Over 8,400 short films were submitted for the 2nd annual Sony Future Filmmaker Awards in Los Angeles, but only six filmmakers walked away with a win Thursday night.
148 countries were represented at the event held at the Cary Grant Theatre on the Sony Pictures Studios lot, with films competing in six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Environment, Animation, Student and Future Format.
Created by Creo and sponsored by Sony, the black tie affair hosted by “Entertainment Tonight” correspondent Denny Directo was preceded by a week-long industry immersion program and workshops with established Hollywood executives.
Winners were selected by a group of industry experts — including Sony Pictures Classics cofounders/co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, and cinematographers Rob Hardy and Kate Reid, with Unjoo Moon and Robert
Primes selecting the initial longlist. Director Justin Chadwick chaired both selection processes.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” which premiered at Cannes Film Festival on May 16.
The wait is over: Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi drama “Megalopolis” has finally premiered at Cannes Film Festival, shocking and dividing critics.
The film, a $120 million epic starring Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito and Shia Labeouf, was financed by Coppola himself — and has yet to secure a distributor in the United States. Regardless, the movie earned a 7-minute standing ovation from Cannes, as Coppola hugged Driver and Esposito and delivered an emotional speech dedicating the film to hope and family.
Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge wrote in his review that the film “is positively awe-inspiring in some places and an absolute eyesore in others, until you pull back and try to take it all in.” Though reactions have been mixed, the film was undoubtedly jam-packed with scenes that...

Paramore found clear inspiration in the Talking Heads for their 2017 album, After Laughter, so David Byrne’s new cover of “Hard Times” seems like it was destined to happen. The cover will be available for purchase tomorrow (April 20th) as part of a joint 12-inch Record Store Day exclusive vinyl, but you can stream it now below.
Byrne’s take on the song retains the tribal drums of the original, but adds a healthy dose of brass that sets it apart alongside his maudlin vocals. The result feels more celebratory than Paramore’s version, in which Hayley Williams’ sarcastic delivery gives away the reality check theme of the lyrics.

Cinematic language can be universal. Visual images and styles can be reused and interpreted for different audiences quite easily with film fans quick to pick up on the influences. Take for example the Western. John Ford influenced Akira Kurosawa; Kurosawa influenced Sergio Leone who in turn inspired a number of Italian filmmakers in creating the whole Spaghetti Western genre. This visual language then proceeded to be imported across the globe. “Yakuza Wolf” is one such beneficiary of this transnational use of cinematic language. A blending of Yakuza action with a western flourish it's now available through “Eureka Entertainment” on Blu-ray. With its lead Sonny Chiba being rediscovered we have an opportunity to look back at a role that set him on course for bigger stardom.

Camera Obscura have announced Look to the East, Look to the West, their first new album in over 10 years, out May 3rd via Merge Records. Plus, the Scottish indie pop veterans have mapped out a 2024 North American tour and shared the lead single, “Big Love.”
Led by guitarist/vocalist Tracyanne Campbell, Camera Obscura reunited with previous producer Jari Haapalainen to record Look to the East, Look to the West. The band had gone on hiatus following the 2015 passing of founding keyboard Carey Lander, but reconnected for Belle & Sebastian’s 2019 Boaty Weekender cruise and a pair of warm-up shows in Glasgow.
Donna Maciocia joined Camera Obscura on keys and vocals for those gigs, and has since become a regular songwriting partner of Campbell’s alongside founding members Kenny McKeeve (guitar and vocals), Gavin Dunbar (bass), and Lee Thomson (drums and percussion). Pre-orders for Look to the East, Look to the West are ongoing.

I’m trying to remember the title of a movie. There’s a bomber, who puts a device on public transport. If it registers a speed over… ah I forget what the exact marker was, but anyway, that arms the bomb, then if it goes below that speed…Boom! So the cops have to figure out who this guy is, and how to disarm the bomb. I think it was called “The bus that couldn’t slow down”, but it might have been a bit snappier than that.
That aside, 1975’s The Bullet Train definitely bears some striking similarities to, you know, that bus movie. Ken Takahara plays Okita, he’s 40, has lost his company in a bankruptcy and is recently divorced. Recruiting two friends (Kei Yamamoto and Akira Oda) to help set it up, he develops a plan to hold a bullet train with approximately 1500 passengers to...

