imprison Boyd who now understands that devouring human flesh accelerates healing, enhances strength & cunning and that if he wishes to live he must give in to his RAVENOUS appetite. Original director Milcho Manchevski was fired by Fox Studio execs & replaced with Antonia PRIEST Bird who complained of constant interference on the set & drastic editorial decisions which left the movie damaged beyond repair. The contemporary flavor RAVENOUS carries with it clashes against the period setting. Ted OCEANS 11 Griffin's screenplay may be set in the old west but the actors (all of whom were good...even Arquette!) never sold me on the concept. RAVENOUS doesn't work especially well as a horror movie, western or a black comedy and BOMBED spectacularly recouping only about 2 million on a 12 million dollar budget but it's so niche it almost becomes a genre unto itself and that's what makes it special. I liked this anomaly a lot more than most.

A United States Navy destroyer escort participates in a Navy "invisibility" experiment that inadvertently sends two sailors forty years into the future.

Director: Stewart Raffill | Stars: Michael Paré, Nancy Allen, Eric Christmas, Bobby Di Cicco

Votes: 16,759 | Gross: $8.10M

Roger Corman's New World Pictures distributed this nifty sci-fi pic based on the persistent conspiracy theory that the US military briefly teleported the destroyer USS Eldridge into another dimension while experimenting with invisibility back in 1943. More specifically the film was based on the novel The Philadelphia Experiment: Project Invisibility by Charles Berlitz & Bill Moore who made a living spinning tales of Atlantis, UFOs and The Bermuda Triangle. Genre darling John Carpenter initially developed a script with the intent to direct but jumped ship to make ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK instead serving only as a hand's off executive producer with Stuart MANNEQUIN 2: ON THE MOVE Raffill slated to direct based on an extensively re-written screenplay from a number of sources including William Gray who had a string of hits back-in-the-day including PROM NIGHT and THE CHANGELING. During the experiment, two sailors aboard the Eldridge abandon ship as electro-magnetic energy envelopes the vessel while it shifts into another dimension. David (Michael EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS II: EDDIE LIVES! Pare) & shipmate Jim (Bobby GHOULIES IV Di Cicco) are catapulted into the mid eighties where they become fugitives hunted by the army and must rely on the lovely Nancy CHILDREN OF THE CORN 666: ISAAC'S RETURN Allen to help them find a way back in time before the planet is destroyed. It seems the experiment Dr. Longstreet (Eric ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES! Christmas) began in 1943 continued in 1984 thereby creating a singularity in space/time that only David can dis-spell. THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT wasn't a huge hit & was rushed onto video store shelves & network TV where it eventually built a solid reputation. A direct-to-video sequel followed in 1993 & a TV movie remake in 2012 which also starred Pare.

PG-13 | 97 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

In the sci-fi thriller The Philadelphia Experiment the sole survivor of a wartime experiment is catapulted 41 years into the future and must race to save the world as we know it. It's now 10 years later--1993.

Director: Stephen Cornwell | Stars: Brad Johnson, Marjean Holden, Gerrit Graham, John Christian Graas

Votes: 2,234 | Gross: $0.00M

Stephen KILLING STREETS Cornwell directed this belated direct-to-video sequel to the fondly remembered sci-fi pic THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT. Handsome, rugged Brad SUPERGATOR Johnson (filling in for Michael Pare) plays David Herdeg who chose to remain in 1984 after saving the world from a rift in the space/time continuum opened when Dr. Longstreet attempted to make the USS Eldridge invisible 40 years before. Longstreet (James THE DAYS AND NIGHTS OF MOLLY DODD Greene) has continued to work with David whose DNA has been altered by time travel. The former soldier has been experiencing seizures & discovers Longstreet has been working with an aggressive scientist named Mailer (Gerrit CHUD II: BUD THE CHUD Graham) incorporating theories his father was trying to perfect for the Nazi's during WWII. When Mailer teleports a stealth bomber with a nuclear payload a new singularity is created tied to his father's work. Because of his unique blood David is once again hurtled into the vortex to emerge in an alternate reality 1993 where the Nazis won the war. And why did they win the war? Because Dr. Mailer's stealth bomber fell back in time & landed in the hands of Dr. Mahler (also played by Graham) who used it to nuke Washington. To make things right, David must find a way to go back to 1943 to destroy the plane before it can be deployed. Mailer also wants to make the trip but needs David's blood to get there and doesn't care how much is spilled. Marjean GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE 2 Holden co-stars as a member of the resistance who enlists David to overthrow the New World Order. Writers Wallace Bennett & Don Jacoby retconned the events of the 1st movie to try to make the stuff in the sequel make sense. It never does. PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT II is riddled with contrivances & the low end special effects don't make much of an impression. Below average.

When two young members of feuding families meet, forbidden love ensues.

Director: Franco Zeffirelli | Stars: Leonard Whiting, Olivia Hussey, John McEnery, Milo O'Shea

Franco ENDLESS LOVE Zefferelli's ROMEO AND JULIET was the first screen adaption of William Shakespeare's plays that I saw and it remains my favorite to this day. The all-time-beloved tragedy begins in the town of Verona in the late 16th century where an impetuous & passionate boy of 15 named Romeo (Leonard THE LEGEND OF YOUNG DICK TURPIN Whiting) Montague crashes a masquerade ball held by the Capulets who are his family's sworn enemies. There, he meets the lovely 13 year old daughter of Lord & Lady Capulet; Juliet (Olivia PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINNING Hussey) and falls madly in love as does she. Later that night the pair swear their undying love and plan to be secretly wed. They do marry with the help of a well-meaning Friar (Milo THEATRE OF BLOOD O'Shea) and a nurse played by Pat TOO MUCH MONKEY BUSINESS Heywood. When hot-headed Tybalt (Michael THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU York) learns that Romeo dared step foot into his ancestral home he demands a duel to address the dishonor. Romeo cannot reveal that he and Juliet are wed knowing it could spark an all-out-war between the families so refuses to accept. Romeo's best friend Mercutio (John TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES McEnery) accepts on his behalf and is mortally wounded in the duel. In a rage Romeo does take up his sword and stabs Tybalt to death bringing down upon both houses the wrath of the Prince of Verona (Robert THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES Stephens) who banishes the boy from the land under penalty of death should he return. Heartbroken at the thought of being apart for even a day Juliet consummates her marriage while her parents (Paul JULIUS CEASAR Hardwick & Natasha THE TRAGEDY OF HAMLET Parry) quickly plan to marry her off to Count Paris (Robert LA CAGE AUX FOLLES II Biasco). The friar once again intercedes on behalf of the young lovers concocting a plan and a potion designed to place Juliet into a death-like sleep in the hopes that when she awakens she may be reunited with Romeo however the course of true love never did run smooth, as you may have heard. ROMEO AND JULIET was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director and won Oscars for Best Cinematography & Best Costume design. The leads were catapulted briefly into international stardom because of their sensational chemistry together. In her autobiography Hussey stated director Zefferelli (who was pushing 50) became infatuated with her on the set while he agreed that the 15 year old starlet was the unrequited love of his life. Bruce Robinson who played Benuolio in the film revealed he was the one who refused to put out to the director despite dozens of unwelcome advances. In 2018 Johnathon Schaech alleged Zefferelli sexually assaulted him on the set of their 1993 film SPARROW. The director who was 95 and on his deathbed denied the claim. There's been a push of late to ban the bard from schools and libraries with many citing the age of the kids as problematic to modern audiences. I don't know about the loveless, book-burning animals but as I recall, I was once in love at the age of 13 like everyone else. They need to go away not this ESSENTIAL adaptation of what many consider to be Shakespeare's finest work. Listen for an uncredited Sir Lawrence OTHELLO Olivier as narrator in the American print.

