As comedian Will Ferrell walked across the magnificent stage of The Kennedy Center to accept the greatest honor an America funny person can receive, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, something happened that made us all remember why he is getting this prestigious honor. The award instantly slipped from Will’s hilarious fingers, shattering this legendary humorist’s bust all over the floor. An obvious gag, that was so damn fitting to what Will represents in the history of the art of doing silly stuff. Without breaking character for a second, Will hilariously tries to pick up the pieces as the world just sat back and laughed… but not laughing at him, we were laughing with him. The appeal of Will Ferrell comes from his innocent “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude that elevates simple stupid jokes to performance art. As Mr. Ferrell once said, “What I...

In 1998, A-list actor Michael J. Fox publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed seven years earlier with Parkinson’s disease, which impairs the body’s nervous and motor systems. At the time, the most notable people living with Parkinson’s were boxer Muhammad Ali and U.S. attorney general Janet Reno, but it has since impacted other figures such as Alan Alda, Neil Diamond, and Linda Ronstadt. More than 150 years after the disease was given a name, there remains no known cause for it, but Fox has devoted the last two decades of his life to answering that question and advancing treatment for people like him. In acknowledgment of these efforts, the recently retired performer has been announced as the next recipient of the film academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Barely 15 minutes of Mrs. Doubtfire has passed before the wife of the manic, cloying man-child at the center of the developing farce demands a divorce, and we can only puzzle over what took her so long.
Granted, the wife is no prize either, a humorless, uptight career woman caricature rarely seen these days outside Lifetime holiday TV-movies. How she and so many other dated and tired tropes from a dated and tired 1993 movie made it past so many talented Broadway creators through so many years of stage development is a mystery more interesting than anything that shouts itself into existence over two and a half hours nightly at Broadway’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
The amount of talent behind the high-spirited, very sporadically fun Mrs. Doubtfire is undeniable, from the creators of the low-key brilliant Something’s Rotten!, the legendary director Jerry Zaks, and Mvp star Rob McClure, whose quicksilver vocal...

In the past month, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have snuck back into the headlines. April 5th marked the 27th anniversary of Cobain’s death, an Nft of Cobain’s last photo shoot was put on the market, and Nirvana as a group were hit with a copyright-infringement lawsuit for alleged unauthorized use of a 1949 illustration on their merch. As announced this week, six strands of Cobain’s hair, cut in 1989, will be part of a rock-memorabilia auction.

Ten days before Christmas 1979, 33-year-old Arthur McDuffie, a Marine and a manager at a life insurance company, had already wrapped presents for his two young daughters, but he never got the chance to deliver them. In the early hours of December 17th, a group of cops beat McDuffie into a coma after a bizarre motorcycle chase through downtown Miami, with one officer cracking McDuffie’s skull with a Kel-Lite flashlight, a witness later testified. McDuffie died in the hospital four days later.

Culturally and aesthetically, the 1990s were pretty absurd. The decade began with the advent of the internet and ended with the fear that modern society itself would collapse with the start of a new century. Grunge was introduced, rap rivalries led to tremendous losses, third-wave feminism took hold, hair accessories got quirkier, and the president had a major sex scandal. And yet, the '90s were also really "normal."
Normal compared to what? Now? Well, yes, clearly, but looking back, it seemed as though society at the time placed greater importance on maintaining a veneer of stability and normalcy following the more drastic changes and events of the 1980s. In response, the decade was marked by pre-woke political correctness, inoffensive home decor, and a fashion sense that essentially set the blueprint for normcore. That placid suburbia of the '90s is exquisitely captured on Little Fires Everywhere.

Explosive devices and/or suspicious packages were sent to a number of major Democratic Party-linked figures this week, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, philanthropist and financier George Soros, former DNC chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-ca), and former CIA chief John Brennan.
The offices of the San Diego Union-Tribune were also evacuated after “suspicious packages” were found, and a device was removed from the Time Warner center in Manhattan, home to CNN.
Early news stories drew immediate connections to aggressive and irresponsible rhetoric from the right, including from President Trump.