The school of Yakuza films Kinji Fukasaku set up with Yakuza Papers found a number of students in the following years, implementing his frantic pace in the editing, the intense action, and the occasional news strip presentation of the real events. Sadao Nakajima is one of those “students” with his “Terror of Yakuza” following the path of the second part of the quintology, “Hiroshima Death Match”. The movie was initially banned in Okinawa because the local government feared it would incite too much interest in the local yakuza and reignite the rather violent events the story is based on.

Exclusive: Here’s a fun one uniting three screen greats. Oscar winner Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) are set to star in Western thriller Dead For A Dollar from legendary filmmaker and western aficionado Walter Hill (The Warriors).
The film will mark Waltz’s first Western since his memorable performance as Dr Schultz in Django Unchained, for which he won his second Oscar. This time around he’ll also be playing a bounty hunter.
Myriad Pictures is launching international sales for the hot package at this week’s Cannes virtual market.
Hill will write and direct the feature which is set in New Mexico Territory, Chihuahua, in 1897. The story will follow Max Borlund (Waltz), a famed bounty hunter, hired to find and return Rachel Price, the politically progressive wife of Nathan Price, a successful Santa Fe businessman. Paradise Square, the original musical from a creative team that includes Moisés Kaufman, Bill T. Jones, Craig Lucas and Black 47 singer Larry Kirwan, will begin a limited, month-long pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago on Nov. 2.
Casting and details about a Broadway engagement will be announced shortly.

Considering that Johnny Cage was based on Jean-Claude Van Damme it’s pretty fitting that this Deepfake of Mortal Kombat was created using Jcvd’s face. No offense to Linden Ashby, who played the role quite well, but Jcvd was supposed to be the original Cage since the video game novel was based on Jvcd’s appearance in Bloodsport. But unfortunately, van Damme was tied up playing Colonel Guile in the Streetfighter movie was actually much worse than Mortal Kombat, so Ashby was the go-to guy. The Deepfake shows that the effect probably would have been about the same, but obviously van Damme’s

In the mid-2000s, Miko Marks was trying to make a serious run at mainstream country stardom. She put out a pair of albums, 2005’s Freeway Bound and 2007’s It Feels Good, posing in a cowboy hat for both cover images, and showed herself to be a skillful singer who was cutting the kind of palatable country-pop that worked at country radio.
In hindsight, she realizes she was naïve about how Music Row might receive a black woman singing country music.

Generations makes a strong case that Arcade Fire’s second most famous Butler brother, Will, could be the group’s pop mastermind with its quirky, upbeat rockers about modern life. He opens the record with “Outta Here,” which he built with fuzzy analog keyboards and smartypants lyrics like, “Had enough bad news/Had enough of your generation.” It recalls Eno and Bowie in its synthiness but also Spoon in its sunny determination. “Close My Eyes” feels a bit like Suicide pretending to be a power-pop band with its quivering keys...

Charley Crockett evokes the loneliness and isolation of the present moment in the new video for “Welcome to Hard Times.” Released on Wednesday, the song serves as the title track of the country troubadour’s new album, due out July 31st via Thirty Tigers.

Action/fantasy horror can be very hit or miss. I have to say in general I quite enjoy it as a sub genre. Movies like the Underworld, Resident Evil and Blade franchises or Dracula Untold, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and The Last Witch Hunter are all pretty entertaining films. Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t ‘great’ movies but when kept at about ninety minutes, they’re an enjoyable and fun watch. So despite its awful title, this is what I expected from Angels Fallen.
It is clearly influenced by the movies mentioned above but does not have anywhere near the budget. A budget that it very much needs to pull off its ideas.

Quentin Tarantino celebrated the art of screenwriting during his induction into the Final Draft Hall of Fame Tuesday night at the Paramount Theatre in Hollywood.
The clearly delighted Tarantino, who scored Oscar nominations for writing, directing and producing “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” revealed filmmaker Walter Hill was his inspiration to become a screenwriter.
“Walter was one of my biggest heroes growing up,” he said. “I had only read two scripts and they were so effing dry. But when I read ‘Hard Times,’ it wasn’t just description. It wasn’t just a blue print for how to do the movie. I was supposed to make the movie in my mind. When the script was over and I put it down, I saw the movie.”

