Director Wade Allain-Marcus reflected on his experience directing his new film, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, in his new uInterview.
Inspired by the 1991 film of the same name, the movie follows a teenager whose summer plans are canceled when his and his siblings’ babysitter unexpectedly dies.
Allain-Marcus thought back on the process of remaking a film, “For me when I read the script, being aware of the original but not necessarily holding it precious, was just sort of like, ‘Oh this could be a really interesting remix of the original by using some of the tent-poles from the first one and then being able to kind of take off from there.'”
When asked about the experience on set, Allain-Marcus revealed, “We shot this film in 22 days, in the midst of the writer’s strike, so a lot of that, emotionally and physically, was quite challenging. A lot of...

Delroy Lindo is heading back to the big screen.
The actor, who in recent years has starred in Hulu’s Unprisoned and appeared in Netflix’s The Harder They Fall, has closed a deal to join Michael B. Jordan in the untitled supernatural horror thriller that Ryan Coogler is directing for Warner Bros.
Little is known about that project — and what is known has yet to be confirmed by either the studio or Coogler. Insiders say the feature is set in the Jim Crow-era South, and possibly involves both vampires and Southern supernatural traditions. Jordan may be playing dual roles — as twin brothers.
Lindo’s part is being kept in the coffin but one source describes it as having a musical element to it. The feature is gearing for shoot later this spring in New Orleans, and recently cast Jack O’Connell as a villain.

On March 12, 2023, Ruth E. Carter won her second Academy Award for her work on the costumes of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." It was Carter's second Oscar win after 2018's "Black Panther," making her the first costumer in history to win Academy Awards for a movie and its sequel. Her wins are both well-deserved. Extrapolating from the fictional country originally found in the pages of Marvel Comics, "Wakanda Forever" constructed the clothes and uniforms worn by the citizens of a high-tech central African nation that, thanks to their access to a rare miracle metal and an equally rare super-powered flower, allowed them to advance centuries beyond the rest of the world. Carter designed the clothes for Wakandan royalty, the royal guard, and the country's civilians. She also had to evoke Wakandan funerary rights, as the film opens with the funeral of the original Black Panther. Carter has said that Wakandan dress...

Dressed in a red Fdny shirt and matching cap, Spike Lee recalls over Zoom his earliest memory of the World Trade Center: “My first thing was the bombing in 1993.” After a beat, he goes back further. “They were shooting ‘King Kong,’ and there was an ad in the Daily News. They needed extras for the final scene and I was there.” Lee appears in the Dino de Laurentiis-produced 1976 film as one of the 5,000 extras who see Kong fall to the ground from the towers.

Of all the surprises and snubs from Monday’s Oscar nominations, the most shocking was perhaps Delroy Lindo being left out of the Best Actor category for his work in Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” and man if Lee isn’t disappointed.
The director on Tuesday shared an appreciation post for Lindo as well as a sale of four limited edition posters from “Da 5 Bloods” as part of what Spike calls the “We Wuz Robbed (Again!)” collection.
“I Sincerely Want You All To Know That I Truly Appreciate The Love, Support And The Fun Of Vibin’ With Me On These Higher Frequencies Through These 4 Decades! I Know You Dig – Sho Nuff,” Lee wrote on Instagram. “Delroy Lindo may not have received an Oscar nominations yesterday but that does not take away from the impact of his work that spans decades. Spike Lee Reacts to ‘Da 5 Bloods’ Oscar Snubs with Delroy Lindo Tribute, ‘We Wuz Robbed’ Poster Sale
Most film critics agree that actor Delroy Lindo’s absence from the Best Actor pool is one of the most egregious Oscar snubs of 2021. Lindo was overlooked in the Best Actor race for his galvanizing performance in Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” which won him the Best Actor prize from the New York Film Critics Circle. Social media lit up in outrage over Lindo’s Oscar shutout, with tributes pouring in for his “Da 5 Bloods” performance (see one tribute from Barry Jenkins here). Lee himself got around to honoring his snubbed leading man a day after the Oscar nominations were announced, re-sharing a message telling fan that one Oscar snub does not define an entire career.
“This is a Delroy Lindo appreciation post,” the Instagram message reads. “Delroy Lindo may not have received an Oscar nominations yesterday but that does not take away from the impact of his work that spans decades.

