Sophia Bush came out to the world this week and noted that she has found “real joy” during a new stage of her life.
The Chicago P.D. alum (she played Detective Erin Lindsay) says that regarding her sexuality, “the word that best defines it is queer.”
Sophia has been on television and in many films. She has also been seen on stage, including a recent play in London.
Many television viewers met Sophia as Brooke Davis on One Tree Hill. She then starred as Erin Lindsey on the One Chicago shows. She was seen on Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and the failed spin-off, Chicago Justice. Her character was even on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit four times.
Sophia played Beth in John Tucker Must Die, October in Stay Alive, and Grace Andrews in The Hitcher on the big screen.

In previous articles, we have taken a look at stars of the past we would like to see make a comeback – and there are a lot of them! It was too hard to narrow it down to just a few, so now we’ve put together another list of 80s stars we want back, including a couple of Freddy victims, some 1980s beauties we miss, and a lady we’ve only seen twice on our screens.

C. Thomas Howell became a screen sensation after his captivating performance as Ponyboy Curtis in The Outsiders (1983). However, his role in the Francis Ford Coppola coming-of-age classic was not his first movie appearance. Howell began garnering attention with his debut film role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982 and went on to secure roles in more film projects, including Red Dawn (1984), Secret Admirer (1985), The Hitcher (1986), Gods and Generals (2003), War of the Worlds (2005), and The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). On the small screen, C. Thomas Howell has appeared in prominent shows such as Criminal Minds, ER,

The first twenty minutes of the 1979 horror film When a Stranger Calls (watch it Here) really creeped out movie-goers. It stuck in their heads, earning the movie cult classic status. The rest of the running time, viewers don’t often remember so clearly. So when Screen Gems gave the greenlight to a remake, they decided to expand those first twenty minutes to feature length, stretching out the thrills and suspense for as long as possible. It was a clever idea that was brought to the screen in an entertaining way. And if you haven’t seen the When a Stranger Calls remake, this is the best horror movie you never saw. (You can watch that one Here.)

The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.
Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

Almost exactly one year ago, it was announced that Emma Roberts (Abandoned) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) had signed on to star in the sci-fi thriller The Astronaut, which would mark the solo feature writing and directing debut of Jess Varley, who previously contributed a segment to the anthology film Phobias. The Astronaut has since made it way through production, but not with Roberts in the lead. Roberts had to drop out of the project and was replaced by Kate Mara (Class of ’09). Now a first look image that shows Mara as the title character has made its way online, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.
The screenplay Varley wrote has the following synopsis: When astronaut Sam Walker (Mara) returns from her first space mission, she’s found miraculously alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. General...

Delays are bound to happen when making movies, but something was clearly wrong when Amusement was postponed not once but twice in 2008. It wasn’t long before John Simpson’s American directorial debut was removed from the theatrical schedule altogether and then later dropped on DVD that following year. Although going from the big-screen to direct-to-video is an undeserved fate in some cases, this movie’s new destination was understandable. The unfavorable feedback from an early test screening — the word “disastrous” was tossed around — forced Warner Bros to salvage the potential flop now on its hands. Nevertheless, the negative consensus hasn’t stopped Amusement from amassing a small fan base over the years; its followers focus on this panned movie’s few merits rather than its many shortcomings.
At first, Amusement looks to be an anthology; this horror movie’s first three acts are well defined and almost function as standalone short features.

2023 was a solid year for horror films, and even still, there were plenty of gems that went criminally underseen. Fortunately, because horror fans are some of the most rabid (see: passionate) fans around, even movies denied multi-million dollar ad campaigns can still find their people through word-of-mouth praise, fan art, and obsessive gushing. "The Ruins," "Jamie Marks is Dead," "Swallowed," and "Midnight Kiss" director Carter Smith's latest feature film is also his best, which is why it's such a shame that "The Passenger" (read our review here) is only now picking up mainstream attention. A thrilling two-hander starring horror fan favorite Kyle Gallner and relative newcomer Johnny Berchtold, "The Passenger" is the spiritual successor to Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher," and just as brutal.
Berchtold's Randy is not just your average fast food worker, he might as well be invisible. He's passive to the point of enduring exploitation from everyone around him,...

