Several Asian American groups gathered in the Chinatown district of Los Angeles Thursday afternoon to call for comedian Shane Gillis to apologize for using “offensive racial remarks” in his stand-up performances.
Leaders of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, Chinese American Citizens Alliance Los Angeles and the Greater Los Angeles Japanese American Citizens League gathered at the Chinese American Citizens Alliance Lodge for a press conference, in which the groups also implored Netflix to cancel Gillis’ new sitcom “Tires” and that Bud Light cut all promotional funding toward his comedy tour unless an apology is issued.
“For centuries, xenophobic stereotypes and slurs that cast Asian Americans as perpetual foreigners have endangered our communities, as seen most recently in the spike in anti-Asian hate crimes and incidents since 2020,” California House representative Judy Chu said in a statement, delivered at the conference by Mitchell Matsumura, president of the Los Angeles chapter...

Over 20 years after Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon first debuted “The Barry Gibb Talk Show” on Saturday Night Live, the duo revived the sketch on the latest episode.
The premise remains unchanged after two decades and a handful of sketches: Fallon and Timberlake’s Barry and Robin Gibb welcome politicians and experts onto their show, despite the Bee Gees brothers having little understanding of politics. Instead of a thought-provoking conversation on the subject, Barry instead berates the guests, while he and his brother sporadically break into song.

Documentary follows the ambiguous impact of an American non-profit’s grand largesse to a Kenyan village
From each, nothing according to ability; to each, a pretty decent amount regardless of need. This is the experiment in radical giving being carried out by the US non-profit organisation GiveDirectly and its perma-smiley co-founder Michael Faye. The group donates free money directly as universal basic income to villages and needy communities all over the world, without the costly admin of means testing. East Africa is the main focus, and this documentary tracks the group’s association with the Kenyan village of Kogutu, making monthly cash transfers beginning in 2017 to properly constituted adult residents there over a projected period of 12 years.
It sounds like the premise of a quirky British comedy like Local Hero or Whisky Galore!, only with money instead of whisky. The lucky lottery winners of Kogutu are delighted, of course, and...

Ke Huy Quan Landed His Everything Everywhere All At Once Role With An Assist From One Of The Goonies
In a 2015 interview with the Daily Mail, actor Jeff Cohen recalled the disheartening experience of growing up in Hollywood. Jeff Cohen might be best known for playing the role of Lawrence "Chunk" Cohen in Richard Donner's 1985 adventure film "The Goonies," a nostalgic mainstay for kids of a certain generation. In the interview, Cohen talks about how being typecast as a "funny fat kid" left his choice of roles limited, and that he was constantly competing for the same parts with only a few other notable actors. He ended up retiring from acting at a young age, and eventually went into entertainment law. Donner helped Cohen pay for law school. These days, he runs the Cohen Garner Law Group, and wrote the book "The Dealmaker's Ten Commandments: Ten Essential Tools for Business Forged in the Trenches of Hollywood." He specialized in helping actors and Hollywood players negotiate deals.

In late February 2020, Evelyn Yang gathered at Foley Square in Manhattan with a handful of survivors in the hopes of pulling off something unprecedented. Her husband, Andrew Yang, had recently wrapped his presidential campaign, and all of the travel and scheduling demands that went along with that bid had subsided. On that sunny but cold day, she and Weinstein accuser Ambra Gutierrez and a couple of legislators were focused on launching a bill in New York dubbed the Adult Survivors Act. If it passed, New York would become the first...

What if a company promised to give you money, every month for twelve years, free of charge and without working? The humble people in the modest Kenyan village of Kogutu, are initially (and understandably) worried about what strings are attached when Ngo workers for the charity GiveDirectly arrive offering 22 a month for the next twelve years to any resident over the age of 18. The money, a universal basic income, promises to change their lives. It’s part of a test program, happening in several other countries, to see if direct infusions of cash works better in altering income inequality than standard charitable practices.
“Free Money,” by Sam Soko and Lauren DeFilippo, chronicles the implementation of GiveDirectly’s controversial program by its founder Michael Faye. It begins in 2017 and winds its way through the first four years of the plan, steadily checking in with the recipients to see how they’ve...

Bill Maher left his compassion at the stage door during Friday night’s “Real Time” when he not only downplayed Jada Pinkett Smith’s sensitivity about her alopecia-caused hair loss, but he also mockingly advised her, “just put on a f—ing wig like everybody else at the Oscars if it bothers you so much.”
The comedian offered his opinion on the events of last Sunday’s Oscars, when Chris Rock joked about Smith’s stylish cropped hairstyle, which prompted her husband, Will Smith, to jump out of his seat and smack a stunned Rock onstage on live TV.
“Real Time” panel guests Laura Coates and Andrew Yang joined Maher in a discussion about the incident. The host said that it wasn’t until the night of the awards that he had ever heard of alopecia, its symptoms and that Pinkett Smith had it. And the conversation went south from there.