INVASION OF THE NEPTUNE MEN was an imaginative, B&W sci-fi movie from the famed Toei Company in Japan. Handsome Sonny KILL BILL VOL. 1 Chiba starred as the tightly panted superhero Space Chief. When not battling aliens he's an astronomer who doubles as a kind of Boy Scout leader for a gaggle of hyper-enthusiastic kids who invariably find themselves in need of rescue when space ships from Neptune arrive to conquer the world. The special effects are fabulously inventive compared to THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN episodes I grew up watching. In 1997 that mystery science thing I never liked introduced it to a new generation of older viewers who treated it with contempt. While I agree it's not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination I would have loved it as a kid just I loved GAMERA movies or JOHNNY SOCKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT. Some times you've got to open your heart a little and remember what it was like to be a kid when reviewing these vintage entertainments.

The Asylum produced this rock bottom mockbuster of ALIEN VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM which was released to video about a week before the real deal hit theaters. Former THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO actor William Katt landed this rare starring role alongside decades younger Whittly TITANIC II Jourdan & Dedee JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH Pfeiffer as a group of friends drawn into a galactic feud between a murderous monster who crash landed on their world and a heavily and fakely armored futuristic warrior sent to hunt it down. The monster is a kind of centaur with the torso of a praying mantis and the body of a big ass spider who chases the locals thru the countryside. The ending which reveals the Hunter to be a human sent from earth is a bit of oddness that just makes everything worse. Written by David WAR OF THE WORLDS 2: THE NEXT WAVE Michael Latt & directed by special effects whiz Scott SUPERCROC Harper whose final picture this would be. The only reason I didn't give this DOG the DOG rating it deserves is the presence of the still slightly charismatic Katt who's probably just as happy that he's still working as I am.

Roger Corman produced this DOG through his New Horizon pictures with Josh SHARKZILLA Blush & Jim COBRAGATOR Wynorski assigned to direct the new, wrap-around footage under the pseudonym Jay Andrews. Corben TIDAL WAVE: NO ESCAPE Bernen (replacing Diane Ladd) plays the head of the Eunice chicken ranch slash nuclear facility & Eric AMITYVILLE DEATH HOUSE Roberts plays the sheriff who stumbles onto the secret military project Jurassic Storm about the same time a squad is sent to clean up the mess. Speaking of mess, the worthless new material was written by Frances AVALANCHE Doel & Michael SHE-FREAK Druxman. RAPTOR isn't so much as a spin-off or sequel to CARNOSAUR so much as it's a 'best of' clipfest ala GAMERA: SUPER MONSTER or PUPPET MASTER: THE LEGACY. The hopelessly out-dated special effects from earlier movies in the low-budget franchise are recycled as is the music in this direct-to-TV slop-bucket which even steals the poster art for CARNOSAUR II to promote itself. Followed by THE EDEN FORMULA in 2006. Avoid at all cost!

Helping himself to the original dinosaur puppets & props he himself designed for the cultish 1993 hit CARNOSAUR writer/director John GHOULIES III: GHOULIES GO TO COLLEGE Carl Buechler sets about to manufacture a direct-to-television rip off of both JURASSIC PARK and DIE HARD. It's an ambitious concept this DOG fails entirely to deliver. Buechler has a few cheaply dressed office sets & a parking lot doubling for an L.A. office tower & recycled stock footage of dinosaur puppets to float the boat which immediately went glub glub glub. I liked exactly 2 things about THE EDEN FORMULA. The opening credits reminded me of 1984's SUPERGIRL (and if you can know what I'm talking about you are truly a magnetar in the universe of useless trivia) and the nifty B-movie cast. Tony TALES FROM THE HOOD 3 Todd seems to be having the most fun as a ruthless terrorist who disables the security system of a bio-engineering lab in order to steal a cloning re-agent. By doing so he sets loose a pitiful T-Rex mockup fans of the unpopular franchise have seen far to many times before. The cliches we're subjected to have been kicking around since before Betty got her Boop and speaking of O-A-F!; Dee 3 FROM HELL Wallace & dad bodied Jeff EASY RIDER 2: THE RIDE HOME Fahey co-star as the scientists who created beast. A pall of bitter disappointment hangs over this terrible sequel that prevents it from being fun. In an age of CG wonders which routinely dazzle the mind there's no reason for something like THE EDEN FORMULA to exist. It's an embarrassment to all concerned.

AGROUND was filmed by the Italians for 1965s THE DICTATOR'S GUNS if you're in the mood for a unique double feature experience. DEAD CALM stars Nicole THE INVASION Kidman & Sam EVENT HORIZON Neill as Rae & John Ingram who go for a sabbatical on board their yacht after the tragic death of their young son. From out of nowhere a hysterical man (Billy THE PHANTOM Zane) boards their craft claiming to have survived a food poisoning while staying with friends. While John investigates the claim he learns that Hughie is a certified nut who butchered his crew mates during a schizophrenic episode and that the boat is slowly sinking to destroy the evidence. Meanwhile, Rae catches on quick that Houghie is paranoid & dangerously delusional. To regain control of the vessel to save her stranded husband from certain death she must navigate the unpredictable labyrinth of his broken mind. The lead actors are uniformly excellent and this Australian horror movie heralded in their stardom. Phillip SLIVER Noyce directed this white knuckle thriller based on on a lean & mean script by Terry THE ROAD WARRIOR Hayes.

A smartly cast Laurence HANNIBAL Fishburne stars as the strong-willed Captain Miller who leads the crew of the Lewis and Clark on a rescue mission when a distress signal is received from the interstellar spacecraft The Event Horizon which has mysteriously reappeared in a decaying orbit around Neptune. Along for the ride is a scientist named Dr. Weir who designed the warp drive for the spaceship which utilizes the power of a black hole to fold the space time continuum. If it sounds like I'm talking out of my ass blame screen writer Philip FIRESTARTER 2: REKINDLED Eisner who not only saddled EVENT HORIZON with quantum physics junk science but loaded it with Biblical doomsday porn to fashion this over-produced ALIEN/HELLRAISER hybrid to the tune of 60 million for director Paul ALIEN VS PREDATOR Anderson. The black hole warp drive hurtled the ship into another Hellish dimension where the possessed crew tore themselves to pieces in an orgy of mutilation. The final distress call sent by the doomed team stated clearly (in Latin): 'Save yourselves from Hell!' but someone mistook it for 'Help!' and now there's an entire rescue team stranded aboard a cathedral-like, gothic spaceship that's been possessed by the Devil. I'm giving EVENT HORIZON an extra star for those amazing set designs and the special effects work and art direction which is brilliant. Every penny of it's bloated budget is onscreen and you will be impressed. The story gets even more B-movie cheesy as it's respectable cast is picked off by the demon which inhabits the body of Dr Weir. Sam THE FINAL CONFLICT: OMEN III Neill is rather fun channeling 'Pinhead' but it's an awkwardly developed plot point that never quite works & contrasts badly with the state-of-the-art special effects. Test screenings led the studio to drastically cut Anderson's original 130 minute version down to 96 minutes with the gorier footage left on the editing room floor. EVENT HORIZON bombed spectacularly but has gathered a sizable & fiercely devoted cult of admirers over the years prompting recent rumors that a TV mini-series reboot is on the way from Amazon & Paramount for release in 2022.

When I saw this in theatre more than half the audience walked out 20 minutes into this ugly stump-humper & the few who stayed appeared to be napping or laughing quietly at the sad spectacle unfolding onscreen. Notorious Chinese schlock-master Godfrey ROBO VAMPIRE Ho directed this blood-soaked, profanity-laced kiddie oriented kaiju about a violent gang of terrorists who track a mysterious growth serum to the home of a little girl with the voice of a car alarm. The dubbing is terrible but her shrill delivery is a a solid strike against THUNDER OF GIGANTIC SERPENT. The cruel villain lights up a smoke right in front of her without so much as cracking a window! Total bad-ass. He slaps her around too! In all fairness, so does the cop sent to rescue her & retrieve the formula. She started in with that voice and he popped her. While the majority of the story line focuses on the plight of the kidnapped child there's a non-sequitur action-movie sub-plot about a mercenary named "Fast' played by frequent Ho collaborator Pierre AMERICAN COMMANDO 3: SAVAGE TEMPTATION Kirby. The kaiju action is very poorly presented even for something that sat on the shelf for nearly a decade. There's only a few seconds of footage towards the end where the behemoth boa looks awesome. And there's only a few minutes of footage where the monster is large enough to rampage. Most of it's time is spent in the girl's bedroom or playing volley ball on the beach. George CRACKDOWN MISSION Chu provided the screenplay which runs the gambit between bizarre & banal and Richard Band provided the soundtrack which was stolen from THE RE-ANIMATOR.

