Oh, Canada debuting this week on the Croisette is high time to see lesser-seen Schrader on the Criterion Channel, who’ll debut an 11-title series including the likes of Touch, The Canyons, and Patty Hearst, while Old Boyfriends (written with his brother Leonard) and his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” are also programmed. Five films by Jean Grémillon, a rather underappreciated figure of French cinema, will be showing
Series-wise, there’s an appreciation of the synth soundtrack stretching all the way back to 1956’s Forbidden Planet while, naturally, finding its glut of titles in the ’70s and ’80s––Argento and Carpenter, obviously, but also Tarkovsky and Peter Weir. A Prince and restorations of films by Bob Odenkirk, Obayashi, John Greyson, and Jacques Rivette (whose Duelle is a masterpiece of the highest order) make streaming debuts. I Am Cuba, Girlfight, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Dazed and Confused are June’s Criterion Editions.

Rosario Dawson’s starring role in Disney+’s Ahsoka, premiering Aug. 22 and based on a character from Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is not her first time bringing an animated figure to life — she played bassist Valerie Brown in Universal-MGM’s Josie and the Pussycats, the directorial debut of Can’t Hardly Wait screenwriters Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan.
Based on the Archie Comics series that spawned the 1970s cartoon, the 2001 film centers on a female pop-rock group plucked from obscurity in Riverdale. Tara Reid, then 24, was cast first as drummer Melody Valentine following her turn in American Pie. Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That), 19, nabbed the part of frontwoman Josie McCoy over Zooey Deschanel and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
For Val, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds — who produced the gold-selling soundtrack — encouraged the filmmakers to consider a music star, and Aaliyah, TLC’s Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Beyoncé were among those to audition.

As we all mourn the end of the Halloween season and brace ourselves for the seemingly unending parade of holidays based on familial obligations or gross displays of capitalism, November is here to serve as a little respite. Many of the horror movies that disappeared off streaming platforms to try and snag some extra Halloween funds in October are returning to their respective platforms, but the trickling in of cheesy Christmas fare is also coming in fast.
Fortunately, there's a massive amount of old favorites and exciting new titles trying to beat the holiday havoc, and we've got five between Hulu and Disney+ that you would be wise to check out. Action? Teen movies? Horror comedies? Musicals? Weirdly bleak arthouse film with surprising brutality? November has it all, baby.

YouTube has again turned to big-name entertainment personalities to anchor its latest slate of ad-supported originals.
At its Brandcast Delivered event for advertisers Tuesday, YouTube announced an unscripted series with Will Smith following his latest fitness journey and a new docuseries with Alicia Keys premiering this summer.
The video giant also announced the third and final season of comedy “Liza on Demand,” starring popular comedian and YouTube creator Liza Koshy — marking the last of YouTube’s scripted originals, after phasing them out starting in 2019; “Ice Cold,” a docuseries produced by hip-hop trio Migos exploring issues around racial inequity; and a new special celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander culture from executive producers including LeBron James and Michelle Kwan.
The YouTube Originals strategy remains the same: They’re projects built around personalities and top YouTube creators designed to draw a large audience, as well as specials to support specific causes, said YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl.

Liza on Demand, the half-hour scripted comedy series created by and starring Liza Koshy, is to end with its upcoming third season.
The move means that YouTube will wave goodbye to its last scripted series after pivoting away from the genre and focusing on unscripted programming instead.
The third season of Liza on Demand, which is produced by Above Average, will premiere later this year. It will follow the chaotic misadventures of Liza (Koshy) and her roommates/best friends, Harlow (Kimiko Glenn) and Oliver (Travis Coles), as they wade through the highs and lows of their 20s.
It is exec produced by Koshy, Courtney Carter, Deborah Kaplan, Harry Elfont, Marc Lieberman, Ally Engelberg, Caroline Miller and Elliot Glazer.
The third season of the show, which was originally renewed for its third run in January 2020, had been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Forget nine lives, these pussycats are livelier than ever 20 years later. Directed and written by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, Josie and the Pussycats became one of the early aughts' biggest box office bombs. Released on April 11, 2001, the movie grossed just $14 million and was panned—sometimes savagely so—in almost every review. The experience scarred the directorial duo so much that they never helmed a movie again. But here's the thing mostly male film critics failed to realize at the time: Josie and the Pussycats—which starred Rachael Leigh Cook (lead singer Josie), Tara Reid (drummer Melody) and Rosario Dawson (bassist Val)—was supposed to be...

