Denis Villeneuve has decided to celebrate the upcoming release of “Blade Runner 2049” by commissioning three short films that bridge the gap between the original “Blade Runner” and his highly anticipated sequel. The first centered around Jared Leto’s villain, the Replicant manufacturer named Niander Wallace, and now the second short film has arrived and puts David Bautista’s Sapper Morton front and center.

Successful applicants will be invited to participate in a script development lab.
Arclight Films has launched a development initiative, Chinalight, designed to support official Australian-Chinese co-productions.
The new initiative, which started taking submissions today (August 2), is supported by Screen Australia’s Enterprise program. It is seeking proposals from Australian talent – including writers, producers and directors – for feature film projects that can qualify as official co-productions.
Successful applicants will be invited to take part in a script development lab, where they will receive input from Chinese and Australian production partners on how to produce movies with international appeal.
Arclight managing director Gary Hamilton said: “Chinese studios have never been more willing to engage with the West both creatively and commercially, and Australia’s entertainment industry stands to reap huge gains, spearheading a new era of storytelling for global audiences.”

Nicole Kidman in ‘Lion’ (Courtesy: Mark Rogers/Long Way Productions)
By: Carson Blackwelder

Nothing is ever certain when it comes to predicting how the Oscars will shape up, but it seems as though Nicole Kidman is a slam dunk in this year’s race. The Lion star has already been nominated three times in the past — even snagging one win in the process — across categories and it seems as though a fourth is on the way. How often does this happen in the best actress and best supporting actress categories?
The reason a fourth nomination for Kidman seems inevitable is because the 49-year-old Australian-American has been nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award and a Satellite Award (losing both) as well as a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award (awaiting results). With those in the bag, an Oscar nomination is right around the corner — and this site’s namesake,...

Veteran’s Day is November 11. While we all try to escape from the most exasperating Presidential Campaign in our history let me pay tribute to the Men and Women who have served in the military to insure we keep our electoral process and our freedoms.
Having served in the Navy four years (there he goes again!) I have a keen interest in any movie about the military, especially the sea service. I did serve during peace time so had no experience with combat but still spent most of my tour of duty at sea on an aircraft carrier, the USS Amerca CV66. Among other jobs I ran the ship’s television station for almost two years. Movies have always been important to me and so providing a few hours of entertainment every day when we were at sea was just about the best job I could have had.

The Zellner brothers — consisting of David, writer and director, and Nathan, writer and producer — have been working their way further and further into the spotlight as of late. After years of praise that never quite translated into commercial notice, last year’s Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter proved about as popular and successful as a semi-austere, primarily Japanese-language film concerning a woman’s search for the treasure from Fargo might be — enough, perhaps, to attract two noteworthy players for the next endeavor.
Various sources have told us the Zellners are now directing Robert Pattinson in Damsel, a “Western Era comedy about a man trying to marry the woman of his dreams.” While the Utah Film Commission notes production began this week, our biggest indication that the ball’s rolling is a series of set photos showing Pattinson in — drum roll! — western-appropriate garb. There were many conversations surrounding Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, most of them bad, and among the more interesting concerned its star, Ellar Coltrane — one of the “what now?” variety. (This interested me so much, in fact, that I asked him about it during an interview in the summer of 2014.) It didn’t take long to get an answer: in September of last year, he signed for James Ponsoldt’s The Circle, putting him in a co-starring position with Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and John Boyega. And now there’s an update from Variety: the actor’s joined Barry, an Obama biopic-of-sorts concerning the future President’s time at Columbia University in 1981.
They share no details about who Coltrane’s playing, though it’s at least known that Devon Terrell (of Steve McQueen’s unsuccessful HBO pilot Codes of Conduct) will step into the main role; Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, M. Night Shyamalan...

Mexican maestro Guillermo Del Toro is making a much-anticipated return to the genre he helped define in recent years with Crimson Peak. Following his riotous rock-’em, sock-’em robot affair Pacific Rim, the visionary craftsman has opted to reimagine the lurking horrors of the haunted house; perhaps something deemed cliched on paper, but you just know that in these methodical hands the results will be anything but.
Featuring a dynamic central trio in Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, a release date the perfectly builds towards the Halloween festivities, and a wealth of international support, to say Crimson Peak should sit highly on your must-see list is a vast understatement.
To celebrate the forthcoming release – which opens nationwide on Friday 16th October – we will venture the shadowy halls, open the creaking doors and immerse ourselves in the devilish delights of Allerdale Hall to provide you with...

Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak premiered at Austin’s Fantastic Fest this past weekend, and while full reviews are embargoed until mid-October, the first reactions to the highly anticipated Gothic horror movie have surfaced on Twitter.
Pacific Rim was a movie which divided critics and even the most loyal of the filmmaker’s devoted fanbase, but it thankfully sounds like Crimson Peak is something of a return to form for Del Toro as he goes back to his roots. It’s odd then that Universal has decided to hold back reviews until so close to the movie’s release, but there have been reports of some behind the scenes issues (they refused to co-finance Crimson Peak with Legendary Pictures upon learning that it was going to be R-Rated), so that could explain why they’re not overly interested in giving it a huge push.

Bond back into action. Katniss drawing her final arrow. A double helping of Michael Fassbender. There's no need to mourn the end of summer blockbuster season with these big screen treats arriving in the coming months. Here are 12 films worth ducking into a warm cinema for this autumn.
1. The Martian - September 30
Houston, Matt Damon has a problem! The Bourne star finds himself stranded on Mars after a manned mission to the red planet goes very, very wrong. Ridley Scott is the man behind the camera aiming to add another sci-fi classic to his CV (ie, more Alien less Prometheus).
2. Macbeth - October 2
The play that can not be named gets the big screen treatment as Michael Fassbender takes on the eponymous role and Marion Cotillard is his good lady wife. From the trailers this basically looks like Shakespeare crossed with 300 and Game of Thrones. Count us in.

New to Netflix in September are two kinds of undead: Season 5 of "The Walking Dead" and the revived-from-cancellation A&E series, "Longmire," which was saved by Netflix.

There are also period dramas you might have missed from last year with Jessica Chastain ("Miss Julie") and Mia Wasikowska ("Madame Bovary") and hey, "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl!"
Available September 1
"72 Dangerous Animals Australia": Season 1 (2014)
"Combustión" (2013)
"Da Jammies": Season 1
"Giggle and Hoot's Best Ever!" (2014)

In a little over two months, viewers can experience Crimson Peak's Allerdale Hall, a place haunted by ghosts and inhabited by two potentially dangerous humans: Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) and his sister, Lady Lucille Sharpe (Jessica Chastain). But before Guillermo del Toro's latest hits the big screen on October 16th, it will hit the shelves in the form of Funko's Pop! vinyl figures.
Depicting Sir Thomas Sharpe, Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska), and Mother Ghost, Funko's Crimson Peak Pop! vinyl figures are slated for a September release. No word yet if we'll see Pop! vinyl figures of other key Crimson Peak characters like Jessica Chastain's Lady Lucille Sharpe or Charlie Hunnam's Dr. Alan McMichael, but we'll keep our fingers crossed for further announcements.
From Funko: "Crimson Peak, the latest cinematic adventure from director Guillermo del Toro, is sure to cause a scare!

Guillermo del Toro’s gothic thriller “Crimson Peak” doesn’t hit theaters until this October. Of course, that means all the merchandising will be reaching retailer shelves in September. Which means the promotional blasts are going out right about…now. You can see where this is headed. Remember the eerie feeling the “Crimson Peak” trailer evoked? Like if “Casper” had been meant for an adult audience and not pre-teen girls who inexplicably found themselves crushing on the voice of Malachi Pearson and the body of Devon Sawa. In said trailer, several supernatural phenomena appear. Including one mysterious, black-clad ghost person creeping on Mia Wasikowska. The trailers are very careful to hide this ghost’s face. We see her hands… …and her feet… …but never any kind of defining characteristics outside of obvious tattered mourning clothes. Warning: “Crimson Peak” Spoiler Beyond This Point. Well Funko — creators of the ubiquitous Pop!Vinyls...

Phillip Noyce and Bruce Beresford will each direct an episode and DoP Peter Menzies Jr. will shoot all four episodes of Roots for A&E Networks. The original Roots based on the Alex Haley novel Roots: The Saga Of An American Family was the third most watched series in Us history when it screened on the ABC network in 1977.

Jessica Chastain joked once that she was worried she might fall in love with Charlie Hunnam on the set of their new horror film Crimson Peak. At the time, Chastain had yet to meet the hunky Sons of Anarchy actor, but he had just been cast in Fifty Shades of Grey. "Are you telling me I'm going to fall in love with Charlie Hunnam on set?" Chastain asked back in September 2013. Fast forward to Comic-Con 2015, where I caught up with Chastain and her two other Crimson co-stars Tim Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska. "I did not fall in love with Charlie, press out!" Chastain said with a big smile. "I do love him, but I'm not in love with him." Gushing that Hunnam is...