The disreputable Victor POWDER Salva wrote/directed this respectable horror hit about a likable pair of siblings who encounter a bat-like demon while on a road trip to spring break. The effortlessly charismatic Justin LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD Long & the very attractive Gina DEADLY INVASION: THE KILLER BEES NIGHTMARE Philips share a natural rapport that carries JEEPERS CREEPERS further than you'd expect. The monster stalking them is hard to define. A psychic (Patricia LAWNMOWER MAN 2: BEYOND CYBERSPACE Belcher) warns the kids that the creeper is an ancient evil that is free to feed every 23rd spring for 23 days. It eats people to harvest their organs and whatever biological material it requires to maintain it's super-human form. The monster which borrows elements of Freddy Kruger, Leatherface, the Alien Face-Hugger & the Predator is undeniably scary whether in flight or behind the wheels of a truck that looks like it rode out of a car lot in Hell. Eileen THE LAST PICTURE SHOW Brennan adds to the fun in a memorable supporting role as a cat-lady who doesn't take crap from bat-men. The gruesome FX are effective and overall I was pleasantly surprised by this Francis Ford Coppola production. I figured out Victor Salva was a predator when the Disney produced EDWARD SCISSORHANDS clone POWDER hit video stores. Later I heard the director spent a year in jail for having sex with a 12 year old actor he met on the set of CLOWNHOUSE but anyone who saw POWDER could figure out the man was a first class creep. His camera followed the young male cast's crotches like he was shooting gay porn. To his credit Salva keeps it classy with JEEPERS CREEPERS 2. Even though he's scripted a sequel about a high school basketball team attacked by a demonic man-bat the actors aren't being overtly sexually exploited as they've been in earlier Salva pics (especially CLOWNHOUSE!). The team-mates are stranded on a deserted stretch of country road where they become easy prey for a hell-spawned bat monstrosity that seems impervious to destruction. In a gimmicky cameo, Justin DRAG ME TO HELL Long's character returns as a spirit who warns a psychic cheerleader (Nicki JOY RIDE 2: DEAD AHEAD Aycox) that the creeper is a demon who emerges from hibernation every 23rd spring for 23 days to replenish it's supply of human flesh & harvest whatever organs it requires to sustain it's super-human form. Ray TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME Wise stars as a farmer named Taggart who lost his own son on the creeper's 22nd day of feeding. Armed with a home-made harpoon gun the slightly over-the-top actor may be the high school kids only hope of surviving the night. The higher body count keeps the clock ticking on this okay slasher movie but it's not as scary as the 1st pic which had a pair of well drawn characters in the lead. The alpha male in JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 is Wise's farmer Taggart who is too cartoonish to effectively sell the horror and the special effects department over-compensates by churning out more gore than would be necessary if the writing was stronger. Above average despite itself. Followed by JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 in 2017.

Blood-thirsty 'me too' spokesperson Rose McGowan didn't have any problem working with him for 2011's ROSEWOOD LANE. Guess he's done his time. JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 is set in the days between the end of the 1st movie & the start of the second. An old woman named Gaylen Brandon (Meg OBLIVION 2: BACKLASH Foster) receives a visitation from her husband who died 23 years before. The spirit is tied to the bat-demon because it consumed him. He warns her that the creeper is looking for a hand severed in a fight decades ago that's hidden on their farm. Gaylen retrieves the still-living claw & shares a powerful telepathic link with the monster for a moment. With the lives of her children and grand children in danger Gaylen summons everyone in town who's lost a loved one to the demon to come together to face it down. Stan CUTTHROAT ISLAND Shaw lost his own father to the ancient beast and leads the offensive while a handful of teens are trapped in the rolling butcher shop on wheels the creeper uses as a truck. The special effects aren't as vividly rendered and filming the creeper in the bright light of day was not a good idea. Original JEEPERS CREEPERS actress Gina DEADLY INVASTION: THE KILLER BEES NIGHTMARE Philip pops up briefly towards the end credits suggesting what fans had in store for part 4 however JEEPERS CREEPERS: REBORN went into production without participation from either Silva or Philips. JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 was given a limited theatrical release before debuting on the SyFy network.

68. Carnivore (2000)

R | 80 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

A government experiment goes totally wrong as a creature confined in a hidden lab inside an abandoned house escapes. Afterwards, some teens show up to have a little fun in the house, not knowing that the beast is loose and watching them.

Directors: Joseph Kurtz, Kenneth Mader | Stars: Steven Walker, Jack Solem, J. Douglas Martner, Michael Hogan

Votes: 647

CARNIVORE was a micro-budget indie horror pic shot in the late 1980s by writer/director Joseph Kurtz that simply ran out of cash before the project could be completed. More than a decade later the existing footage was augmented with some additional scenes filmed by the relatively unknown Ken Mader & released to the unsuspecting home video market. A group of twenty-something 'teens' who look like they escaped from an Olivia Newton John music video agree to spend the night in a haunted house unaware a new species cloned in the basement lab has escaped and prowls the hallways in search of human blood. The CARNIVORE looks like one of the GHOULIES only larger and isn't the least bit frightening.

Former WCW wrestler Vanessa READY TO RUMBLE Sanchez plays a Tarot card reader with expertise in the field of Voodoo assisting L.A. police track what she believes to be a Haitian demon decapitating people to reconstitute human form. Low budget director Matt A ZOMBIE INVASION Green and his writer/producer wife Gina completely missed the mark. Every aspect of this direct-to-video dud is substandard right down to the lighting and audio both of which are murky. The special effects consist mostly of headless mannequins but they manage to steal every scene they're in from the living cast. It reminded me a lot of the 1979 John 'Bud' Cardos pic THE DARK but never in a good way.

A carnivorous breed of African cockroach infest the island and begin killing the locals including John CARNIVALE Savage & Dean BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Stockwell forcing the doctor to deal with the threat and the increasingly hostile population. Ellory EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS Elkayem directed this okay tv movie based on a script from John ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID Chaflin. CREEPY CRAWLERS (aka: THEY NEST) is competently made, reasonably well produced (especially the FX work) & above average for the genre.

Annik BLOOD ORGY OF THE SHE-DEVILS Borel is terrific as a young woman named Daniela who was traumatized by rape as a child. In a plot devise that predates George Romero's MARTIN our heroine believes herself to be a supernatural being. MARTIN believed he was nosferatu whereas Daniela is convinced she carries the curse of lycanthropy. It seems her ancestor Elaina (Dagmar THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY Lassander) was a werewolf and since every man she beds winds up with his throat torn out she probably inherited the gene. A police inspector (Frederick OSS 117: MISSION FOR A KILLER Stafford) follows the trail of naked, mutilated men to the home of the former mental patient who has finally fallen in love. Howard FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON Ross plays the hunky love interest who's in for one hell of a surprise with armed police on their way, a gang of murderous rapists at the door and the full moon on the rise! WEREWOLF WOMAN is pure, unadulterated, grindhouse-rough Euro-trash from exploitation film-maker Rino WOMEN OF CELL BLOCK 7 Silvestro. The sex and sexual violence is stark and raw and erotic. At times I felt this slightly surreal cult classic could have been directed by Quentin Tarantino. This is authentic grindhouse cinema at it's most pungent and powerful. WEREWOLF WOMAN makes no apologies and pulls no punches. It deserves a much wider audience than it currently enjoys.