You knew going into Friday’s Real Time on HBO that Bill Maher would cover the topic that everyone in Hollywood is talking about. And did he ever, starting from the top.
“Thank you all for coming and putting on a brave face,” Maher said right at the start, adding that he knew everyone was still processing the week’s biggest moment. “To Will Smith: stay strong and I got your back.”
Maher paused a beat. “April Fools. You’re a dick.”
That set the tone for a run of Will Smith jokes. “I’m not here to humiliate Will Smith. He gets enough of that at home.”.
Maher allowed that “Every single person in America was talking about the sucker punch heard ’round the world,” and noted, “That whole ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth’ didn’t really work out.”
The physical confrontation between Smith and Rock was short.

She co-hosted, with Pete Buttigieg and Andrew Yang, the “Trek the Vote to Victory” online fundraising drive for Joe Biden in 2020. And now she’s gone where few political figures have gone before: actually acting in a “Star Trek” show. How did the producers of “Star Trek: Discovery” pull this off?

The African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) has selected “The Harder They Fall” as the No. 1 film on their annual top 10 list.

Eric Adams has been elected mayor of New York City. The former New York City Police Department captain is the second Black mayor in the history of the nation’s largest city.
Adams, 61, who at present is Brooklyn borough president, prevailed out of a crowded field in the race to succeed Bill de Blasio, who had a rocky two terms as mayor, with his final years upended by social unrest and having the city become the first major Covid-19 hot zone in the U.S.
Adams emerged as a moderate option in a field of liberal contenders that included former city sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia, attorney Maya Wiley and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang. Adams was the largest vote-getter in the August mayoral primary, which signaled that he would have a smooth path to victory this month.

“You can’t be afraid to speak in America,” said host Bill Maher last night at the top of his HBO series, Real Time. He was talking about his views on one of the week’s big stories in entertainment, the Dave Chappelle controversy over language in The Closer.
But as later conversations in the show would prove, Maher was also talking about how polarization in this country’s politics and language has to end, a process that may be the only way to move forward.
Maher said he was a Chappelle fan, but added that doesn’t mean he hates trans people. His guest panelist, author and NY Times newsletter opinion writer John McWhorter, likened such polarization as akin to a religion, wherein people view things in ways that point to one absolute and final truth.

Few sketch performers have had the kind of meteoric rise of Bowen Yang in his first two seasons as a performer on “Saturday Night Live.” The actor came out of the gate strong with a slew of memorable characters like Chen “Trade Daddy” Ciao and impressions of Kim Jong-un and Andrew Yang. He has also made a huge mark on Weekend Update, appearing in two of the most memorable segments of this past season, as himself to discuss anti-Asian violence in America and, mere weeks later, as the iceberg that sunk the Titanic. This versatility helped Yang become the first “SNL” featured player nominated for an Emmy. Here are four reasons why I believe Yang has a strong chance of making history again by being the first featured player who will win an Emmy.

The Associated Press Tuesday called the New York City Democratic primary for Brooklyn borough chief Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain who appears to have beaten out his closest rival Kathryn Garcia as well as third place Maya Wiley.
All three had trounced former presidential hopeful Andrew Yang in primary voting last month.
With most absentee votes now counted, Adams led Garcia by 8,426 votes in the city’s first mayoral contest to be determined by so-called ranked-choice voting, a somewhat confusing system that allowed voters to rank all the candidates by preference. The city will announce official results in July. Adams, the overwhelming favorite to win in November against the Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa (founder of the Guardian Angels), would be the Big Apple’s second black mayor.
Garcia is the former Department of Sanitation commissioner. Wiley, who was the leading candidate among progressives, is former counsel to outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio.

New York City voters are heading to the polls today in a primary election just the third mayor in the past 20 years.
Because of the political makeup of the left-leaning city, the race among 13 Democrats in today’s primary will effectively decide the official winner, rendering Election Day in November a formality. The top candidates in pre-primary polling have been 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang; Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, activist and MSNBC contributor Maya Wiley; New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer; and former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia.
There are only two Republicans on the primary ballot, businessman Fernando Mateo and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. Both are considered marginal in the overall picture.
Polls close at 9 p.m. Et, but results could take a while to be tabulated. The lengthy process is due to a switched to “rank-choice” ballots this year. As is familiar to Oscar voters, those choosing candidates...