Tonight on Manhunt: Unabomber, actor Jane Lynch makes an appearance as Attorney General Janet Reno. In our exclusive clip, Lynch stars opposite Chris Noth as Don Ackerman, the Bay Area Divisional Head of the FBI who supervised the Unabomber Task Force. Despite Akerman’s urging to go forward and publish the manifesto penned by the Unabomber — Ted Kaczynski — Reno expresses concern that this may become another disaster like the 1993 siege at Waco (Texas) where her decision to use tear gas and the government’s use of force was blamed for many unnecessary deaths. In the Discovery series Manhunt: Unabomber, Sam Worthington plays real-life FBI profiler Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald, who joins the Unabom Task Force in 1995 in the bureau’s hunt to find the Unabomber. Two years later, following the high-profile arrest of Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany), Fitz is brought back into the fold to bring him to justice. Growing up in Australia at the time, the Surrey-born Worthington recalled conversations he had with his father about the magnitude of the case, which had reached the land Down Under.
“When I mentioned the story to my dad, he said, ‘I knew the Unabomber case. That was quite prolific.’ But when we talked about it, we realized we only knew the basics,” Worthington, rocking a faux-hawk, tells Et during a sit-down interview at a Beverly Hills hotel in late July. “We knew the iconic sketch and we knew that his brother [David Kaczynski] turned him in. Jane Lynch is a comedic force. But even her funniest onscreen performances are rooted in a commitment to the truth of human nature, a quality that carries over into her more recent dramatic work. The three-time Emmy winner has created indelible characters of all sorts -- most notably as Sue Sylvester on Glee -- over the course of nearly three decades in Hollywood. But perhaps none have loomed as large in the popular imagination as U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, whom the actress portrays in Discovery Channel’s latest scripted project, Manhunt: Unabomber.
The eight-episode anthology series, created by Andrew Sodroski, follows the FBI’s pursuit of Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany) and his ultimate capture based on breakthrough linguistic evidence assembled by agent Jim Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington). Here at Et, we're obsessed with a lot of things -- and for the week of July 31 to Aug. 8, this is what we're most excited about:
Why We're Obsessed With 'Manhunt: Unabomber'
One of the longest searches in history for someone on the America's Most Wanted list came to a close after 17 years when the FBI captured the man known as the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. Rather than tell the story from the point of view of Kaczynski (Paul Bettany), Discovery's Manhunt: Unabomber will focus on FBI agent and criminal profiler James "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington), who pioneers the use of forensic linguistics to identify and ultimately capture the serial bomber. The riveting eight-episode series will touch on aspects of the investigation many have doubtless forgotten or never knew. During an interview with Et, director Greg Yaitanes explained that the show was not centered around the question whether Fitz would catch Kaczynski, but rather...

Over 20 years after helming an episode of America’s Most Wanted -- yes, that long-running docuseries hosted by John Walsh -- director Greg Yaitanes is back in the true crime world following his transition into prestige TV with House, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and most recently, Cinemax’s Banshee and Quarry. Now, he’s the showrunner of Discovery Channel’s anticipated new anthology series, Manhunt, which debuts its first season, Unabomber, on Tuesday, Aug. 1.
The first season follows FBI agent and criminal profiler James “Fitz” Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington) as he pioneers new forensic linguistics to find and ultimately capture Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany), the nation’s deadliest serial bomber in history. The 8-episode series written by Andrew Sodroski (scribe of Holland, Michigan, which topped Hollywood’s 2013 Black List) offers a perspective of the FBI’s hunt not often seen.

Well I forgot to mention the guest stars. Tina Fey was a prominent part of "Black-Eyed, Please" and this week the task of amusing the audience was left up to....Janet Reno?!?
I respect the former Attorney General as much as the next person but isn't this reference waaaay too dated. It wasn't even like there was much for her to do, or even a real connection between her and the plot.
The more amusing parts of tonight's episode came from simple jokes referencing classic Simpsons gags. The show really does rely on nostalgia more often than not and that couldn't be clearer than when Bart motioned to his courtroom caricaturist (an...

...aaaand the new MSNBC primetime host is Chris Hayes. I'll admit, I've mixed feelings about the development. I'm not thrilled about giving up Hayes' weekend show, Up, but I do love the idea of combining Hayes with Rachel Maddow. The combination of Hayes and Maddow as the majority of MSNBC's prime time slot could end up making a strong argument that it is possible for cable news to offer programming that's informative, instead of the ridiculous gimmicks, opinionated bluster and scandal-chasing that's found too often elsewhere.
One of the things I enjoy about Up with Chris Hayes is that Hayes uses the forum to function as an example of what other shows could accomplish if they cared, like the way Up is much more diverse than other Sunday shows.