Since he began his film acting career over 40 years ago, Delroy Lindo has steadily built a reputation as a well-respected and experienced performer. He has worked with such directors as Ron Howard, Tony Scott, and Danny Boyle, but his collaborations with Spike Lee have proven to be the most fruitful. His prominent roles in three of Lee’s films boosted his profile in the industry and attracted the attention of several critics groups in the 1990s, including the National Society of Film Critics.
Earlier this month, the Nsfc gave Lindo their Best Actor award for his work in the Netflix release “Da 5 Bloods,” which reunited him with Lee after 25 years. The performance also won him the New York Film Critics Circle award and a dozen more nominations from critics groups to date. After decades of putting in the work, all signs point to Lindo receiving his first Oscar nomination for what K.

Delroy Lindo goes full-tilt boogie in his extraordinary performance as Paul, a Vietnam vet and widower who is suffering from Ptsd and incredible guilt in Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods.” Especially in Paul’s monologue about two hours into the Netflix release: chopping down bamboo as he makes his way through the jungle in Vietnam, Lindo’s Paul stares into the camera as he rants, raves and rambles about his years of disappointment since the war and confesses he’s dying of cancer because of Agent Orange exposure during the conflict. He’s both terrifying and heartbreaking as he looks into our hearts and souls and informs everyone no one is going to tell him when and where he is going to die except himself.

Spike Lee’s 1995 thriller Clockers, based on the novel by Richard Price, drew some of the best reviews of Delroy Lindo’s career, but astonishingly, it has taken 25 years for the duo to reunite, for the Netflix streaming hit Da 5 Bloods, and the results are just as incendiary. Cast against type, and almost over the actor’s dead body, as a Maga-hatted Trump supporter, Lindo dominates a superb ensemble cast as Paul, a bitter, tormented Vietnam vet who reconvenes his old platoon to go looking for a cache of gold hidden in the jungles in which they once fought.
Deadline: It’s been a while since you last worked with Spike. When did you two first meet?
Delroy Lindo: I first met Spike at my audition for Malcolm X in New York. It was very, very brief. You know, it was not an introduction per se. He may have shaken my hand.

Storied filmmaker Spike Lee is the latest in a long line of auteurs to be awarded honors by the American Cinematheque.
The ceremony celebrating Lee’s more than three decade-career was presented virtually due to the ongoing pandemic. A collage of images from some of his most iconic “joints”, as well as a few personal photos of Lee with his wife Tonya, and children Satchel and Jackson and at a basketball game (presumably the filmmaker’s beloved Knicks) with Denzel Washington, served as the backdrop for the 34th annual event.
Past American Cinematheque honors recipient Jodie Foster hosted the broadcast, asking her “Inside Man” director, “It’s gotta be crazy to be honored for lifetime achievement. Does it seem like it’s been that long? Do you feel like you’re 100 years old?”
“If you love what you’re doing, you can delay Father Time,” Lee replied, “So I’ve...

Spike Lee was honored by his peers and associates Thursday as he became the 34th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award, given to a filmmaker or star who has achieved, and continues to achieve, great success in their career.
The honor, usually presented during a glitzy tribute dinner, had to go virtual this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but that didn’t stop Lee’s wide swath of admirers and colleagues from participating via Zoom and other means in the slickly produced and nicely assembled show that went off without a hitch this evening. Hosted by Jodie Foster, who previously co-starred with Denzel Washington in 2006’s Inside Man — Lee tonight recalled it as one of his personal favorites — the tribute included an innovative feature showing virtual conversations between pairs of various past artists from all fields who have worked with Lee, focusing on a specific film on which they participated.

Spike Lee is being honored with the American Cinematheque Award, and it undoubtedly encapsulates the director’s nearly five decades of artistic achievement. The award will be presented Jan. 14 in a virtual ceremony. “It’s a recognition of the body of work, and I’ve been putting in the work since the fall of 1979,” says Lee.
Previous American Cinematheque Award honorees include Amy Adams (2017), Bradley Cooper (2018) and Charlize Theron (2019).
After graduating from Morehouse College, Lee attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in the graduate film program. He has been a tenured professor and the artistic director since 2002. Lee also eyes the next generation of filmmakers and considers himself a “proud parent” when looking at all of his students, including directors Shaka King (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) and Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”).