72. Martin (1977)

R | 95 min | Drama, Horror

68 Metascore

A young man, who believes himself to be a vampire, goes to live with his elderly and hostile cousin in a Pennsylvania small town where he tries to redeem his blood-craving urges.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: John Amplas, Lincoln Maazel, Christine Forrest, Elyane Nadeau

Votes: 12,609 | Gross: $0.10M

John MIDNIGHT Amplas made his film debut in this genuine cult classic from director George KNIGHTRIDERS Romero who attempted to hit the refresh button on vampire lore just as his NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD became ground zero for a new breed of zombie on film. Amplas plays what appears to be a socially awkward late teen who who claims to be an 84 year old vampire sent from Eastern Europe to live with his cruel great uncle Cuda in the states. Lincoln THE AMUSEMENT PARK Maazel is the religious zealot tasked with providing room and board to the Nosferatu as a debt to his family but vows tp drive a wooden stake through MARTIN's heart if so much as one person from their neighborhood is found drained of blood. MARTIN who has been plagued with surreal B&W memories of his Transylvanian roots mocks his elderly host for his pagan superstitions & Christian faith while eliciting support from Cuda's daughter (Christine MONKRY SHINES Forrest) who believes her cousin could benefit more from psychiatric treatment than the exorcisms her father has booked. By day MARTIN works in his host's butcher shop but by night he stalks women armed with syringes filled with powerful sedatives and razor blades to acquire the blood he needs to survive. But a vampire cannot live on blood alone. MARTIN needs to feel love and share consensual sex. He finds both in the arms of an unhappily married middle aged woman he delivers meat to. (< See what I did there?). While their union may seem like a blessed relief to the Nosferatu who has spent decades as a lonely pariah his mortal lover's own fascination with razor blades may prove to be their undoing. This fine character study is peppered with graphic scenes of exploitation and violence. Famed make up artist Tom CREEPSHOW Savini provided the blood & gore for this under-appreciated gem which was recut for European distribution by Dario Argento as WAMPYR and given a new soundtrack courtesy of Goblin.

Breck THE LAST WITCH HUNTER Eisner directed this slickly produced remake of the 1973 cult classic CODENAME: TRIXIE (aka: THE CRAZIES) by George A. Romero based on a superior re-imagining of the script by Roy PULSE Wright & Scott THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Kosar. THE CRAZIES is everything I love about successful remakes. It's a better film that pays respect to the original while taking full advantage of the advances in film-making. The language of film has changed in the decades since Romero's pic and director Eisner speaks that language fast, loud and with authority. Four adult friends make a desperate break for freedom when the residents of their Iowa town becomes infected with a government bio-weapon that transforms them into violent psychopaths. Death squads are sent to eliminate any witnesses & potential carriers while the government considers the use of nuclear containment to halt the spread of the apocalyptic disease. Timothy ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD Olyphant, Radha SILENT HILL: REVELATION Mitchell, Joe HANNIBAL Anderson & Danielle THE FLASH Panabaker are so appealing and smartly written you'll be rooting for them every step of the way. You may have seen this story done before dozens of times but it's rarely been told with this much skill and finesse.

A quadriplegic man has a trained monkey help him with his paralysis, until the little monkey begins to develop feelings, and rage, against its new master.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: Jason Beghe, John Pankow, Kate McNeil, Joyce Van Patten

Votes: 13,034 | Gross: $5.34M

Popular actor Jason CHICAGO P.D. Beghe stars as an athletic young man left quadriplegic after a terrible accident. Hoping to ease the growing tensions between Allan and his girlfriend (Kate THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW McNeil) a bio-chemist offers his paralyzed friend the use of a small, Capuchin monkey as a service animal. The scientist is also using his trained monkey as a test subject to increase her intelligence using extracts from human brain tissue. Ella appears to be a godsend but as her brain slowly evolves she becomes obsessed with her human companion and a clever danger to anyone she considers a threat. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD director George A. Romero adapted Michael Stewart's forgettable novel to the screen with an ample budget and a capable cast but is utterly defeated by a tiny adorable monkey named Boo cast as a service pet. Put a straight razor in her hand and she just gets cuter! In addition to the 'monster' not being scary, neither is the movie. Three quarters of it's run time is spent setting up mildly absorbing finale. A nice supporting cast consisting of Stephen PUSHING DAISIES Root, Stanley FEUD Tucci & Romero favorite Christine MARTIN Forrest elevates the lackluster material somewhat. It's not terrible but it's unsatisfying & vaguely disappointing. Also, the cheesy, tacked on 'trick' ending feels like it's from a different movie.

76. Bloodline (1979)

R | 116 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

When her father is murdered, a pharmaceutical heiress becomes the next target of an unknown killer amid the international jet set.

Director: Terence Young | Stars: Audrey Hepburn, Ben Gazzara, James Mason, Claudia Mori

Votes: 1,916

Despite the catastrophic failure of 1977's THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT in theaters Sidney Sheldon's even more tawdry BLOODLINE was at the top of best-seller lists around the world and Paramount decided to roll the dice on this multi-million dollar, A-List pot-boiler. The unimaginably miscast Audrey MY FAIR LADY Hepburn stars as the jet-setting daughter of a manufacturing tycoon who must assume control of the family business when his corpse is discovered in Switzerland. An interpol agent named Hornung (Gert THE 1000 EYES OF DR. MABUSE Frobe) believes Sam Roffe's murder is connected to an international conspiracy to make snuff films and there's a plot to have Elizabeth raped and strangled in the next one so the company can be sold. A stellar cast falls under the watchful eye of Inspector Hornung including Michelle THE USERS Phillips, Ben PEOPLE LIKE US Gazzara, Claudia URSUS IN THE LAND OF FIRE Mori, James SALEM'S LOT Mason and Omar MEMORIES OF MIDNIGHT Sharif any of whom could be responsible for the attempts being made on the heiress's life. Director Terence Young worked with Hepburn on the suspense classic WAIT UNTIL DARK but that was when the beautiful actress was in her 30s. At 50 she was simply too god-damned old to be playing the helpless ingenue and as an actress of considerable prestige should never have agreed to appear in this lurid trash. Laird THE LITTLE GIRL WHO LIVES DOWN THE LANE Koenig dutifully translated the book for the screen but the end result was alternately unintentionally funny or unintentionally awful. This hyperventilating DOG bombed but became a ratings hit when aired on ABC with an additional 40 minutes of excruciating footage tagged on to fill a 3 hour time slot.

After the murder of his daughter; Dominique POLTERGEIST Dunne her father devoted the remainder of his life as a journalist, activist & author to exposing injustice and in particular revealing how the elite get away with murder. Dominick Dunne's sensational best-seller THE TWO MRS. GRENVILLES was a follow-up to THE WINNERS: PART II OF JOYCE HABER'S THE USERS and was based on the RL murder trial of former show girl Ann Eden Woodward who was accused of killing her wealthy husband in 1955. Derek MURDER. SHE WROTE: SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST Marlowe adapted the book for this 2 part mini-series for NBC and director John ROOTS Erman. Making her 1st film appearance in 25 years Hollywood legend Claudette IMITATION OF LIFE Colbert won a Golden Globe for her chilling performance as the powerful matriarch of the Grenville family. Alice Grenville is horrified when her spoiled & hot headed son Billy (Stephen 7TH HEAVEN Collins) arrives with a burlesque performer as his new bride. Did I say Alice was chilling? Actually ice-cold describes the reception she gives Ann MAGIC Margaret's Ann Arden Grenville upon her unwelcome arrival. Ann challenges her authority, threatens Alice's relationship with Billy and invites scandal and disgrace to the proud family name. THE TWO MRS. GRENVILLES circle one another like cobras as Ann's marriage becomes increasingly volatile. One night the abusive playboy is shot to death by his unhappily married wife who claims she mistook him for a burglar but Alice knows the truth. Her son was the victim of cold-blooded murder but to bring his killer to justice she must reveal family secrets she'd rather keep hidden. The actors are terrific with each scoring a nomination for Best Actor/Actress in their respective categories. DYNASTY's Nolan Miller received a nomination for Best Costume Design with the movie going on to win for Best Hair Design & Best Art Direction. The other Emmy nominations THE TWO MRS. GRENVILLE earned were for Best Sound Editing and Best Mini-Series. Highly recommended.