She has dozens of Washington Monument figurines. She keeps framed photos of Nancy Pelosi, Condoleezza Rice, and Janet Reno in her office. She once fashioned a Geraldine Ferraro action figure out of a photograph and a popsicle stick. In other words, Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) loves the heck out of government. So it seems fitting that in the season 5 premiere of Parks and Recreation (NBC, Thursday, 9:30 p.m.), she journeys to Washington, D.C., where she visits with her beau, Ben (Adam Scott), who’s working on a congressional campaign, and takes care of some official Pawnee business.

Will Ferrell's been gone from "SNL" for 10 years now. I don't know how we've kept it together since then, as Americans. He was the closest thing to this country's Kim Jong-Il: Everyone would cry in the street if he died, and sunglasses made him look like something in one of the saltwater tanks at Sea World.
Plus, he defined our moral fiber there for a few years. If there was a Will Ferrell Constitution, it would almost exclusively tell us that it's awesome to yell at helpless dogs, and that you desperately need to get off the damn shed. That was the turn of the century in a nutshell.
Well, thank god, Will Ferrell's back on Saturday hosting "SNL." We get a reminder of the good ol' days, when he could talk about the moon as a food product for five minutes and that would be considered a complete sketch.

We were pretty excited to see Will Ferrell back on the Saturday Night Live stage…and he didn't let us down. The SNL alum who killed when it came to impersonating the likes of George Bush, Janet Reno and more during his tenure on the show, returned to his old stomping grounds to host the late night laugher for the third time, kicking off his stint with a Mother's Day shoutout straight from his "brain place." I know what I'm about to say could cause some controversy, but I love my mom!" Ferrell said in his opening monologue. "There ya go TMZ, that's for you." And then when he went on to try to honor his mom with a Mother's Day tribute, using his own...

Many people have a crazy passionate conservative older relative who sends semi-coherent emails ranting about the traitorous crimes of President Obama and his minions. For those who don’t and feel like they’re missing out, there’s Ted Nugent. In 2012, Uncle Ted is more famous for offensive insults than anything he accomplished musically. Tomorrow, according to Glenn Beck’s website, The Blaze, he’ll meet with the U.S. Secret Service after he hurled a veiled threat at President Obama during a recent NRA convention in St. Louis. “If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will...

I take my recapping duties seriously, but really, do you expect me to remember anything that had happened in "Saturday Night GLEEver" once I saw Santana strutting down the hall in her white suit singing "Stayin' Alive"? Good luck with that.
My brain might have short-circuited, but according to my notes and the record of my reactions I left strewn over Twitter, something good finally came out of The Glee Project – and it's not just the fact that it's finally possible to use the phrase "More Unique" and have it be grammatically correct. With the debut of Wade/Unique (Alex Newell) singing "Boogie Shoes" in a pair of size 13 glitter platform sandals, we got pretty much the only performance of the night that felt infused with true disco energy.

Michael Moriarty, who starred in such classic films as Who’ll Stop the Rain and Pale Rider, exiled himself to Canada in 1995, following a nasty confrontation with U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno in a Washington, D.C. hotel room. Moriarty was invited along with network television executives and producers to hear Reno’s views on censorship of TV violence. Law and Order, one of the least violent shows on television, was cited as a major offender. Incensed by Reno's campaign to “forcibly end violence on television and trample on rights of free expression as guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution,” Moriarty quit the series and left the U.S. in protest. He has been a landed immigrant in Canada ever since. Why the fateful encounter with Reno led to a radical (and seemingly overnight) transformation of Moriarty’s...

ABC’s upcoming sitcom Work It has only released a minute-and-a-half preview to the public, but already it’s blazing a trail for the next phase of television humor. As you can see from the above title card, this show has everything from wacky, miss-aligned fonts to the always hilarious man-legs in heels. But that’s not all. Thanks to an envelope-pushing concept and one-liners that would make Henny Youngman jealous, this trailer has proven that the world is finally ready for another cross-dressing comedy.
As you just saw, Work It follows two manly men who decide to pose as women so they can get hired in the fast-paced, jet-setting world of ... cosmetics sales.
As the promo’s catchphrase clearly states: "desperate Times… desperate Measures." You know ABC means business because the word "measures" is capitalized and underlined. The marketing team behind Work It clearly knows that the modern TV...