One of HBO’s former hot properties returns in a big way this January, as True Detective season four finally arrives on the service. Will this be a return to form for the gritty show? Well, that remains unclear, but this time around the anthology series will follow detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) as the long winter darkness in Alaska. When eight people at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, these detectives need to get on the case quickly.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

If you subscribe to JoBlo Horror Originals (which you should!), you’ve probably caught our series 80’s Horror Movie Memories. In this show, we highlight all of our favourite horror movies from arguably the greatest decade for horror, with tons of very special guests. The decade started with a bang, with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the first instalment in the Friday the 13th series, John Carpenter’s The Fog, and more. Check out our feature-length examination of 1980 here, but this week, we’re looking at 1981.
While some may think the year pales compared to 1980, they might be underestimating what’s a pretty significant year for horror. Arguably, one would call it the year of the werewolf, with the year dominated by the best werewolf movies of all time, John Landis’s An American Werewolf in London and Joe Dante’s The Howling. People say, “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” but what if what’s happening is a five-kiloton nuclear bomb and the team sent to disarm it is hungover to all hell? Welcome to Netflix‘s Obliterated trailer, featuring a misfit band of elite soldiers who, after saving the day, party like Prince told them to party like it’s 1999. The only problem is the bomb they deactivated is a fake, and the actual explosive is armed and ready to blow if they don’t get their sh*t together.
Obliterated is a new high-octane action-comedy series from directors Jon Hurwitz (Cobra Kai) and Hayden Schlossberg (Cobra Kai).
Launching November 30, Obliterated “tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs, and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The...

Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb. In Netflix‘s Obliterated, a team of decorated soldiers find themselves on the business end of a nasty hangover while trying to stop an impending disaster. Recovering from a night of drug-fueled debauchery is challenging on any front, but doing it while the survival of millions hangs in the balance? That’s what I call a rude awakening. Today, Netflix deployed a gallery of first-look images and a release date for Obliterated, a new high-octane action-comedy series from directors Jon Hurwitz (Cobra Kai) and Hayden Schlossberg (Cobra Kai).

So we thought it would be dandy to get our core staff to share with you their 10 favorite (not best) horror movies from the 80’s. Yes, it was tough on all of us to pick just 10 – but we knocked a few back and did what we could. Scroll down and peep our choices!

Not to be confused with the Spanish road trip horror of the same name, The Passenger, the new film from Carter Smith, opens with a woman, blood spurting from her eye socket crawling towards a young boy. It’s a nightmare and Randy is woken from it to start another tedious day at Burgers, Burgers, Burgers. He should have taken it as an omen and stayed home.
As they’re getting the diner ready to open one of the other employees starts harassing him, something that seems to be a regular occurrence. Benson watches in disgust before walking out to have a smoke. Then, as if something just snapped he pulls a shotgun from his car and goes back inside killing everyone except Randy whom he takes hostage.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that some may not consider to be a horror movie, but at the very least it is an “experimental psychological thriller” from a highly respected genre director. The director in question is David Lynch, and the movie we’re talking about today is the 2006 release Inland Empire (get it Here). To revisit Inland Empire with us, check out the video embedded above.
Written and directed by Lynch, Inland Empire tells the following story over the course of its 180 minute running time: Nikki, an actress, takes on a role in a new film, and because her husband is very jealous, her co-star Devon gets a warning not to make any romantic overtures — especially since the characters they play are having an affair. There’s no understating the impact that the now-defunct Macromedia Flash had on the animation industry. Sure, the cheaper production value and recycled frames resulted in a noticeable decline in quality in some areas (even if that was usually due to studios overworking animators), but it also meant more democratic access to cartooning tools and more varied creators working in the field.
This ultimately led to an explosion of offbeat projects that would have previously been unfeasible to produce on regular TV networks. The rise of widespread internet access also gave these unusual cartoons a chance to connect with international audiences, marking a unique moment in animation when independent creations could compete on near equal footing with titans like Nickelodeon and even Cartoon Network.