YouTube claims its new windowing strategy for originals — making them available to watch free, with ads, for everyone — is delivering big audiences just as execs hoped.
Season 2 of “Liza on Demand,” the sitcom starring and co-created by popular YouTube comedian Liza Koshy, scored more views for debut episode “Naked” in its first week than any of the video platform’s original series to date. In the episode, through a series of mishaps, Koshy’s character accidentally finds herself nude in public — and she later strips bare on a city street in a bid to prove she has nothing to hide.

Ensuring that the next time you’re cuddling with that special someone, you can hop over to the turntable and spin them a little “Backdoor Lover,” Pitchfork reports that the Josie And The Pussycats soundtrack is making its way to vinyl. Produced by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, and featuring work from a number of influential songwriters of the early 2000s (plus Letters To Cleo’s Kay Hanley on lead vocals), the Pussycats soundtrack was significantly more successful than its attendant movie (despite the latter’s hard-won status as a satirical cult-classic).
The album is being reissued by Mondo, which is putting together a big event in L.A. to commemorate the release. The film’s directors, Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, will be in attendance, while Hanley will be on hand to play a Josie And The Pussycats set.

10. “Angie Tribeca” (TBS)
Can Rashida Jones and her department of hysterical cops get some love this year? Nancy and Steve Carell’s new TBS comedy skewering the police procedural, “Naked Gun”-style, produced two full seasons, 20 total episodes, and a countless total of cumulative laughs. Absurd humor of such high regard is virtually impossible to do well without becoming repetitive, and “Angie Tribeca” proved itself sustainable in one year by pumping out two perfect seasons. 2016 should be looked at as a banner year for the program, even if it continues to top itself in seasons to come.

The mesmerizing Alia Shawkat plays Dory, an underemployed post-grad who finds her purpose when she begins to investigate the disappearance of college acquaintance Chantal. With...

When MTV asks if you want to visit Snoop Dogg’s compound, you say yes. Especially when the reason is “Mary + Jane,” the network’s charming new scripted comedy about two young women trying to run a “mostly legal prescription delivery service.”
Snoop Dogg is an executive producer on the show, as well as a dedicated lover of television (his current favorite shows include “Power,” “Narcos” and “Stranger Things”). And he’s also a big fan of “Mary + Jane.” “When I fall in love it’s hard for me to get out,” he told IndieWire. “I’m all the way locked in.”

“Mary + Jane”
September 5 on MTV
What Is It? From the writer/directors behind the cult favorite “Josie and the Pussycats” adaptation, this series follows two “ganjapeneurs” who run a weed delivery service in Los Angeles.
I’ll Like It If I Like… The “Broad City” influence is pretty clear, as the show is focused on the tight friendship between Jordan (Scout Durwood) and Paige (Jessica Rothe) and their stoner antics.
Why Should I Care? Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont’s unique approach to satirizing La hipster culture really help this show stand out from the pack of other female-led comedies, while also promising a more surreal touch. Durwood and Rothe also make for an enjoyable pairing. For fans of the pot comedy genre, it’s an easy sell.

The new comedy “Mary + Jane,” debuting tonight on MTV, has been compared quite a bit to Comedy Central’s “Broad City.” But the real comparison point, if you’re familiar with the previous work of its creators, is “Josie and the Pussycats.”
The 2001 cult film, written and directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, was a surprisingly tough yet hilarious teardown of superficial teen culture – one that still has a rabid fanbase.
That following even includes Jessica Rothe, who (along with Scout Durwood) plays one of the “ganjapreneurs” on “Mary + Jane,” delivering weed to an eclectic range of Angelenos. “It was not until halfway through shooting that she admitted how much a ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ fan she was,” Elfont said.
“Mary + Jane” is Kaplan and Elfont’s first TV series. Like many filmmakers (this is “the answer that everyone gives,” Elfont admits), the duo eventually realized that TV is...

Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
It’s funny how shocking and taboo the simple subject of a show like Weeds was when it aired in 2005. Backed into a corner when her family’s plush livelihood is at stake, Nancy Botwin began selling weed on the Dl, all the while keeping up her soccer mom appearances. Fast-forward to 2016, and seemingly every network either has a cannabis-focused comedy debuting, or one in the works, and none of the new characters popping up in any of the new shows feel the need hide their main source of income from the world.
Such is the “mostly legal prescription delivery service” at the center of MTV’s new comedy Mary + Jane, run by raspy-voiced snark machine Jordan (Scout Durwood) and her sensible, vision board-obsessing best friend Paige (Jessica Rothe), who probably binge-watched the entirety of Weeds as homework. Much like Wet Hot American Summer, Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan's Can't Hardly Wait is a film that has weirdly improved with age, as many of the members of its very young cast went on to do much bigger things with their Hollywood careers. Also much like Wet Hot American Summer, this makes it the kind of material that is also just asking to be revisited with the entire original cast... and it turns out that's an idea for which Jennifer Love Hewitt is totally on-board. Following a special screening of the movie at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the actress took to her personal Twitter account this weekend and made a pitch to fans about a reunion for Can't Hardly Wait. She didn't exactly provide a possible plotline for the movie, but you can see her request below: Can't Hardly Wait reunion movie anyone? Let's get them to make it!