As an added bonus, “Good Omens” showrunner Neil Gaiman created a mini-movie cold open at the start of Episode 3 (“Hard Times”) to introduce the bromance through the ages between demon Crowley (David Tennant) and angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen). For 28 minutes, the Biblical odd couple traipse through Noah’s Ark, The Crucifixion, The Globe Theater, The French Revolution, and more, to fraternize and to rescue one another from dangerous situations.
But for production designer Michael Ralph and costume designer Claire Anderson, it provided opportunities to go wild with the historical settings and period wardrobes. “It was a lot to stitch together and a very interesting journey to try to connect the dots so it all related visually,” said Ralph. “You only had a minute or two to have an impact and what we had to produce had to be strong enough as an emotional moment.”

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Good Omens Episode 3.
A good friendship lasts a lifetime. A divine friendship lasts several.
And to illustrate the enduring bond between Good Omens‘ central pair — the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley — the show’s own Powers That Be decided to give them a centuries-spanning, nearly half-hour cold open at the start of Episode 3.
The sequence in “Hard Times” is one of the Amazon Prime adaptation’s few diversions from Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel, but “everything that’s in that 28-minute section is actually inferred and implied in the relationships that are in the book,...

Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day 2U is a fascinating deviation from his 2017 Groundhog Day slasher riff that first laughed in death’s face. Landon and co-scribe Scott Lobdell distance themselves even further from hardcore horror treatments – almost entirely ditching Happy Death Day’s tepid subgenre commitment – and head into blackened Weird Science territory. Dare I say it’s more a quantum physics time paradox laugh like something from a futuristic Scooby Doo episode? Happy Death Day 2U almost outright abandons terror to design a more emotionally-driven teen comedy that just so happens to feature an early death sequence montage.
Oddly enough though – coming from someone who wasn’t overly keen on Happy Death Day – the switcheroo actually works.
Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) has a new lease on life after the events of the first film. She’s dating nice-guy Carter (Israel Broussard), has got rid of psycho killer Lori...

Whitey Morgan is not really thinking clearly.
“I’ve been drinking margaritas for three fucking days,” he says, calling from outside the Airbnb in Pensacola, Florida, that he rented for a few rest days on tour. He and his band, the 78’s, have been hanging out there grilling, consuming alcohol and relaxing before heading back out on the road to support his new record, Hard Times and White Lines, and he’s feeling a little of that post-tequila fog.
Booze and beach-bum cloudiness aside, clear thinking — in the vein of...

At this point, the honky tonk formula is battle-tested and mostly impregnable; stick to the rules, and you’re bound to come out with something solid. Whitey Morgan has quietly been a leading modern practitioner of the form, even though he comes from Michigan, not Nashville, and he has not been appointed a savior of tradition by the increasingly powerful Americana lobby. Over the course of three albums, especially 2010’s Whitey Morgan and the 78’s, he covered the usual topics — breaking laws, breaking hearts and various forms of alcohol-assisted tomfoolery...

For a purist like Whitey Morgan, country music is just as much tear-in-your-beer balladry as boot-scootin’ boogie, and on his tortured new track “Honky Tonk Hell” — the first to be debuted from the Michigander’s next LP, Hard Times and White Lines — Morgan finds himself in a special kind of purgatory.
The new album is the first from Morgan and his band, the 78’s, since his Sonic Ranch LP was released in 2015. Opening track “Honky Tonk Hell” is a gruff, gritty tune that sets a bleak tone for Hard Times...

“Black-ish” with an upper-case B is an African-American sitcom loved by both black and white viewers. But “black-ish” with a lower-case b doesn’t always fly with African-Americans when it comes to their tunes.
In both forms, the word refers to a lack of black cred, whether it’s for talking too white, acting too white, or being too white, accusations Drake haters have hurled at the rapper since he hit the hip hop scene. Some in the African-American community criticize him for making music that’s as much pop as hip hop and promoting a soft image. In other words, he’s not “black” enough.
Still, Drake is arguably the most successful rap star of the past five years. On June 29, his fifth studio album “Scorpion” set a Spotify record for the highest number of global streams in a single day. Over the course of the sprawling 25-track double album,...

It’s a hard time to be a DC fan right now. Despite the fleeting high from the one good movie in the company’s shared cinematic universe – Wonder Woman – there isn’t much to celebrate. Say what you will about Man of Steel’s level of quality, but it completely missed the point of being a Superman movie. Batman v Superman was a shattering disappointment for even the most die-hard DC fans and Suicide Squad was somehow markedly worse. And with every fresh announcement coming out of parent company Warner Bros, the hope of DC somehow turning this mess around seems
