Exclusive: Oscar winning Nomadland producer Peter Spears has optioned Mike Nichols: A Life, the 2021 biography of the director by Mark Harris, for development as a dramatic feature film.
The planned adaptation of the book, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, will not be a cradle-to-grave biography but will focus on a young Nichols as he journeys from Broadway to Hollywood to make his first film, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), depicting his high-stakes collaboration with the film’s two married stars, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Spears will develop the film for his production company, Cor Cordium. His other producing credits include the Oscar-winning Call Me by Your Name (2017), Bones and All (2022), and On Swift Horses, with Jacob Elordi, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Diego Calva, and Will Poulter, which will open later this year. Harris is also the author of Pictures at a Revolution (2008) and the World War II filmmaking history...

Last year’s Best Narrator Emmy contest was a real clash of the titans as three-time champion David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) attempted to fend off famously charismatic first-timer Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). Now that the former U.S. president has one victory under his belt, he is immediately seeking a second for another Netflix series, “Working: What We Do All Day.” This time, he faces an entirely different slate of challengers who could very well make this outing even more difficult.
Those competing against Obama for the 2023 narration prize are returning nominees Angela Bassett (“Good Night Oppy”) and Morgan Freeman (“Our Universe”) and category newcomers Mahershala Ali (“Chimp Empire”) and Pedro Pascal (“Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World”). Collectively, the professional actors have previously vied for 14 Emmys across 10 categories.

Sylvester Stallone’s first regular television series role on the Paramount+ mob-themed series “Tulsa King” has put him in this year’s Emmy race. And while it’s not rare for a performer primarily or solely identified with features to find Emmy success, it’s significantly less common for them to generate it in a comedy category, where Stallone presently finds himself in 10th place among series leads in the Gold Derby combined count.
A longshot? Absolutely. But there is certainly plenty of precedent for movie stars shuttling to TV and earning Emmy recognition. Here are 10 examples:
Al Pacino – He won lead actor in a miniseries or movie statues for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in “Angels in America” (2004) and Dr. Jack Kevorkian in “You Don’t Know Jack” (2010). That’s double his number of Oscar wins, Pacino’s lone triumph being for “Scent of a Woman” in 1993. Meryl Streep – Streep...

It’s a well-known fact that Meryl Streep is the most Oscar-nominated actor of all time, with 21 bids (and three wins) dating as far back as 1978. What many may not realize, however, is that her storied history with the film academy began after she had already clinched an Emmy for her lead performance on the NBC miniseries “Holocaust.” Indeed, she has won as many Emmys as she has Oscars, and she could soon nab at least a fourth TV trophy since her upcoming projects include Apple TV+’s “Extrapolations” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
Before she received her first Emmy, Streep made her small screen debut opposite John Lithgow in a 1977 installment of PBS’s “Great Performances,” entitled “Secret Service.” This was essentially a filmed stage play presented as a two-hour movie. Her first proper telefilm was “The Deadliest Season,” in which she portrayed the wife of...

As Gold Derby predicted, Barack Obama was just awarded the Best Narrator prize at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys for the Netflix documentary series “Our Great National Parks.” The former U.S. president was, understandably, not in attendance to accept his first TV Academy honor. He is now halfway to Egot status, having already nabbed two Grammys for Best Spoken Word Album.
Obama fended off quite a formidable challenger in three-time Best Narrator Emmy winner David Attenborough, who was recognized this year for “The Mating Game.” The other three contenders in the lineup were returning nominees Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (“Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War”) and Lupita Nyong’o (“Serengeti II”) and category first-timer W. Kamau Bell (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”).

After many votes have been tabulated, Barbra Streisand and Meryl Streep are your top two choices to receive the 2022 Screen Actors Guild life achievement award. The SAG-AFTRA committee will most likely be announcing their life achievement award recipient in the near future for the ceremony next February. This event skipped the annual tradition in 2021 for a pre-taped, shortened ceremony. It was three men in a row for the most recent ceremonies, so our guess is that it will be a woman this time. Few directors have made a significant impact in both cinema and the theater; Mike Nichols was one of them. Like Orson Welles before him, Nichols was a triple-threat: a wunderkind actor, writer, and director treading the boards of Broadway before making in-roads in Hollywood with an impressive string of films all before he turned 40. After 21 films, 29 Broadway productions, and one of the few members of the Egot club, Mike Nichols died at the age of 83 in 2014. As this year would have been Nichols’ 90th birthday, his life and work are the focus of Mark Harris’ latest book, “Mike Nichols: A Life.”
A native New Yorker, Harris fell under Mike’s benevolent spell in his late teens when he saw both The Graduate and his Broadway production of Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing starring Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close: experiences that left a lasting impression on the revered film...