Subject: Will Farrell, 42-year old American actor and (alleged) comedian
Date of Assessment: May 11, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: "SNL"
Negative Buzzwords: Played out, overexposed
The Case: As an upfront disclosure, I must admit that Will Ferrell is not really my kind of comedian although, in his "SNL" capacity, he was actually pretty funny at times during the Janet Reno, George W. Bush, Alex Trebek, ridiculous male cheerleader, and even the Roxbury brother skits. As far as post-"SNL" careers go, Ferrell has enjoyed a pretty extended run. While he's no Bill Murray or Steve Martin, well, who is? The thing is, comedians rarely last too terribly long, no matter their shtick. To survive, they simply have to be able to revamp their images periodically, and Ferrell has already tried his hand a drama a few times in movies such as Stranger Than Fiction and Winter Passing. This weekend, he'll attempt to take...

If you're anything like me, you've been watching a few actors like a hawk, alternately mesmerized and horrified by the progression of their transformations from man to woman. Unlike people who make a conscious choice to dress like women or surgically change their sex, there seem to be some men who simply morph as they age. Some are easily predictable and some are a surprise; there is one actor on this list that has clearly been headed to ladyland his whole life and there was just nothing he could do about it. But if there is one suggestion I would offer all these men, it is this: Do something with your hair. The Farrah was created in the 70s and there it should stay. And never mind that whole wavy, feathered thing--at a certain point the long hair has to either go or if you're inclined to go with the hippie godfather thing,...

We're back in our time machine with the broken dial, and this time we land in 1993.
What Was the Story?
Bill Clinton began his presidency, and Monica Lewinsky had yet to be hired as a White House intern. The internet was just a few years away, and things were looking pretty good... mostly. Janet Reno was selected as Attorney General, thereby insuring many hours of spoofing on 'Saturday Night Live' (the cast of which included Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, David Spade and Chris Rock). NBC’s Outlaw has put filming new episodes on hold. Friday night is tough, and if it can’t improve on those ratings, it’s probably done for. The bright side? For all the already canceled and nearly canceled shows this fall, we still haven’t lost a gay character!
One small grace coming out of the epidemic of suicides: Exodus has decided it might be too much to hold their Day of Truth, the opposition to Day of Silence. Could the ex-gay folks have finally found their hearts? Or are they worried how that would look?
Showtime has renewed The Real L Word for another year. I’ve never watched it, so I don’t know if this is good news or not.
I can’t really make up my mind about this article. The text itself isn’t bad, but the title, Homophobia Hurts Straight Men Too seems just a little indulgent.

John McCain, in what is assumed to be an attempt to woo feminist Hillary Clinton supporters, nominated an inexperienced first-term governor of Alaska as his running mate. In state-wide office less than two years, Sarah Palin includes in her resume a term as mayor of a small town, and a stint on her local PTA.
But wait, he says. When you hear her story, you’ll love her!
As an aspiring novelist and a voracious reader, I love stories. I love well-developed, idiosyncratic characters, and I enjoy imagining their lives. My favorite comics have great characters whose human foibles make their adventures more exciting.
The Creeper? A great character. Rorschach? A great character. Peter Parker? A great character. I’m not prepared to vote for any of them. Aside from being fictional, they do not display the qualities I look for in elected officials.

Pop superstar Michael Jackson's troubled year has concluded on an even more sour note - he's been branded 2002's biggest loser. The Thriller singer has beat the likes of George Michael, Robert Blake and 'N Sync star Lance Bass to the top spot in a chart put together by American magazine People. Jackson, whose most recent controversy stemmed from him holding his baby son Prince Michael II over the balcony of a German hotel last month, has also come under attack for his branding Sony boss Tommy Mottola a racist, taking his two oldest children to the zoo wearing veils and his apparently-disintegrating nose. The full top 10 is as follows: 1. Michael Jackson; 2. George Michael; 3. Trent Lott; 4. Lance Bass; 5. Liza Minnelli & David Gest; 6. Princess Anne; 7. Janet Reno; 8. Phil Donahue; 9. Rob Lowe; 10. The real-life President of The United States of America is facing a tough battle with one of the most popular fictional ones ever, as Martin Sheen takes on George W. Bush. Sheen, who plays President Josiah Bartlett in the acclaimed TV drama The West Wing, will lend some star power to Janet Reno's bid to unseat Florida Governor Jeb Bush, whose own campaign is getting a little help from the real U.S. president, his brother George W. Sheen will join the former U.S. attorney general for three days of campaigning and fund-raising in West Palm Beach, Miami, Tampa and Orlando starting Friday. But Jeb Bush's campaign spokesman Todd Harris poked fun at longtime Democrat Sheen's support, saying. "This is what you have to do when you can't get a real president for your campaign." Polls show Reno leading the race to become Florida's Democratic gubernatorial candidate. If she wins the September primary, she will face the popular Republican incumbent in the November general election.
