Jon Stewart detailed the hypocrisy of conservative media’s condemnation of cancel culture on Monday’s episode of The Daily Show, pointing out that their “boy king” Trump has cancelled numerous opponents who have dared to speak against him.
The late-night host opened his monologue with news of the backlash Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker garnered after delivering a speech to Benedictine College’s 2024 graduate class in which he encouraged women to embrace their roles as wives and homemakers rather than putting their degrees to use. Some in the right wing appear to be suffering from Taylor Derangement Syndrome as Maga supporters and Donald Trump himself believe the NFL, Taylor Swift and NFL beau Travis Kelce are in cahoots with Democrats to win Joe Biden the presidential election. Chris Christie on Sunday dismissed the unfounded rumors as “ridiculous” and “crazy.”
“Outrageous. Ridiculous,” the former New Jersey governor and former GOP hopeful said after Meet the Press host Kristen Welker asked for his thoughts on the wild accusations. “Look, Taylor Swift is one of the great American success stories.

Today is the latest deadline for campaigns and committees to disclose donors, offering a glimpse at who is putting up huge sums in the 2024 elections, which may end up being the most expensive ever.

Former President Donald Trump refused to sign a loyalty oath in Illinois, pledging he would not advocate overthrowing the state or federal government.
The former president opted not to sign the oath when he and his campaign registered for the Illinois primary ballot.
Trump signed this oath in 2016 and 2020.
Both Joe Biden and Ron DeSantis signed the oath. In doing so, they confirmed that they do not directly or indirectly support overthrowing, the governments of the United States or Illinois.
However, some of Trump’s Republican rivals, like Nikki Haley and Chris Christie, did not sign either.
According to Illinois law, presidential candidates who desire to be on the state’s March 19, 2024, primary ballot needed to turn in nominating petitions to the state board of elections on January 5.

As Donald Trump was about to step on stage on Sunday for another rally to tout the endorsement of another former rival, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley was about 30 miles south in New Hampshire, at a rally at Exeter High School, where a celebrity figure and daytime fixture was lending her support: Judge Judy.
On stage to a room full of enthusiastic supporters, Haley called Judy Sheindlin, whose daily courtroom show made her one of the most famous women on TV, a “trailblazer” who is “tough” and “speaks hard truths” and “doesn’t mince words.”
“I will tell you for all of those endorsements you talk about, those are the endorsements that matter, the ones where they’re going to tell you the truth even if you don’t want to hear it, and they are going to tell you why, and it’s a combination of brains and heart,” Haley said.

As former Un Ambassador Nikki Haley took the stage at CNN’s town hall in New Hampshire, her chief rival in the state’s primary took to another interview on Fox News.
It was yet another bit of counter-programming on the part of Trump, as well as Fox News, which billed Sean Hannity’s interview as the former president’s first since his victory in the Iowa caucuses. Last week, as Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis participated in CNN’s pre-Iowa debate, Fox News did a town hall with Trump.
Shortly after Haley took the stage, host Jake Tapper asked Haley about Trump’s dog whistle attacks on her, including advancing a conspiracy theory that questioned her eligibility to be president as the child of Indian immigrants. Trump also referred to her as “Nimrada,” misspelling her given first name, Nimarata, clearly reviving birtherism and the “otherness” of his opponents.

Media-wise, the 2024 presidential election crosses the official starting line with debate season, and this cycle the contenders on the Republican side, including a multiple-indicted former Potus, are looking to beat Democrat Joe Biden and take over the White House. But first they have to take on one another.
For the candidates, debates are a way to score points against a rival, stand out from the field or define a campaign that’s heretofore been rudderless.

Former President Donald Trump‘s son, Donald Trump Jr., took center stage in Iowa to deliver a speech that took jabs at his father’s political rivals, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida), as well as President Joe Biden‘s son, Hunter Biden.
Trump’s legal obligations required him to rely on surrogates like Don Jr. to convey his message to Iowa voters. Donald Jr. headlined an event organized by the Bull Moose Conservative Club at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale, a political group that caters to individuals aged 45 and under.
With evident delight, Donald Jr. discussed former Gov. Donald Trump decisively won the Iowa caucuses on Monday with his closest rivals languishing far behind, a crucial victory that reinforces the former president’s grip on his party at the outset of the GOP’s 2024 nomination fight.
It was not immediately clear who would emerge as the second-place finisher, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis or former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. Caucus voters endured life-threatening cold and dangerous driving conditions to participate in meetings that unfolded in hundreds of schools, churches and community centers across the state.
The results are just the first in what will be a monthslong effort for Trump to secure the GOP nomination a third consecutive time. But the victory sends an unmistakable message to the Republican Party that the nomination is Trump’s to lose and crystalizes the challenge facing his GOP opponents.

