Steve McQueen was the Oscar-nominated performer who helped define the meaning of “cool” in just a handful of movies before his untimely death in 1980 at the age of 50. But how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1930, McQueen first came to the attentions of movie audiences with his leading role in the sci-fi B-movie classic “The Blob” (1958). He quickly made a name for himself as an action star thanks to a series of hits through the 1960s and early 1970s, including “The Magnificent Seven” (1960), “The Great Escape” (1963), “Bullitt” (1968), “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1968), “The Getaway” (1972), and “The Towering Inferno” (1974). Known as “The Kind of Cool,” his onscreen persona as a reluctant antihero made him a favorite of both men who wanted to be him and women who wanted to be with him.

Rami Malek Once Saved Mr. Robot From A Potential Rewrite! ( Photo Credit – Flickr )
Rami Malek received his due credit with a Best Actor win at the Academy Awards for Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). However, one venture that helped him grow and explore his potential as an actor was Mr. Robot (2015–2019). Sam Esmail’s four-part series saw Malek play the role of Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity engineer and hacker with social anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and dissociative identity disorder. For his brilliant acting chops in Mr. Robot, Rami was also honored with an Emmy for Best Drama Actor in 2016.
Mr. Robot can easily be termed one of the best shows of recent times. However, finding a potential Elliot was a laborious task for creator Sam Esmail. But once he found Rami Malek, Esmail could not help but be in complete awe of the actor, whose ability to take control of the character in...

Danish star Trine Dyrholm takes on the “bad mom” trope in “Birthday Girl,” which has its world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival, where a girl’s 18th birthday party goes horribly wrong.
Directed by Michael Noer, it sees her character, Nanna, trying to impress estranged daughter (“As in Heaven” breakout Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl) with a cruise to the Caribbean. But when the girl is assaulted, and no one believes her, Nanna needs to step it all the way up.
“Birthday Girl” was produced by Matilda Appelin and Rene Ezra for Nordisk Film Production, with TrustNordisk handling sales.
“I saw her as a mother who wants to be her daughter’s girlfriend. They are on the biggest party boat she could find, because they haven’t seen each other that much and she wants to make up for all that. She is fighting for this closeness and then they share this terrible experience,...

Jim Brown, the NFL titan who appeared in “The Dirty Dozen,” many Blaxploitation films plus Oliver Stone’s “Any Given Sunday,” “The Running Man,” Tim Burton’s “Mars Attacks” and Spike Lee’s “He Got Game,” to name a few, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 87.
His wife Monique posted the news of his death on Instagram, saying, “He passed peacefully last night at our L.A. home.”
In nine extraordinary seasons as a fullback with the Cleveland Browns, Brown set an array of NFL records. In 2002, The Sporting News named him the greatest professional football player ever. That phenomenal athleticism and a charismatic personality made him bankable as the first African American action star.
“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Monique and their family,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Jim Brown was a gifted athlete — one of the most dominant players to...

Alice left an indelible mark on American TV. Based on a relatively minor Martin Scorsese film, the weekly 30-minute sitcom followed the day-to-day of a widowed mom (played by Linda Lavin) who experienced car trouble in Arizona and never left. Nearly five decades after its 1976 debut, all but two of the original Alice cast members have died. Who’s still alive?

Before marrying Donald Hyatt and becoming a mom, Alice Spivak was a lounge singer in Newark, New Jersey. After her husband died in a trucking accident, she loaded up her station wagon and set her sights on Los Angele, hoping to revive her career. Fortunately for sitcom viewers, the newly inspired chanteuse and her adolescent son, Tommy, only made it as far as Phoenix before their car broke down. Intending a temporary stay, Alice rented an...

Paul McCartney is a gifted songwriter, proven by the dozens of No. 1 hits he’s written. Even more impressive is how quickly he comes up with these gems. Several of his songs he has been able to develop and finish on the spot. While the recording process occurs later, it’s still remarkable that McCartney could spontaneously create excellent music.
Here are 5 songs that Paul McCartney wrote on the spot ‘Picasso’s Last Words (Drink to Me)’ Paul McCartney | Mat Hayward/Getty Images
“Picasso’s Last Words” is a song from Band on the Run, the third studio album from Paul McCartney and Wings. The story goes that McCartney wrote the song while on vacation in Jamaica. The singer-songwriter met actor Dustin Hoffman, who was filming Papillon. After having dinner, Hoffman challenged McCartney to write a song about anything.

Naomi Ackie gives audiences a glimpse into the life of Whitney Houston in director Kasi Lemmons’ new biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and the new film is packed with a number of Houston’s hits.
Working with movement coach Polly Bennett and vocal coaches Tangela Large, Bridgette Jackson and Denise Woods, Ackie also underwent physical transformation with the help of numerous wigs and false teeth to cover the natural gap in her two front teeth.
Ackie doesn’t sing most songs in the film — she lip syncs to Houston’s perfect tracks instead — but she mimics Houston’s style of singing with great detail. She steps in for performances by Houston that were not recorded, such as “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” and “Jesus Loves Me” from her choir-singing days. Ackie also portrays a nervous Whitney who is thrust onstage by her mother, who knows Clive Davis is in attendance,...

If you enjoy watching talented actors situated in foreign lands, drenched in cosmetically applied sweat, opining in borderline-comical accents about second chances, Apple TV+’s Shantaram is likely to be your favorite new show of the fall.
Breathlessly awaited for nearly two decades by countless people who bought Gregory David Roberts’ epic tome to read on an airplane but never quite finished it, Shantaram has the insufferable trappings of yet another white savior story about a damaged guy whose quest for self-actualization leads him to an exotic place where superficial lessons about a previously unknown spiritual system help him and basically nobody else around him. Ok, it doesn’t just have the trappings of one of those stories. It is one of those stories.

