Elyse Dinh, Casper Van Dien, Vivien Ngô and Ian Alexander in Daughter
A small scale film which plays with established genre tropes to misdirect viewers en route to an ending which takes it in a very different direction, Daughter provides a platform for underserved Asian American actors and stars Caspar Van Dien in a role unlike anything he’s previously done. He plays a man known only as Father, who presides over a makeshift family of people he has kidnapped in a remote, fortified home. After an opening sequence which illustrates what happens when one of them tries to escape, we meet Daughter/Sister (Vivien Ngô), a young woman who must quickly make sense of her situation if she is to survive. Issues around control and subversion on domestic and societal scales play out in a drama informed by the work of Simone de Beauvoir as viewers, like the heroine,...

The Vikings: Vallhalla review is spoiler free
The first season of Vikings spin-off Vikings: Valhalla had a lot to recommend it, from its sprawling cast of major characters and nuanced exploration of the tension between politics and religion to its massive action setpieces and incredible production values. But after a first season that saw a Viking army literally bring down London Bridge, many viewers are probably wondering where on earth the second season of Valhalla could possibly go next. And the answer is: Literally everywhere.
The second season of Vikings: Valhalla is bigger and bolder in every sense of the word, from the scope of its setting and the breadth of stories it’s telling to the sheer number of characters onscreen. There are more storylines, more bloodshed, and even more physical countries than we’ve ever seen before, as the primary narrative fractures into several major arcs and each...

A house to themselves. Michael J. Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, are opening up about their new lives as “empty nesters.”
The happy couple walked the red carpet at this year’s A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s Gala at Cipriani South Street in New York City on Sunday, and they spoke with Et’s Rachel Smith about their marriage and their kids.
“It’s an empty nest, but it’s not really an empty nest ’cause they’re all back tonight,” Fox shared. “But we all get together enough that we’re not heartbroken.”
“[However], it is a new stage in life to be, to have all the kids gone,” added Fox, who shares four kids with his wife of 35 years — son Sam, 33, twin daughters Schuyler and Aquinnah, 27, and daughter Esme, 20.
“Yeah, [we’re] empty nesters,” Pollan added. “Well, it’s not as empty as you...

When Ondi Timoner’s 92-year-old father told her that he was determined to end his life, the acclaimed documentary filmmaker naturally decided to capture his final weeks on camera — to record the 15-day waiting period mandated by the California End of Life Option Act. Deep within her grief a few weeks later, she found herself assembling this most intimate home video footage into something intended for other people to see: a (relatively) commercial product that would premiere at a festival and play in select theaters before living in perpetuity on VOD.
On paper, that might sound like a morbid and/or cynical exercise in mining public content from private loss. On screen, however, The director’s camera encourages her family to make themselves vulnerable and meet the moment head-on, while legal euthanasia offers them enough control over the timeline to let go of their precious Eli with love in both hands.

Between “The Babadook,” “Babyteeth,” and her own husband’s “True History of the Kelly Gang,” Australian actress Essie Davis has established herself as modern cinema’s most anguished mother. Nobody is better at — or more committed to — playing “good” parents in bad situations. She’s a widowed single mom who’s terrorized by a demonic manifestation of her own grief. She’s a Sydney woman who’s teenage daughter is coming of age and dying of cancer at the same time. She’s a loving matriarch of an infamous outlaw family who’s proud to watch her son get hanged for his crimes. It’s because Davis is so drawn to the agonies of unconditional love that she’s able to sell the beauty of it; no matter how wrenching and feral these performances might be, they all make it perfectly clear why having kids is worth the threat of...

Two years ago, Sticky was on the verge of disaster.
The family-owned-and-operated candy shop opened its doors in 2001, and up until 2020 was doing quite well for itself. It had a prominent retail spot in The Rocks, a historic and touristy neighborhood in Sydney, Australia, and owner David King and his employees did the vast majority of their work right at the front of the shop, where intrigued passersby could stop and watch the candymaking process. Things were good.

Later this week, fans of Greta Gerwig’s wholly charming brand of cinema are in for a very big treat when her solo directorial debut “Lady Bird” arrives in limited release. Already lauded on the festival circuit and considered something of an Oscar contender in a slew of categories, the film draws much of its inspiration from Gerwig’s own coming-of-age in suburban Sacramento. Featuring Saoirse Ronan as the eponymous Lady Bird (sure, her birth certificate says “Christine,” but the whipsmart high school senior doesn’t have much time for such restrictions), the film follows the restless teen as she comes to grips with the push-pull of home, family, friends, and boys, all as she’s about to go enter full-scale adulthood.
While Gerwig has been a bit cagey on the exact parallels between Lady Bird and herself (at a recent New York Film Festival press conference, the filmmaker said,...