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) said he would vote for President Joe Biden “in a heartbeat” if he were to face former President Donald Trump in a rematch this year.
As one of Trump’s most vocal conservative critics, Kinzinger’s decision underscored his commitment to principles that transcend party lines, even as he remains a member of the Republican Party despite Trump’s influence.
Kinzinger had previously expressed support for former Gov. Chris Christie (R-New Jersey) in the Republican primary and commended him for his honesty and commitment to truth. However, as Christie has suspended his campaign, Kinzinger’s allegiance has shifted.
In an appearance on The Source, Kinzinger was asked about his plans for the future.
Kinzinger responded, “Nothing.” He continued, “Look, I think it’s highly likely that it’s gonna be Biden against Trump. And in that case, there is no question who I would support.

Update: So much of this debate was about repetitive sparring between two Donald Trump alternatives, and the one-on-one match up made the event seem longer than others this cycle.
The debate had its moments where issues and philosophies were at the forefront, but Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis were so determined to go after each other that they lost their places at certain points. At one point DeSantis identified her as the former “governor of California.” DeSantis debated Gavin Newsom in November.
There were moments when they did attack the front runner, Donald Trump, albeit with far less of the determination of Chris Christie, who exited the race earlier on Wednesday.
Haley said that Trump would have to “answer for” what happened on that date. DeSantis bashed Trump for his “word vomit” social media post in which he said he would terminate the Constitution.

The Republican Accountability Pac has created a new ad that calls Donald Trump a “dictator.”
The ad, called “Dictator Donald,” was produced by a Republican group that stands opposed to Trump.
The “Dictator Donald” was posted on YouTube over two weeks after Trump announced that he wanted to be a dictator on “the first day” of a new Trump administration.
The ad warns Americans in the starkest terms about a second Trump term.
The ad starts with a recording of an alarm clock going off at 6:00 a.m.
Next, the ad shows a clip of former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) shown inside an old TV, warning Americans during an interview.
“This isn’t hyperbole,” she claimed. “A vote for Donald Trump may mean the last election that you ever get to vote in.”
“He’s a threat to democracy,” Trump’s Secretary of Defense Mark Esper states in another clip.

Donald Trump continued his push on Saturday to win the Republican presidential nomination with a pair of caucus rallies in Iowa, beginning at the Dmacc Conference Center in Newton and then culminating in Clinton. His speeches come on the third anniversary of Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and a little more than a week before the Republican Iowa caucus commences on Jan. 15.
As for commemorating the solemn anniversary of Jan. 6, Trump lauded the insurrectionists, while labeling some immigrants as “terrorists” and prisoners and gang members. “And terrorists are coming in also.

Chris Christie declared that he would not pardon Donald Trump if he is convicted of a crime.
On January 3, Christie made an appearance on The View during which one of the show’s cohosts, Joy Behar, noted that his opponents, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, had already pledged to pardon Trump. She wondered if Christie would do the same.
“No, no, no, no,” he replied.
“One of the reasons is, as a governor, I issued pardons,” Christie stated. “And one of the things you have to do is look at the person. The person has to accept responsibility for what they did.”
“Do you think Donald Trump will ever accept responsibility for anything he did,” the former federal prosecutor asked. “It’d be really the easiest pardon decision I would ever have to make as president. You don’t accept responsibility? Too bad. Go to jail.

Updated with debate field set: CNN said Tuesday that former President Donald Trump, former Un ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have qualified for their January 10 debate in Iowa.
But only Haley and DeSantis will be participating in the event, as Trump will be doing some counter-programming: a town hall on Fox News. The CNN debate and the Fox News town hall will begin at the same time, 9 p.m. Et.
CNN’s Dana Bash and Jake Tapper will moderate the debate; Fox News’ Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum will moderate the town hall.
On social media, Vivek Ramaswamy bashed CNN for its more stringent debate criteria, as participants had a 10% polling threshold to qualify. Ramaswamy and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie did not make the cut for the Iowa debate despite qualifying for the four previous primary debates.

In a radio interview on Thursday, former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-South Carolina) addressed the controversy with her recent comments about the Civil War, specifically the omission of slavery as a cause.
Haley sought to clarify her stance and acknowledged that the Civil War was indeed about slavery.
In conversation with radio host Jack Heath, Haley stated, “But what’s the lesson in all of that?”
She continued, “That we need to make sure that every person has freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do and be anything they want to be without anyone or government getting in the way. That was the goal of what that was at. Yes, I know it was about slavery. I’m from the South, of course I know it’s about slavery.”
Haley’s initial comments, made at a New Hampshire town hall event, drew significant backlash from both within and outside the Republican Party.

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that Donald Trump should not appear on the state’s 2024 election ballots. The court cited the 14th Amendment, which holds that insurrectionists are disqualified from the presidency. The decision is stayed until Jan. 4, and Trump will likely appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy made waves again on Sunday in response to CNN commentator Van Jones‘ recent criticism of him.
Jones had referred to Ramaswamy as a “demagogue” in a previous on-air discussion and expressed concern about what he perceived as the rise of an American demagogue.
When Ramaswamy, 38, appeared at Turning Point USA’s Americafest in Arizona, he didn’t hold back in his reply to Jones.
He directly addressed Jones’ characterization, “And then you get the mainstream media, you got this character Van Jones on CNN afterward saying, ‘This is the rise of an American demagogue who’s gonna live 50 years longer than Trump. This is dangerous, I am shaking,’ that’s what he says.”
Ramaswamy said, “Just shut the f—- up. At a certain point, just shut the f— up.”
The crowd responded with cheers and laughs of support.

