Amidst the chorus of people saying that TV is better than it’s ever been, you’ll always find one person lamenting the decline of the theme song. While it’s true that the days of minutes-long intros with original songs and catchy melodies might be in the past, there’s no denying that shows are still finding memorable (and in a few cases, iconic) ways to open each episode.

Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” was a complex, nearly indecipherable musical riddle that flummoxed even its composer. Originally released as a funereal synth-laden dirge on 1984’s Various Positions, he spent years tinkering with the track during live performances in a relentless pursuit to unlock its full melodic potential. Ultimately, it was John Cale who provided the key.
The iconoclastic Velvet Underground co-founder, producer and innovative writer/arranger crafted an elegiac version of “Hallelujah” that vaulted the song into a rarefied strata of modern standards. Now he speaks to People about the song’s long journey.

Following the death of Leonard Cohen, YouTube took a look at the works of the famed musician to see how fans were celebrating his legacy. On Nov. 10, the day that Cohen passed, his video for Hallelujah -- arguably Cohen's best known song -- became the most popular video on all of YouTube with more than 5 million views.
While other Cohen songs also experienced an uptick in views in the wake of his passing, YouTube wrote in its Trends blog, such as Dance Me To The End Of Love, I’m Your Man, and So Long, Marianne, Hallelujah outpaced their growth by a longshot (see below). Hallelujah, which was initially released in the 80s but gained steam after a cover by the singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley surged in popularity after his death, is one of the most popular 80s songs on YouTube, the platform says. "I promised a couple of months ago that I wouldn't sing this song if Trump won the election," Wainwright prefaced. "And I was actually planning on not singing it tonight, but obviously, that has been trumped."

In honor of Leonard Cohen, who passed away earlier this week, Kate McKinnon kicked off the episode in character as Hillary Clinton at the piano, singing one of Cohen's most famous tunes, "Hallelujah." As a poet, songwriter and singer, Cohen had great influence over the music world, with evocative material that was frequently recorded by others. Famed musician Leonard Cohen died Thursday, according to his website. He was 82. "I get tagged as an art-song intellectual," he observed during the early 1980s. "But I've always tried to have hits." Cohen didn't have any of those. But the poet, songwriter and singer wielded enormous influence as a kind of pop music laureate, writing literate, evocative material that was admired and frequently recorded by others. In some cases they even became hits — "Suzanne" and "Bird on a Wire" for Judy Collins, for instance, or "Hallelujah" for the late Jeff Buckley — and other

Jeff Buckley likely never intended to be remembered as a cover artist, but that is the legacy the late singer, who died in 1997 with just one album to his name, has left behind. And it'll continue into 2016: NPR reports that another posthumous Buckley album, You and I, is set to be released next March, this one featuring mostly covers he recorded as reference tracks to give his producers a sense of the sound he was after for his debut album. It'll include his take on Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight," Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman," the Smiths' "I Know It's Over" and "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," and others, as well as two original songs. NPR also has a first listen of his cover of Sly and the Family Stone's 1968 classic anthem for equality "Everyday People," which Buckley has pared down considerably. Like...

So over on our Facebook Culture Catch page I asked our fans to list their five favorite living guitarists. For me, they still must be recording and touring and challenging themselves on the fretboard today, not yesterday. Our managing editor crushed me for not including Jimmy Page, who I hail as an unparelled innovator once upon a time. Hey, Steve, they have to be active and playing out right now. When was the last time Jimmy dropped a cool riff or run of memorable notes in a new song for anyone? He's certainly still capable. Here are my five favorite string benders in no particular ranking:
Nels Cline
NY-based Nels slings some serious git-action with Wilco having recorded and toured with Tweedy since 2004, but also fronts several jazz duos and trios. I was lucky to see him jam with the Allman Brothers a few years ago at the Beacon Theater.

