Votes: 1,060,739 | Gross: $74.28M
Just the perfect film for me. I can watch it any time. It has everything a good movie should have: the right style, very good acting, unexpected events and an ending you cannot forget.
2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Director: James Cameron | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, Robert Patrick
Votes: 1,174,603 | Gross: $204.84M
The first movie I just had to see at a theater, I was 11 years old and instantly in love with sci-fi because of it. It defined my fledgling taste in cinema.
3. A Serious Man (2009)

Larry Gopnik, a Midwestern physics teacher, watches his life unravel over multiple sudden incidents. Though seeking meaning and answers amidst his turmoils, he seems to keep sinking.
Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen | Stars: Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, Sari Lennick, Fred Melamed
Votes: 149,971 | Gross: $9.19M
It's no secret I love the Coens, and the fact that many avid fans found this film somewhat underwhelming does not matter to me at all. In fact, this movie is mainly misunderstood because of the Coens' intent: to very clevery mess with the audience's expectations.
4. Fargo (1996)
R | 98 min | Crime, Thriller
Minnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard's inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of the quite pregnant Marge Gunderson.
Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare
Votes: 726,976 | Gross: $24.61M
This movie needs no introduction at all. The Coens forged a genre in itself with this one.
5. Alien (1979)
R | 117 min | Horror, Sci-Fi
The crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.
Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright
Votes: 951,385 | Gross: $78.90M
It took me years to watch and fully appreciate this movie, but ultimately it became my second-favorite sci-fi film at all.
6. The Terminator (1984)
R | 107 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
A human soldier is sent from 2029 to 1984 to stop an almost indestructible cyborg killing machine, sent from the same year, which has been programmed to execute a young woman whose unborn son is the key to humanity's future salvation.
Director: James Cameron | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Paul Winfield
Votes: 924,579 | Gross: $38.40M
It feels unfair to compare this one to T2 on the one hand, but still it is a very good film. Made with a very low budget, Cameron showed what he was capable of with this one.
7. The Hitcher (1986)
R | 97 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller
A young man who escapes the clutches of a murderous hitchhiker is subsequently stalked by the hitcher and framed for his crimes.
Director: Robert Harmon | Stars: Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jeffrey DeMunn
Votes: 52,564 | Gross: $5.84M
Yes, I will defend this movie till the bitter end. It is a B-movie for sure, but it has a few very strong tricks up its sleeve, and I'm willing to forgive it its flaws because of that.
8. The Lives of Others (2006)
R | 137 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller
In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the secret police conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives.
Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck | Stars: Ulrich Mühe, Martina Gedeck, Sebastian Koch, Ulrich Tukur
Votes: 410,636 | Gross: $11.29M
German cinema, always inclined to explore history, has grown a lot of muscle over the years. No longer shy of showing the darker aspects of its past, this is probably my favorite German film.
9. Downfall (2004)
R | 156 min | Biography, Drama, History
Traudl Junge, the final secretary for Adolf Hitler, tells of the Nazi dictator's final days in his Berlin bunker at the end of WWII.
Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel | Stars: Bruno Ganz, Alexandra Maria Lara, Ulrich Matthes, Juliane Köhler
Votes: 375,353 | Gross: $5.51M
I could not really choose between this one and Das Leben Der Anderen. They're both good on different fronts. I felt like I was hit with a sledgehammer when the credits rolled.
10. Magnolia (1999)
R | 188 min | Drama
An epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of love, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley.
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman
Votes: 328,607 | Gross: $22.46M
Not a PTA fan per sé. But this film took huge risks with its ambitions and still came out flawless.
11. Donnie Darko (2001)
R | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi
After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.
Director: Richard Kelly | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne
Votes: 850,343 | Gross: $1.48M
Easily the kind of film that defined the 2000's. Like the Matrix before it, it divided people in two groups, people who 'got' it, and people who understood nothing of it. I'm glad I belong to the former.
12. Full Metal Jacket (1987)
R | 116 min | Drama, War
A pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.
Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Matthew Modine, R. Lee Ermey, Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Baldwin
Votes: 790,733 | Gross: $46.36M
I've seen a lot of war movies, and this one tops the list of that genre, well above films like Saving Private Ryan. The absurdism of Kubrick just befits the war it depicts.
13. The Shining (1980)
R | 146 min | Drama, Horror
A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.
Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Votes: 1,107,255 | Gross: $44.02M
I'm not a horror fan, mostly because the type of horror in this film usually makes me hide behind the couch for cover. Still, it's the perfect blend of a very good story and a director whose vision matches it completely.
14. Casino (1995)
R | 178 min | Crime, Drama
In Las Vegas, two best friends - a casino executive and a mafia enforcer - compete for a gambling empire and a fast-living, fast-loving socialite.
Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, James Woods
Votes: 564,225 | Gross: $42.44M
Many people would choose Goodfellas over this one, for good reasons probably. But the opening sequence for this film just gives it the artistic advantage over Goodfellas for me.
15. Goodfellas (1990)
R | 145 min | Biography, Crime, Drama
The story of Henry Hill and his life in the mafia, covering his relationship with his wife Karen and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito.
Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco
Votes: 1,257,930 | Gross: $46.84M
While not as good as Casino IMO, it is still an unforgettable film, and also a film that reinvigorated the gangster genre, and that's really a credit to Scorsese.
16. Taxi Driver (1976)
R | 114 min | Crime, Drama
A mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action.
Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Albert Brooks
Votes: 921,178 | Gross: $28.26M
17. Zodiac (2007)
R | 157 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery
Between 1968 and 1983, a San Francisco cartoonist becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac Killer, an unidentified individual who terrorizes Northern California with a killing spree.
Director: David Fincher | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards
Votes: 598,652 | Gross: $33.08M
Zodiac will always be my favorite Fincher film (unless, hopefully, he comes with something even better). Fincher is a craftsman, and his natural attention to detail (which is next to absurd in this film), atmosphere, music, general feel and era is nowhere clearer than in this film. Many people felt frustrated by the ending, but this is simply because the Zodiac's case is so highly frustrating in itself. A true masterpiece.
18. Se7en (1995)
R | 127 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery
Two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives.
Director: David Fincher | Stars: Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Andrew Kevin Walker
Votes: 1,799,908 | Gross: $100.13M
It are the movies that defy expectations that linger in our memories forever. Fincher shook the audiences of the mid-90's with what he did: mixing the horror and detective thriller genres creating something quite unique. Nobody hears the words "what's in the box?" ever without thinking of this film and feeling his stomach turn. And that's what movie history is about.
19. Natural Born Killers (1994)
R | 119 min | Action, Crime, Romance
Two victims of traumatized childhoods become lovers and psychopathic serial murderers irresponsibly glorified by the mass media.
Director: Oliver Stone | Stars: Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore, Rodney Dangerfield
Votes: 251,879 | Gross: $50.28M
Not considered Stone's best by many, and maybe it was my 15-yo self that naturally was more inclined to like this film then. But if you forget the political *beep* and arguments about the plot, it is difficult not to see how visionary Stone's way of filming is. A killing spree on mescaline, maybe, but the most beautiful one I've seen. The Director's Cut is highly suggested above the final cut IMO.
20. JFK (1991)
R | 189 min | Drama, History, Thriller
New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison discovers there's more to the Kennedy assassination than the official story.
Director: Oliver Stone | Stars: Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau
Votes: 169,976 | Gross: $70.41M
The problem I have with Stone is his huge tendency towards agitprop. But oh boy, how delicious his agitprop is in this movie. Easily the best political film I've seen with Costner's best role ever.
21. The Big Lebowski (1998)
R | 117 min | Comedy, Crime
Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.
Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi
Votes: 860,676 | Gross: $17.50M
The comedic style of the Coens is a somewhat acquired taste IMO. Just let go regular movie expectations, just do not mind it when you lose track of the plot, and plunge deeply in this wildly funny rabbithole.
22. Pulp Fiction (1994)
R | 154 min | Crime, Drama
The lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.
Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis
Votes: 2,221,379 | Gross: $107.93M
Pulp Fiction is one of those films I can watch every two, three years whilst still discovering new aspects to it I did not see and appreciate before.
23. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
R | 99 min | Crime, Thriller
When a simple jewelry heist goes horribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant.
Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn
Votes: 1,088,650 | Gross: $2.83M
Brutal and unforgiving, but wildly hilarious at times too.
24. The Hunt (2012)
R | 115 min | Drama
A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.
Director: Thomas Vinterberg | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrøm
Votes: 364,549 | Gross: $0.69M
The Scandinavians have made so secret of their tendency to the dark and even diabolic the past years, and it definitely shows in this movie. Jagten explores and pushes you towards the boundaries of almost every negative emotion without ever feeling absurd unrealistic. The kind of movie that makes you question your appreciation of mankind.
