When a sitcom reaches a certain level of longevity, it can be easy for writers to take their audience for granted. Storylines get lightly reworked, if not recycled wholesale. Cheap ratings are scored by having a significant character get married (call it the "Rhoda boost"). And there's no better way to guarantee the maximum amount of eyeballs than to have a major celebrity play themselves within the world of our favorite characters.
This typically works. Who can forget the time Bobby Brady faked a serious illness to earn a bedside visit from Joe Namath on "The Brady Bunch," or the time that pint-sized prankster Arnold Jackson pulled the same trick to get Muhammad Ali up to the Drummond's penthouse on "Diff'rent Strokes?" These are memorable episodes to be sure, but there's nothing more to them than the cameo.
It's far more satisfying when you can drop the celeb into...

Exclusive: Friday Night Dinner is coming to the U.S.

It marks the fourth attempt to remake the show — which ran for nearly 10 years in the UK on Channel 4 — in the U.S. and the first to get past the development stage. It has scored a 10-episode order.

The British series, which ran for six seasons from 2011-20, is centered around the regular dinner experience of the middle class British Jewish Goodman family every Friday night.

More than a year after season two of sci-fi adventure series The Orville came to an end, leading man and executive producer Seth MacFarlane finally has an update for season three.
“All I can say is we are working on it. We’re working on it very hard, we got hit by this just like everyone else but we’re working on it,” MacFarlane revealed during an Instagram conversation with The Orville co-star Jessica Szohr.
Like most Hollywood productions, The Orville came to a halt in March as Covid-19 began spreading across the United States. The series was also in the middle of moving from its original network home Fox to Hulu for its upcoming season.
While MacFarlane remained pretty tight-lipped about season three production for The Orville, he chatted with his co-star about why he enjoys working on the show. His appreciation for the comedy stems from the varied...

Upper Middle Bogan is set to be remade by CBS for American audiences.
The show's co-creator, Robyn Butler, told 774 ABC Melbourne's Jon Faine that the Us version would be "the same, but in America".
The redo is untitled, and presumably won't have the word "bogan" in the American title.
The original is available in the Us on streaming service Hulu and ABC iview in Australia. A third series will screen on the ABC later this year.
Butler and Wayne Hope, who made the feature Now Add Honey last year, will team with American writer Dan O'Shannon (Cheers, Frasier, Modern Family) on the pilot script.

I was of the opinion it would either be Lincoln or Silver Linings Playbook winning at the 2013 Producers Guild Awards, making it that much easier to pick one as the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars. Well, the producers made it even easier than that... they chose "Option C". Ben Affleck may have been snubbed a nomination for Best Director by the Academy, but ever since, Argo has won big at the Critics' Choice Awards, Golden Globes and now the PGA awards as it was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, giving it a clear path to winning Best Picture at the Oscars at the end of March. Tomorrow night the Screen Actors Guild will hold the 2013 SAG Awards and while I predicted Silver Linings Playbook would take the award when I posted my thoughts on Wednesday, at this point I would...

In 1995 director Steve Moore was approached by the folks at Disney TV Animation to make a "Fractured Fairy Tales type of short" and they were willing to give him stylistic free rein. Redux Riding Hood secured a great script from star sitcom writer Dan O'Shannon about a wolf (voiced by Seinfeld's Michael Richards) who five years after the Little Red Riding Hood incident, laments his biggest failure in life: letting the rouge-cloaked girl get away. He becomes obsessed with the mishap, and it starts to ruin his marriage (to a sheep voiced by Mia Farrow). Eventually he builds a time machine to travel back to the fateful moment at granny's house. The short was nominated for an Academy Award in 1997, and it's easy to see why. Lacey...

Well you don't have to tell me twice, after Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash were awarded the USC Libraries Scripter Award on Saturday I got a feeling the Writers Guild would be going the same way, and just that has happened. Last night the WGA awarded The Descendants for Best Adapted Screenplay while also awarding Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris for Best Original Screenplay. As a result I have had to change my Oscar predictions in the Best Adapted Screenplay category as it would appear all heat was on the adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings's novel and not on Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillian's script for Moneyball. You can see those updated predictions right here. In the Original category I have had Allen's script at the top since the beginning and I see no reason to change that now. Granted, The Artist is expected to...