Spike Lee will receive the American Cinematheque Award and will be honored during a virtual tribute on Jan. 14, 2021.
American Cinematheque chair Rick Nicita said the legendary director always keeps his finger on the pulse of society.
“As a cultural arts organization that celebrates the importance of film in our society, Spike Lee is the perfect choice for the Cinematheque’s annual award,” Nicita said. “Spike’s ability to perceive and depict the tone of contemporary society is shown in his movies, ranging from ‘Do the Right Thing,’ ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ ‘Malcolm X’ and ‘BlacKkKlansman’ to name only a few. He continues his outstanding output with this year’s ‘Da 5 Bloods’ and ‘American Utopia.’ We look forward with great anticipation to where he will next shine his light.”
“BlacKkKlansman,” which Lee co-wrote and directed, won the Academy Award for adapted screenplay. He was also nominated for an Oscar for directing and producing “BlacKkKlansman.

Half his face is covered by a mask. And yet, Spike Lee still gets recognized on a walk in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
On this sunny September morning, the 63-year-old director and activist is participating in a socially distanced photo shoot on the street outside his production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. As Lee stands on the corner, a dark Subaru screeches to a halt. “I’m a huge fan,” proclaims the driver from inside the car. Lee nods, but he’s accustomed to stopping traffic. A few minutes later, a FedEx driver also rolls down his window to say hello.
As we follow Lee around, he keeps an ongoing dialogue with his neighbors — it’s hard to tell if they are fans or friends (or both). He points to his watch and tells a man, “You’re running late.” This is followed by a selfie with another man sitting...

As the early rumblings of the Oscar race begin with the conclusion of Toronto and the kickoff of NYFF, Netflix is starting to set their chess pieces up for a strategic and boastful awards season. In an exclusive to Variety, Netflix has confirmed the decision to campaign, Delroy Lindo, the star of “Da 5 Bloods” from Spike Lee, in lead actor for the upcoming Academy Awards.
The 67-year-old actor has been a fixture of film and television for four decades, counting more than 40 screen credits to his name. With two career SAG nominations as part of a cast ensemble (“Get Shorty” and “The Cider House Rules”), Lindo has never received his proper recognition despite standout roles in films such as “Malcolm X.”
In “Da 5 Bloods,” Lindo plays Paul, a Vietnam veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder who travels back to Vietnam in search of the remains of his fallen squad leader.

Delroy Lindo discusses his powerful performance as Paul, a pro-Trump Vietnam vet, in Spike Lee’s new drama Da 5 Bloods, in the latest installment of Rolling Stone’s “The Breakdown.”
The actor reveals that he was at first reluctant to play the part — despite being recruited by Lee, a longtime collaborator — because of the character’s politics.
“My initial reaction to the Trumpian aspect of Paul was trepidation,” Lindo says. “I called Spike, and I let him know that I was having problems coming to terms with that aspect of the character.

After Spike Lee made a triumphant 2018 return to Cannes with “BlacKkKlansman,” which later won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, he was meant to premiere Vietnam drama “Da 5 Bloods” at Cannes 2020: It would have played out of competition as he presided over the Competition jury. Instead, the movie went straight to a June 12 Netflix release — but that low-key bow won’t keep him out of Oscar contention. The movie references “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” “Scarface,” and “Apocalypse Now,...

Delroy Lindo, for those familiar with the actor’s work, has a rich history of playing complicated father figures so authentically that by now his presence alone conjures shades of a distinctively Lindo-ian patriarch: poised, regal, all at once warm and vaguely foreboding, possessed of a thinly veiled electricity waiting to be triggered. In the nineties, Spike Lee frequently harnessed the actor’s extraordinary multivalence, first in Malcolm X (1992) as young Malcolm’s crime boss mentor, then Crooklyn (1994) where he played a jazz musician (not unlike Lee’s own father) struggling to keep his family afloat, and finally a drug lord in Clockers (1995). It is fitting that they should reunite in Da 5 Bloods in particular. This new film, released last weekend on Netflix in lieu of a theatrical release following planned-for Cannes premiere, resists easy classification, in part because—as Lee joints tend to be these days—it is...

Since Spike Lee burst onto the scene in 1986, the timeliness of his movies has been the filmmaker’s calling card — with Lee assembling a body of work that meditates on world events in a way that seems almost prescient. So, with his latest joint, “Da 5 Bloods” debuting on Netflix amid a groundswell of support for the Black Lives Matter movement after the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade at the hands of police, the filmmaker feels there’s no better moment for his film to debut.
“I cannot take any credit for this. The film was shot when it was shot; it was ready to come out when it was ready to come out. And then the world changed for everybody,” Lee tells Variety about the timing of the film’s release. “When something is repeated all the time it becomes a cliché … but that...

