“Where were you in ’76?” The newest entrant in Criterion’s 4K disc club is Richard Linklater’s rowdy but affectionate ode to high school nostalgia, Texas-style. It’s a Bicentennial summer update of American Graffiti and in just 14 years the entire face of America has changed. Youth idealism is dead and the main rule is to avoid plans made by parents. Linklater’s graduation night sticks with kids free to roam on their own and have a wild time. He has a terrific way with performances that include a string of memorable faces that became much better-known, plus a couple of future stars.

Who would have thought that a ’90s ‘slacker’ independent filmmaker would make such a strong romantic statement? Well, it’s not all romance in the old sense. In what must be a project of love, Richard Linklater examines the ongoing love life of Jesse & Céline, in three movies spread across eighteen years. The conversations are as free- flowing as are the cameras roaming through European back streets. Thanks to the commitment of Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, the in-depth relationship seems real.

Premiering at Sundance 25 years after his seminal second feature film, Slacker, Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny, produced for the PBS series American Masters, is the kind of documentary that requires little introduction. Borrowing its title from the opening moments of his Waking Life — a film that itself represented a rebirth for the Austin-based filmmaker following his second studio feature The Newton Boys — and combining behind-the-scenes footage from many of Linklater’s films (from Slacker to his upcoming Everybody Wants Some) with a history of Austin’s independent film scene, as developed by Linklater and the Austin Film Society, the picture reflectively weaves together a history of a master filmmaker whose work is squarely interested in the passage of time. The picture includes commentary by the late Siskel and Ebert, along with critic / scholar Kent Jones and, very briefly, Kevin Smith.

2016 has gotten off to a brutal start for great British entertainers. As the world gets over the death of David Bowie a few days ago, it has been set in shock again as acting legend Alan Rickman has died in London.
Rickman had been suffering from cancer and his death was confirmed on Thursday by his family. It's the worst kind of coincidence - Bowie and Rickman were 69 years old and passed after battling cancer, and a week before that British musician Lemmy also passed away from cancer just days after turning 70.
Rickman's distinct features and immediately identifiable diction were admired by generations of actors and made him synonymous with playing antagonists - something he famously wasn't a fan of as he preferred to play the dashing leading man role which he did manage to do in some of his work.

30 Rock star Tracy Morgan has opened negotiations to join Lee Daniels’ Richard Pryor biopic, where he’ll be assuming the role of comedy icon Redd Foxx, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In what would be his first major role since the serious accident last year, Morgan is in line to play the brash yet loveable comedian, who opened the industry door for Pryor by recruiting him to be his opening act at a small-time comedy gig, before going to become a fixture of hit NBC comedy Sanford and Son between 1972 to 1977. Honorees this year include famous Texans Tommy Lee Jones, Guillermo Del Toro, Bonnie Curtis and Luke Wilson, alongside a posthumous tribute to Austin film guru L.M. Kit Carson. Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” will also receive a special award. But Linklater will have more than one reason to celebrate: This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Afs, the non-profit film organization that he co-founded with cinematographer Lee Daniel in 1985. Over the years, as Linklater’s filmmaking career has blossomed, he has retained a prominent role at Afs — shaping Austin’s thriving film culture in the process. Now, the Film Society has its own theater and a successful grant program that has so far awarded a cumulative total of $1.6 million to filmmakers. Indiewire reached out...

Anyone who saw Lee Daniel’s: The Butler last year will recall David Oyelowo’s stunning turn as a young Civil Rights activist, who clashes with his dutiful father (Forest Whitaker). The classically-trained U.K. native has since taken on a string of notable roles in films like Interstellar, A Most Violent Year and Selma - which features his lauded portrayal of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Oyelowo’s mesmerizing take on the icon manages to encapsulate his unflinching public persona and his moments of frailty. King may have had a gift for delivering poetic calls to action but he was also surrounded by sorrow and grappled with the threat of death daily.
Directed by Ava DuVernay, Selma illustrates the organization and execution of the legendary walk from Selma to Montgomery that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The haunting drama marks the actor’s second collaboration with DuVernay following...

Often we put our heroes on pedestals. Yet, even the greatest men in history have made mistakes, suffered because of their personal vices and doubted themselves at the most critical junctures of their lives. Ava DuVernay's powerful new drama "Selma" tells the tale of the Selma to Montgomery marches that spearheaded the Voting Rights Act of 1965, but at its center is one historically prominent hero who finds himself at a crossroads, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After leading the nonviolent movement that brought about the passage of the civil rights act in 1964, "Selma" finds Dr. King (David Oyelowo) and his organization, the Southern Christian Leadership Council (Sclc), focusing their efforts on removing the discriminatory practices that are effectively blocking African Americans from registering to vote across a majority of the South. Following a year of trying to register voters in Selma, Alabama with little success, the Sclc decides to...

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
The good news is that now that all the singing and the farting around is done in Hobbiton and the story has kicked in good and proper, the majority of this second in Peter Jackson’s portrayal of a slim Tolkien story overblown to epic proportions is mostly action with a minimum of plot. It’s still got various story beats it has to hit of course and is very much a middle chapter, but this has a momentum which was really missing from An Unexpected Journey.
In this second Hobbit film you can start to see the stuff that was added in to pad out the two films into a trilogy with characters who do not appear in the books introduced and a weird elf/dwarf romance along with a more angsty and badass Legolas, strangely enough it doesn’t feel out-of-place. Fading Gigolo will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 19.
Read Jim Batts’ review Here. “Kudos to the film’s screenwriter…John Turturro. Fading Gigolo is a charming, sometimes heart-breaking walk on the wild side with a couple of fellas’ who are really more on the mild side.”

I am nine years old. I am lying in the back of the 1977 Plymouth van my parents are driving. It is the middle of the night, and we are leaving Dunedin on the first leg of our move to Texas. I am crying. My best friend Oli Watt, my next-door neighbor, said goodbye to me earlier in the day, and we've made promises to write and call on the phone, but I know that I am leaving behind the life that I've enjoyed up to that point and that whatever comes next, it will be different, and I am afraid, and I am sad, and I am sure that nothing will ever be this good again. I am sixteen years old. I am lying in the back of the car driven by my nineteen year old girlfriend. It is the middle of the night, and while I'm supposed to be at school in the morning,...

Two major projects involving the life and times of Martin Luther King Jr. have tried and failed to make their way into production over the course of the last couple of years. First there was the Paul Greengrass project Memphis, which was passed on by Universal and Sony alike, only to go forward as an independent picture. Then there's Selma, a project formerly headed by Lee Daniels and star David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Help, Lee Daniel's The Butler) as Martin Luther King, Jr. After many starts and stops four years later, the project is still a go with another director and Oyelowo still in the lead, and now, The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that the key role of Coretta Scott King has also been cast.