Charlie Hunnam‘s toying with the idea of life after death when it comes to the dangerously smart character he played in all seven seasons of “Sons of Anarchy”.
During the Los Angeles premiere for his new AppleTV+ series “Shantaram”, the ridiculously handsome 42-year-old actor opened up to Et’s Will Marfugi a bit — keyword, a bit — about the possible revival of Jackson “Jax” Teller in some way, shape or form. He recently said as much, and he acknowledged that speaking about it caused quite the commotion.
“Oh, did that get a little bit of traction,” quipped Hunnam. But when pressed on whether there’s a concrete idea or if reprising his role as Jax will come in a series or film, Hunnam played coy.
“I can’t, I can’t tell you. No, no,” said Hunnam with a bit of a grin on his face. “There’s nothing I can say at all,...

Netflix is about to remove a alrge selection of movies and TV shows from its service.
Every month, without fanfare, numerous titles are removed from the streamer.

Every month, without fanfare, numerous titles are removed from the streamer.
This means that, should something be on your watchlist, it will vanish until it’s added again.
Netflix doesn’t publicise the titles it will remove – and users will only be alerted to something’s imminent removal if they happen to select the title in question.
But, with help from the team at What’s on Netflix, we’ve compiled the full list – and you can find the compilation of everything being added this month here.

Paul Thomas Anderson grew up in the San Fernando Valley, which played an important role in his 1997 breakthrough film “Boogie Nights,” which looked at Valley’s porn industry during the ‘70s and 80s. In his new United Artists release “Licorice Pizza,” Anderson returns to the Sfv for a nostalgia-tinged comedy-of-age story set in 1973 starring Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim. Both young performers received strong notices with the L.A. Times’ Justin Chang declaring Haim as the true star of “this boisterous, bighearted movie and its raison d’être.” And Bradley Cooper has earned positive notices for his funny turn as hairdresser turned film producer Jon Peters, who ironically was a producer on Cooper’s 2018 “A Star is Born.”

This month on Amazon Prime Video UK sees the final three episodes of Neil Gaiman fantasy drama American Gods arrive, along with the first three episodes of new comic book animated series Invincible, adapted from the books by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.
Movies-wise, there’s the sequel to John Landis’ 1988 comedy Coming To America, which follows the story of Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem as he’s drawn back to the US ahead of taking on Zamunda’s throne. Also, in his most anticipated role since he put on a beanie for those Kia car ads, Robert de Niro plays a granddad fighting with his young grandson over the use of a bedroom in The War With Grandpa.
Also – tennis, and a collection of existing movies including the very good Call Me By Your Name, which lands on the 26th. We’ll update this guide as new release...

It’s the 22nd century, and Earth has been destroyed by a religious-based war. The central plot of the recent HBO Max sci-fi program is the brainchild of several producers, including Aaron Guzikowski, who recently joined a Gold Derby Meet the Experts TV Showrunners panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Of his fellow producer, creator and directing legend Ridley Scott, he reveals, “It’s been quite a dream, actually; much more than I even could have hoped for. He’s become a mentor to me. He directed the first two episodes but has been intimately involved in the whole production… When it comes to story, he’ll defer to me in terms of the grand plan for the whole thing. When it comes down to execution, I defer to him. He’s Ridley Scott!”

Raised by Wolves Season 2 is officially confirmed for the proverbial pack that is HBO Max’s ongoing content lineup.
Indeed, just two weeks after the September 3 premiere of the epic, stylistically-driven sci-fi drama on the premium cable channel’s streaming offshoot, a second season of Raised by Wolves has been ordered, with the WarnerMedia company citing a 50% audience growth for the show’s second week. The series is the creation of writer Aaron Guzikowski, who wrote screenplays such as Dune remake director Denis Villeneuve’s directorial breakthrough, Prisoners, and the 2017 Papillon remake, and also created the 2014-2015 Jason Momoa-starring crimes series, The Red Road. However, the initial hype for the series was anchored to the involvement of genre great Ridley Scott, who directed and executive-produced a duo of episodes.

Male hierarchies inside prison walls are well-trod ground, from “Brute Force” and “Birdman of Alcatraz,” to “Papillon,” “Midnight Express,” and “The Shawshank Redemption.” But rarely is an entry as visually rapturous as West African filmmaker Philippe Lacôte’s “Night of the Kings,” which takes place inside the bowels of the infamous La MacA prison in Abidjan, a city on the south side of the Ivory Coast. While the film, both written and directed by Lacôte, is grounded in oral traditions that may seem exotic to certain viewers, the movie is really about the universal power of storytelling regardless of tongue — and how it can be used as a way to survive. Though hampered by some shaky third-act visual effects, “Night of the Kings” is through and through .

One of HBO Max’s most highly-anticipated projects will be premiering in just a few weeks: The streaming service has released the trailer for Ridley Scott’s “Raised By Wolves,” which will premiere on HBO Max on September 3.
Per HBO Max’s synopsis, the series centers on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences, the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task.
While the trailer offers nary a hint of religion, it more than makes up for it with its forbidding retelling of “The Three Little Pigs” fable — it’s more intense than that statement suggests — and brief shots of terrifying violence and visceral action. It’s still unclear if “Raised By Wolves” will be full of edge-of-your seat intensity that defined “Gladiator” and Scott’s “Alien” films,...
