With the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” on May 10, this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar race just got a lot more interesting. That’s because we’re almost guaranteed to get three, possibly even four, movies in the race that are follow-ups to previous Visual Effects nominees. “Apes” is likely to be the fourth movie in its franchise nominated for the innovative performance capture used to help create the film’s photo-realistic apes. Three previous films, starring Andy Serkis, were nominated for Oscars in the category in 2011, 2014, and 2017, but none of them won.
The work done by director Wes Ball and his team has made “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” a serious contender in multiple below-the-line categories, not just visual effects. Its production design and sound are equally impressive. But the academy branch that’s most likely to be impressed will be the...

When Gene Roddenberry began developing the screenplay for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1975, expectations for how a science fiction film could look and feel were rapidly shifting. "2001: A Space Odyssey" offered moviegoers a 70mm trip to outer space, while "The Omega Man," "Soylent Green," and the "Planet of the Apes" series fed off the sociopolitical tumult of the times to thrust audiences into dystopian futures of our own foolish making.
Where did a show that was, at its core, a dream of racially and ethnically inclusive space exploration fit in an era of consciousness-raising spectacle and pessimistic earthbound forecasting? Though the series had failed to enthrall a sizable enough viewership to survive more than three seasons during its initial run on NBC in the late 1960s, "Star Trek" had become popular in syndication with 1970s couch potatoes. There was clearly a hunger for more, and there weren't any...

When Johnny Depp Earned Over $50 Million For A Brief Cameo(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Johnny Depp is known for playing quirky characters, and he even makes them iconic, be it his Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Edward Scissorhands, or Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In the 2000s, Depp was at the peak of his career, and the makers did not hesitate to pay millions to get him for a role, especially if it was a fantasy film, even for a few minutes. This leads us to the time when he took home a staggering amount for his role in Alice in Wonderland.
Johnny Depp is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, and that is for a reason! He is a versatile actor and brings a lot of charm to every role he appears in. But things took an ugly turn when he...

He conquered the world with The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. But what about the first few films from Peter Jackson?
At the 2004 Academy Awards, The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King swept the board with 11 statuettes, equalling the records previously set by Ben-Hur and Titanic. When collecting the award for Best Picture, director Peter Jackson made a passing reference to the two films with which he had started his career in the late 1980s - Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles - commenting that they had been “wisely overlooked by the Academy at the time”.
Despite Jackson’s dismissal of his own early work, these films represent more than a curious historical footnote; they are the first steps from one of the most important blockbuster film-makers of the last two decades. When viewed from the lofty gaze of hindsight, they are not only...

Written by Stephen King and directed by George A. Romero, Creepshow has a special place in many horror fans’ hearts, and this summer, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Pictures will pay tribute to the beloved horror anthology with their Blu-ray release of 2007’s Just Desserts: The Making of Creepshow. Ahead of its July 12th Blu-ray release, we have a look at the film’s release details, cover art, and a set of behind-the-scenes photos:
Press Release: For years, fans have been clamoring for the definite word on the making of George A. Romero’s classic 1982 horror anthology Creepshow, the first of his many big screen collaborations with best-selling novelist Stephen King. Now 34 years later, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Pictures join forces to bring this terrifyingly entertaining story to life in Just Desserts: The Making Of “Creepshow”, a special edition Blu-ray release documenting one of the greatest horror films ever made!

Here you have another Scream Factory title, which will be judged a little harsher than usual. MGM recently released its own Blu-ray version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and for the most part, it was just fine. In addition to the MGM Region A release, there was also an Arrow Video-released Region B Blu-ray, which most fans have considered the “definitive edition” until now. I have nothing but respect for Arrow Video. They are basically the Criterion of B-movies right now. But I think this new TCM Blu-ray may just trump their excellent release, at least ever-so-slightly in the Pq department. As for the movie itself, I’m a big fan, always have been. I know it’s a divisive title among fans because it abandoned the relentlessly terrifying tone of the first movie, and opted for a more humorous approach, but it’s utterly fascinating. That opening scene is...

Chicago – Scream Factory refuses to let up, releasing four more stellar Blu-ray editions that will just add to the debt of hardcore horror fans. Not all four of these films are great on their own but they’re all great Blu-ray releases, full of special features and with some truly amazing transfers. Genre junkies, like myself, should own all four, even “Psycho III.” Sorry. Maybe you can take out a loan. It’s not my fault. Don’t shoot the horror messenger.

For all our MoreHorror readers recovering from the tryptophan induced stupor we call Thanksgiving, boy do we have a treat for you. What better way to celebrate the recent release of the Evil Dead II: 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray than to talk to the man behind the special effects and some of the most amazing visuals in horror movie history: the legendary Greg Nicotero.
If you've seen little productions like Day of the Dead, In the Mouth of Madness, From Dusk 'Til Dawn, Scream, The Cell, Masters of Horror, The Mist and most recently The Walking Dead than you are very familiar with his enormous body of work. I was fortunate enough to chat with the man who literally changed the face of horror before he had to run off to celebrate turkey day.

Update:Hello! I told you I would be back if I found more information, and - lo and behold - more information has come to light. Information that would make me look like a bigger idiot than I am (I concede to some idiocy), but information based on the truth. Because of some issues with my laptop battery, I was only able to disseminate a tweet when I first learned the truth about the mask below. Now that I'm up and running again, here's the scoop's evolution: after two hours of internet searching, I let the story lie so I could go check out "The Losers" and some other stuff this weekend, meanwhile - on the internet ranch - the once-and-future-Tmnt-mask started making the blog rounds, ending up on Buzzfeed yesterday! (I'm a little sad that I didn't bring something more substantial to Buzzfeed, but this is how the hive mind works). Thankfully,...

One thing I hate about Blu-ray is the damn region locking that plagued DVD. Before importing a disc, I've got to do plenty of research to ensure it'll work in my player, which sometimes leads to depressing news. While we have a pretty sweet version of Day of the Dead in high definition already thanks to Anchor Bay, today's announcement of a UK edition sounds even sweeter!
Frankly, this announcement is so cool that I'm listing every word here:
Specially commissioned for this 25th Anniversary Blu-ray release of Day Of The Dead, the world exclusive 24-page comic ‘Day Of The Dead: Desertion’ is written by ‘Hack/Slash Meets Re-Animator’ co-writer, Barry Keating, and ‘Halloween: Nightdance’ creator, Stefan Hutchinson, with artwork by ‘Halloween: The First Death of Laurie Strode’ illustrator Jeff Zornow. Stefan Hutchinson has given us a look at the cover for his upcoming comic book "Day of the Dead: Desertion." The "Halloween: Nightdance" scribe collaborated on this title with Barry Keating ("Hack/Slash Meets Re-Animator") and illustrator Jeff Zornow ("Halloween: The First Death of Laurie Strode"). It chronicles the origins of Day of the Dead 's Bub and the comic is being packaged with the forthcoming Day of the Dead Blu-Ray special edition arriving in the UK on March 29. Two all-new documentaries were commissioned for this epic release. In Joe of the Dead (directed by Calum Waddell) actor Joe Pilato talks about his career in movies - beginning with his work in the little-seen Pittsburgh horror outing Effects (which also featured...
