A redemption tale weaving drama and psychological thriller, Foumbi’s film follows Marie, a reclusive African refugee (Babetida Sadjo) whose quiet existence in a sleepy mountain village in the south of France is overturned when she meets the charismatic new parish priest (Souleymane Sy Savane), who happens to be the warlord that slaughtered her family and recruited her as a child.

Played just this year and last in a pair of campy Christina Ricci movies for the Lifetime Channel, famous axe murderer Lizzie Borden is also heading to the cinema screen in yet another project. Belgian director Pieter Van Hees (Waste Land) will direct an as-yet-untitled psychological thriller based on Borden's sordid story, with Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart both in line to star."Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks," goes the rhyme. "When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41."Borden was actually acquitted of the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts, but she remains the prime suspect for Bordenologists who continue to study the case. Other potential perps that have been suggested include the Bordens' live-in maid Bridget Sullivan, Lizzie's sister Emma, her illegitimate half-brother William, and her uncle John Morse. In the new film, Sevigny will take the role of Lizzie,...

Diffusion is the name of the game in Waste Land, a brooding police procedural from Belgium that depends more on its pervasive ambience than plot twists. Actually, it's probably a disserve to describe the newest film by writer/director Pieter Van Hees (Left Bank) as a procedural, because that implies a set order of events -- a murder, an investigation, a neat resolution -- and, too often, little more. Certainly, Waste Land includes those expected elements, but it's far less interested in the game than the players, primarily homicide detective Leo Woeste (Jeremy Renier). Judging by outward appearances, Leo has it all: a respected position in the police force, as well as a supportive marriage mate in Katrien (Natali Broods) and a bright and healthy young...

Fear in a Handful of Dust: Van Hees Completes Trilogy with Dark Metaphor
Belgian director Pieter Van Hees completes his trilogy that began with 2008’s Left Bank, the thematically connected “Anatomy of Love and Pain,” with the third chapter, Waste Land, exploring the idea of ‘soul’ with a neo-noir tinged mystery concerning the unraveling of a relationship and the loss of love. So named for T.S. Eliot’s famed 1922 poem, Van Hees has crafted a surreal nightmare that contains some profound mutations concerning historical atrocities from Europe’s colonialist past, of which Belgium also figured into. A director whose previous titles haven’t been able to tap into the offbeat English speaking audiences that are sure to embrace his bizarre flavor, the international renown of star Jeremie Renier should afford Van Hees’ latest work a higher visibility.

Belgian director Pieter Van Hees is a slippery one. He made his feature debut with The Left Bank, a dark supernaturally charged thriller before moving on to clever action-comedy Dirty Mind. The tonal shift between the films was dramatic - and impressive - and made all the more surprising by the fact that Van Hees insists the two films, as different as they are, are the first two parts of a thematic trilogy that he completes now with Waste Land.An ultra dark crime thriller - think the recent wave of Nordic Noir, but grottier - Van Hees' latest is a selection of both Toronto and Fantastic Fest and while we missed the trailer when it first arrived a few days back we've spotted it now...

Over the years, the Toronto International Film Festival has grown into one of the most well-known stops on the circuit, with numerous Oscar winners and other critically acclaimed films making their world premiere at Tiff, and others making their North American or International premiere at the fest. Thus, the films that end up at the festival have also become a source of interest to film fans. With the 2014 incarnation of Tiff making their first wave of announcements already, they have released a second list of the films that will be screening at Tiff 2014, which includes works from Frederick Wiseman, Joshua Oppenheimer, Michael Winterbottom, Jean-Luc Godard, Adam Wingard, and Sion Sono. The full list of films, as well as their categories, can be found below.