Edinburgh: Scottish actor gives talk about 22-year acting career including new role as Jesus in Last Days In The Desert.
Ewan McGregor revealed to an audience at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) on Sunday that he would be willing to reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi to tell the story of Stars Wars between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back should Disney ever wish to do so.
The comments came during an on-stage interview in which the Scottish star looked back over the highlights of his career thus far and chose his words carefully on the subject of the forthcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
The actor seemed not to be the most rabid of fanboys and declared: “I’m not a fanatical person.”
Still, he said he was impressed by the trailer - “It looks like [Jj Abrams] he absolutely nailed it” - except for the lightsaber’s updated design.

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

The year 2015 is shaping up to be a very exciting time at the movies. Blockbuster sequels like Star Wars and Avengers plus exciting new adventures from Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are arriving over the next year. Here is a list of the highly anticipated movies I’m looking forward to in 2015.
Please share with us the movies your most looking forward to by reaching out to us on Twitter and Facebook.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
The assembled team of superheroes return featuring Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk and two new additions, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The trailer showed a rather dark side that is sure to accompany a bigger and louder sequel. I enjoyed the first movie, but something tells me this one will top it.

Dwayne Johnson's latest actioner San Andreas is another PG-13 rated visual effects piece of disaster porn as the MPAA promises "intense disaster action and mayhem throughout". Can't wait! There's more PG-13 goodness in the Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara comedy Hot Pursuit, but the rest of this week's highlights are all R-rated, that is, except for the PG-rated Minions, but, well, you know... Two movies we reviewed out of SXSW are coming soon and both are rated R in the form of Adult Beginners and The Overnight. Also, the Owen Wilson, Lake Bell and Pierce Brosnan "trouble in Southeast Asia" movie, No Escape, has an updated R rating. The original rating back in July 2014 was for "strong violence including a sexual assault, and for language", and this new rating is pretty much the same, but it's missing the "including a sexual assault" bit. Wonder what happened there... Finally, there's...

I have to admit, I'm a little surprised to see the R rating for Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak, not due to del Toro, but because I didn't think a major studio would allow for an R-rated fantasy feature, as PG-13 seemed to be the highest bar they'd allow. Kudos to them for allowing del Toro to do his thing. I'm not even more interested in this pic starring Charlie Hunnam, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston. We also have an R-rating for Scott Cooper's Whitey Bulger feature Black Mass starring Johnny Depp and another for Eli Roth's Knock Knock starring Keanu Reeves. Lone Scherfig's The Riot Club hasn't enjoyed top marks on the festival circuit, but IFC will bring it to us later this year as an R-rated feature and just in the nick of time Paramount gets The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water a PG-rating.

Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

After platforming at four cinemas in New York and Los Angeles John Curran.s Tracks expanded to 28 screens in the Us last weekend.
The 3-day gross was $US70,951 for a per-screen average of $2,534, bringing the 10-day cume to $103,098.
That.s not a great result for the Weinstein Co., which originally intended to launch the Outback adventure starring Mia Wasikowska as .camel girl. Robyn Davidson in May.
Tracks underlines how tough it can be for Australian films to crack the mainstream Us market, while deals for a limited theatrical release or straight to DVD and VOD are becoming more common.
John V. Soto.s The Reckoning is taking the latter path with a simultaneous VOD and DVD launch in the Us and Canada on October 28 via Anchor Bay Entertainment.
.A theatrical release in North America would require a substantial P&A commitment that is better spent pushing the VOD release,. said Soto,...

Chicago – “Do you ever wonder if the things that are meant to connect us … actually disconnect us?” This cheesy hypothesis as found in many millennial dramas has only caused the film world go to in circles about the quandary of handheld screens and social media. With its cool air, John Curran’s low-key adventure “Tracks” takes a line straight through that argument, providing a story of disconnection from distraction as set in a world when Apple products were only gadgets on re-runs of “Star Trek.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The story of “Tracks” is a true one, and follows free-spirit Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska), a young woman in 1970s Australia who dreams of crossing 1,7000 miles through the western desert with four camels and her dog, while carrying only the necessities, like a compass. To get funding for the venture, she appeals to National Geographic Magazine, who agrees to fund her ambitious venture so...

If this film thing doesn't work out, Johnny Depp has a sure future as musical sideman. Depp, 51, showcased his considerable guitar skills recently when he stepped out of the wings during a Ryan Adams show at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire to join the rocker on two songs, locking up a pretty mean guitar solo on his tune "Kim" and a cover of Danzig's "Mother." The hat-wearing actor was well-received. He was met with chants of "Johnny, Johnny," as he left the stage amid cheers after his musical turn. Adams thanked the actor for his contribution, calling him "J-Dizzle," according to a concertgoer.