Mark Harris has written two remarkable books, both about important moments in Hollywood history. The first, “Pictures at a Revolution,” dealt with the Oscar race of 1967 and how that year’s Best Picture nominees represented the past, present and future of the industry. Then there was 2014’s “Five Came Back,” about the A-list directors who left their careers behind to take part in WWII — and how their work changed upon their return.
Now, Harris has written almost 600 pages about one man only, and it may be the best biography of an artist in a very long time. That man is performer-turned-director Mike Nichols, the winner of one Oscar, two Emmys and eight Tony Awards. “In the last two books, I had the luxury of going back and forth between main characters,” said Harris, who titled his work “Mike Nichols: A Life.” “In this one, I had no one else to cut to.

John le Carré was lauded Sunday as a writer’s writer whose productivity and singular storytelling style was praised by fans ranging from late night star Seth Meyers to fellow novelists Stephen King and Paulo Coelho.
Le Carré, who died Dec. 12 at the age of 89, was known as a master of espionage fiction who turned out 25 novels over more than a half-century of writing. His signature works — including “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” — captured drama and tension of Cold War geopolitical jockeying like no other contemporary scribe.
Le Carré’s novels were widely adapted as film and TV properties over the years, including 2005’s “The Constant Gardener,” which earned an Oscar for star Rachel Weisz, and 1965’s “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold,” starring Richard Burton. AMC had a hit in 2016 with limited series “The Night Manager,” starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie.

It’s safe to say that Meryl Streep’s blood-curdling scream on “Big Little Lies” reached even Emmy voters, as they shortlisted her in Best Drama Supporting Actress for the HBO series’ second installment. Maya Rudolph has two nominations for Best Comedy Guest Actress this year, making her the first actor in Emmy history to be nominated twice in the same guest category in a single year. This is her third consecutive nomination for her recurring role as Judge Gen on “The Good Place,” which contends now for its final season. This is her second nomination for “Saturday Night Live”; she is up for her impression of Senator Kamala Harris, having been recognized previously for a 2012 hosting gig.
SEEour rundown on this year’s Emmy Award nominations.
Dueling guest nominations have only been possible since 2010, as performers were limited to one listing per guest ballot before then. A similar rule remains in effect for the Best Directing and Best Technical Direction categories. A caveat is that Jane Alexander and Angela Lansbury were each nominated in Best Drama Guest Actress for multiple series in 2000 and 2005 respectively,...

The Supporting Actress Smackdown series picks an Oscar vintage -- 1991 this time -- and explores.
The Nominees Oscar went with two sentimental favourite veterans (Jessica Tandy and Diane Ladd) and three first-timers who were having hard-to-ignore years. This shortlist was full of characters: a chatterbox octogenarian, an agressively needy video store owner, a sexually mercurial teenager, a monstrous southern matriarch, and a proto-feminist in the deep south.
The Panel Here to talk about the performances and films are, in alpha order, entertainment journalist Mark Harris ("Pictures at a Revolution", "Five Came Back"), Tony winning actress Nikki M James (The Book of Mormon, The Good Fight), Tony nominated actor Rory O'Malley (The Book of Mormon, Hamilton), Vanity Fair's deputy editor Katey Rich, Drama Desk winning actor Nick Westrate (Casa Valentina, Turn: Washington's Spies), and your host at The Film Experience, Nathaniel R. TV, VOD and streaming are where it’s at this year when it comes to entertainment viewing options. Actual movie theaters? Not so much, given that the coronavirus pandemic is forcing us to socially distance from one another. But more than a few major big-screen female talents who have at least one Oscar on a shelf are in contention for Emmys — some with multiple chances this year to compete on the ballot. Check out which illustrious actresses are in the running.
Olivia Colman — The British actress won a lead Oscar for her somewhat addled 18th-century Queen Anne who pitted two of her ladies in waiting against one another in 2018’s “The Favourite.” She was Emmy-nominated for her supporting role in AMC’s “The Night Manager” in 2016 and for her part as the title character’s passive-aggressive stepmother on the second season of Netflix’s “Fleabag” in 2019. If you’re not fighting the good fight on the front lines at hospitals, grocery stores or other essential public services as the coronavirus pandemic makes its way across the world, chances are you’re going to be home for a while. And whether you’re self-quaranting, social distancing or otherwise becoming one with your couch, you might look at this as an opportunity to tackle some epic-length movies that might otherwise have seemed daunting. Let us recommend some great ones.
(Note: With works this long, the concepts of “movie” and “miniseries” get rather muddled: “Berlin Alexanderplatz” was originally a miniseries on German TV but was released to theaters as a marathon viewing experience in the United States. Exclusive: Laurent Bouzereau, the director of Netflix’s riveting World War II documentary Five Came Back and the upcoming HBO doc Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind, has acquired rights to Mama’s Boy: A Story From Our Americas, the recent memoir by Oscar-winning screenwriter and activist Dustin Lance Black. The plan is to adapt it into a feature-length documentary.
Meetings are now underway with investors and distributors, with the aim to release a film in late 2020.
“I couldn’t be more pleased to place our family’s story in Laurent’s extremely capable hands,” Black said. “My hope is that he will shine a bright light on the unexpected ways some in our family built ‘impossible’ bridges across great political divides.”
The book, published by Knopf in April, recounts how the stories Black grew up with in the South helped him become a storyteller in his own right. That includes his personal story,...

It might be hard to believe, but Angela Bassett has never won an Emmy before. She’s now her fifth nomination after making the Best Narrator lineup for her work on Nat Geo’s “The Flood.” If she prevails, not only will she get her first statuette, but she and husband Courtney B. Vance will join the club of Emmy-winning married couples.
Vance has a perfect record at the Emmys, converting his first nomination into a win in 2016 in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for his performance as Johnnie Cochran on “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” He gave a brief but memorable speech in which he dedicated the award to his wife of now nearly 22 years — or “the woman that rocks my chain.” #truelove
Bassett’s previous nominations were for “The Rosa Parks Story”, “American Horror Story: Coven”, “American Horror Story: Freak Show” and “Master of None”. In “The Flood,...

Meryl Streep rarely stars on television. But when does, she wins Emmys.
To date the acclaimed actress has won three Emmy Awards, same as her Oscar tally, but she’s on track to win her fourth next year thanks to “Big Little Lies.” Streep plays Mary Louise in the HBO drama’s second season, a no-nonsense woman who comes Monterey to sniff out clues about her son Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgard) untimely death. She clashes with all of the Monterey 5: Nicole Kidman (as Celeste), Reese Witherspoon (as Madeline), Shailene Woodley (as Jane) and Laura Dern (as Renata).

Refresh For Updates The Ellen backlash – social media users objecting, vociferously, to DeGeneres’ possibly deal-making support for Kevin Hart as Oscar host – puts Hollywood in a tricky spot. While some stars will no doubt agree (at least privately) with Lgbtq rights supporters and activists who are condemning the talk host’s defense of Hart as a betrayal, speaking out against the beloved DeGeneres won’t be easy.
So far, Hollywood’s usual tweeters are mostly keeping quite (Deadline will update this post periodically throughout the day). William Shatner voiced his support for Hart and DeGeneres, as did comedian Rob Schneider.

Liev Schreiber was something of a surprise nominee in 2015 when he landed a Best Drama Actor nomination for “Ray Donovan.” After three consecutive bids for his gritty Showtime series, pundits assumed he would easily return to the race this year. The TV academy shockingly snubbed the performer in this major category, but Schreiber still has a great chance to take home his first career Emmy Award. For the second year in row, Schreiber is nominated in the Best Narrator category. He contends for his work narrating the HBO boxing series “24/7,” for the episode “Canelo/Golovkin.” The installment helped trace the backgrounds of Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin ahead of their middleweight championship fight.

Meryl Streep may look like a kindly grandmother in this first photo from the second season of “Big Little Lies.” But looks can be deceiving. She plays Mary Louise Wright who has come to town to get answers from her daughter-in-law Celeste (Nicole Kidman) about the death of her son Perry (Alexander Skarsgard). Expect plenty of fireworks as these two women face off.
For the first time on-screen, Streep is playing a character with her real first name. Likewise, she is acting opposite Kidman for the first time. While they both appeared in “The Hours” back in 2002, they didn’t share the screen. Kidman won the Oscar for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf while Streep was snubbed by the academy. We might also see Streep working with another Oscar winner, Reese Witherspoon, who both stars and produces in this Emmy-winning HBO series.

HBO announced back in December that the Emmy-winning miniseries would return for a second season, with nearly all of the original cast since signing on to return, including Kidman and fellow Ep Reese Witherspoon.
David E. Kelley will write and executive produce Season 2, which will be based, in part, on story by “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty. Andrea Arnold will direct all seven installments.

Presenting the Supporting Actresses of '44. A low class maid, a French baroness, a patriotic nurse, a weary shop-owner and a "Chinese" village woman battled it out for Oscar gold. We're here to re-judge that contest.
The Nominees
from left to right: Barrymore, Jones, Lansbury, MacMahon, Moorehead
Oscar was still besotted with recent nominees Jennifer Jones & Agnes Moorehead (both on their quick second nominations) but joining the party were two veterans who'd never been honored (Ethel Barrymore & Aline MacMahon) and one very fresh face who would go on to an enviably long cross-platform showbiz career, now in its 73rd year (!) -- Angela Lansbury in her film debut!
Notable supporting roles for women that the Academy passed over in 1944 were Mary Astor (Meet Me in St Louis), Shirley Temple (Since You Went Away), Dame May Whitty (Gaslight), and Joseph Hull & Jean Adair (Arsenic & Old Lace). Can you think of any others?...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences called an urgent board of governors meeting Saturday to decide what to do about one of their most storied members, Harvey Weinstein, who perhaps more than anyone in Hollywood today is identified with the Oscars.
This week the Weinstein Company’s ousted co-owner landed on the cover of Time Magazine after revelations in the New York Times, The New Yorker and beyond about his 30-odd years of bad behavior as an alleged sexual predator, abuser, harasser and rapist. His own brother Bob has gone on the record calling him “sick and depraved.”
While the London and New York police departments have opened up cases on Harvey Weinstein, he has yet to be arrested, charged, or indicted. The Producers Guild of America postponed a recent meeting to give them privacy in their deliberations over his ongoing membership. BAFTA suspended him. UK politicians urged...

How to Survive a Plague director David France explores the heroic life and tragic death of an often forgotten leader of the gay rights movement in this illuminating, if scattershot, film
One of the many awful decisions made in Roland Emmerich’s punishingly tone-deaf 2015 turkey Stonewall was the positioning of a fresh-faced “straight-acting” white twink as the face of the burgeoning gay rights movement in 1960s New York. In an attempt to make an unavoidably queer story more hetero-accessible, Emmerich became part of a tradition of covering up the vital groundwork done by the trans community for the rest of the Lgbtq population.

Ascending queens Elizabeth (“The Crown”) and Victoria (“Victoria”) face off in the Emmy race for Series Original Dramatic Score, while old Hollywood (“Feud: Bette and Joan”) counters Russian classicism (“Fargo”) for Limited Series, Movie, or Special Dramatic Score.
Meanwhile, political (“House of Cards,” Taboo”) and survival overtones (“Planet Earth II” and “A Series of Unfortunate Events”) clash in the Series category, as well as war (“Five Came Back,” “The White Helmets,” “Suite Française”) and culture (“O.J.: Made in America”) in the other category.
Not surprisingly, the odds are with Rupert Gregson-Williams (“The Crown”) and last year’s “Mr. Robot” winner, Mac Quayle (“Feud”), for their respective retro scores. While Williams reached for orchestral nobility, Quayle went for more orchestral glam.
“The Crown” — “Hyde Park Corner” (Rupert Gregson-Williams)
The score for showrunner Peter Morgan’s drama about the rise of Elizabeth II (nominated Claire Foy) was all about restraint, given her sense of calm.

Exclusive: Wme has signed Laurent Bouzereau, the author and filmmaker who most recently co-produced and directed Netflix’s Five Came Back. The three-part, three-hour documentary series intriguingly chronicled the not-so-well-known efforts of five iconic Hollywood directors — William Wyler, John Huston, George Stevens, Frank Capra and John Ford — who put their careers on hold to help create propaganda films during World War II. The series hails from Amblin Television based…...