Film version of Jacqueline Susann's best-selling novel chronicling the rise and fall of three young women in show business.

Director: Mark Robson | Stars: Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, Paul Burke, Sharon Tate

Votes: 9,750 | Gross: $44.43M

Jacqueline Susann's VALLEY OF THE DOLLS became a pop culture sensation in print selling an astonishing 31 million copies worldwide thanks to it's frank handling of sexuality and the strength of it's three central characters who embark as friends to find their fortune in Hollywood. Susann (who has a cameo in the filmed adaptation) described VALLEY OF THE DOLLS as a "piece of shit" and blamed director Mark Robson who received accolades a decade before for the melodramatic masterpiece; PEYTON PLACE. Barbara PEYTON PLACE:THE NEXT GENERATION Perkins led the cast as Anne Welles who is lured into the movie industry by the promise of romance from studio attorney Lyon Burke (Paul FRANCIS GOES TO WASHINGTON Burke) but is nearly destroyed by her addiction to prescription barbiturates. In an earth-shatteringly campy performance Patty LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY'S BABY Duke plays Anne's best friend Neely O'Hare; a scrappy young actress who's rise to fame was peppered with scandals including a faux marriage to a gay fashion designer (Alexander PARANOIAC Davion) & a divine feud with box office war-horse Helen Lawson (Susan I'LL CRY TOMORROW Hayward). Her decent into the VALLEY OF THE DOLLS was thanks to sleeping pills, mental illness & alcoholism. Duke's contribution to this cult classic DOG is every bit as magnificent as Faye Dunaway's legendary turn as Joan Crawford in MOMMIE DEAREST. Judy THE WIZARD OF OZ Garlard was originally hired to play the cat-fighting Helen Lawson but was fired early on due to her own addiction to booze and Demerol. Hayward & Duke are wonderfully bitchy & reportedly hated one another in real life. Finally, the iconic beauty Sharon THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS Tate played the serious-minded actress Jennifer North who ever only got to make French 'nudies' before a devastating double mastectomy robbed her of even that. Jennifer turns to drugs to help escape the pressure of having a terminally ill, retarded husband and a back-alley abortion to terminate the brain-damaged infant he stuck her with before being committed. The infantile crooner Jennifer married came with a domineering 'stage mom' sister ala Lee DAMIEN: OMEN II Grant whose monetary demands push the broken starlet over the edge. But the outrageous tragedy fate had in store for Jennifer on the silver screen paled in comparison to the horror a pregnant Sharon Tate faced on the night of August 9, 1969 at the hands of cult leader Charles Manson. The impact of that crime can still be felt just as the murder of Dorothy Stratton so soon after the release of GALAXINA lent her a kind of B-movie immortality. The subversive feminist politics, taboo subject matter & kitschy dialogue was courtesy of writers Dorothy ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD Kingsley and Academy Award nominated Helen Deutsch who prepared the screenplay for LILI!. Science fiction author Harlan THE STARLOST Ellison declined to be credited with his work on the script although it's as ham-fisted and as unintentionally funny as his 1966 flop THE OSCAR. Speaking of Oscars, John CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND Williams received an Academy Award nomination for his score and Dionne Warwick's theme song became a chart-topping hit. An unauthorized follow-up called BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS that was written by film critic Roger Ebert sparked a lawsuit from the estate of Ms. Susann who were ultimately awarded 2 million in damages. In 1981 CBS aired a 2 part mini series remake called JACQUELINE SUSANN'S VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and in 1994 a half hour version of the novel was developed as a syndicated late night soap opera which ran for 65 episodes. Completists might also want to check out Rae Lawrence's trashy sequel novel "Jacqueline Susann's Shadow of the Dolls'. One of the best worst movies ever made.

Shipwrecked survivors slowly transform into mushrooms.

MATANGO is a beautiful & surreal horror fantasy that can best be described at a glance as GILLIGAN'S ISLAND meets THE INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. It is every inch a Toho release from it's inventive special effects team, a cast who peppered the Kaiju cinematic landscape and company men Ishiro Honda and Takeshi Kimura chosen to direct and adapt the short story 'The Voice in the Night'. Collectively Honda & Kimura put in decades of work for the studio manufacturing dozens of films (often in collaboration) from GOJIRA to THE MYSTERIANS to TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA. Masami GODZILLA VERSUS MECHAGODZILLA Fukushima and Shinchi Hoshi who created the kitschy puppet/space adventure series UCHUSEN SHIRIKA contributed to the scary screenplay which concerns a group of Westernized, Japanese friends who become stranded on an uncharted island when their boat is thrown off coarse by a sudden storm. Hirshi GHIDORAH: THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER Koizumi (the skipper), Akira GAMERA: GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE Kubo (the professor), Kumi GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA Mizuna (the movie star) and the rest of the castaways discover the remains of a previous group of survivors stranded there who appear to have vanished without a clue to their fate. Their own numbers begin to diminish after eating an intoxicating breed of mushroom that is the only source of food on the tropical paradise. The addictive fungus overwhelms the people eating it, transforming their bodies into colorful, 8 foot tall mushroom people who desire assimilation! The dumbed-down, badly dubbed American version was re-named ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE! and doesn't rate as highly in my books although it's without a doubt the better known cut even among cult movie enthusiasts. William Hodgson's short story 'The Voice In The Night' was previously filmed as an episode of the classic anthology series SUSPENSE in 1958.

Famed Japanese studio Toei produced this completely bonkers rip-off of STAR WARS for the princely sum of 6 million dollars. Like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, the 1st episode of what was intended to be a weekly series was given a wide international theatrical release to off-set costs. MESSAGE FROM OUTER SPACE is the TV movie cut of MESSAGE FROM SPACE which was met with critical contempt in theaters back in 1978. Quentin Tarantino favorite Kinji BATTLE ROYAL Fukasaku directed this atrocious, campy space opera based on a nonsensical screenplay by SUPER SENTAI series creator Shotaro Ishimori. Mikio ZATOICHI AND THE CHESS EXPERT Narita plays the Cylon-skinned space samurai Emperor Rocksaei XII who has conquered the peaceful world of Jellucia. The Jullucian princess Emeralida (Etuko SISTER STREET FIGHTER: FIFTH LEVEL FIST Shihomi) and her bodyguard (Makoto SAMARITAN ZATOICHI Sato) flee the planet in a nicely imagined tall ship propelled by the light striking it's solar sails. The silver Gavanas soldiers give pursuit knowing they carry with them a handful of magic, flying seeds that resemble radioactive testicles capable of 'growing' an army of resistance. Each seed is attuned to a warrior in the galaxy destined to champion the people of Jellucia. Phillip OZ Casnoff, Hirouki RUSH HOUR 3 Sanada & Sonny KILL BILL VOL.1 Chiba are but 3 of the hot-shot space pilots drawn into the fray when not space walking in regular clothes to gather zero gravity butterflies and magic seeds. Interesting wire work. You'll know it's wire work because you can see every one of them. I shouldn't knock the special effects too much. They're nowhere near the quality of work depicted in STAR WARS but they are as outrageous & wild as everything else in this live-action anime which resonates with cult movie appeal. The subsequent television series MESSAGE FROM SPACE: GALACTIC WARS wrapped production after one season in 1979.