Donald Trump spoke at Whittemore Center Arena on the campus of University of New Hampshire in Durham on Saturday. He slammed his opponents, taking swipes at Republican presidential primary nominees Nikki Haley and Chris Christie — whom Trump, not a poster child of fitness himself, called “a fat pig.” But Trump reserved most of his ire for President Joe Biden, who beat him four years ago in an election Trump refuses to accept was legitimate.

Dana Bash and Jake Tapper will moderate CNN’s Republican primary debate on January 10, five days before the Iowa caucuses.
The event, to take place at Drake University, was announced last week along with another debate to be held on Jan. 21, two days before the New Hampshire primary.
The debates are not sanctioned by the Republican National Committee, which last week released candidates from the obligation of only participating in events approved by the party.
To qualify for the Iowa debate, candidates must receive at least 10% in three separate national and/or Iowa polls of Republican caucusgoers that meet the network’s standards for reporting, CNN said. One of the three polls must be a CNN approved poll of likely Iowa caucusgoers. Given where the candidates are in the polls, the candidates most likely to qualify are Donald Trump, Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis. A recent Des Moines Register/NBC News...

NewsNation brought in the largest audience of its two-and-a-half-year existence Wednesday night with its telecast of a Republican presidential primary debate.
The cable outlet drew 1.59 million viewers for the debate, which featured candidates Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy. A simulcast on The CW (which, like NewsNation, is owned by Nexstar) brought in 2.62 million people, for a total of 4.21 million viewers, according to Nielsen.
The 1.59 million viewers for NewsNation is more than 10 times its typical primetime tune-in; in November, the channel’s highest-rated primetime show — Cuomo, anchored by former CNN host Chris Cuomo — averaged 149,000 viewers. The debate also set a new high for NewsNation in the key news demographic of adults 25-54, 350,000 of whom watched Wednesday’s telecast.

Viewership for the fourth Republican debate fell since the last event, drawing more than 4 million for Nexstar’s NewsNation and its simulcast on The CW.
But it was a record night for NewsNation, which drew 1.6 million viewers for its debate coverage, the largest audience in its history, according to Nielsen’s early fast national numbers. Another 2.5 million watched the simulcast on The CW, giving it its most watched program since 2018. In the 25-54 demo, NewsNation drew more than 350,000 viewers and The CW drew nearly 500,000.
That said, the debate audience was down from the last event in November, continuing a trend since the first GOP gathering. Some 7.51 million watched the Nov. 8 debate across NBC News and its streaming and digital platforms. That debate averaged 6.86 million viewers on NBC alone.
The first Republican debate in August, hosted by Fox News, drew 12.8 million viewers.

The audience for NewsNation’s Wednesday-night Republican primary debate was one of the smallest and the biggest.
Nearly 1.6 million tuned in to the Nexstar-backed upstart cable-news outlet to watch two former Republican governors (Chris Christie and Nikki Haley), one current one (Ron DeSantis) and one outlier (Vivek Ramaswammy) tangle for attention and donors in a debate moderated by Elizabeth Vargas, Megyn Kelly and Eliana Johnson, with more than 2.5 million choosing to watch a simulcast on the CW broadcast network, a corporate sibling. At about 4.1 million, the overall TV audience is the smallest secured so far for this cycle’s Republican debates, two of which were broadcast by Fox News Media and a third by NBCUniversal.
But for Nexstar, the numbers may as well be akin to the Super Bowl. The NewsNation primetime lineup typically lures tens of thousands, not hundreds.

Update: This was the last debate of 2023 and, with polling showing Donald Trump still holds a commanding lead, it doesn’t appear that he has paid any price for bypassing these events.
He’s dismissed the debates as irrelevant, but save for a few mentions from Chris Christie and Ron DeSantis, none of his rivals have really gone full throttle in attacking him for skipping the events. Trump was the topic of discussion at points on Wednesday night, but those moments were largely overshadowed by the candidates attacking each other.
When moderators asked about the former president’s statement that he would be a dictator on day one of a second term, Christie attacked Trump, but Vivek Ramaswamy seemed to want to out-Trump Trump. Rather than attacking the former president, Ramaswamy labeled Nikki Haley a “fascist” for saying that she wanted verification of social media accounts.

Ah, the early days of a presidential election cycle. For a sketch comedian, there’s no better time.

“My wife said I could try this one more time,” Molly Kearney’s Chris Christie quipped. “I’m excited to look good in comparison,” Heidi Gardner’s Nikki Haley added, while Devon Walker’s Tim Scott rambled on about his girlfriend: “She is real and we’re dating, and for her I feel a real sense of human love.”