Sudeikis, who has had leading roles in a wide range of television and film comedies over the past decade — from "Saturday Night Live" to "30 Rock" and "We're the Millers" to "Horrible Bosses" — stars opposite Rebecca Hall in "Tumbledown," a romantic comedy from the married writer/director duo Desi Van Til and Sean Mewshaw, set in rural Maine. The film derives inspiration from the stories of brilliant real-life singer-songwriters like Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley whose lives were cut short too soon. You’ll never get anywhere in the music industry without a gimmick, or so they say, but how do you get attention if you don’t have a celebrity band member or the backing of Simon Cowell?
Oh sure, there’s talent. And it helps if your songs don’t all sound the same. Plus, having a drummer who’s aware of the old joke (“How do you know there’s a drummer at the front door?” “He doesn’t know when to come in!”) is also a bonus.
But the best way of grabbing the attention of the man on the street, bar none, is to give yourselves an outrageous, eye-catching, gimmicky name. Even if you sing like Jeff Buckley, play like Hendrix and have Charlie Watts banging the drums, calling yourself The John Smith Trio is quite the faux pas.

The mainstream drew me back in a little this year, though mostly by looking back several decades to the same things I love and incorporating them into music that doesn't especially sound like 2014.
1. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra: Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything (Constellation)
I think of Silver Mt. Zion as the post-rock Pogues. They have the drunken singing and the scratchy fiddling and the punky energy, but in a sort of gritty yet sophisticated Godspeed! You Black Emperor musical context (and in fact founder/singer/guitarist Efrim Manuel Menuck used to be in Godspeed!). On their eighth album, the added intensity that appeared on their previous album is increased; this may be their best yet. Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, move over. Another actor Down Under also wants to be a musician. And when he's this endearingly strange about it, we're not complaining. Guy Pearce quietly released an album called Broken Bones in November and … well, it's actually pretty good. Pearce's fluttery, high voice has hints of Jeff Buckley and Radiohead's Tom Yorke, and the mercurial 47-year-old Australian, last seen in Iron Man 3, wrote and produced the record himself. Apparently, Pearce has been making music since 1987 but has held off on releasing anything until now. "Every time I did an interview in the late...

It’s often hard to talk about music without mentioning singers. From the flighty tones of Jeff Buckley to the earthy warble of Louis Armstrong, a great voice can help a record maintain legendary status long after its initial release. Even now, in an industry that increasingly thrives on memorable phrases and catchy, sing-a-long refrains, vocals can make all the difference between climbing to the top of the pile and fading into obscurity.
But what about the instruments behind the voices? Sometimes great tracks eschew singing altogether, relying instead on a mixture of intricate arrangements and technical prowess to make their mark on the musical landscape. Far from meaningless melodies, these tracks can weave elaborate narratives and conjure up a complex array of emotions – all without using a single word.
The power of a good instrumental is best summed up by legendary guitarist Carlos Santana: “I realised...

Touched By Grace: My Time with Jeff Buckley by Gary Lucas (Jawbone Press)
Über rock guitarist Gary Lucas's loving homage to his pupil Jeff Buckley is chock full of fascinating details and minutia that apparently doomed their creative coupling from the get-go. There is no question that they are two tremendously gifted individuals, and that by joining forces they added magic to the world. And it is also quite apparent, especially when you listen to the music they created together, that theirs was a partnership that should have afforded them both so much more. Had Mr. Buckley not taken his solo flight, leaving Mr. Lucas and their Gods & Monsters to soldier on without him, who knows what magic might have been created from their continued collaboration.
At first glance some might misconstrue that Mr. Lucas and his tome are ego-tripping -- waxing poetic about his time spent with the venerated singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley,...

After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Anton Corbijn's "A Most Wanted Man" — featuring the last leading man performance from the late Philip Seymour Hoffman — makes its way to theaters today. If it's playing on a screen near you, I urge you to seek it out. It's dry in the best possible way, a dug-in slow burn (to use an over-used phrase) that is nevertheless captured in beautiful hues. And Hoffman is absolutely fantastic; it might be one of his best performances, albeit one completely different from anything he has ever offered. It could even be something remembered by the Academy later this season, and I don't think it would be a mere final toast to an actor we lost too soon: it truly is an exhibition of how he could get under a character's skin and sing. Calling from Berlin this morning, Corbijn talked to me...