Major Us broadcasters are developing more than 20 TV adaptations of feature films as they follow the example of their cable counterparts.
Us pay-tv networks have recently found success with the likes of Fargo and Teen Wolf, and have lined up further adaptations of Scream (MTV), Twelve Monkeys (Syfy), Shutter Island (HBO) and Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead (Starz).
Traditional networks - ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW - are now getting involved and have struck deals for adaptations of well-known films including Big, Minority Report and The Devil’s Advocate, as well as more niche films such as John Ritter’s Problem Child and Val Kilmer’s Real Genius.
The networks have ordered scripts for the 20-plus adaptations and will decide which projects to pilot by January. Those taken to series will likely be ordered in May for an autumn 2015 launch.

If you, like me, thought that TV networks were already planning to remake every single movie that’s already existed, you’re wrong. Two new remakes were announced yesterday, both wildly different than the other and both also coming from Fox. The first is a remake of the 2005 Will Smith film Hitch, while the other is Frankenstein, a modern day, sci-fi interpretation of the character from Mary Shelley’s classic novel. The single-camera Hitch comedy will be written by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (Made of Honor), while Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett will executive produce the potential series, which, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is described as “a workplace comedy that explores dating and sexual politics.” Fox has already given the Hitch remake a script commitment. Meanwhile, Frankenstein comes from Homeland‘s Howard Gordon and Crisis‘ Rand Ravich and has received a pilot order from Fox.

If you’re feeling out of luck and out of love, don’t fret; the date doctor is on his way to television. That’s right, according to Deadline, Fox has sanctioned a half-hour series based on Will Smith’s hit romantic comedy, Hitch.
Admittedly, this isn’t the first time that Smith’s Overbook Entertainment and Sony have tried to get the wheels in motion on a series based on the titular love guru, following failed attempts in 2007 and 2010 with a variety of writers.
Now, however, it seems the project has been swept off its feet so to speak, landing a single-camera series at Fox, who describe the adaptation as “a workplace comedy that explores dating and sexual politics.” Though it’s next to impossible that Will Smith would actually star in the show, it’s understood that the A-lister has signed on board to executive produce in tandem...

On June 12, 1998, "Can't Hardly Wait" took teen movies down to Paradise City.
Directed by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, the high school comedy is certainly of its era -- not just because of its jokes (lolers here include one-liners about Brad Pitt's relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow and Pearl Jam), but its cast as well. To wit: Jennifer Love Hewitt, at the height of her "Party of Five" powers, is the unattainable attainable dream girl, while Jerry O'Connell and his erstwhile secret identity is the former high school star now in struggling in college (always remember to bring rubber flip-flops for the shower). O'Connell, of course, isn't the only famous face to make a quick appearance in "Can't Hardly Wait" alongside stars Love-Hewitt, Lauren Ambrose, Seth Green and Ethan Embry. Exclusive: E! has put in development another scripted project as the network is preparing to greenlight its first scripted pilots. Shoreline, which has an Upstairs, Downstairs feel to it, is being written by Carolyn Ingber (The Mentalist) and executive produced by Switched At Birth exec producer Becky Hartman Edwards. It centers on the golden child of a small coastal town in South Carolina who, after a scandal in New York, returns home to see that a major Hollywood primetime soap, The Shore Line Yacht Club, is the biggest employer in town. An enormous class divide separates the cast and producers from the townspeople, yet their lives are continuously and irrevocably intertwined — for better or worse. Fox TV Studios is producing. In addition to Shoreline, Edwards has another small-town soap in contention at E! sibling NBC, which she is writing. Sony TV and Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment produce. Expanding E!

Bryan Buckley is set to make his feature directing debut on the film adaptation of classic self-help book "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" at Lionsgate Summit says Deadline.
Dr. John Gray's famous series, first published in 1992, views marital and relationship problems "in terms of distinct and pervasive gender differences". Essentially it points out how men and women have different reasoning and thus how the same problem is perceived quite differently by the genders.
Over a dozen titles in the series have since been published. Reese Witherspoon will star in the project which scribes Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont have adapted. Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun will produce and shooting aims to kick off in January.