Earlier today we brought you the full lineup of Tiff 2014's Midnight Madness programme, and we're back with the 11 films that comprise the fest's Vanguard lineup, which includes Alleluia, Shrew's Next, Spring, and the latest from Takashi Miike.
A few of the films on this list don't fall in the pure horror category, but we've included them as well just because they sound so damn intriguing!
From the Press Release:
The Toronto International Film Festival's Vanguard programme seduces audiences with a sensory experience full of mystery and boundary-busting madness with bold international films that walk the razor’s edge. International programmer Colin Geddes brings together the work of some of the most audacious auteurs in the world to present a cinematic adventure that takes audiences to the dark, dangerous places that both unnerve yet intrigue them.

The Toronto International Film Festival announced its selections for the 2014 Masters, Vanguard, Midnight Madness, and documentaries programs on Tuesday.
The festival, in its 39th year, kicks off Sept. 4 with David Dobkin’s The Judge, a drama starring Robert Downey, Jr. as a big-time lawyer who returns home to defend his father (Robert Duvall) in court. While a certain “freshness” might be lacking in the Midnight Madness programme, the Vanguard section (and Wavelengths to be unveiled next month) is where there might be more cerebral bang for the buck and programmer Colin Geddes has a nice canvas to paint on with the bunch announced below. Running down the list we find a must see in the Cannes sensation Alleluia (Fabrice Du Welz), which had the entire Ioncinema team in awestruck mode, and then we have Berberian Sound Studio‘s Peter Strickland breaking out the world premiere for The Duke of Burgundy (see pic above). After penning several Ulrich Seidl items over the years (Import/Export, Paradise Trilogy), Veronika Franz might outclass The Shining for most creepiest young child twin set with Severin Fiala for the Venice Film Fest selected Goodnight Mommy. Takashi Miike is naturally invited back to the fest with his latest, and Spring, which...

Left Bank
Stars: Eline Kuppens, Matthias Schoienaerts, Tom De Wispalaere, Marilou Mermans | Written by Christophe Dirickx, Dimitri Karakatsanis, Pieter Van Hees | Directed by Pieter Van Hees
Quite often I find the state of the modern horror movie intensely depressing, with far too many flaccid remakes, sequels and shiny nonsense that lack tension, pace and good scares. However once again a European film has restored my faith and brought a shiver of disquiet on a bright summer morning.
Left Bank (Linkeroever) is the first full length movie by Pieter Van Hees, which he intends to be part of a trilogy called Anatomy of Love and Pain, focuses on 22 year old aspiring athlete Marie (Eline Kuppens). Freshly qualified for a European championship event, she is devastated when a mystery virus stops her from training, but finds solace in the arms of a young archer, Bobby (Matthias Schoienaerts). When a blurb pledges "a nightmare of unimaginable terror", loins are girded for the worst. But when, after an hour, the worst terror to occur is an evil black powder issuing from the main character's genitals, even the most chicken-livered cushion-hugger wants gratuitous blood-letting. Can somebody here die please! Pieter Van Hees's Left Bank is an arthouse tension-builder that just takes too long to deliver. By the time Marie (Eline Kuppens) realises her new boyfriend intends to sacrifice her to a kind of Elephant Man beelzebub, you no longer care if her genitals turn into a giant razor-fanged serpent that bites her head off. I'll have my terror before I fall asleep, ta.

This year's Guadalajara Film Festival (Ficg - Festival International de Cine Guadalajara) has so many events, sections and sidebars that one barely knows where to begin. Established in 1986 it now has an attendence of about 66,000 with industry attendence at about 3,000 all of whom are interested in interacting with one another and with filmmakers in an extremely friendly upbeat environment. Its festival has a competition for Mexican and Iberoamerican fiction, docs and shorts, French features with a focus on Agnes Varda, animation, alternative, childrens, and of course gala sections. It has a film market, numerous panels and has incorporated several key international initiatives.

Chicago – “Left Bank” centers on` a woman whose apartment appears to be above a black hole, or a pit or something dark and deep like that. The Belgian horror outing (which has gone straight to DVD in the United States after playing in Chicago at the EU Film Fest) isn’t nearly as dumb as that synopsis makes it out to be, but in the end, that’s actually more of criticism than a compliment.
DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0
The laughably bad movies in the horror genre and even the “Saw”-inspired examples of torture porn at least succeed in provoking a reaction out of people. Pieter Van Hees’s film is too tasteful to breed disgust and too thin and slow-building to nurture suspense, let alone terror. At best, watching “Left Bank” is like riding on a bus late at night next to a mumbling drunk. You feel a little uncomfortable from time to time,...