Mark CAMP BLOOD: FIRST SLAUGHTER Polonia has been making movies for over 30 years and none of them have been worth watching...not even for laughs! He cranks out these mockbusters in his backyard on a used-car budget then dumps them into distribution so he can live like a parasite exploiting the hard work and artistry of legitimate film-makers. This would be Polonia's 3rd attempt at making The Worst Amityville Sequel In The Universe following the paralyzingly dull AMITYVILLE DEATH HOUSE & AMITYVILLE EXORCISM forming a non-sequitur trilogy of DOGS. Any actual connection to THE AMITYVILLE HORROR is tenuous at best as this feels like a remake of his earlier flop SHARKENSTEIN. Danielle REVOLT OF THE EMPIRE OF THE APES Donahue leads the cast of unknowns in this women's prison pic about an scientist (Jeff SHARK ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND Kirkendall) conducting sadistic & insane experiments. The man-eating shark FX look like they were photoshopped. After making 60 movies photoshop quality FX is the best you can expect from this talentless hack. Polonia craves fame but he's far more deserving of your contempt and AMITYVILLE ISLAND is concrete proof.

Rebecca PET GRAVEYARD Matthews directed this tedious mockbuster based on a lethargic script by Tom WAR OF THE WORLDS: THE ATTACK Jolliffe. AMITYVILLE WITCHES is the umpteenth, unauthorized, backyard sequel to 'The Amityville Hoax' perpetrated by George & Kathy Lutz back in the days of Bigfoot and The Philadelphia Experiment. A radical young witch (Amanda AMITYVILLE CORNFIELD Tyler) attempts to resurrect a demon (Toby ESCAPE FROM CANNIBAL FARM Wynn-Davis) to avenge the witches who suffered persecution in centuries past. The more sleepless genre addicts among us may recognize badly aging starlets Kira CHAINED HEAT 2001: SLAVE LOVERS Reed Lorsch & Donna DINOSAUR VALLEY GIRLS Spangler as moderate spell-casters opposed to human sacrifice. By way of special effects you get a handful of magic laser beams, electronically altered spooky voices and the sight of grown women huddled together against invisible forces crying out; "The Power of Three!". This is worse than the worst episode of CHARMED ever made. And not the good, delicious CHARMED with Rose McGowan either. I mean that new, vegan CHARMED on the CW nobody likes.

Director: Dustin Ferguson | Stars: Ben Gothier, Michelle Muir-Lewis, Julia Farrell, Mark Patton

Votes: 224

Dustin CAMP BLOOD 5 Ferguson wrote/directed this sequel to his instantly forgotten THE AMITYVILLE LEGACY (aka: AMITVILLE TOYBOX). AMITYVILLE: EVIL NEVER DIES (aka: AMITYVILLE CLOWNHOUSE) continues the story of a possessed, cymbal-banging toy money which brings misfortune to a new family unaware of it's connection to the Lutz haunting, the Defoe murders or the house at 112 Ocean Avenue. Ferguson's pic brazenly references the cursed artifacts (a lamp, a clock, a mirror & a dollhouse) which fueled the plots of the last 4 films in the authorized franchise before the 2011 reboot and tries to blend into the continuity by hijacking the premise begun with AMITYVILLE 4: THE EVIL ESCAPES. While I don't discourage fan fiction there is such a thing as copyright law & plagiarism. I might have more respect for Ferguson as a film-maker if AMITYVILLE CLOWNHOUSE was anything more than a bottom-feeding mockbuster. There's not an artistic bone in it's impoverished body. It may insist on being canon to THE AMITYVILLE HORROR franchise but you'll spot the difference immediately because this looks like it was shot in someone's back yard for a couple of hundred bucks. Not even worth the time of hard up genre addicts. Gay, old Mark A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE Patton has a depressing featured role if you want to know whatever happened to his career.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED is one of the more novel unauthorized sequels to George Romero's 1968 zombie masterpiece in that it's comprised entirely of brief animated clips retelling NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD through the eyes of 100 different artists from around the world. This collage of black and white clips offers a rapidly edited hodge-podge of imagery ranging from claymation to hand-drawn and computer animation to while incorporating much of the audio track of the original movie and even borrowed footage if an artist incorporated the material to craft his segment. None of the artists were paid for their contributions and to be honest that's a good thing because a lot of it's worthless. From my own experience as a trained artist much of it barely rates as 'animated'. The techniques used are occasionally sloppy photo manipulations or segments shamelessly re-imagining the film via the use of sock puppets or hand-held Barbie dolls. There's also nothing especially interesting in the way director Mike Scheider edited the pieces of art together. There's no attempt made to tell the story in a cohesive fashion and the starkly contrasting material of wildly varying quality puts this under the category of interesting failures. Hardcore Romero enthusiasts who know the movie inside/out might appreciate the decidedly niche NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED more than most. To it's credit it's vastly superior to 2015's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: DARKEST DAWN which was made entirely with CG animations that wouldn't have passed muster as cut-scenes on the PS2.

MIMESIS: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD may not be the best unauthorized sequel to the Romero zombie classic but I'm giving it an extra star for a screenplay which gives it an undeniably clever post-modern spin. A group of fans attending a nerd convention are invited by a washed up actor to attend an after hours party but find themselves stranded in the exact same farmhouse which was used as a shooting location for NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Scenes from the 1968 B&W movie have been borrowed or recreated to juxtapose with the modern characters each of whom has been lovingly named after someone connected to that branch of the Romero zombie universe. On the downside MIMESIS: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD probably only cost about as much as the original 5 decades ago and it shows. Also, while I admire writer/director Douglas Schulze for crafting such a respectable homage it's also true that he's not in the same league as George Romero as a film-maker. Including footage shot by Romero only serves to underscore that fact. The new material tries to fit in but doesn't always manage to do so. It's also never scary and the gore effects are tame and less convincing than they needed to be. Top billed Sid NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D: RE-ANIMATION Haig has a brief cameo as does CHILDREN OF THE CORN actor Courtney Gains. Look for Bill FLESHEATER: REVENGE OF THE LIVING DEAD Hinzman as a detective near the end. Hinzman played the zombie who was coming to get Barbara but got Johnny instead and would re-appear in the 30th Anniversary cut of that film by edited by John Russo. The director and star (Alan Maldonado) would reunite for the unexpected 2018 sequel MIMESIS: NOSFERATU - a post-modern re-imagining of the silent era vampire classic.

87. The Mysterious Monsters (1975)

Peter Graves examines a range of supernatural topics, including mysterious monsters Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster and the Yeti, and also psychics and hypnotism.

In the 70s a company called Sunn Classic Pictures distributed these cheap mockumentaries championing the belief of everything from Biblical prophecies to E.S.P. to ancient civilizations built by visitors from outer space. A celebrity narrator swore solemnly to the dramatic re-creations of real people encountering Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster and all manner of unearthly supernatural forces. Peter KILLERS FROM SPACE Graves delivers his lines like his brother Leslie Nielsen reading directly from the script of POLICE SQUAD without a hint of irony. It can be amusing as are the grainy footage and photos offered up as proof. Robert THE AMAZING WORLD OF PSYCHIC PHENOMENON Guenette wrote/directed this slight, tabloid entertainment that feels like it crawled out of a time capsule.

88. Curse of Bigfoot (1975 TV Movie)

"Curse of Bigfoot" tells the tale of a group of high school students on an archaeological dig who discover a centuries old mummified body in a sealed cave.

Director: Dave Flocker | Stars: Bob Clymire, Jan Swihart, Bill Simonsen, Dennis Kottmeier

Votes: 778

In 1958 brothers Dave (director) & James (writer) Flocker made what has to be a contender for The Worst Movie Ever Made; TEENAGERS BATTLE THE THING. It was about a group of teens who discover the still living remains of a mummy which soon after embarks on a bloodless, black and white rampage. It was so terrible it never got released except in the brothers hometown where it was made. Fast forward nearly 2 decades and original stars (nobody you know...) Bob Clymire & Jan Swihart return as married version of the characters they played in a hastily filmed, color prologue. Their memory of finding a slumbering Bigfoot is told as a flashback. Hey, bigfoot monsters were hot in the 70s and it's not like anyone could tell the difference between a mummy and a bigfoot anyway on this one's special effects budget. THE CURSE OF BIGFOOT was dropped into the syndicated tv movie market. This DOG's an obscure guilty pleasure this cinematic masochist recommends to like-minded individuals. Others will be bored out of their minds.

