This guy just has a golden touch! From his TV start on Bosom Buddies, through his medium-quality "paying-his-dues" comedies, through his numerous stellar performances in top-notch films, I don't think anybody tops him. I hesitated putting him number two, because I frequently don't care for his film choices. But bottom line is that even in a medicore film, he ALWAYS delivers a great performance! I grew up watching this guy on The Electric Company -- I still remember DJ Mel Mound with Pounds of Sound. I have a record album from The Electric Company with him on it, which I'm guessing is probably worth a few bucks by now! This man has such a believable and real delivery in everything he does that you can't help but watch his films. The guy's fantastic! He mixes the sensibilities of a character actor (caring more about a great role than about how popular the movie will be) with the box-office muscle to frequently squeeze out a blockbuster. Interesting formula, as it almost guarantees he can do what he wants to do on smaller projects. I hadn't seen such a convincing portrayal since Benny (Larry Drake) on the TV series L.A. Law. Not many actors who are really good prefer to stay on television, but I've heard that's the case with this actor. Sure, he's done a few films, but he's more than at-home on various TV series (like Cybill, Sports Night, Parenthood and Dirty, Sexy Money). Of course, Six Feet Under is nearly perfect! He really hasn't done much work, so it may be too soon to rank him this high. But in the work he has done he's got an incredibly natural acting ability. He's best known for TV series such as Six Feet Under and Dexter.

Another "poster-boy" I desperately wanted to dislike for that fact alone, but he's done some good work. Even in a medicore film, he throws himself into the role and becomes the character. A prime example is Taps - although Sean Penn probably gives a better performance, I completely believe Tom Cruise is his character. For sheer acting ability, he probably deserves to be much higher on this list. But I never warmed to him very much due to the stories I've always heard about his lack of respect (almost contempt) for the acting profession. There are tales of how he kind of squandered his acting talent and only did it when he needed another paycheck. There are many other very talented actors on this list who seem to strive for some degree of excellence, now that they're popular enough that they can pick and choose projects. This is one of my wife's favorite actors. He just has an "aww shucks" believability and trustworthiness to him (even when he's playing a bad guy, and especially when he's playing a grandfatherly type). As great as the cast was on the TV series Breaking Bad, He may have given the best performance of all of them! I'm not sure why he doesn't have a long list of greats films, because he was incredible in Breaking Bad.

I was really impressed that a country-singer could come along and not only act, but play the parts so perfectly. He can play a great bad guy who makes you hate him every step of the way, and love the hero or underdog. His sister Justine Bateman had a very promising start on television series like Family Ties and Men Behaving Badly, but then she kind of hit a wall. Jason, on the other hand, has demonstrated a real knack for comedies on the big screen. I absolutely love his performance in Leon: The Professional! Likewise, I think he gives pretty good performances in The Fifth Element, in Air Force One,and even in Lost In Space (although overall the latter film is pretty dreadful). I just haven't been as completely impressed with other films, so his range "may" be slightly limited. But The Professional alone earns his inclusion here. I'm actually only a casual fan of his serious acting in films. It's certainly adequate, but I think his real strength is as a comedic actor. He's great on 30 Rock, and postively fantastic every time he hosts Saturday Night Live. This guy was born to play Tony Soprano and is perfect in the role! Unfortunately, he seems somewhat limited in his range. He's great in The Mexican, but he's basically playing Tony Soprano again in that movie (a mob hitman, rather than a mob boss). Whenever he's in other roles, he's kind of average. But his top-notch performance in the HBO series of The Sopranos still earns him a spot on this list. I am not that wild about him as an actor, but I love many of his films. It's not just his film choices, it is his performance -- he's just not a typical actor, but rather has his own quirky style that somehow works for him. He also is a great comedic actor, although I don't think he's often thought of in that way. But every time he appears on Saturday Night Live he is hilarious! I absolutely loved his television series Men Behaving Badly. Sure, it was crude and low-brow, but it was also very funny, in the tradition of Dumb & Dumber, or Me, Myself & Irene, or Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. At some point he and co-star Justine Bateman objected to the locker-room humor and exited the show. The show tried to carry on with the third co-star Rob Schneider by himself, but it just wasn't the same. Another guy who seems comfortable in television. Sure, there's the cult classic movie Office Space, but perhaps more impressive are his hilarious television series, like The Drew Carey Show, and the too short-lived Outsourced. This is another great character actor who seems more concerned about a good movie role and a solid performance than about how big a blockbuster it's going to be. He was also on the AMC television series The Walking Dead.

For an actor in TV movies, he stands out far above his co-stars. In an A-list film, however, he is not nearly as noteworthy, but is still adequate. So what am I trying to say? I'm saying he has definite acting talent, but when alongside other great actors, I suppose he fades more to character-actor status. He's a very talented comedic actor and has a knack for improvisation, but he's not much of a serious or dramatic actor, which is why I include him only at the bottm end of the list. On television, he was at the top of his game on Saturday Night Live, and The PJ's was pretty good, too. He's rather mediocre as a serious actor, but phenomenally talented as a comedic actor. He's downright stellar on yhe American version of The Office.