If bon mots were bonbons, Fran Lebowitz would be Willie Wonka.
She has been dispensing witty observations for decades now, in her book The Fran Lebowitz Reader, as a frequent and reliably funny guest on late-night TV, and most recently in the Netflix documentary series Pretend It’s a City.
Her friend Martin Scorsese directed the Emmy-contending series, the second documentary he’s made that focused on Lebowitz, after the 2010 film Public Speaking. Pretend It’s a City consists of conversations between the two, as well as public speaking engagements Lebowitz made before Covid hit, moderated by the likes of Spike Lee, Alec Baldwin, and Olivia Wilde.
The seven-part series includes an ample supply of pithy comments, most of them springing from Lebowitz’s curmudgeonly point of view—a longtime New York resident (though originally from New Jersey) who feels constantly irked by the foibles of people with whom she shares the city.

Becoming mayor of New York City requires submitting oneself to a gauntlet of minor humiliations: being ridiculed for everything from your favorite subway stop, to the way you eat pizza, to the pseudonym you used to sext strangers you met online. On a recent Saturday in Manhattan’s Tompkins Square Park, one-time frontrunner Andrew Yang was experiencing a new one: getting absolutely owned in a game of Horse by a 28-year-old in a translucent blue unitard and neon hot pants — the rapper Paperboy Prince.

NYC mayoral candidate Andrew Yang released a sweeping “arts revival” proposal today that would include the use of city funds and corporate commitments to purchase “hundreds of thousands” of Broadway and Off Broadway tickets at reduced prices to “bring people back into theatre seats” and stimulate economic growth.
“The administration will negotiate with shows to purchase blocks of hundreds of thousands of tickets at reduced prices to Broadway theatres, off Broadway and other cultural venues,” Yang’s proposal states. “It will commit to buying a portion of tickets with funding from the Mayor’s Fund and will seek commitments from the private sector to match these purchases.”
The corporations – Yang cites a sort-of wish list of J.P. Morgan, Deloitte, PwC and Ernst & Young – would keep a portion of the tickets for themselves “while donating the majority of the other tickets to non-profit organizations around the city, starting with...

Former Democratic presidential contender Andrew Yang is planning to enter the race to succeed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in November.
The former tech executive, who was born in upstate New York and has lived for years in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, has been telling New York power brokers that he intends to run although no announcement is expected until next month, according to new reports Friday. The Democratic primary is in June.
Those Yang has tapped for advice recently are said to include NYC City Council Speaker Corey Johnson. He plans to meet with Rev. Al Sharpton next week when he returns to the city from Georgia, where he has been trying to help Democrats in two heated U.S. Senate runoffs. And he has called on two prominent political strategists who worked for former Mayor Michael Bloomberg as advisers, according to the New York Times Friday.

Last night’s second Democratic debate on CNN, which was marked by a protestor interruption and featured a rematch between California Sen. Kamala Harris and Former Vice President Joe Biden, topped the first in total viewership.
With 10.7 million, Wednesday night’s affair was up 24% on the first.
Wednesday’s debate was down 43% on NBC’s first debate which aired to 15.3 million viewers on June 26. However, it’s worth noting that both NBC debates also aired on MSNBC and Telemundo. The second NBC debate on June 27 was watched by nearly 18.1 million viewers.
None of the debates so far in this cycle have come near to the 24 million figure posted by Donald Trump’s first debate on Fox News in August of 2015. However, the feisty affair on June 27 was the most-watched Democratic primary debate in history, easily topping the first Democratic debate of the 2016 cycle, which stood at 15.7 million viewers on CNN.

One night after roasting the first round of Democratic presidential contenders, Stephen Colbert returned Wednesday for a second live post-debate breakdown, dubbed “This Time It’s Not All White People.” His primary target, like many of the primary participants, was former Vice President Joe Biden, who faced political “[attacks] from all sides.”
The comedian noted how Biden “ran out of steam” while trying to explain his health care plan. “They can buy into the gold plan, and they won’t have to pay — anyway,” the Democratic front-runner said, cutting himself off.

The second night of the Democratic primary debates in Michigan paid off with a genuine fight night, featuring Joe Biden against all comers.
For more than three hours Wednesday night at the Fox Theater in Detroit, Democratic rivals took jabs at the former vice president, seeking to portray the the 2020 frontrunner as a relic of the party’s past who’s unfit to carry its banner today. Kamala Harris swung at him on health care. Julián Castro and Bill de Blasio hit him over Obama-era deportations. Cory Booker connected on criminal justice reform.