For most horror franchises, a decent fifth film seems to be harder to find than a Necronomicon and usually about as dumb as the guy who’d read it out loud. According to those who have seen Evil Dead Rise (now playing in theaters!), however, it looks like the franchise is now home to the rare fifth entry that actually rules. Hail to the King, baby.
It shouldn’t come as a big surprise to Evil Dead fans because this franchise doesn’t miss. Introducing time travel? No problem. Remake? Kicks ass. Fifth sequel curse? Come get some.
Now, let’s take a look at a handful of other fifth entries that have enjoyed that same rarified air. Here are in no particular order some of my favorite fifth horror movies….

A new episode of the Revisited video series went online over the weekend, and with this one we took a look back at one of the most highly regarded horror movies ever made, the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it Here)! To find out what we had to say about The Exorcist, check out the video embedded above.
Based on a novel by William Peter Blatty (pick up a copy Here), who also wrote the screenplay, The Exorcist was directed by William Friedkin and tells the following story: One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events. When young Regan starts acting odd — levitating, speaking in tongues — her worried mother seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest, however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism,...

Jesse Lee Soffer and Sophia Bush are well-known for their roles in Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med, where they play Detective Jay Halstead and Dr. Erin Lindsay respectively. Bush has gone on to star in films such as John Tucker Must Die, The Hitcher, and The Incredibles 2.
Soffer officially announced on August 30, 2022 that season 10 of Chicago Pd would be the last one for him. His final appearance was on October 5, 2022. However, he returned to direct episode 16 titled Deadlocked, which aired on March 22, 2023. This episode also marked his directorial debut.
The couple had a short relationship while starring together on Chicago P.D., but it ended almost as quickly as it started. Here is a recap of Bush and Soffer’s time together and what they are doing now.

(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)
There is not an actor in the history of moving pictures who has been more egregiously taken for granted by her industry than Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Critics have always had her back. The New York Times' Janet Maslin got it from the jump when she singled Leigh out as "the only thing worth seeing" in her film debut "Eyes of a Stranger." The better-than-average 1981 slasher film set the tone for Leigh's career in that she plays a victim. Her character is a blind-deaf mute whose condition was brought on by being kidnapped and raped at an early age. The 19-year-old Leigh projects sweetness and innocence, but this young woman is all serrated edges. Because she isn't just a victim. She's a survivor.

But just as the two try to skip town, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist studying unnatural readings below the ground. About nine months ago, we heard that Michael Bay and Brad Fuller are reviving their production company Platinum Dunes at Universal – and now Deadline reports that one of the movies we’ll be getting from the revived Platinum Dunes is the supernatural horror film Lure, with Corin Hardy (The Nun) directing. Chris Bernier (Halloween Ends) is currently writing the screenplay.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, we do know that Lure is based on the haunting of the real-life King’s Tavern, considered to be the most haunted building in all of Mississippi, with one of its tenants being the murdered mistress of one of the tavern’s original owners.
I hadn’t heard of King’s Tavern before this announcement, but Wikipedia informs that the place is one of the oldest buildings in Natchez, Mississippi, as it was first build in 1769. It’s also considered to be...

Emma Roberts (Abandoned) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) have signed on to star in the sci-fi thriller The Astronaut, which is scheduled to begin filming in Ireland later this year. This film will mark the solo feature writing and directing debut of Jess Varley, who previously contributed a segment to the anthology film Phobias.
Roberts will star in The Astronaut as the title character. The screenplay Varley has written has the following synopsis: When astronaut Sam Walker (Roberts) returns from her first space mission, she’s found miraculously alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. General William Harris (Fishburne) arranges for her to be placed under intense NASA surveillance in a high security house for rehabilitation and medical testing. One of my earliest cinematic memories came from watching the films of Jennifer Jason Leigh. The actress has given countless performances that are utterly stunning. I was utterly taken in by films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Hitcher, The Big Picture, Rush, Single White Female, and many others. And as of late, she has grown to be one of the most versatile and talented performers working today, with movies like The Hateful Eight and Possessor. Now, she performs stunningly in the second and final season of Hunters.
Speaking to someone who has long held a high spot in your list of favorite actors, it was a joy to take a moment with Jennifer. She opened up about taking on the role of Chava Apfelbaum and working with series creator David Weil. It may have been brief, but I chatted with the great Jennifer Jason Leigh. And, of course,...