25. The Celebration (1998)
R | 105 min | Drama
At Helge's 60th birthday party, some unpleasant family truths are revealed.
Director: Thomas Vinterberg | Stars: Ulrich Thomsen, Henning Moritzen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Paprika Steen
Votes: 93,909 | Gross: $1.65M
Dogma was a real thing in the 90's and this movie is my favorite in this genre, or should I say style. Like Jagten, you are witnessing an emotional carcrash in bullet time, and like any good movie, your expectations of the plot are thwarted. A deeply philosophical film.
26. Pi (1998)
R | 84 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery
A paranoid mathematician searches for a key number that will unlock the universal patterns found in nature.
Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Sean Gullette, Mark Margolis, Ben Shenkman, Pamela Hart
Votes: 186,485 | Gross: $3.22M
I have a soft spot for directors who can make a lot happen with very little resources and that's why this is my favourite Aronofsky.
27. Requiem for a Dream (2000)
R | 102 min | Drama
The drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..
Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans
Votes: 899,114 | Gross: $3.64M
Yes, my second-favorite Aronofsky, but only for the reasons I mentioned above. I recall feeling thoroughly depressed for a day or two after this film, and yes, that's a very good thing. An exercise in depecting human misery and powerlessness to avoid it, you will still want to watch every second. Very aspect of this film is aligned perfectly with its themes. Watch it, but do not expect to feel better afterwards.
28. Memento (2000)
R | 113 min | Mystery, Thriller
A man with short-term memory loss attempts to track down his wife's murderer.
Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Mark Boone Junior
Votes: 1,323,413 | Gross: $25.54M
The 90's and 2000's were probably the heyday of the plot-twist. A great exercise in creating a unique plot and mode of telling a story, Memento is the puzzle you cannot let go.
29. The Road (I) (2009)
R | 111 min | Drama, Thriller
In a dangerous post-apocalyptic world, an ailing father defends his son as they slowly travel to the sea.
Director: John Hillcoat | Stars: Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Robert Duvall
Votes: 254,307 | Gross: $0.06M
Why so few of McCarthy's book have been adapted to film remains a mystery to me (Blood Meridian is just begging to be adapted IMO). Quite true to the book and a haunting tale of love and horror.
30. Jacob's Ladder (I) (1990)
R | 113 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery
Mourning his dead child, a haunted Vietnam War veteran attempts to uncover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation. To do so, he must decipher reality and life from his own dreams, delusions, and perceptions of death.
Director: Adrian Lyne | Stars: Tim Robbins, Elizabeth Peña, Danny Aiello, Matt Craven
Votes: 117,932 | Gross: $26.12M
Another movie that definitely is not rated highly yet still has my unconditional support.
31. Heat (1995)
R | 170 min | Action, Crime, Drama
A group of high-end professional thieves start to feel the heat from the LAPD when they unknowingly leave a verbal clue at their latest heist.
Director: Michael Mann | Stars: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight
Votes: 719,724 | Gross: $67.44M
A modern crime story like no other, and definitely Mann at his very best. Contains the most well-directed shootout scene I've ever seen.
32. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
R | 118 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.
Director: Jonathan Demme | Stars: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn, Ted Levine
Votes: 1,548,904 | Gross: $130.74M
If an actor has only 16 mins of screentime in a feature film and still the film seems to be all about him, you've got something special.
Yes, 16 mins.
33. American Gangster (2007)
R | 157 min | Biography, Crime, Drama
An outcast New York City cop is charged with bringing down Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas, whose real life inspired this partly biographical film.
Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin
Votes: 452,676 | Gross: $130.16M
My second-favorite Scott film. True, artistic license here and there, but still, this is how a good tale is told.
34. The Godfather (1972)
R | 175 min | Crime, Drama
The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.
Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton
Votes: 2,013,542 | Gross: $134.97M
I'm not going to tell why a masterpiece is a masterpiece.
35. Nightcrawler (2014)
R | 117 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
When Louis Bloom, a con man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.
Director: Dan Gilroy | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton, Riz Ahmed
Votes: 604,855 | Gross: $32.38M
Gyllenhaal's devotion to acting shows in this film. You don't like him, because he so very wants you to not like him. A grim story about a concrete wilderness.
36. Prisoners (2013)
R | 153 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery
When Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts.