The film will culminate director Peter Jackson's 13-year-long, six-film voyage into J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, and judging by the billions of dollars both Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit have generated worldwide at the box office, there is no end to the thirst among moviegoers for all things Tolkien. With that in mind, to help fill that Gollum void, two different movie studios are planning competing J.R.R. Tolkien biopics.

Over on BBC One on Saturday night, the broadcaster was marking the 50th anniversary of a much-loved show. A cameo from Tom Baker, great actors, a glimpse into the future, plenty of touching nods to the past; It was a wonderful celebration of a fantastic British institution.
On ITV, Chico was jumping all over Caroline Flack in a warehouse.
Yes, this was the 10th Anniversary X Factor special. A randomly picked date, which happened to coincide with the events happening on BBC One. “Are there some aces up your sleeve?” is a curious sentence to hear from a group whose only obvious link between their five-strong discography is the daft name that appears on the sleeves. The only one playing tricks here is Arctic Monkeys, and they’ve pulled more than just an ace out of those sleeves this time – they’ve brought desert dune “wood groove” with lashings of Josh Homme and the spice of a Dr. Dre beat wrapped up in Sabbathy cellophane and T-Rex packaging. An album with inspirations and influences oozing from its very grooves, ‘Am’ (which could’ve been called ‘Tambourines and Falsettos’) should be a mess of cheap pastiche and imitation of the inimitable. And yet…

Box-office takings slumped in Australia last weekend as audiences seemed to tire of the almost non-stop flood of male-skewed films released since May.
So it wasn' a propitious time for the arrivals of British sci-fi comedy The World's End or Australian black comedy/horror pic 100 Bloody Acres.
The World's End, the saga of a lads' night out which is ruined by crazy, robot-like aliens, opened with $1.1 million. That's less than the debut of Hot Fuzz, the previous collaboration by director Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, which took $1.3 million six years ago. The publicity tour by Wright and the two leads might have been expected to translate to a stronger entry.
The feature debut of the brothers Colin and Cameron Cairnes, 100 Bloody Acres launched at six cinemas, taking less than $7,000 at the weekend, after one-session previews in Melbourne, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Billed as the definitive story of the greatest band who never made it, the new rock documentary "Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me" will no doubt be a must-see for serious music aficionados who already know every note the power pop group ever recorded. But what they may not be as versed in is just how Big Star came to be in the first place or how the band who inspired countless acts who would go onto great success (including R.E.M., The Replacements, Belle & Sebastian, Beck, Jeff Buckley and Flaming Lips among others), never found success of their own. Pitchfork called them “not just rock's greatest cult band [but] arguably rock's first cult band” and their music has inspired cultish devotion from its fans for decades. Even casual music fans are probably familiar with two of their songs: "In The Street" which graced the opening credits of "That 70's...

People can, at times, simultaneously feel conflicting emotions of love and hate towards any person they have an intimate relationship with, particularly their parents. While it can be difficult to understand other people’s motivations, people learn to come to terms and understand the actions others take as they mature. This is the intense motivating factor in director Daniel Algrant’s new drama, Greetings From Tim Buckley, which is based on the true story of the title musician. In the film, Penn Badgley plays Tim Buckley’s son, Jeff, who doesn’t fully understand the respect his late father garnered until he truly looks into his father’s past.

Greetings from Tim Buckley
A promising young musician visits New York for a week to headline a tribute concert. He bonds with a young woman interning at the performance space, and they run around the city being chatty, artistic, and physically beautiful together. These would be the makings of a light and romantic film, except that the young man portrayed is musician Jeff Buckley in his early twenties and the concert he's been called for honors his father, prolific and renowned musician Tim Buckley, who breezed away from Jeff's mother before Jeff was born and died at age 28 without knowing his first child.
Greetings from Tim Buckley takes place in 1991. Tim Buckley is a beloved figure with a legacy; Jeff has musical gifts and a physical resemblance to his dad, but he has not yet established his own career. Nor does he think highly of his father: to him, Tim Buckley...