About halfway through Pieter Van Hees' Left Bank, I stopped the movie, made lunch, watched Notting Hill (no, that's not the sound of my credibility darting away), did some laundry, made dinner, downloaded a couple episodes of The Big Bang Theory, and went to bed.
Such was the effect of Left Bank -- I felt no urgency, no pressing desire to learn about what happens to its characters, what evil is plaguing them. My spine did not tingle, nor did I find myself scooching to the edge of my seat.
Marie (the relatively unknown Eline Kuppens) is a devoted track junkie. She runs hard and does little else, until she collapses from an immune infection, leaving her to have to forfeit an upcoming championship. The break from training allows her to take up a relationship with a young archer named Bobby (Matthias Schoenaerts). She moves out of her mother's house,...

It's another awesome week for DVD releases gang. First up is Pieter Van Hees' Belgium thriller, Left Bank (review, amazon), and dark slow boiler that our own Hal McDermot said was "good at combining the familiar with the unsettling."
Then of course we have a couple of apocalyptic flicks, one classic and one soon-to-be. Richard Stanley's 1990 Pa android shocker, Hardware (exclusive clip, amazon), gets an overdue royal treatment from Severin who have lovingly restored the film and stuffed it with extras. As soon as my copy arrives I'll be posting a review so stay tuned. The soon-to-be classic is of course Kyle Rankin's comic tinged bug-pocalypse romp, Infestation (review, amazon). This is one of those film that does so much with so little and has so much fun doing it that you'd feel like kind of a jerk for dissing its shortcomings. Don't let the bad DVD...

Film festivals are often a conumdrum for me because I sometimes wonder how they get started and, more to the point, who picks the films that get shown at them. My problem is that the films selected for many of the festivals don’t usually seem all that appealing (at least to me) and are often a collection of “art for art’s sake” films overwhelmed by their own sense of self-importance.
Fortunately, I don’t have this problem with the Fantastic Fest in Austin, which runs from September 24th to October 1st. The films selected for this festival represent an eclectic mix of genres and filmmakers and what I consider to be some of the most interesting, innovative and creative films being produced today. Sure, they’re not all potential Hollywood blockbusters, nor are they for everyone, but they are all pretty much guaranteed to be interesting, entertaining and in their own way,...

Ok, so I'm lazy.. I copy and pasted the press release, which is after the break, and we have reviews of quite a few of the films playing, including White Lightnin', Left Bank, Blood River, Cryptic, Deadgirl, The Horsemen, I Sell the Dead.. with Kaifeck Murder coming soon (once I can figure out what to write).
Movies I'm really interested in seeing: French Pa flick Mutants, Smash Cut, Possibility of an Island, Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, and Thirst.
But alas, I won't be there. Instead, a friend of ours will be providing some reviews for the week he is there, so everyone give a big thanks to DirtyRobot! Woop!
Check out the film greatness after the break! Oh, and there's more to come...

While we wait for the schedule for Fantasia 2009 to be finalized, we did receive a couple of press release announcing the fest's line-up, and per usual, those of you who are planning to attend are in for one helluva genre extravaganza.
First up is a bit of news about the fest's extended schedule: Due to a veritable deluge of feature presentations, Fantasia is extending its 13th edition for two extra days and will therefore be taking place from July 9th to the 29th at Concordia University’s Hall Theatre. As North America’s largest genre film festival, Fantasia will once again make good on its promise to deliver diversity, innovation, entertainment, food for thought and a good dose of eccentric and biting humour.
Next is a message from Fantasia's Co-Director of International Programming, Mitch Davis, highlighting some of this year’s spotlights:
