How does one make a documentary about David Bowie, a prolific musician who frequently reinvented himself as a performer, sound great? That was the challenge facing the Emmy-nominated sound crew behind Brett Morgen’s “Moonage Daydream.”
“He’s a unique artistic genius,” points out re-recording mixer David Giammarco. “How do you do something like we’ve never seen before?”
Giammarco worked with fellow nominee Paul Massey and Morgen, writer-director-editor-producer on the documentary, to navigate their way through telling Bowie’s story. Morgen’s vision was not to use talking heads or a narrator.
Instead, he tells the story through archival footage made up of clips, interviews and performances.
Essentially, Bowie is telling his own story in the documentary. And it’s not a conventional bio either; rather, Morgen takes audiences on a musical odyssey. The director spent four years on his assemble and edit. It took another 18 months to construct the ambitious soundtrack.

To understand why “Ford v Ferrari” received Oscar nominations for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, all your have to do is listen.
Thanks to three key members of the film’s nominated sound team who spoke with IndieWire — supervising sound editor Donald Sylvester, re-recording mixer and sound designer David Giammarco, and re-recording mixer Paul Massey — IndieWire can share two videos that provide a first-hand demonstration of their work.
Already, the film has swept the sound guild ceremonies: At this year’s Mpse Golden Reel Awards (the guild award for sound editing), it won the Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing for Effects and Foley. At the Cinema Audio Society (the guild awards for sound mixing), “Ford” took the top prize of Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing.

While on the surface, director James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari” is a story about racing, at the heart of it is a character-driven piece about a renegade named Ken Miles (Christian Bale) and the friendship he forges with Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) as he chases a lifelong dream. For the sound team, the characters of the story were far more important than the mechanics around them.
For production sound mixer Steven Morrow, the focus was capturing the dialogue and emotional arc of the characters. While post would record the brunt of the sound effects Morrow detailed a baseline for them to follow. Special microphones were used to record the dialogue during the intense racing scenes.
“We used Dpa 60 lavaliers both on the actors and for planting on the vehicles,” says Morrow. “You wouldn’t normally use those mics for dialogue scenes as they’re reserved for jet-engine-level noise, but...

“1917” and “Ford v Ferrari” split the top sound editing prizes Sunday night at the 67th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. “1917” took Dialogue/Adr and “Ford v Ferrari” scored for Effects/Foley. The Elton John musical fantasy, “Rocketman,” earned Musical honors and “Jojo Rabbit” topped Music Underscore.
The other Feature awards went to “Parasite” (Foreign Language), “Toy Story 4” (Animation), and “Echo in the Canyon” (Documentary).
This sets up a competitive sound editing Oscar race between Sam Mendes’ innovative, continuous-shot World War I drama and James Mangold’s thrilling race car biopic. “The absence of visible edits meant it would have been easy to be overwhelmed with sound at times, never being able to cut to a different location to reset,” said Oliver Tarney, supervising sound editor of “1917.” “We worked hard at making sure there were always multiple layers of detail in the work we were doing.

With giant interstellar battles, historic car races and intimate moments with iconic performers on the line, the sound teams behind many of the year’s best films stretched to design next-level soundscapes.
Live performances just about always prove tricky, but Adrian Bell, production sound mixer for “Judy,” was able to find things in them that became essential to telling the story of fading icon Judy Garland.
“The aim is to make the performance look completely believable, that the music and vocals are being performed right there in the location,” Bell says. “Some of the challenges here included mixing some of our work with the pre-recorded music and vocals that had been laid down before we started filming. There are also various nuances within a performance, which makes the song come alive, such as breaths, footsteps, pauses in the song, microphone-handling noise and crying. Despite not being nominated for Best Director, Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle managed to pull off what we thought was the impossible (our Leora Heilbronn has pegged the drama as the film that should win, but favored Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy as the best bet) winning Best Motion Picture at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards (a.k.a Canadian Oscars). If the out of synch supposed “live” telecast wasn’t bad enough (all awards including the winning film were announced almost one hour prior to on twittersphere), the show’s producers gave Gabrielle winning producers Luc Déry and Kim McCraw the equivalent of end of toilette paper roll in terms of time.
The voters also choose Gabrielle‘s Gabrielle Marion-Rivard as Best Actress in a Leading Role, while the heavily favored Enemy grabbed five awards, Best Direction for Villeneuve, Best Original Score for the excellent Danny Bensi/Saunder Jurriaans pairing , Best Editing,...

The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.
It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.
Here's the full list of nominees with the winners in bold.

Crowded House said it best in the lyrics “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream its over.” Yes, the awards season officialy came to an end tonight at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. Tears, jubilation, substance and style were all memorable moments at the 84th Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s shenanigans earlier on the red carpet and no huge upsets, Cirque du Soleil’s performance was the highlight of the evening.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.

Tomorrow is the day where the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences celebrates the movies. We’ve waited all year and its finally here. By the time host Billy Crystal delivers his last punchline and concludes the 84th Academy Awards, the evening will have seen many celebrity-presenters appear on the Oscar stage at the Kodak Theatre.
Here’s my predictions for Hollywood’s big night.
Actor in a Leading Role
Demián Bichir in .A Better Life.
George Clooney in .The Descendants.
Jean Dujardin in .The Artist.
Gary Oldman in .Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Brad Pitt in .Moneyball.
Clooney’s performance was like none other he’s given before and with Slumdog Millionaire, Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Fox Searchlight is on a roll. However, The Artist’s Dujardin will take home his first Academy Award.
Possible upset – Brad Pitt is an all around good guy...

On Saturday, "Hugo" won top award from the Cinema Audio Society. While the winner of this award has gone on to claim the Best Sound Mixing Oscar only three times in the past decade, two of those instances were in the last three years. The other Oscar champs had at least been nominated by the Cas. "Hugo" marks the third nomination for John Midgley and the fifth for Tom Fleischman. Neither has won as of yet. "Moneyball" was the only other Oscar nominee to contend at the Cas. This is the fourth Oscar bid by Ed Novick, who won this category last year for "Inception," the second for David Giammarco and the first for both Deb Adair and Ron Bochar. I guess I could look at the win last night from the American Cinema Editors (Ace) for The Descendants for Best Editing in a dramatic feature as a sign we may still have an upset at the Oscars, but I think that would be overstepping my bounds. I will, however, say I think it shows The Descendants is a stronger #2 candidate for Best Picture than Hugo is as The Artist remains the clear front-runner in the Best Picture category as it also won last night for Best Editing in a comedy or musical. In the lackluster animation category Rango took the win over Puss in Boots and The Adventures of Tintin where, I guess, we could have seen Tintin win, but I'm having a hard time mustering up any kind of passion one way or another to really care. The Ace winners are listed below along with the other nominees.

The 84th Academy Awards will pay homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood. The perceived Oscar frontrunner, .The Artist,. is a black-and-white silent movie, while one of the Oscar Best Picture contenders, .Hugo,. touches upon the life of Georges Méliès and his magical .Trip to the Moon. (1902). Even Marilyn Monroe is being honored via a Best Actress nomination for Michelle Williams who played the icon in .My Week with Marilyn..
Amidst the glamour and the spectacle, this is one of the most unpredictable Oscars in recent memory. There is no clear-cut favorite. Even the awards darling .The Artist. may lose its voice on Oscar night. But I am marching forward to reveal my fearless 2012 Oscar predictions. “Moneyball” is by far the quietest movie currently up for an Oscar for best achievement in sound mixing -- notwithstanding a few crowd eruptions and literally game-changing cracks of the bat. Previously an Emmy and Golden Reel winner, Deb Adair picked up her first Oscar nod for her work on the film (along with colleagues Ron Bochar, David Giammarco, and Ed Novick). TheWrap talked with her about how a sports film that is light on sports -- and consists largely of debates in stadium caverns -- found its place as a...

A year ago in Sundance we interviewed Telefilm Canada’s Carolle Brabant who had taken the reins of Telefilm the previous March. While often the Canadian films are waiting to premiere at Cannes or Toronto. This year the number of upcoming greats which might make it to Cannes include Xavier Dolan’s latest Laurence Anyways (Isa: MK2), and Deepa Mehta’s Midnight's Children, based on a 1981 book by Salman Rushdie that deals with India's transition from British colonialism to independence and the partition of India. It won both the Booker Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1981 and was awarded the "Booker of Bookers" Prize and the best all-time prize winners in 1993 and 2008 to celebrate the Booker Prize 25th and 40th anniversary. It was also added to the list of Great Books of the 20th Century, published by Penguin Books.
Also coming up is the uncharacteristically quickly produced latest from of David Cronenberg,Cosmopolis, based on Don DeLillo’s novella and starring Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, a study of capitalism that takes place in a billionaire’s limo in a slightly futuristic New York metropolis, which since Cannes, Kinology has already presold for Canada to eOne, France to Canal+, Hong Kong to Tomson, Switzerland to Ascot Elite and the Ukraine to Top Film Distribution. 7 other Canadian features are also in the works.
From micro_scope, the producers of Incendies and Monsieur Lazhar (which makes this their second year in a row as an Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film) comes ’Inch’Allah directed by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette and which will star Evelyne Brochu as one of three women in a clinic in Jordan for Palestinian refugees.
The Canadians have already exceeded their Oscar nominations from last year where they had 4 nominations: Incendies for Best Foreign Language Film, Barney’s Version in the Makeup category (Adrien Morot). This year in the Best Foreign Film category, they have 2 films: Monsieur Lazhar and Agnieszka Holland’s In Darkness which began as a Polish/ German/ Canadian co-production and received most notably development funds from Telefilm Canada. There was no production financing because to have that the film must be in French, English or Inuit.
They also are proud of Christopher Plummer who has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Howard Shore, nominated for Best Original Score, David Giammarco for Sound Mixing for Moneyball. One of the producers for Beginners is Canadian Miranda de Pencier, born and raised in Toronto. Graduate of Canadian Film Centre. And finally there arer two animated shorts from National Film Board of Canada (Dimanche/ Sunday) from Quebec and The Wild One. All that is missing is any mention of David Cronenberg’s brilliant brainy movie A Dangerous Method (Isa: Hanway).
This Year of the Dragon looks very propitious, even more so because Carolle Brabant herself was born in the Year of the Dragon. Speaking of Chinese, Telefilm Canada is also launching a new initiative with China, China Gateway, which will take place this year at the Whistler Film Festival. Of their 57 co-production treaties the one with China will be emphasized this year.
What a difference a year makes. So much has been accomplished since our interview last year at Sundance. All we need to do now is wait and count the prizes. Inch'Allah, Ojala, Kine-Hora and ptu-ptu-ptu.

Here’s a glimpse inside the Oscar Nominees Luncheon for the 84th Academy Awards which took place in Beverly Hills, California, Monday, February 6, 2012. The 84th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. On the menu was chopped vegetable salad, roasted Asian barbecued duck, soy-mirin seared Atlantic Salmon and a trio of sorbets in a chocolate cup.
Anne Thompson reported, “Oscarcast co-producer Brian Grazer promised a classy show. Filming of the Billy Crystal intro skit is under way (along with interviews with many of the nominees) — “everyone is in the film,” he said. The Kodak Theatre stage will be dressed like an old-time movie palace to sell the theme of going out to the movies. “Seeing films in that environment is a magnifier of how you feel emotionally,” he said. “You’ll feel like...

This morning, Jennifer Lawrence and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. The winners will be announced during the televised ceremony on February 26, 2012. Let’s get right into the nominations:
Best Picture
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse
Snubs:
Bridesmaids
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Ides of March
50/50
Shame
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
The Artist and The Descendants may stack up on top alphabetically, but they’re neatly placed in this two-horse race with the B&W, silent era drama in the easy lead. An upset is possible, I suppose, but a Descendants win would be more upsetting since its one of the weakest in Payne’s career. Extremely Loud & Yada Yada comes as a huge surprise though. Chock it...

Update (January 30, 2012): Australian producer Grant Hill is one of four producers that will accept the Oscar should Terence Malick's Tree of Life win Best Picture. The film's nominees were originally listed as 'to be determined', following the Academy's decision that only a maximum of three producers would be recognised per best picture contender.
It was decided on Friday that Tree of Life represented 'extraordinary circumstances' and the rule was waived. Should the film upset popular contenders Hugo and The Artist, the Oscar will be accepted by Hill alongside fellow producers Sarah Green, Bill Pohlad and Dede Gardner.
Correction: Sound re-recording mixer Andy Nelson, who received his thirteen nomination for best achievement in sound for Steven Spielberg's War Horse, is in fact British. In 2001, Nelson received an Australian Centenary Medal for his services to Australian film production for his work on Moulin Rouge.
