In John McPhail’s gorehound musical “Anna and the Apocalypse,” one of the standout world premieres at this year’s Fantastic Fest, our high school heroine (Ella Hunt) sleeps through the start of a worldwide zombie attack, slips on her headphones, steps out her front door, and begins to sing. “It’s a beautiful day!” belts Anna. Behind her, one neighbor dies, another falls out of a window, and as the camera pulls back, we see her small Scottish town is on fire. Yesterday, her dad (Mark Benton), the school janitor, found out she’s skipping college for a gap year in Australia, the class bully Nick (Ben Wiggins) propositioned her in the cafeteria, and her dorky best friend John (Malcolm Cumming) nearly lost his job when he accidentally thwacked their co-worker with a bowling shoe. Today, she dances down the street, swinging on light poles like Gene Kelly, totally...

Horton Foote, Lillian Hellman and Arthur Penn's All-Star vision of an Ugly America found few friends in 1965; now its overstated scenes of social injustice and violence are daily events. The 40th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival now has something of a slate. Festival toppers Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling presided over a press conference Tuesday morning where more than 34 films were announced including the world premieres of "The Martian," "The Family Fang" and "Demolition." It's an intriguing initial lineup for the venerable Canadian institution and something of a steadying the ship after losing some major debuts to Venice, Telluride and the New York Film Festival over the past few years. Well, maybe. The most impressive world premieres include the aforementioned "Demolition" with Jake Gyllenhaal (officially the best opening night film in recent memory), "The Family Fang" with Nicole Kidman, "Legend" with Tom Hardy, "Trumbo" with Bryan Cranston, "The Martian" with Matt Damon and Lance Armstrong doc "The Program" with Ben Foster and Michael Moore's latest documentary, "Where to Invade Next." Notable films that will have premiered...

The 65th Emmy Awards Nominations are here, and Netflix just made TV history. Their streaming series House of Cards just received 9 nominations including one for best drama series, marking the first time that an online series has achieved the same recognition as the best of television. Stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright both received acting noms, and although Netflix’s fourth season of Arrested Development didn’t pick-up a best comedy nod, its star, Jason Bateman, did.
The FX supernatural thriller American Horror Story: Asylum scored the most nominations with 17 although it was shut out of the best drama race. Game of Thrones followed behind with 16 while Saturday Night Live and Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra both clocked 15 each. Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, who headed up Candelabra are both in the acting race.

Our Deaths, in memoriam was the project title of Lav Diaz' Kagadanan sa Banwaan Ning mga Engkanto (2007). For the Ferroni Brigade, it became the motto of Venice 2011—specters of dear lives gone seemed to roam the event, the Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica as well as the Esposizione internazionale d'arte, and beyond.
We always commemorate the murder of Nika Bohinc and Alexis Tioseco on September 1st 2009, quietly, invariably in Venice; it was here that we heard about the crime; now, whenever we go to the press room to check our e-mails, deep down something inside us is afraid of getting another message like that one; fittingly, one of the last films we saw this year was Diaz' latest, Siglo ng Pagluluwal (Century of Birthing, 2011), which ends with a dedication to them, and talks about the way our loved ones, just like cherished ideas, notions and visions are essentially eternal,...

The lovely, talented and leather-prone Anna Silk is the star of television’s greatest series about a bisexual succubus, Lost Girl. Fine, it is television’s only drama about a bisexual succubus. But that doesn’t make it any less great. The series, which debuted on Canada’s Showcase network in 2010, is now in its second season with our neighbors to the north. But on Monday, United States audiences will finally get their first official taste of super succubus Bo and the supernatural world of the Fae as Lost Girl debuts on SyFy.
Silk, who plays the show’s central heroine Bo, has come a long way in a season and a half. In the beginning she was a young woman unaware of her supernatural heritage who left smiling, but very dead lovers in her wake. Now she is a strong, independent succubus who is poised to play a key...

The most stunning discovery so far at Venice is not a new film at all but rather a film that feels completely new. Alberto Grifi and Massimo Sarchielli’s Anna (1972-1975), restored for the “Orizzonti 1960-1978” retrospective, is a startling documentary that takes upon itself to tell the story of a 16 year-old pregnant transient Roman but quickly, awkwardly and organically morphs into something else.
The film begins with the filmmakers trying to re-enact scenes of their initial contact with the eponymous girl, but soon we see the process of their direction, with shots beginning or ending with direction from Sarchielli as to what Anna should or or say in the scene. Sarchielli himself appears on screen as much as Anna because he volunteers to take the homeless girl into his house, where she can be cared for...and filmed.

The retrospective at this year's Venice film festival is dedicated to Italian experimental cinema of the 1960s and 70s.
Designed by Enrico Magrelli and his team (Domenico Monetti, Luca Pallanch) from a commission and idea of Mostra director Marco Muller, it has been conceived in full consistency with the Mostra's Orizzonti section, which is dedicated every year to showing short medium and feature length films showcasing new trends of world cinema. Research, experimentation, new languages, "non mainstream" and cross-discipline works are therefore represented both in the premieres of Orizzonti and in the Retrospective section. No doubt many will also make a connection with this year's presentation of an impressive restoration of Nick Ray's We Can’t Go Home Again.

If you're more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer's glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is quite the list -- there are easily thirty films here that could be potential top ten for 2011 candidates,...

It looks like we're in for another great year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I'm excited to be just a little bit closer to the action this time around. The very first titles from the 2011 fest were announced today, and there were definitely a lot of familiar faces among the 10 Galas and 43 Special Presentations. George Clooney is back with two films this year (The Ides of March and The Descendants) and many other Tiff alumni are returning with their latest works including David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method), Lars Von Trier (Melancholia), Todd Solondz (Dark Horse), Fernando Meirelles (360), Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), Steve McQueen (Shame), Pedro Almodóvar (The Skin I Live In), Michael Winterbottom (Trishna) and Sarah Polley (Take This Waltz). Both Moneyball and 50/50 fill the requisite "big September release with awards potential" slots, while Roland Emmerich's Anonymous was a bit of a surprise pick. However, for the first time ever,...

And Broadway will pay the ultimate tribute to Richardson tonight when the lights of all the theaters along the rialto are dimmed for one minute at curtain time.