89. Mimesis Nosferatu (2018)

87 min | Horror

When the Harker Arts Academy drama club produces a play based on the silent horror film Nosferatu (1922), reality and fiction collide, and blood begins to spill.

Director: Douglas Schulze | Stars: Kristy Swanson, Lance Henriksen, Allen Maldonado, Calhoun Koenig

Votes: 137

Lance PUMPKINHEAD: BLOOD FEUD Henriksen plays the JIGSAW-like leader of a cult of cosplay geeks who draw murderous inspiration from classic horror movies. 'The Autuer' (as he calls himself) has helmed a kind of remake of the German silent-era classic NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR just as students are prepping a stage production for a school project. His minions in Max Schreck drag descend on the student body with the survivor of the last film on their trail hoping to avert another massacre. Allen BLACK-ISH Maldonado is pretty good as 'Duane' who has become a vigilante in pursuit of The Autuer since the events of 2011's MIMESIS: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Director/writer Douglas Schulze has constructed a nifty horror movie franchise with the obscure 'Mimesis' brand. It's got a clever, post-modern vibe and Schulze knows how to extract what he needs from his large, inexperienced cast and flexes enough directorial muscle so stars Henriksen and Kristy FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC Swanson stand out during their brief time in front of the camera. He and co-author Jeff Meyers script lovingly homages cinematic vampire lore and treats the subject matter and the fans with respect. What holds MIMESIS: NOSFERATU back is it's cripplingly low budget. It's a problem when the vampires in your movie aren't as scary as the original NOSFERATU despite a century of advances in the field of make up and the advent of CG. The money simply wasn't there but what makes it to the screen is ten times better than what usually emerges from the backyards of indie exploitation film-makers. I'll admit the promise of MIMESIS III has me intrigued.

In 1988, Earth makes the first contact with an alien civilization. In 1991, these aliens, known as Newcomers, slowly begin to be integrated into human society after three years of quarantine.

Rockne SEASQUEST DSV O'Bannon wrote this likeable buddy-cop action adventure for director Graham THE FINAL CONFLICT: OMEN III Baker. Borrowing the human cop/alien cop theme explored in 1987's THE HIDDEN, ALIEN NATION cast Mandy YENTYL Patinkin as a one of 'The Newcomers'; a humanoid species who escaped from slavery and were granted asylum in the U.S.A. Sam Francisco has been partnered with a slightly bigoted cop named Sykes whose partner was recently killed by gangs looking to control the alien settlement in L.A. James ROLLERBALL Caan co-stars as the senior detective who believes the gangs are tied to a Newcomer named Harcourt (Terence SUPERMAN II Stamp) and a designer drug making the rounds with dangerous side-effects. Patinkin & Caan are capable actors but have little rapport. The actors who replaced them in the short-lived ALIEN NATION television series (Eric Pierpoint & Gary Graham) crackled with chemistry by comparison. I blame the writing. It never excels at being a great action movie or being especially good science fiction. It is however above average as an entertainment with a strong assist from Stan Winston's famed make-up studio and a soundtrack littered with pop tunes. TV producer Kenneth Johnson who launched the popular V franchise developed the film as a weekly show which focused more on the background of the Newcomers and the dramatic elements drawn from their assimilation into human culture as much as the police action. The series wasn't a ratings hit but attracted a cultish fan-base and was followed by 5 made-for-TV movies. In 2021 Fox announced a 10 part mini-series revival was in the works.

Kenneth THE INCREDIBLE HULK Johnson wrote/directed this TV movie pilot based on the moderately successful buddy cop pic ALIEN NATION released the year before. Fox hoped the high profile science fiction show would attract viewers to their fledgling television network. Eric FAME Pierpoint played the slightly renamed George Francisco who along with his devoted wife Susan (Michele SNAKE EATER II: THE DRUG BUSTER Scarabelli) are raising two teenagers (Lauren FRAME-UP II: THE COVER-UP Woodland and Sean SOMETHING IS OUT THERE Six) in the crime-ridden city of L.A. The Francisco family are Tenctonese slaves who sought sanctuary in the U.S. after their spaceship crash landed in the Navajo desert. George works for the police department and has been assigned a human partner slightly re-named Sikes from the 1988 film. Gary M.A.N.T.I.S. Graham plays the rougher-around-the-edges Sikes who comes to appreciate his co-worker as a friend while investigating a series of murders connected to a species native to the Newcomer home world. The pilot recycled certain scenes from the film for continuity's sake and was rolled into 1st season which went immediately into production. Above average.

ALIEN NATION was the short-lived spin off of the moderately successful sci-fi/buddy cop pic created by Rockne SEASQUEST DSV O'Bannon in conjunction with The Fox Network and show-runner Kenneth Johnson who launched a host of classic TV shows to the forefront of popular culture including THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and V. The show which ran for 22 episodes focused on the friendship between officers Matt Sikes (Gary ROBOT JOX Graham) and George Francisco (Eric HOT PURSUIT Pierpoint) who solve cases assigned to them by Captain Grazer (Ron CHILD'S PLAY 3: LOOK WHO'S STALKING Frassier). The stories told were a traditional mix of murder mysteries with the occasional episode tied to the science & culture of the Tenctonse people and the racial hatred 'The Newcomers' face from the less tolerant folks in their community. Officer Sikes is dating a Newcomer immigrant (Terri DEATHSTALKER III Treas) while his friend Francisco has a family to raise amidst the social turmoil caused when the spaceship carrying 300,000 alien slaves crash landed on earth 5 years before. Despite some positive feedback from critics and a devoted fanbase Fox canceled ALIEN NATION at the end of it's freshman year because it's ratings weren't sufficient to justify the high cost associated with the quality series. In 1994 ALIEN NATION: DARK HORIZON aired as a TV movie revival which was a ratings hit spawning 4 additional sequels (ALIEN NATION: BODY AND SOUL, ALIEN NATION: MILLENNIUM, ALIEN NATION:THE ENEMY WITHIN and ALIEN NATION: THE UDASA LEGACY). In 2021 Fox announced a 10 episode mini-series reboot of the ALIEN NATION franchise.

93. The Bionic Woman (1976–1978)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

After fully recovering from her nearly fatal bout of bionic rejection, Jaime Sommers, the first female cyborg, is assigned to spy missions of her own.

Stars: Lindsay Wagner, Richard Anderson, Martin E. Brooks, Ford Rainey

THE BIONIC WOMAN was a fondly remembered spin-off of ABC's THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN from creator Kenneth Johnson who based both series on the novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin. Lindsay THE PAPER CHASE Wagner got the part of Jaime Sommers for a third season episode of Lee Major's hit show where she appeared as Steve Austin's love interest. She is believed to have been killed in a parachuting accident but was revived by the O.S.I. and augmented with bionic legs, an arm and a robotic ear capable of listening to a human conversation blocks away. Richard THE NIGHT STRANGLER Anderson played Oscar Goldman; the head of the Office of Scientific Intelligence who along with Dr. Rudy Wells (Martin T-FORCE Brooks) recruited Jaime for secret missions tailored for someone with her super powers. For 3 kitschy seasons THE BIONIC WOMAN battled kidnappers, aliens, fem-bots and even Bigfoot aided by her bionic German shepherd Max. When the bloom began to wear off the franchise ABC canceled the show which was immediately picked up by NBC for a third season. With Lee Majors contractually unable to appear in cross-over episodes during the final season Christopher THE HOWLING Stone joined the cast as a potential love interest for Jaime who was also subbing as a school teacher when not saving the world. Wagner gained iconic fame for her role and won the Emmy for Best Actress in 1977. Years after both shows left the air 3 television movies were produced; THE RETURN OF THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN AND THE BIONIC WOMAN, BIONIC SHOWDOWN: THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN AND THE BIONIC WOMAN and 1994's BIONIC EVER AFTER? THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN AND THE BIONIC WOMAN. In 2007 NBC attempted a reboot that entirely failed to connect with audiences and was canceled after only 8 episodes.