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

• Rick Porter chatted with some of the "Modern Family" scribes about the Emmy hopes of the freshman hit as well as the snub of a TV vet: "'Sadly, the unsung hero is Ed O'Neill,' writer/co-exec producer Dan O'Shannon says. 'He's just so great. I think some of the stuff that's really great about him is sometimes maybe overlooked in the bigger comedy of the other characters. But he just really holds the show down.' Adds fellow co-ep Bill Wrubel, 'He never feels the need to be the center of a scene. He's happy to kind of just do his line and react. His generosity on stage was really eye-opening. And he's super-fun to write...

The producers of hit ABC comedy Modern Family have expressed their disappointment at actor Ed O'Neill failing to receive an Emmy nomination. While O'Neill's co-stars Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara were all nominated, the former Married...With Children star was not. Dan O'Shannon told Zap2It: "Sadly, the unsung hero is Ed O'Neill. I think some of the stuff that's really great about him is sometimes maybe overlooked in the bigger comedy of the other characters. But he just really holds the show down." Fellow producer Bill Wrubel agreed: "He never feels the need to be the centre of a scene. He's happy to kind of just do his line and react. His generosity (more)...

The writers of "Modern Family" are exceedingly proud of the show's 14 Emmy nominations. But if they had their way, the show would have at least one more.
Co-creator Steven Levitan and five of the show's writer-producers sang the praises of star Ed O'Neill Monday night (July 19) at a Paley Center "Inside the Writers Room" event. According to them, O'Neill led the cast in deciding that they all should submit themselves as supporting actors or actresses -- but he was the only one of the adult cast members not to score a nomination.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

Most Christmas specials have some sort of lesson to impart to their viewers, whether that's Rudolph accepting who is he (light-up red nose and all) or Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang learning the true (non-commercialized) meaning of Christmas. It's rare for me to add something to my yearly rotation of Christmas specials, but every now and then something new (2008's Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special) manages to become a new tradition. Traditions and lessons were the main thrust of last night's phenomenal episode of ABC's Modern Family ("Undeck the Halls"), written by Dan O'Shannon and directed by Randall Einhorn, which has made the leap onto my yearly holiday special rotation after a fantastic installment that threaded together three separate storylines into one perfect portrait about the blessings and curses of the holiday season. As Jay struggles to recreate his family's Christmas traditions and encounters resistance from Gloria and Manny (who...

Ah, that staple of prime-time comedy: the dysfunctional family. So many sitcoms take a swing at this formula and crash and burn; not Modern Family, though. Modern Family has become synonymous with laughing out loud, the show is seriously that funny. Beside the genius talent making it all work, the family itself is a definite refreshing take on the formula. If you're not watching it, watch it – even if comedy isn't your thing you'll love it. Here are a few clips from tonight's episode to entice you further.

"Come Fly with Me" – After some nudging, Jay begrudgingly takes Phil out to fly his new model airplane — that is until a maneuver goes awry. Meanwhile, when Gloria drops Manny off to play with Luke, she ends up volunteering to take Alex dress shopping,...

I can't tell you how incredibly excited I am about the return of ABC's fantastic comedy series Better Off Ted this summer. It's especially true this summer when the season seems to be positively overflowing with network castoffs as the broadcasters burn off remaining unaired installments of their sadly canceled series. (Just take a look at Saturday nights to see what I mean.) But despite its place on the schedule this summer, ABC's winsome Better Off Ted isn't canceled; in fact, it earned a slot on the network's midseason lineup thanks to some goodwill from Steve McPherson and the programmers at the Alphabet. But there's still a handful of unaired episodes from the series' first season, which means that Ted fans will be getting a fresh batch of Veridian goodness over the next few weeks. Tonight's episode ("You Are the Boss of Me"), written by Dan O'Shannon, is a fantastic...
