A really great bottle necked independent film. I really like this movie. Similar to Attack of the Killer Chickens, this movie is kind of like your kids wanting you to watch their "play" they created with cardboard box scenery, only to have you thinking, "Wow! This isn't that bad!" as you're placating them. Still primitive and lacking polish... but not that bad. I bet they had a blast making their scenery!!

A violin discovered in a sealed room with numerous other musical instruments of quality, all of which had been hidden from a 1960's communist party purge of western musical instruments in China, might or might not be THE "Red Violin" made by Italian Violin Master Nicolò Buscotti in 1681.
Collectors of valuable violins considered the "Red Violin" to have been permanently lost soon after its creation. The main clue that this newly found violin might be the long lost "Red Violin", is the streak of red stain down the violin's spine, caused accidentally by Buscotti during the violin's stain application. If this is the rediscovered "Red Violin", it will auction in the millions of dollars.
An acoustical engineer has begun a series of forensic tests to try and determine if it is indeed the lost "Red Violin". Between tests we are told the interesting history of the "Red Violin", from its creation, to the time it disappeared.
*The Red Violin is based on a real life Stradivarius (Antonio Stradivari, there is no master violin maker named Nicolò Buscotti). Once known in real life as "The Red Stradivarius", it was made in 1720 and had been considered lost until it's rediscovery in the 1930's (the near entirety of it's 210 year existence). After it's rediscovery, the violin is now known as 'The Red Mendelssohn', because of it being purchased by an heir of the famous composer Felix Mendelssohn.

The movie has a crazy decent into the realm of "Oh crap, please tell me this isn't happening..." that has stuck with me for decades. It's a teen movie, but it is icy, forlorn and its tone is haunting.