We’re always excited to hear about new Nicolas Cage genre projects, and Variety reports today that Cage will star alongside Joel Kinnaman in a thriller titled Sympathy for the Devil.
Yuval Adler (Bethlehem) is directing the psychological thriller, with filming underway.
The film “follows The Driver (Kinnaman) as he finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse after being forced to drive a mysterious man known as The Passenger (Cage).”
“That sets things up for a white-knuckle ride,” Variety adds.
Luke Paradise (Lost on a Mountain in Maine) wrote the script.
“This is a tour de force featuring two incredible actors,” said producer Allan Ungar. “As an acclaimed filmmaker, Yuval has assembled the perfect cast and brought a unique and gritty vision to this film that will be sure to capture audiences.”

Mark Rosman‘s The House on Sorority Row (1982) and Stewart Hendler‘s Sorority Row (2009) feel shoved aside in their respective horror classes. Titles like Pieces, Black Christmas, and The Dorm That Dripped Blood get more frequent mentions when discussing pre-90s sorority or dormitory slashers. Remake debates rarely include Sorority Row in their reassessments of unfairly stigmatized 2000s horror revamps based on nostalgia biases (among other reasons). It’s interesting how both seem equally less popular despite their amassed cult followings after meager box office openings.
It’s almost like Hendler attempted to shake the original’s mojo by deeming Sorority Row an adaptation of Rosman’s screenplay Seven Sisters — the earlier iteration of what would become The House on Sorority Row. Don’t mind the trickiness because Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger write their re-imagining indebted to The House on Sorority Row. Maybe late-2000s remake fatigue led to...

About midway through the pandemic in 2020, after watching more films at home in just six months than I would typically watch in 12 months, I was dealing with a significant case of cabin fever. So, I would go for long drives across the many local Arizona highways late in the evenings. My steering wheel soundtrack was mostly film scores from every single decade of film throughout history. Along my many drives, through busy city lights, and out on the lonely borders of the town, I would be reminded of my love for road trip films. When a giant semi-truck refused to pass me and instead followed closely on my bumper, I remembered Spielberg's Duel. When a hitchhiker appeared out of nowhere, wearing an ankle-length black duster, I immediately thought of Rutger Hauer from The Hitcher. But the most memorable moment from these late-night cruises had to be pulling into a gas...

Welcome to a special Class of ’81 edition of Catalog From the Beyond, where I’m taking a little detour out of pure horror for a side quest into action thriller to celebrate the American film debut of the late, great Rutger Hauer. You may not associate Hauer with the horror genre specifically, but it’s hard to argue that he didn’t make quite the impression in genre films. Of course, most know him as Roy Batty in Blade Runner, and for me you’re not going to get a more memorable villain than his turn as John Ryder in The Hitcher. But it occurs to me that he also has something of a penchant for playing vampires with bloodsucker roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), Salem’s Lot (2004), multiple Dracula movies, and even a stint on True Blood. But long before he started buying prosthetic fangs in bulk, Hauer broke...

At the turn of the 21st Century, the trend for remaking horror classics really kicked into high gear, and at this stage, every recognizable property under the sun has been remade at least once. In recent years, though, the focus has shifted to ignoring continuity and instead making a direct sequel to the beloved original, which is an approach that worked wonders for David Gordon Green’s Halloween.
Not only did it score the best reviews the franchise had seen in 40 years, but it also blew the box office total of every previous installment out of the water, and Michael Myers is now back in a big way. Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake and the sequel did decent business, but they were soon swept under the rug and quickly forgotten about after any plans for a third entry were abandoned.