94. Bionic Woman (2007)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

A reimagining of the popular 1970s TV series about a female athlete who is given bionic strength.

Stars: Michelle Ryan, Miguel Ferrer, Molly Price, Lucy Hale

NBC greenlit this uncredited remake of Kenneth Johnson's cult classic science fiction/adventure series re-created by David Eick who was known for productions like AMERICAN GOTHIC and CAPRICA. His writing partner throughout the brief, unpopular run of BIONIC WOMAN was Laeta Kalogcidis who made a solid impression on me for her work on BIRDS OF PREY. Michele EATENDERS Ryan stars as bionic secret agent Jaime Sommers who was critically injured in a near fatal accident. Her boyfriend whose father pioneered the science of bionics gives the bartender mechanically enhanced legs, an arm, an ear, an eye and a blood stream loaded with healing nanobots. Probably the addition of those super powers to a full time job of playing mom to a kid sister would lighten the load but it only seems to complicate the lives of siblings Jaime & Becka (Lucy PRETTY LITTLE LIARS Hale). Almost immediately her boyfriend is murdered by a malfunctioning, bionic nut-case and his father (Mark DOOM PATROL Sheppard) has just escaped from prison with the creation of fem-bots on his insane mind. Katee Sackhoff single-handedly steals the show as the villainous Sarah Corvus whose circuitry needs an upgrades that only Jaime's got. I thought Sackhoff was miscast as Starbuck in BATTLESTAR GALACTICA but in this she's white hot! Given the darker, more sophisticated tone of the show, TWIN PEAKS Miguel Ferrer played the sinister Burkut agent Bledsoe who guides Jaime on her missions. BIONIC WOMAN was off to a brilliant start except for one thing...the casting of bland, EASTENDERS actress Ryan in the role of Jaime Sommers. On a scale from Sarah BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Gellar to Jennifer ALIAS Garner she's not even an Eliza DOLLHOUSE Dushku. She has very little stage presence and evaporates on camera during the elaborately executed action sequences. NBC quietly canceled BIONIC WOMAN during the writer's strike after only 8 low rated episodes. When ABC launched a reboot of Kenneth Johnson's V in 2009 he sued to make sure they listed him as series creator in the opening credits.

Danny DEATH RACE 4: BEYOND ANARCHY Trejo starred in this lesser-than sequel to the minor cult hit MACHETE. The character originated with Robert THE FACULTY Rodriguez's family-friendly SPY KIDS trilogy before taking center stage in a fake trailer created for 2007's GRINDHOUSE that made a strong impression with fans. He's as perfect in the part as Charles Bronson was in DEATH WISH. While on a secret mission for the President (Charlie HOT SHOTS! Sheen aka; Carlos Estivez) Machete discovers a twisted plot by a billionaire named Vox to detonate an atomic bomb whose trigger is a beating human heart. Mel THE EXPENDABLES 3 Gibson has been obsessed with bringing about WWIII since a vision from God unveiled the future. Gibson is so much fun as a villain you'll forgive Johnny Depp's bitter ex Amber Heard who plays Vox's beauty queen accomplice. Her gimmicky character is surprisingly unappealing in a movie loaded with strong women. It becomes obvious Heard isn't up to the challenge during an outrageous KILL BILL VOL. 1 style duel that hits the screen with a thud. Michelle THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS Rodriguez handles the exploitation and violence exploding around her like a pro. In another sub-plot that never quite works Lady A STAR IS BORN Gaga, Antonio DESPERADO Bandaras, Walter PREDATORS Goggins & Cuba JERRY MCGUIRE Gooding, Jr. share the role of a hired killer known only as 'The Chameleon'. The special effects are a mixed bag despite an estimated 20 million dollar production budget. Sometimes the cartoonish CG is cringe-worthy and the practical make-up effects are embarrassing. Mostly the fun I was having with the material exceeded the groans and eye-rolls. Don't be bummed out by the abrupt ending. The fake trailer for MACHETE KILLS AGAIN...IN SPACE is about to become a reality with the 80 year old action star reuniting with the versatile director for a STAR WARS flavored sequel in 2022.

On September 30th, 1975 the members of the Disciples of James Dean hold a reunion at Juanita's 5 & Dime in the dusty town of McCarthy in honor of the 20th anniversary of the actor's death. Sandy Dennis plays Mona; the former leader of the fan club who has lived her whole life working behind the counter at Woolworth's raising an illegitimate, teenage son. Her Bible-thumping boss Juanita (Sudie GREASE Bond) has employed Mona and her best friend Sissy since the night James Dean died in a car accident back in 1955. As a Christian Juanita is more tolerant of Mona than the town flirt Sissy played by THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK actress Cher in an early, impressive starring role. Their friends Edna Louise (Marta PLAYING FOR TIME Heflin) & Stella Mae (Kathy MISERY Bates) arrive with the latter immediately resuming the bullying aspect of their relationship that was apparent in high school. The only people not there are Joe and Mona's teenage son. Joe vanished from McCarthy following a violent altercation with Sissy's boyfriend on the night James Dean died. The assault and what precipitated the homophobic attack is a wound on the community that has never healed. Also missing is the sports car belonging to a mysterious woman named Joanne who Mona is sure she knows from somewhere. Gay actor Mark A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE Patton is as unforgettable as the trans teenage boy as Karen AIRPORT 1975 Black is as the post op woman he became after being raped. In a movie exploding with acting ability including Dennis' performance which is of the dramatic magnitude of her work in WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINA WOOLF? Patton and Black shine brightest. The (obviously) very different actors play the character of Joe/Joanne sometimes simultaneously thanks to the old school optical trickery of ghost glass and an Oscar winning director who perfected his moves on the Broadway show written by Ed Graczyk. Robert THE PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION Altman composed as much as directed this searing drama which exposes the lies these women have been telling themselves for decades. It's a riveting piece of work that's even lacerating to endure but I can't recommend it strongly enough.

Geno AMITYVILLE COP McGahee wrote/directed this DOG with an assist from the equally obscure & talentless Forris Day, Jr. AMITYVILLE: THE FINAL CHAPTER (aka: SICKLE) is another backyard calamityville thrown together with cell phones and food stamps starring no one you know. Martin SATANIC MEAT CLEAVER MASSACRE Du Plessis plays SICKLE; a generic demon with glowing eyes and a skin condition who let a 12 year old boy take the fall for murdering his babysitter. The boy is released back into the community as a grown man who immediately attracts the attention of the top-hat wearing monster who begins killing the young man's friends in order to frame him again. The occasional kills are quite bloody but completely woundless because a couple of cans of tomato soup was all there was for in the budget for make up special effects. A few moments of utterly fake CG would be laughable but you'll be so numb with disappointment by then to even crack a smile. The acting is strictly amateur hour and nothing about it matters or makes any kind of sense including the unsatisfying ending.

The Asylum produced this insignificant & instantly forgotten mockbuster of the not-much better BATTLE: LOS ANGELES released concurrently to theatres. This SyFy TV movie was written/directed/edited by Mark Atkins who threw in cinematography at no extra charge. Atkins has made a score of vids for the poverty row producers including ALIEN ORIGIN and PRINCESS OF MARS and this may be his best work. It's also garbage. Mia LAVALANTULA Peeples plays a samurai leading a band of soldiers (Theresa ASTEROID VS EARTH June-Tao, Gerald ANDROID COP Webb, etc) towards an alien mothership poised to destroy L.A. in preparation for an all-out invasion. They're joined by a man who claims to have been abducted 70 years before when on a mission flying over the Bermuda Triangle. Gay porn actor Dylan HERCULES REBORN Vox plays the time traveller who may know more about the mega-slug monster in control of the craft than he's willing to say. Joe 2 LAVA 2 LANTULA Lawson and a couple of photo-shoppers lifted the some of the cg from video games and leftover code from ALIEN ABDUCTION and WAR OF THE WORLDS 2: THE NEXT WAVE. Avoid anything made by these parasites is my best advise.