Delroy Lindo has officially signed on for a starring role in the ABC pilot “Harlem’s Kitchen.”
It was previously reported that Lindo was bowing out of the CBS All Access series “The Good Fight” as he negotiated a leading role in the drama project, which is described as an ensemble family drama set in a fine dining restaurant in Harlem. He has been a series regular on “The Good Fight” since it began, but will exit the show after the upcoming fourth season.
In “Harlem’s Kitchen,” Lindo will play Ellis Rice, a renowned African American chef who adds his infinite swag to fine dining at his iconic Harlem restaurant, Rice. Ellis’s kitchen is Harlem’s Kitchen, and everyone who walks through those doors is family — as long as they play by Ellis’s rules. A native of Alabama, Ellis landed in Harlem with nothing, and worked his way up through...

Arthur Jafa’s work as a cinematographer, visual artist, and cultural theorist, has captured and interrogated the history and experiences of black Americans, in groundbreaking film and visual media, for 30 years. Jafa’s work has exemplified the black aesthetic in stories of a Gullah family’s migration (the touchstone “Daughters of the Dust”); a young girl’s coming of age (“Crooklyn”); a meditation on blackness and culture (“Dreams are Colder than Death”); and the tracing of African American identity through a wide range of contrasting imagery. Through his work, Jafa aims to centralize the varied experiences of “Black being,” as an aesthetic that is entirely independent of Eurocentrism.
Oscar and Emmy nominee Bradford Young refers to Jafa (along with Malik Sayeed) as both a torchbearer and teacher of a tradition.
“They mean so much to me on multiple levels, and most of it isn’t even about the cinematography,” Young told IndieWire.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Spike Lee might not be in the awards season mix this year — after finally winning his first Oscar last year for scripting “BlacKkKlansman,” he’s deserving of a break — but the indelible New Yorker will be on hand to accept at least one huge honor in 2020. Film at Lincoln Center has announced that Lee will be honored at the 46th Chaplin Award Gala on Monday, April 27, 2020. “We are delighted to honor Spike Lee, an original and iconic New York filmmaker,” said Ann Tenenbaum, Film at Lincoln Center’s Board Chairwoman, in an official statement. “It is thrilling to welcome his bold voice into the pantheon of artists who have received the Chaplin Award.”
The Chaplin Award Gala is the organization’s most important fundraising event of the year and all proceeds benefit the organization in its mission to support the art and craft of cinema. The annual gala...

Chicago – It’s been a fast four weeks, and the 25th anniversary edition of the Black Harvest Film Festival in Chicago will have its Closing Night on Thursday, August 29th, 2019, at the Gene Siskel Film Center in the downtown Loop. The special presentation will be the 25th Anniversary celebration of Spike Lee’s “Crooklyn,” and will feature appearances by Joie Lee (Spike’s sister and co-screenwriter) and actress Zelda Harris from the film. Click here for tickets and more information.
“Crooklyn” (1994) was Spike Lee’s seventh film, right after his Oscar nominated “Malcolm X,” and is often noted as his most personal work. It focuses on a Brooklyn family in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, where Lee and his three siblings grew up (brother and sister Cinqué and Joie Lee were co-screenwriters). The film family struggles through life in 1973, with serious challenges. Spike also performs in the film, as a colorful neighborhood glue sniffer named Snuffy.

“Forrest Gump” is an easy target: A sweet movie featuring one of the most beloved movie stars of all time. It’s a slick and inviting celebration of the human spirit through the lens of a wide-eyed innocent, and utilizes technology to brilliant ends. However, “Forrest Gump” deserves scrutiny, not because its cheesy protagonist has become a pop culture punchline — after all, Forrest’s box-of-chocolates metaphor works just fine — but viewed 25 years after its release lead to box office success and six Oscars, it remains a bad movie that gets worse with age. Its lazy storytelling has very scary implications.
There’s a reason the movie became a beacon to an antiquated Republican Party when it came out in the run-up to the 1994 midterm elections: “Forrest Gump” preaches conservatism in its bones, whether its creators intended it that way or not. Through the lens of Tom Hanks’ lovable naif, who...
